Proverbs 13-15

13 A wise son hears his father's instruction,
    but ^(A)a scoffer does not listen to rebuke.
²From the fruit of his mouth a man ^(B)eats what is good,
    but the desire of the treacherous ^(C)is for violence.
³^(D)Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life;
    ^(E)he who opens wide his lips ^(F)comes to ruin.
⁴^(G)The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing,
    while the soul of the diligent ^(H)is richly supplied.
⁵The righteous hates falsehood,
    but the wicked brings shame^[a] and disgrace.
⁶^(I)Righteousness guards him whose ^(J)way is blameless,
    but sin overthrows the wicked.
⁷^(K)One pretends to be rich,^[b] yet has nothing;
    ^(L)another pretends to be poor,^[c] yet has great wealth.
⁸The ransom of a man's life is his wealth,
    but a poor man ^(M)hears no threat.
⁹^(N)The light of the righteous rejoices,
    but ^(O)the lamp of the wicked will be put out.
¹⁰^(P)By insolence comes nothing but strife,
    but with those who take advice is wisdom.

    but whoever gathers little by little will increase it.
¹²Hope deferred makes the heart sick,

¹⁴The teaching of the wise is ^(W)a fountain of life,

²⁰Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise,

    but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him.^[i]

    but the belly of the wicked suffers want.
14 ^(AO)The wisest of women ^(AP)builds her house,
    but folly with her own hands ^(AQ)tears it down.
²Whoever ^(AR)walks in uprightness fears the Lord,
    but he who is ^(AS)devious in his ways despises him.
³By the mouth of a fool comes ^(AT)a rod for his back,^[j]
    ^(AU)but the lips of the wise will preserve them.
⁴Where there are no oxen, the manger is clean,
    but abundant crops come by the strength of the ox.
⁵^(AV)A faithful witness does not lie,
    but ^(AW)a false witness breathes out lies.
⁶^(AX)A scoffer seeks wisdom ^(AY)in vain,
    but ^(AZ)knowledge is easy for a man of understanding.
⁷Leave the presence of a fool,
    for there you do not meet words of knowledge.
⁸The wisdom of the prudent is to discern his way,
    but the folly of fools is deceiving.

    but the upright enjoy acceptance.^[k]
¹⁰The heart knows its own ^(BB)bitterness,
    and no stranger shares its joy.
¹¹^(BC)The house of the wicked will be destroyed,
    but the tent of the upright will flourish.
¹²^(BD)There is a way that seems right to a man,

¹³Even in laughter the heart may ache,

¹⁴The backslider in heart will be ^(BH)filled with the fruit of his ways,
    and ^(BI)a good man will be filled with the fruit of his ways.

    but the prudent gives thought to his steps.

    but a fool is reckless and careless.
¹⁷A man of ^(BM)quick temper acts foolishly,
    and a man of evil devices is hated.
¹⁸The simple inherit folly,
    but the prudent are crowned with knowledge.

    the wicked at the gates of the righteous.
²⁰^(BO)The poor is disliked even by his neighbor,
    ^(BP)but the rich has many friends.
²¹Whoever ^(BQ)despises his neighbor is a sinner,
    but ^(BR)blessed is he who is generous to the poor.
²²Do they not go astray who ^(BS)devise evil?
    Those who devise good meet^[n] ^(BT)steadfast love and faithfulness.
²³In all toil there is profit,
    but mere talk ^(BU)tends only to poverty.
²⁴The crown of the wise is their wealth,
    but the folly of fools brings folly.
²⁵A truthful witness saves lives,
    but one who ^(BV)breathes out lies is deceitful.
²⁶In the fear of the Lord one has ^(BW)strong confidence,
    and ^(BX)his children will have ^(BY)a refuge.
²⁷The fear of the Lord is ^(BZ)a fountain of life,
    that one may ^(CA)turn away from the snares of death.
²⁸In ^(CB)a multitude of people is the glory of a king,
    but without people a prince is ruined.
²⁹Whoever is ^(CC)slow to anger has great understanding,
    but he who has a hasty temper exalts folly.

³³Wisdom ^(CL)rests in the heart of a man of understanding,
    but it makes itself known even in the midst of fools.^[q]
³⁴Righteousness exalts a nation,
    but sin is a reproach to any people.
³⁵A servant who deals wisely has ^(CM)the king's favor,
    but his wrath falls on one who acts shamefully.
15 ^(CN)A soft answer turns away wrath,
    but ^(CO)a harsh word stirs up anger.
²The tongue of the wise commends knowledge,
    but ^(CP)the mouths of fools pour out folly.
³^(CQ)The eyes of the Lord are in every place,
    keeping watch on the evil and the good.
⁴^(CR)A gentle^[r] tongue is ^(CS)a tree of life,
    but ^(CT)perverseness in it breaks the spirit.
⁵^(CU)A fool ^(CV)despises his father's instruction,
    but ^(CW)whoever heeds reproof is prudent.
⁶In the house of the righteous there is much treasure,
    but trouble befalls the income of the wicked.
⁷^(CX)The lips of the wise spread knowledge;
    ^(CY)not so the hearts of fools.^[s]
⁸^(CZ)The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord,
    but ^(DA)the prayer of the upright is acceptable to him.
⁹The way of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord,
    but he loves him ^(DB)who pursues righteousness.
¹⁰There is ^(DC)severe discipline for him who forsakes the way;
    ^(DD)whoever hates reproof will die.
¹¹Sheol and Abaddon lie open before the Lord;
    how much more ^(DE)the hearts of the children of man!

    he will not go to the wise.
¹³^(DH)A glad heart makes a cheerful face,
    but by ^(DI)sorrow of heart the spirit is ^(DJ)crushed.

    but the mouths of fools feed on folly.
¹⁵All the days of the afflicted are evil,

²⁷Whoever is ^(EG)greedy for unjust gain ^(EH)troubles his own household,
    but he who hates ^(EI)bribes will live.
²⁸The heart of the righteous ^(EJ)ponders how to answer,
    but ^(EK)the mouth of the wicked pours out evil things.
²⁹The Lord is ^(EL)far from the wicked,
    but he ^(EM)hears the prayer of the righteous.
³⁰^(EN)The light of the eyes rejoices the heart,
    and ^(EO)good news refreshes^[t] the bones.
³¹^(EP)The ear that listens to ^(EQ)life-giving reproof
    will dwell among the wise.
³²Whoever ^(ER)ignores instruction ^(ES)despises himself,
    but he who listens to reproof ^(ET)gains intelligence.

Romans 11

The Remnant of Israel

11 I ask, then, ^(A)has God rejected his people? By no means! For ^(B)I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham,^[a] a member of the tribe of Benjamin. ²^(C)God has not rejected his people whom he ^(D)foreknew. Do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he appeals to God against Israel? ³^(E)“Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have demolished your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life.” ⁴But what is God's reply to him? ^(F)“I have kept for myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.” ⁵So too at the present time there is ^(G)a remnant, chosen by grace. ⁶^(H)But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.

⁷What then? ^(I)Israel failed to obtain what it was seeking. The elect obtained it, but the rest ^(J)were hardened, ⁸as it is written,

^(K)“God gave them a spirit of stupor,
^(L)eyes that would not see
and ears that would not hear,
down to this very day.”

⁹And David says,

^(M)“Let their table become a snare and a trap,
a stumbling block and a retribution for them;
¹⁰let their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see,
and bend their backs forever.”

Gentiles Grafted In

¹¹So I ask, did they stumble in order that they might fall? By no means! Rather, through their trespass ^(N)salvation has come to the Gentiles, so as to make Israel jealous. ¹²Now if their trespass means riches for the world, and if their failure means riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their full inclusion^[b] mean!

¹³Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch then as ^(O)I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry ¹⁴in order somehow to make my fellow Jews jealous, and ^(P)thus save some of them. ¹⁵For if their rejection means ^(Q)the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance mean but life from the dead? ¹⁶^(R)If the dough offered as firstfruits is holy, so is the whole lump, and if the root is holy, so are the branches.

¹⁷But if ^(S)some of the branches were broken off, and you, ^(T)although a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing root^[c] of the olive tree, ¹⁸do not be arrogant toward the branches. If you are, remember it is not you who support the root, but the root that supports you. ¹⁹Then you will say, “Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.” ²⁰That is true. They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you ^(U)stand fast through faith. So ^(V)do not become proud, but ^(W)fear. ²¹For if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will he spare you. ²²Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God's kindness to you, ^(X)provided you continue in his kindness. Otherwise ^(Y)you too will be cut off. ²³And ^(Z)even they, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God has the power to graft them in again. ²⁴For if you were cut from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, the natural branches, be grafted back into their own olive tree.

The Mystery of Israel's Salvation

²⁵^(AA)Lest you be wise in your own sight, I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers:^[d] ^(AB)a partial hardening has come upon Israel, ^(AC)until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. ²⁶And in this way all Israel will be saved, as it is written,

^(AD)“The Deliverer will come ^(AE)from Zion,
he will banish ungodliness from Jacob”;
²⁷“and this will be my ^(AF)covenant with them
^(AG)when I take away their sins.”

²⁸As regards the gospel, they are enemies for your sake. But as regards election, they are ^(AH)beloved for the sake of their forefathers. ²⁹For the gifts and ^(AI)the calling of God are irrevocable. ³⁰For just as ^(AJ)you were at one time disobedient to God but now have received mercy because of their disobedience, ³¹so they too have now been disobedient in order that by the mercy shown to you they also may now^[e] receive mercy. ³²For God ^(AK)has consigned all to disobedience, that he may have mercy on all.
