Striving and Suffering for Christ

27 Only (A)let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your affairs, that you stand fast in one spirit, (B)with one mind (C)striving together for the faith of the gospel, 28 and not in any way terrified by your adversaries, which is to them a proof of perdition, but [a]to you of salvation, and that from God. 29 For to you (D)it has been granted on behalf of Christ, (E)not only to believe in Him, but also to (F)suffer for His sake, 30 (G)having the same conflict (H)which you saw in me and now hear is in me.

Unity Through Humility

Therefore if there is any [b]consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any (I)affection and mercy, (J)fulfill my joy (K)by being like-minded, having the same love, being of (L)one accord, of one mind. (M)Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but (N)in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. (O)Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of (P)others.

The Humbled and Exalted Christ

(Q)Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, (R)being in the form of God, did not consider it [c]robbery to be equal with God, (S)but [d]made Himself of no reputation, taking the form (T)of a bondservant, and (U)coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and (V)became (W)obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. (X)Therefore God also (Y)has highly exalted Him and (Z)given Him the name which is above every name, 10 (AA)that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and (AB)that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Light Bearers

12 Therefore, my beloved, (AC)as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, (AD)work out your own salvation with (AE)fear and trembling; 13 for (AF)it is God who works in you both to will and to do (AG)for His good pleasure.

14 Do all things (AH)without [e]complaining and (AI)disputing,[f] 15 that you may become blameless and [g]harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as (AJ)lights in the world, 16 holding fast the word of life, so that (AK)I may rejoice in the day of Christ that (AL)I have not run in vain or labored in (AM)vain.

17 Yes, and if (AN)I am being poured out as a drink offering on the sacrifice (AO)and service of your faith, (AP)I am glad and rejoice with you all. 18 For the same reason you also be glad and rejoice with me.

Timothy Commended

19 But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send (AQ)Timothy to you shortly, that I also may be encouraged when I know your [h]state. 20 For I have no one (AR)like-minded, who will sincerely care for your state. 21 For all seek their own, not the things which are of Christ Jesus. 22 But you know his proven character, (AS)that as a son with his father he served with me in the gospel. 23 Therefore I hope to send him at once, as soon as I see how it goes with me. 24 But I trust in the Lord that I myself shall also come shortly.

Epaphroditus Praised

25 Yet I considered it necessary to send to you (AT)Epaphroditus, my brother, fellow worker, and (AU)fellow soldier, (AV)but your messenger and (AW)the one who ministered to my need; 26 (AX)since he was longing for you all, and was distressed because you had heard that he was sick. 27 For indeed he was sick almost unto death; but God had mercy on him, and not only on him but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow. 28 Therefore I sent him the more eagerly, that when you see him again you may rejoice, and I may be less sorrowful. 29 Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness, and hold such men in esteem; 30 because for the work of Christ he came close to death, [i]not regarding his life, (AY)to supply what was lacking in your service toward me.

Life Worthy of the Gospel

27 Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy(A) of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm(B) in the one Spirit,[a] striving together(C) as one for the faith of the gospel 28 without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved—and that by God. 29 For it has been granted to you(D) on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer(E) for him, 30 since you are going through the same struggle(F) you saw(G) I had, and now hear(H) that I still have.

Imitating Christ’s Humility

Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit,(I) if any tenderness and compassion,(J) then make my joy complete(K) by being like-minded,(L) having the same love, being one(M) in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit.(N) Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,(O) not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.(P)

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:(Q)

Who, being in very nature[b] God,(R)
    did not consider equality with God(S) something to be used to his own advantage;
rather, he made himself nothing(T)
    by taking the very nature[c] of a servant,(U)
    being made in human likeness.(V)
And being found in appearance as a man,
    he humbled himself
    by becoming obedient to death(W)
        even death on a cross!(X)

Therefore God exalted him(Y) to the highest place
    and gave him the name that is above every name,(Z)
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,(AA)
    in heaven and on earth and under the earth,(AB)
11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,(AC)
    to the glory of God the Father.

Do Everything Without Grumbling

12 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling,(AD) 13 for it is God who works in you(AE) to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.(AF)

14 Do everything without grumbling(AG) or arguing, 15 so that you may become blameless(AH) and pure, “children of God(AI) without fault in a warped and crooked generation.”[d](AJ) Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky 16 as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ(AK) that I did not run(AL) or labor in vain.(AM) 17 But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering(AN) on the sacrifice(AO) and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you.(AP) 18 So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.

Timothy and Epaphroditus

19 I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy(AQ) to you soon,(AR) that I also may be cheered when I receive news about you. 20 I have no one else like him,(AS) who will show genuine concern for your welfare. 21 For everyone looks out for their own interests,(AT) not those of Jesus Christ. 22 But you know that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father(AU) he has served with me in the work of the gospel. 23 I hope, therefore, to send him as soon as I see how things go with me.(AV) 24 And I am confident(AW) in the Lord that I myself will come soon.

25 But I think it is necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus, my brother, co-worker(AX) and fellow soldier,(AY) who is also your messenger, whom you sent to take care of my needs.(AZ) 26 For he longs for all of you(BA) and is distressed because you heard he was ill. 27 Indeed he was ill, and almost died. But God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, to spare me sorrow upon sorrow. 28 Therefore I am all the more eager to send him,(BB) so that when you see him again you may be glad and I may have less anxiety. 29 So then, welcome him in the Lord with great joy, and honor people like him,(BC) 30 because he almost died for the work of Christ. He risked his life to make up for the help you yourselves could not give me.(BD)

Psalms 90–106

The Eternity of God, and Man’s Frailty

A Prayer (A)of Moses the man of God.

90 Lord, (B)You have been our [a]dwelling place in all generations.
(C)Before the mountains were brought forth,
Or ever You [b]had formed the earth and the world,
Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.

You turn man to destruction,
And say, (D)“Return, O children of men.”
(E)For a thousand years in Your sight
Are like yesterday when it is past,
And like a watch in the night.
You carry them away like a flood;
(F)They are like a sleep.
In the morning (G)they are like grass which grows up:
In the morning it flourishes and grows up;
In the evening it is cut down and withers.

For we have been consumed by Your anger,
And by Your wrath we are terrified.
(H)You have set our iniquities before You,
Our (I)secret sins in the light of Your countenance.
For all our days have passed away in Your wrath;
We finish our years like a sigh.
10 The days of our lives are seventy years;
And if by reason of strength they are eighty years,
Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow;
For it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
11 Who knows the power of Your anger?
For as the fear of You, so is Your wrath.
12 (J)So teach us to number our days,
That we may gain a heart of wisdom.

13 Return, O Lord!
How long?
And (K)have compassion on Your servants.
14 Oh, satisfy us early with Your mercy,
(L)That we may rejoice and be glad all our days!
15 Make us glad according to the days in which You have afflicted us,
The years in which we have seen evil.
16 Let (M)Your work appear to Your servants,
And Your glory to their children.
17 (N)And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us,
And (O)establish the work of our hands for us;
Yes, establish the work of our hands.

BOOK IV

Psalms 90–106

Psalm 90

A prayer of Moses the man of God.

Lord, you have been our dwelling place(A)
    throughout all generations.
Before the mountains were born(B)
    or you brought forth the whole world,
    from everlasting to everlasting(C) you are God.(D)

You turn people back to dust,
    saying, “Return to dust, you mortals.”(E)
A thousand years in your sight
    are like a day that has just gone by,
    or like a watch in the night.(F)
Yet you sweep people away(G) in the sleep of death—
    they are like the new grass of the morning:
In the morning it springs up new,
    but by evening it is dry and withered.(H)

We are consumed by your anger
    and terrified by your indignation.
You have set our iniquities before you,
    our secret sins(I) in the light of your presence.(J)
All our days pass away under your wrath;
    we finish our years with a moan.(K)
10 Our days may come to seventy years,(L)
    or eighty,(M) if our strength endures;
yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow,(N)
    for they quickly pass, and we fly away.(O)
11 If only we knew the power of your anger!
    Your wrath(P) is as great as the fear that is your due.(Q)
12 Teach us to number our days,(R)
    that we may gain a heart of wisdom.(S)

13 Relent, Lord! How long(T) will it be?
    Have compassion on your servants.(U)
14 Satisfy(V) us in the morning with your unfailing love,(W)
    that we may sing for joy(X) and be glad all our days.(Y)
15 Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us,
    for as many years as we have seen trouble.
16 May your deeds be shown to your servants,
    your splendor to their children.(Z)

17 May the favor[a] of the Lord our God rest on us;
    establish the work of our hands for us—
    yes, establish the work of our hands.(AA)
