The Seven Lamps

8 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ² “Speak to Aaron and say to him, ‘When you ^[a]mount the lamps, the seven lamps will ^(A)provide light in the front of the lampstand.’” ³ Therefore Aaron did so; he ^[b]mounted its lamps at the front of the lampstand, just as the Lord had commanded Moses. ^4 (B)Now this was the workmanship of the lampstand, hammered work of gold; from its base to its flower ornamentation it was hammered work; ^(C)according to the ^[c]pattern which the Lord had shown Moses, so he made the lampstand.

Cleansing the Levites

⁵ Again the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ⁶ “Take the Levites from among the sons of Israel and ^(D)cleanse them. ⁷ This is what you shall do to them, for their cleansing: sprinkle ^[d]purifying ^(E)water on them, and have them ^[e](F)use a razor over their whole ^[f]body, and they shall ^(G)wash their clothes and cleanse themselves. ⁸ Then have them take a ^[g]bull with ^(H)its grain offering, fine flour mixed with oil; and you shall take a second ^[h]bull as a sin offering. ⁹ So ^(I)you shall present the Levites in front of the tent of meeting. ^(J)You shall also assemble the whole congregation of the sons of Israel, ¹⁰ and present the Levites before the Lord; and the sons of Israel ^(K)shall lay their hands on the Levites. ¹¹ Aaron then shall ^[i]present the Levites before the Lord as a ^(L)wave offering from the sons of Israel, so that they may ^[j]qualify to perform the service of the Lord. ¹² Now ^(M)the Levites shall lay their hands on the heads of the bulls; then you are to offer the one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering to the Lord, to make atonement for the Levites. ¹³ And you shall have the Levites stand before Aaron and his sons so as to present them as a wave offering to the Lord.

¹⁴ “So you shall single out the Levites from among the sons of Israel, and ^(N)the Levites shall be Mine. ¹⁵ Then after that the Levites may go in to serve the tent of meeting. But you shall cleanse them and ^(O)present them as a wave offering; ¹⁶ for they are ^(P)exclusively given to Me from among the sons of Israel. I have taken them for Myself ^(Q)instead of the firstborn of every womb, the firstborn of all the sons of Israel. ¹⁷ For ^(R)every firstborn among the sons of Israel is Mine, among the people and among the animals; on the day that I fatally struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I sanctified them for Myself. ¹⁸ But I have taken the Levites instead of every firstborn among the sons of Israel. ¹⁹ And ^(S)I have given the Levites as ^[k]a gift to Aaron and to his sons from among the sons of Israel, to perform the service of the sons of Israel at the tent of meeting and to make atonement on behalf of the sons of Israel, so that there will be no ^(T)affliction among the sons of Israel due to ^[l]their approaching the sanctuary.”

²⁰ So this is what Moses, Aaron, and all the congregation of the sons of Israel did to the Levites; according to everything that the Lord had commanded Moses regarding the Levites, so the sons of Israel did to them. ^21 (U)The Levites, too, purified themselves from sin and washed their clothes; and Aaron presented them as a wave offering before the Lord. Aaron also made atonement for them to cleanse them. ²² Then after that the Levites went in to perform their service in the tent of meeting before Aaron and his sons; just as the Lord had commanded Moses concerning the Levites, so they did to them.

Retirement for the Levites

²³ Now the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ²⁴ “This is what applies to the Levites: from ^(V)twenty-five years old and upward ^[m]they shall enter to perform service in the work of the tent of meeting. ²⁵ But at the age of fifty years they shall ^[n]retire from service in the work and not work anymore. ²⁶ They may, however, ^[o]assist their brothers in the tent of meeting, ^(W)to fulfill an obligation, but they themselves shall do no work. In this way you shall deal with the Levites in their obligations.”

The Passover

9 Now the Lord spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in ^(A)the first month of the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying, ² “Now the sons of Israel are to ^[a]celebrate the Passover at ^(B)its appointed time. ³ On the fourteenth day of this month, ^[b]at twilight, you shall celebrate it at its appointed time; you shall celebrate it in accordance with all its statutes and all its ordinances.” ⁴ So Moses ^[c]told the sons of Israel to celebrate the Passover. ⁵ And ^(C)they celebrated the Passover in the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, at twilight, in the wilderness of Sinai; ^(D)in accordance with everything that the Lord had commanded Moses, so the sons of Israel did. ⁶ But there were some men who were ^(E)unclean because of contact with a ^[d]dead person, so that they could not celebrate Passover on that day; and ^(F)they came before Moses and Aaron on that day. ⁷ Those men said to him, “Though we are unclean because of a ^[e]dead person, why are we kept from presenting the offering of the Lord at its appointed time among the sons of Israel?” ⁸ Moses then said to them, “^[f](G)Wait, and I will listen to what the Lord will command concerning you.”

⁹ Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ¹⁰ “Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘If any one of you or of your generations becomes unclean because of a dead ^[g]person, or is on a distant journey, he may, however, celebrate the Passover to the Lord. ¹¹ In the second month on the ^(H)fourteenth day at twilight, they shall celebrate it; they ^(I)shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. ¹² They ^(J)shall not leave any of it until morning, ^(K)nor break a bone of it; they shall celebrate it in accordance with the whole statute of the Passover. ^13 (L)But the person who is clean and is not on a journey, yet refrains from celebrating the Passover, that ^[h]person shall then be cut off from his people, because he did not present the offering of the Lord at its appointed time. That person ^(M)will bear the responsibility for his sin. ¹⁴ And ^(N)if a stranger resides among you and ^[i]celebrates the Passover to the Lord, according to the statute of the Passover and its ordinance, so he shall celebrate it; you shall have ^[j]the ^(O)same statute, both for the stranger and for the native of the land.’”

The Cloud on the Tabernacle

¹⁵ Now on ^(P)the day that the tabernacle was erected, ^(Q)the cloud covered the tabernacle, the ^(R)tent of the testimony, and ^(S)in the evening it was like the appearance of fire over the tabernacle until morning. ¹⁶ That is how it was continuously; ^(T)the cloud would cover it by day, and the appearance of fire by night. ^17 (U)Whenever the cloud was lifted from over the tent, afterward the sons of Israel would set out; and in the place where the cloud settled down, there the sons of Israel would camp. ¹⁸ At the ^[k]command of the Lord the sons of Israel would set out, and at the ^[l]command of the Lord they would camp; ^(V)as long as the cloud settled over the tabernacle, they remained camped. ¹⁹ Even when the cloud lingered over the tabernacle for many days, ^[m]the sons of Israel would comply with the Lord’s ordinance and not set out. ²⁰ If ^[n]sometimes the cloud remained a few days over the tabernacle, ^(W)in accordance with the ^[o]command of the Lord they remained camped. Then in accordance with the ^[p]command of the Lord they set out. ²¹ If ^[q]sometimes the cloud ^[r]remained from evening until morning, when the cloud was lifted in the morning they would set out; or if it remained in the daytime and at night, whenever the cloud was lifted, they would set out. ²² Whether it was two days, a month, or a year that the cloud lingered over the tabernacle, staying above it, the sons of Israel remained camped and did not set out; but ^(X)when it was lifted, they did set out. ^23 (Y)At the ^[s]command of the Lord they camped, and at the ^[t]command of the Lord they set out; they did what the Lord required, in accordance with the ^[u]command of the Lord through Moses.

Safe at Malta

28 When ^(A)they had been brought safely through, ^(B)then we found out that ^(C)the island was called ^[a]Malta. ^2 (D)The ^[b]natives showed us extraordinary kindness, for they kindled a fire and ^(E)took us all in because of the rain that had started and because of the cold. ³ But when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire, a viper came out ^[c]because of the heat and fastened itself on his hand. ⁴ When ^(F)the ^[d]natives saw the creature hanging from his hand, they began saying to one another, “^(G)Undoubtedly this man is a murderer, and though he has been saved from the sea, ^[e]justice has not allowed him to live.” ⁵ However, ^[f](H)Paul shook the creature off into the fire and suffered no harm. ⁶ Now they were expecting that he was going to swell up or suddenly fall down dead. But after they had waited a long time and had seen nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and ^(I)began to say that he was a god.

⁷ Now in the neighboring parts of that place were lands belonging to the ^[g]leading man of the island, named Publius, who welcomed us and entertained us warmly for three days. ⁸ And it happened that the father of Publius was lying in bed afflicted with a recurring fever and dysentery. Paul went in to see him, and after he ^(J)prayed, he ^(K)laid his hands on him and healed him. ⁹ After this happened, the rest of the people on the island who had diseases were coming to him and being cured. ¹⁰ They also showed us many honors, and when we were about to set sail, they ^[h]supplied us with ^[i]everything we needed.

Paul Arrives in Rome

¹¹ After three months we set sail on ^(L)an Alexandrian ship which had wintered at the island, and which had ^[j]the Twin Brothers for its figurehead. ¹² After we put in at Syracuse, we stayed there for three days. ¹³ From there we sailed around and arrived at Rhegium, and a day later a south wind came up, and on the second day we came to Puteoli. ^14 [k]There we found some ^(M)brothers and sisters, and were invited to stay with them for seven days; and that is how we came to Rome. ¹⁵ And from there the ^(N)brothers and sisters, when they heard about us, came as far as the ^[l]Market of Appius and the ^[m]Three Inns to meet us; and when Paul saw them, he thanked God and took courage.

¹⁶ When we entered Rome, Paul was ^(O)allowed to stay by himself, with the soldier who was guarding him.

¹⁷ After three days ^[n]Paul called together those who were ^(P)the leading men of the Jews, and when they came together, he began saying to them, “^(Q)Brothers, ^(R)though I had done nothing against our people or ^(S)the customs of our ^[o]fathers, yet I was handed over to the Romans as a prisoner from Jerusalem. ¹⁸ And when they had ^(T)examined me, they ^(U)were willing to release me because there were ^(V)no grounds ^[p]for putting me to death. ¹⁹ But when the Jews ^[q]objected, I was forced to ^(W)appeal to Caesar, not that I had any accusation against my nation. ²⁰ For this reason, therefore, I ^[r]requested to see you and to speak with you, since I am wearing ^(X)this chain for ^(Y)the sake of the hope of Israel.” ²¹ They said to him, “We have neither received letters from Judea concerning you, nor has any of ^(Z)the brothers come here and reported or spoken anything bad about you. ²² But we desire to hear from you what ^[s]your views are; for regarding this ^(AA)sect, it is known to us that ^(AB)it is spoken against everywhere.”

²³ When they had set a day for ^[t]Paul, people came to him at ^(AC)his lodging in large numbers; and he was explaining to them by solemnly ^(AD)testifying about the kingdom of God and trying to persuade them concerning Jesus, ^(AE)from both the Law of Moses and from the Prophets, from morning until evening. ^24 (AF)Some were being persuaded by the things said by Paul, but others would not believe. ²⁵ And when they disagreed with one another, they began leaving after Paul said one parting statement: “The Holy Spirit rightly spoke through Isaiah the prophet to your fathers, ²⁶ saying,

²⁸ Therefore, let it be known to you that ^(AJ)this salvation of God has been sent ^(AK)to the Gentiles; they will also listen.”^[y]

³⁰ Now Paul stayed two full years ^[z]in his own rented lodging and welcomed all who came to him, ^31 [aa](AL)preaching the kingdom of God and teaching things about the Lord Jesus Christ ^(AM)with all openness, unhindered.
