Quail From the Lord
4 The rabble with them began to crave other food,(A) and again the Israelites started wailing(B) and said, “If only we had meat to eat! 5 We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost—also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic.(C) 6 But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!(D)”
7 The manna was like coriander seed(E) and looked like resin.(F) 8 The people went around gathering it,(G) and then ground it in a hand mill or crushed it in a mortar. Ezra 9:7-9
New International Version
7 From the days of our ancestors(A) until now, our guilt has been great. Because of our sins, we and our kings and our priests have been subjected to the sword(B) and captivity,(C) to pillage and humiliation(D) at the hand of foreign kings, as it is today.
8 “But now, for a brief moment, the Lord our God has been gracious(E) in leaving us a remnant(F) and giving us a firm place[a](G) in his sanctuary, and so our God gives light to our eyes(H) and a little relief in our bondage. 9 Though we are slaves,(I) our God has not forsaken us in our bondage. He has shown us kindness(J) in the sight of the kings of Persia: He has granted us new life to rebuild the house of our God and repair its ruins,(K) and he has given us a wall of protection in Judah and Jerusalem.
