52 The Lord said to Moses, 53 “The land is to be allotted to them as an inheritance based on the number of names.(A) 54 To a larger group give a larger inheritance, and to a smaller group a smaller one; each is to receive its inheritance according to the number(B) of those listed.(C) 55 Be sure that the land is distributed by lot.(D) What each group inherits will be according to the names for its ancestral tribe. 56 Each inheritance is to be distributed by lot among the larger and smaller groups.”

57 These were the Levites(E) who were counted by their clans:

through Gershon, the Gershonite clan;

through Kohath, the Kohathite clan;

through Merari, the Merarite clan.

58 These also were Levite clans:

the Libnite clan,

the Hebronite clan,

the Mahlite clan,

the Mushite clan,

the Korahite clan.

(Kohath was the forefather of Amram;(F) 59 the name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed,(G) a descendant of Levi, who was born to the Levites[a] in Egypt. To Amram she bore Aaron, Moses(H) and their sister(I) Miriam.(J) 60 Aaron was the father of Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.(K) 61 But Nadab and Abihu(L) died when they made an offering before the Lord with unauthorized fire.)(M)

62 All the male Levites a month old or more numbered 23,000.(N) They were not counted(O) along with the other Israelites because they received no inheritance(P) among them.(Q)

63 These are the ones counted(R) by Moses and Eleazar the priest when they counted the Israelites on the plains of Moab(S) by the Jordan across from Jericho.(T) 64 Not one of them was among those counted(U) by Moses and Aaron(V) the priest when they counted the Israelites in the Desert of Sinai. 65 For the Lord had told those Israelites they would surely die in the wilderness,(W) and not one of them was left except Caleb(X) son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.(Y)

Zelophehad’s Daughters(Z)

27 The daughters of Zelophehad(AA) son of Hepher,(AB) the son of Gilead,(AC) the son of Makir,(AD) the son of Manasseh, belonged to the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph. The names of the daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah. They came forward and stood before Moses,(AE) Eleazar the priest, the leaders(AF) and the whole assembly at the entrance to the tent of meeting(AG) and said, “Our father died in the wilderness.(AH) He was not among Korah’s followers, who banded together against the Lord,(AI) but he died for his own sin and left no sons.(AJ) Why should our father’s name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father’s relatives.”

So Moses brought their case(AK) before the Lord,(AL) and the Lord said to him, “What Zelophehad’s daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance(AM) among their father’s relatives and give their father’s inheritance to them.(AN)

“Say to the Israelites, ‘If a man dies and leaves no son, give his inheritance to his daughter. If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers. 10 If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father’s brothers. 11 If his father had no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan, that he may possess it. This is to have the force of law(AO) for the Israelites, as the Lord commanded Moses.’”

Joshua to Succeed Moses

12 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go up this mountain(AP) in the Abarim Range(AQ) and see the land(AR) I have given the Israelites.(AS) 13 After you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people,(AT) as your brother Aaron(AU) was, 14 for when the community rebelled at the waters in the Desert of Zin,(AV) both of you disobeyed my command to honor me as holy(AW) before their eyes.” (These were the waters of Meribah(AX) Kadesh, in the Desert of Zin.)

15 Moses said to the Lord, 16 “May the Lord, the God who gives breath to all living things,(AY) appoint someone over this community 17 to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the Lord’s people will not be like sheep without a shepherd.”(AZ)

18 So the Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership,[b](BA) and lay your hand on him.(BB) 19 Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him(BC) in their presence.(BD) 20 Give him some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him.(BE) 21 He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by inquiring(BF) of the Urim(BG) before the Lord. At his command he and the entire community of the Israelites will go out, and at his command they will come in.”

22 Moses did as the Lord commanded him. He took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole assembly. 23 Then he laid his hands on him and commissioned him,(BH) as the Lord instructed through Moses.

Daily Offerings

28 The Lord said to Moses, “Give this command to the Israelites and say to them: ‘Make sure that you present to me at the appointed time(BI) my food(BJ) offerings, as an aroma pleasing to me.’(BK) Say to them: ‘This is the food offering you are to present to the Lord: two lambs a year old without defect,(BL) as a regular burnt offering each day.(BM) Offer one lamb in the morning and the other at twilight,(BN) together with a grain offering(BO) of a tenth of an ephah[c] of the finest flour(BP) mixed with a quarter of a hin[d] of oil(BQ) from pressed olives. This is the regular burnt offering(BR) instituted at Mount Sinai(BS) as a pleasing aroma, a food offering presented to the Lord.(BT) The accompanying drink offering(BU) is to be a quarter of a hin of fermented drink(BV) with each lamb. Pour out the drink offering to the Lord at the sanctuary.(BW) Offer the second lamb at twilight,(BX) along with the same kind of grain offering and drink offering that you offer in the morning.(BY) This is a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.(BZ)

Sabbath Offerings

“‘On the Sabbath(CA) day, make an offering of two lambs a year old without defect,(CB) together with its drink offering and a grain offering of two-tenths of an ephah[e](CC) of the finest flour mixed with olive oil.(CD) 10 This is the burnt offering for every Sabbath,(CE) in addition to the regular burnt offering(CF) and its drink offering.

Monthly Offerings

11 “‘On the first of every month,(CG) present to the Lord a burnt offering of two young bulls,(CH) one ram(CI) and seven male lambs a year old, all without defect.(CJ) 12 With each bull there is to be a grain offering(CK) of three-tenths of an ephah[f](CL) of the finest flour mixed with oil; with the ram, a grain offering of two-tenths(CM) of an ephah of the finest flour mixed with oil; 13 and with each lamb, a grain offering(CN) of a tenth(CO) of an ephah of the finest flour mixed with oil. This is for a burnt offering,(CP) a pleasing aroma, a food offering presented to the Lord.(CQ) 14 With each bull there is to be a drink offering(CR) of half a hin[g] of wine; with the ram, a third of a hin[h]; and with each lamb, a quarter of a hin. This is the monthly burnt offering to be made at each new moon(CS) during the year. 15 Besides the regular burnt offering(CT) with its drink offering, one male goat(CU) is to be presented to the Lord as a sin offering.[i](CV)

52 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 53 (A)“To these the land shall be (B)divided as an inheritance, according to the number of names. 54 (C)To a large tribe you shall give a larger inheritance, and to a small tribe you shall give a smaller inheritance. Each shall be given its inheritance according to those who were numbered of them. 55 But the land shall be (D)divided by lot; they shall inherit according to the names of the tribes of their fathers. 56 According to the lot their inheritance shall be divided between the larger and the smaller.”

57 (E)And these are those who were numbered of the Levites according to their families: of Gershon, the family of the Gershonites; of Kohath, the family of the Kohathites; of Merari, the family of the Merarites. 58 These are the families of the Levites: the family of the Libnites, the family of the Hebronites, the family of the Mahlites, the family of the Mushites, and the family of the Korathites. And Kohath begot Amram. 59 The name of Amram’s wife was (F)Jochebed the daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt; and to Amram she bore Aaron and Moses and their sister Miriam. 60 (G)To Aaron were born Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. 61 And (H)Nadab and Abihu died when they offered profane fire before the Lord.

62 (I)Now those who were numbered of them were twenty-three thousand, every male from a month old and above; (J)for they were not numbered among the other children of Israel, because there was (K)no inheritance given to them among the children of Israel.

63 These are those who were numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who numbered the children of Israel (L)in the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho. 64 (M)But among these there was not a man of those who were numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest when they numbered the children of Israel in the (N)Wilderness of Sinai. 65 For the Lord had said of them, “They (O)shall surely die in the wilderness.” So there was not left a man of them, (P)except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.

Inheritance Laws

27 Then came the daughters of (Q)Zelophehad the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, from the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph; and these were the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. And they stood before Moses, before Eleazar the priest, and before the leaders and all the congregation, by the doorway of the tabernacle of meeting, saying: “Our father (R)died in the wilderness; but he was not in the company of those who gathered together against the Lord, (S)in company with Korah, but he died in his own sin; and he had no sons. Why should the name of our father be (T)removed[a] from among his family because he had no son? (U)Give us a [b]possession among our father’s brothers.”

So Moses (V)brought their case before the Lord.

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: “The daughters of Zelophehad speak what is right; (W)you shall surely give them a possession of inheritance among their father’s brothers, and cause the inheritance of their father to pass to them. And you shall speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘If a man dies and has no son, then you shall cause his inheritance to pass to his daughter. If he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers. 10 If he has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father’s brothers. 11 And if his father has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to the relative closest to him in his family, and he shall possess it.’ ” And it shall be to the children of Israel (X)a statute of judgment, just as the Lord commanded Moses.

Joshua the Next Leader of Israel(Y)

12 Now the Lord said to Moses: (Z)“Go up into this Mount Abarim, and see the land which I have given to the children of Israel. 13 And when you have seen it, you also (AA)shall [c]be gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother was gathered. 14 For in the Wilderness of Zin, during the strife of the congregation, you (AB)rebelled against My command to hallow Me at the waters before their eyes.” (These are the (AC)waters of Meribah, at Kadesh in the Wilderness of Zin.)

15 Then Moses spoke to the Lord, saying: 16 “Let the Lord, (AD)the God of the spirits of all flesh, set a man over the congregation, 17 (AE)who may go out before them and go in before them, who may lead them out and bring them in, that the congregation of the Lord may not be (AF)like sheep which have no shepherd.”

18 And the Lord said to Moses: “Take Joshua the son of Nun with you, a man (AG)in whom is the Spirit, and (AH)lay your hand on him; 19 set him before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation, and (AI)inaugurate[d] him in their sight. 20 And (AJ)you shall give some of your authority to him, that all the congregation of the children of Israel (AK)may be obedient. 21 (AL)He shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire before the Lord for him (AM)by the judgment of the Urim. (AN)At his word they shall go out, and at his word they shall come in, he and all the children of Israel with him—all the congregation.”

22 So Moses did as the Lord commanded him. He took Joshua and set him before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation. 23 And he laid his hands on him (AO)and [e]inaugurated him, just as the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses.

Daily Offerings(AP)

28 Now the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Command the children of Israel, and say to them, ‘My offering, (AQ)My food for My offerings made by fire as a sweet aroma to Me, you shall be careful to offer to Me at their appointed time.’

“And you shall say to them, (AR)‘This is the offering made by fire which you shall offer to the Lord: two male lambs in their first year without blemish, day by day, as a regular burnt offering. The one lamb you shall offer in the morning, the other lamb you shall offer in the evening, and (AS)one-tenth of an ephah of fine flour as a (AT)grain offering mixed with one-fourth of a hin of pressed oil. It is (AU)a regular burnt offering which was ordained at Mount Sinai for a sweet aroma, an offering made by fire to the Lord. And its drink offering shall be one-fourth of a hin for each lamb; (AV)in a holy place you shall pour out the drink to the Lord as an offering. The other lamb you shall offer in the evening; as the morning grain offering and its drink offering, you shall offer it as an offering made by fire, a [f]sweet aroma to the Lord.

Sabbath Offerings

‘And on the Sabbath day two lambs in their first year, without blemish, and two-tenths of an ephah of fine flour as a grain offering, mixed with oil, with its drink offering— 10 this is (AW)the burnt offering for every Sabbath, besides the regular burnt offering with its drink offering.

Monthly Offerings

11 (AX)‘At the beginnings of your months you shall present a burnt offering to the Lord: two young bulls, one ram, and seven lambs in their first year, without blemish; 12 (AY)three-tenths of an ephah of fine flour as a grain offering, mixed with oil, for each bull; two-tenths of an ephah of fine flour as a grain offering, mixed with oil, for the one ram; 13 and one-tenth of an ephah of fine flour, mixed with oil, as a grain offering for each lamb, as a burnt offering of sweet aroma, an offering made by fire to the Lord. 14 Their drink offering shall be half a hin of wine for a bull, one-third of a hin for a ram, and one-fourth of a hin for a lamb; this is the burnt offering for each month throughout the months of the year. 15 Also (AZ)one kid of the goats as a sin offering to the Lord shall be offered, besides the regular burnt offering and its drink offering.

52 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 53 [a]Among these the land shall be divided as an inheritance according to the number of names. 54 (A)To a larger group you shall increase their inheritance, and to a smaller group you shall decrease their inheritance; each shall be given their inheritance corresponding to the total of those who were numbered of them. 55 But the land shall be (B)divided by lot. They shall receive their inheritance according to the names of the tribes of their fathers. 56 Corresponding to the selection by lot, their inheritance shall be divided between the larger and the smaller groups.”

57 (C)These are those who were numbered of the Levites according to their families: of Gershon, the family of the Gershonites; of Kohath, the family of the Kohathites; of Merari, the family of the Merarites. 58 These are the families of Levi: the family of the Libnites, the family of the Hebronites, the family of the Mahlites, the family of the Mushites, and the family of the Korahites. (D)Kohath fathered Amram. 59 And the name of Amram’s wife (E)was Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt; and she bore to Amram Aaron and Moses, and their sister Miriam. 60 (F)And to Aaron were born Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. 61 (G)But Nadab and Abihu died when they offered [b]strange fire before the Lord. 62 Those who were numbered of them were (H)twenty-three thousand, every male from a month old and upward, for (I)they were not numbered among the sons of Israel (J)since no inheritance was given to them among the sons of Israel.

63 These are the ones who were numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who numbered the sons of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho. 64 (K)But among these there was not a man of those who were numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest, who numbered the sons of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai. 65 For the Lord had said [c]of them, “(L)They shall certainly die in the wilderness.” And not a man was left of them, (M)except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.

A Law of Inheritance

27 Then (N)the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph, came forward; and these are (O)the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. They stood before Moses, before Eleazar the priest, before the leaders, and all the congregation at the entrance of the tent of meeting, saying, “Our father (P)died in the wilderness, yet he was not among the group of those who gathered together against the Lord, in the group of Korah; but he died in his own sin, and (Q)he had no sons. Why should the name of our father be withdrawn from among his family simply because he had no son? Give us property among our father’s brothers.” (R)So Moses brought their case before the Lord.

Then the Lord said to [d]Moses, (S)The daughters of Zelophehad are right about their statements. You shall certainly give them hereditary property among their father’s brothers, and you shall transfer the inheritance of their father to them. Further, you shall speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘If a man dies and has no son, then you shall transfer his inheritance to his daughter. And if he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers. 10 If he has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father’s brothers. 11 And if his father has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his nearest relative in his own family, and he shall take possession of it; and it shall be a (T)statutory ordinance to the sons of Israel, just as the Lord has commanded Moses.’”

12 (U)Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go up to this (V)mountain of Abarim, and see the land which I have given to the sons of Israel. 13 When you have seen it, you too (W)will be gathered to your people, (X)just as Aaron your brother [e]was; 14 for in the wilderness of Zin, during the strife of the congregation, (Y)you rebelled against My [f]command to treat Me as holy before their eyes at the water.” (These are the waters of Meribah of Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.)

Joshua to Succeed Moses

15 Then Moses spoke to the Lord, saying, 16 (Z)May the Lord, the God of the spirits of [g]humanity, appoint a man over the congregation, 17 who (AA)will go out [h]and come in before them, and lead them out and [i]bring them in, so that the congregation of the Lord will not be (AB)like sheep that have no shepherd.” 18 So the Lord said to Moses, “[j]Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man (AC)in whom is the Spirit, and (AD)lay your hand on him; 19 and have him stand before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation, and (AE)commission him in their sight. 20 And you shall put some of your [k]authority on him, so that all the congregation of the sons of Israel will obey him. 21 Moreover, he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him (AF)by the judgment of the Urim before the Lord. At his [l]command they shall go out, and at his [m]command they shall come in, both he and all the sons of Israel with him, all the congregation.” 22 Then Moses did just as the Lord commanded him; he took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation. 23 Then he laid his hands on him and (AG)commissioned him, just as the Lord had spoken [n]through Moses.

Laws for Offerings

28 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Command the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘You shall be careful to present to Me My offering, My (AH)food for My offerings by fire, of a soothing aroma to Me, at their appointed time.’ (AI)And you shall say to them, ‘This is the offering by fire which you shall offer to the Lord: two male lambs one year old without defect as a continual burnt offering every day. You shall offer the one lamb in the morning, and the other lamb you shall offer [o]at twilight; also (AJ)a tenth of an ephah of fine flour as a (AK)grain offering, mixed with a fourth of a [p]hin of pure oil. It is a continual burnt offering which was ordained on Mount Sinai as a soothing aroma, an offering by fire to the Lord. Then the drink offering with it shall be a fourth of a hin for each lamb; (AL)in the Holy Place pour out a drink offering of strong drink to the Lord. The other lamb you shall offer [q]at twilight; as the grain offering of the morning and as its drink offering, you shall offer it, an offering by fire, a soothing aroma to the Lord.

‘Then on the Sabbath day two male lambs one year old without defect, and two-tenths of an [r]ephah of fine flour mixed with oil as a grain offering, and its drink offering: 10 This is the burnt offering of every Sabbath in addition to the (AM)continual burnt offering and its drink offering.

11 ‘Then (AN)at the beginning of each of your months you shall present a burnt offering to the Lord: two [s]bulls and one ram, seven male lambs one year old without defect; 12 (AO)and three-tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil as a grain offering, for each bull; and two-tenths of fine flour mixed with oil as a grain offering, for the one ram; 13 and a tenth of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil as a grain offering for each lamb, as a burnt offering of a soothing aroma, an offering by fire to the Lord. 14 Their drink offerings shall be half a hin of wine for a bull and a third of a hin for the ram and a fourth of a hin for a lamb; this is the burnt offering of each month throughout the months of the year. 15 And one male goat as a sin offering to the Lord; it shall be offered with its drink offering in addition to the (AP)continual burnt offering.

52 Then the Lord said to Moses, 53 “Divide the land among the tribes, and distribute the grants of land in proportion to the tribes’ populations, as indicated by the number of names on the list. 54 Give the larger tribes more land and the smaller tribes less land, each group receiving a grant in proportion to the size of its population. 55 But you must assign the land by lot, and give land to each ancestral tribe according to the number of names on the list. 56 Each grant of land must be assigned by lot among the larger and smaller tribal groups.”

The Tribe of Levi

57 This is the record of the Levites who were counted according to their clans:

The Gershonite clan, named after their ancestor Gershon.
The Kohathite clan, named after their ancestor Kohath.
The Merarite clan, named after their ancestor Merari.

58 The Libnites, the Hebronites, the Mahlites, the Mushites, and the Korahites were all subclans of the Levites.

Now Kohath was the ancestor of Amram, 59 and Amram’s wife was named Jochebed. She also was a descendant of Levi, born among the Levites in the land of Egypt. Amram and Jochebed became the parents of Aaron, Moses, and their sister, Miriam. 60 To Aaron were born Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. 61 But Nadab and Abihu died when they burned before the Lord the wrong kind of fire, different than he had commanded.

62 The men from the Levite clans who were one month old or older numbered 23,000. But the Levites were not included in the registration of the rest of the people of Israel because they were not given an allotment of land when it was divided among the Israelites.

63 So these are the results of the registration of the people of Israel as conducted by Moses and Eleazar the priest on the plains of Moab beside the Jordan River, across from Jericho. 64 Not one person on this list had been among those listed in the previous registration taken by Moses and Aaron in the wilderness of Sinai. 65 For the Lord had said of them, “They will all die in the wilderness.” Not one of them survived except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

The Daughters of Zelophehad

27 One day a petition was presented by the daughters of Zelophehad—Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. Their father, Zelophehad, was a descendant of Hepher son of Gilead, son of Makir, son of Manasseh, son of Joseph. These women stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the tribal leaders, and the entire community at the entrance of the Tabernacle.[a] “Our father died in the wilderness,” they said. “He was not among Korah’s followers, who rebelled against the Lord; he died because of his own sin. But he had no sons. Why should the name of our father disappear from his clan just because he had no sons? Give us property along with the rest of our relatives.”

So Moses brought their case before the Lord. And the Lord replied to Moses, “The claim of the daughters of Zelophehad is legitimate. You must give them a grant of land along with their father’s relatives. Assign them the property that would have been given to their father.

“And give the following instructions to the people of Israel: If a man dies and has no son, then give his inheritance to his daughters. And if he has no daughter either, transfer his inheritance to his brothers. 10 If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father’s brothers. 11 But if his father has no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan. This is a legal requirement for the people of Israel, just as the Lord commanded Moses.”

Joshua Chosen to Lead Israel

12 One day the Lord said to Moses, “Climb one of the mountains east of the river,[b] and look out over the land I have given the people of Israel. 13 After you have seen it, you will die like your brother, Aaron, 14 for you both rebelled against my instructions in the wilderness of Zin. When the people of Israel rebelled, you failed to demonstrate my holiness to them at the waters.” (These are the waters of Meribah at Kadesh[c] in the wilderness of Zin.)

15 Then Moses said to the Lord, 16 “O Lord, you are the God who gives breath to all creatures. Please appoint a new man as leader for the community. 17 Give them someone who will guide them wherever they go and will lead them into battle, so the community of the Lord will not be like sheep without a shepherd.”

18 The Lord replied, “Take Joshua son of Nun, who has the Spirit in him, and lay your hands on him. 19 Present him to Eleazar the priest before the whole community, and publicly commission him to lead the people. 20 Transfer some of your authority to him so the whole community of Israel will obey him. 21 When direction from the Lord is needed, Joshua will stand before Eleazar the priest, who will use the Urim—one of the sacred lots cast before the Lord—to determine his will. This is how Joshua and the rest of the community of Israel will determine everything they should do.”

22 So Moses did as the Lord commanded. He presented Joshua to Eleazar the priest and the whole community. 23 Moses laid his hands on him and commissioned him to lead the people, just as the Lord had commanded through Moses.

The Daily Offerings

28 The Lord said to Moses, “Give these instructions to the people of Israel: The offerings you present as special gifts are a pleasing aroma to me; they are my food. See to it that they are brought at the appointed times and offered according to my instructions.

“Say to the people: This is the special gift you must present to the Lord as your daily burnt offering. You must offer two one-year-old male lambs with no defects. Sacrifice one lamb in the morning and the other in the evening. With each lamb you must offer a grain offering of two quarts[d] of choice flour mixed with one quart[e] of pure oil of pressed olives. This is the regular burnt offering instituted at Mount Sinai as a special gift, a pleasing aroma to the Lord. Along with it you must present the proper liquid offering of one quart of alcoholic drink with each lamb, poured out in the Holy Place as an offering to the Lord. Offer the second lamb in the evening with the same grain offering and liquid offering. It, too, is a special gift, a pleasing aroma to the Lord.

The Sabbath Offerings

“On the Sabbath day, sacrifice two one-year-old male lambs with no defects. They must be accompanied by a grain offering of four quarts[f] of choice flour moistened with olive oil, and a liquid offering. 10 This is the burnt offering to be presented each Sabbath day, in addition to the regular burnt offering and its accompanying liquid offering.

The Monthly Offerings

11 “On the first day of each month, present an extra burnt offering to the Lord of two young bulls, one ram, and seven one-year-old male lambs, all with no defects. 12 These must be accompanied by grain offerings of choice flour moistened with olive oil—six quarts[g] with each bull, four quarts with the ram, 13 and two quarts with each lamb. This burnt offering will be a special gift, a pleasing aroma to the Lord. 14 You must also present a liquid offering with each sacrifice: two quarts[h] of wine for each bull, a third of a gallon[i] for the ram, and one quart[j] for each lamb. Present this monthly burnt offering on the first day of each month throughout the year.

15 “On the first day of each month, you must also offer one male goat for a sin offering to the Lord. This is in addition to the regular burnt offering and its accompanying liquid offering.

52-54 God spoke to Moses: “Divide up the inheritance of the land based on population. A larger group gets a larger inheritance; a smaller group gets a smaller inheritance—each gets its inheritance based on the population count.

55-56 “Make sure that the land is assigned by lot.

“Each group’s inheritance is based on population, the number of names listed in its ancestral tribe, divided among the many and the few by lot.”

* * *

57-58 These are the numberings of the Levites by clan:

Gershon and the Gershonite clan,

Kohath and the Kohathite clan,

Merari and the Merarite clan.

The Levite clans also included:

the Libnite clan,

the Hebronite clan,

the Mahlite clan,

the Mushite clan,

the Korahite clan.

58-61 Kohath was the father of Amram. Amram’s wife was Jochebed, a descendant of Levi, born into the Levite family during the Egyptian years. Jochebed bore Aaron, Moses, and their sister Miriam to Amram. Aaron was the father of Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar; however, Nadab and Abihu died when they offered unauthorized sacrifice in the presence of God.

62 The numbering of Levite males one month and older came to 23,000. They hadn’t been counted in with the rest of the People of Israel because they didn’t inherit any land.

63-65 These are the ones numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest, the People of Israel counted in the Plains of Moab at Jordan-Jericho. Not one of them had been among those counted by Moses and Aaron the priest in the census of the People of Israel taken in the Wilderness of Sinai. For God had said of them, “They’ll die, die in the wilderness—not one of them will be left except for Caleb son of Jephunneh, and Joshua son of Nun.”

The Daughters of Zelophehad

27 The daughters of Zelophehad showed up. Their father was the son of Hepher son of Gilead son of Makir son of Manasseh, belonging to the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph. The daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

2-4 They came to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting. They stood before Moses and Eleazar the priest and before the leaders and the congregation and said, “Our father died in the wilderness. He wasn’t part of Korah’s rebel anti-God gang. He died for his own sins. And he left no sons. But why should our father’s name die out from his clan just because he had no sons? So give us an inheritance among our father’s relatives.”

Moses brought their case to God.

6-7 God ruled: “Zelophehad’s daughters are right. Give them land as an inheritance among their father’s relatives. Give them their father’s inheritance.

8-11 “Then tell the People of Israel, If a man dies and leaves no son, give his inheritance to his daughter. If he has no daughter, give it to his brothers. If he has no brothers, give it to his father’s brothers. If his father had no brothers, give it to the nearest relative so that the inheritance stays in the family. This is the standard procedure for the People of Israel, as commanded by God through Moses.”

Joshua

12-14 God said to Moses, “Climb up into the Abarim Mountains and look over at the land that I am giving to the People of Israel. When you’ve had a good look you’ll be joined to your ancestors in the grave—yes, you also along with Aaron your brother. This goes back to the day when the congregation quarreled in the Wilderness of Zin and you didn’t honor me in holy reverence before them in the matter of the waters, the Waters of Meribah (Quarreling) at Kadesh in the Wilderness of Zin.”

15-17 Moses responded to God: “Let God, the God of the spirits of everyone living, set a man over this community to lead them, to show the way ahead and bring them back home so God’s community will not be like sheep without a shepherd.”

18-21 God said to Moses, “Take Joshua the son of Nun—the Spirit is in him!—and place your hand on him. Stand him before Eleazar the priest in front of the entire congregation and commission him with everyone watching. Pass your magisterial authority over to him so that the whole congregation of the People of Israel will listen obediently to him. He is to consult with Eleazar the priest who, using the oracle-Urim, will prayerfully advise him in the presence of God. He will command the People of Israel, the entire community, in all their comings and goings.”

22-23 Moses followed God’s orders. He took Joshua and stood him before Eleazar the priest in front of the entire community. He laid his hands on him and commissioned him, following the procedures God had given Moses.

Offerings

28 1-8 God spoke to Moses: “Command the People of Israel. Tell them, You’re in charge of presenting my food, my Fire-Gifts of pleasing fragrance, at the set times. Tell them, This is the Fire-Gift that you are to present to God: two healthy yearling lambs each day as a regular Whole-Burnt-Offering. Sacrifice one lamb in the morning, the other in the evening, together with two quarts of fine flour mixed with a quart of olive oil for a Grain-Offering. This is the standard Whole-Burnt-Offering instituted at Mount Sinai as a pleasing fragrance, a Fire-Gift to God. The Drink-Offering that goes with it is a quart of strong beer with each lamb. Pour out the Drink-Offering before God in the Sanctuary. Sacrifice the second lamb in the evening with the Grain-Offering and Drink-Offering the same as in the morning—a Fire-Gift of pleasing fragrance for God.

12-14 “A Grain-Offering of six quarts of fine flour mixed with oil goes with each bull, four quarts of fine flour mixed with oil with the ram, and two quarts of fine flour mixed with oil with each lamb. This is for a Whole-Burnt-Offering, a pleasing fragrance, a Fire-Gift to God. Also, Drink-Offerings of two quarts of wine for each bull, one and a quarter quarts of wine for the ram, and a quart of wine for each lamb are to be poured out.

14-15 “This is the first of the month Whole-Burnt-Offering to be made throughout the year. In addition to the regular Whole-Burnt-Offering with its accompanying Drink-Offering, a he-goat is to be offered to God as an Absolution-Offering.
