Offerings at the Dedication of the Tabernacle

7 When Moses finished setting up the tabernacle,^(A) he anointed^(B) and consecrated it and all its furnishings.^(C) He also anointed and consecrated the altar and all its utensils.^(D) ²Then the leaders of Israel,^(E) the heads of families who were the tribal leaders in charge of those who were counted,^(F) made offerings. ³They brought as their gifts before the Lord six covered carts^(G) and twelve oxen—an ox from each leader and a cart from every two. These they presented before the tabernacle.

⁴The Lord said to Moses, ⁵“Accept these from them, that they may be used in the work at the tent of meeting. Give them to the Levites as each man’s work requires.”

⁶So Moses took the carts and oxen and gave them to the Levites. ⁷He gave two carts and four oxen to the Gershonites,^(H) as their work required, ⁸and he gave four carts and eight oxen to the Merarites,^(I) as their work required. They were all under the direction of Ithamar son of Aaron, the priest. ⁹But Moses did not give any to the Kohathites,^(J) because they were to carry on their shoulders^(K) the holy things, for which they were responsible.

¹⁰When the altar was anointed,^(L) the leaders brought their offerings for its dedication^(M) and presented them before the altar. ¹¹For the Lord had said to Moses, “Each day one leader is to bring his offering for the dedication of the altar.”

¹²The one who brought his offering on the first day was Nahshon^(N) son of Amminadab of the tribe of Judah.

¹³His offering was one silver plate weighing a hundred and thirty shekels^[a] and one silver sprinkling bowl^(O) weighing seventy shekels,^[b]^(P) both according to the sanctuary shekel,^(Q) each filled with the finest flour mixed with olive oil as a grain offering;^(R) ¹⁴one gold dish^(S) weighing ten shekels,^[c]^(T) filled with incense;^(U) ¹⁵one young bull,^(V) one ram and one male lamb a year old for a burnt offering;^(W) ¹⁶one male goat for a sin offering^[d];^(X) ¹⁷and two oxen, five rams, five male goats and five male lambs a year old to be sacrificed as a fellowship offering.^(Y) This was the offering of Nahshon son of Amminadab.^(Z)

¹⁸On the second day Nethanel son of Zuar,^(AA) the leader of Issachar, brought his offering.

¹⁹The offering he brought was one silver plate weighing a hundred and thirty shekels and one silver sprinkling bowl weighing seventy shekels, both according to the sanctuary shekel, each filled with the finest flour mixed with olive oil as a grain offering; ²⁰one gold dish^(AB) weighing ten shekels, filled with incense; ²¹one young bull, one ram and one male lamb a year old for a burnt offering; ²²one male goat for a sin offering; ²³and two oxen, five rams, five male goats and five male lambs a year old to be sacrificed as a fellowship offering. This was the offering of Nethanel son of Zuar.

²⁴On the third day, Eliab son of Helon,^(AC) the leader of the people of Zebulun, brought his offering.

²⁵His offering was one silver plate weighing a hundred and thirty shekels and one silver sprinkling bowl weighing seventy shekels, both according to the sanctuary shekel, each filled with the finest flour mixed with olive oil as a grain offering; ²⁶one gold dish weighing ten shekels, filled with incense; ²⁷one young bull, one ram and one male lamb a year old for a burnt offering; ²⁸one male goat for a sin offering; ²⁹and two oxen, five rams, five male goats and five male lambs a year old to be sacrificed as a fellowship offering. This was the offering of Eliab son of Helon.

³⁰On the fourth day Elizur son of Shedeur,^(AD) the leader of the people of Reuben, brought his offering.

³¹His offering was one silver plate weighing a hundred and thirty shekels and one silver sprinkling bowl weighing seventy shekels, both according to the sanctuary shekel, each filled with the finest flour mixed with olive oil as a grain offering; ³²one gold dish weighing ten shekels, filled with incense; ³³one young bull, one ram and one male lamb a year old for a burnt offering; ³⁴one male goat for a sin offering; ³⁵and two oxen, five rams, five male goats and five male lambs a year old to be sacrificed as a fellowship offering. This was the offering of Elizur son of Shedeur.

³⁶On the fifth day Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai,^(AE) the leader of the people of Simeon, brought his offering.

³⁷His offering was one silver plate weighing a hundred and thirty shekels and one silver sprinkling bowl weighing seventy shekels, both according to the sanctuary shekel, each filled with the finest flour mixed with olive oil as a grain offering; ³⁸one gold dish weighing ten shekels, filled with incense; ³⁹one young bull, one ram and one male lamb a year old for a burnt offering; ⁴⁰one male goat for a sin offering; ⁴¹and two oxen, five rams, five male goats and five male lambs a year old to be sacrificed as a fellowship offering. This was the offering of Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai.

⁴²On the sixth day Eliasaph son of Deuel,^(AF) the leader of the people of Gad, brought his offering.

⁴³His offering was one silver plate weighing a hundred and thirty shekels and one silver sprinkling bowl weighing seventy shekels, both according to the sanctuary shekel, each filled with the finest flour mixed with olive oil as a grain offering; ⁴⁴one gold dish weighing ten shekels, filled with incense; ⁴⁵one young bull, one ram and one male lamb a year old for a burnt offering; ⁴⁶one male goat for a sin offering; ⁴⁷and two oxen, five rams, five male goats and five male lambs a year old to be sacrificed as a fellowship offering. This was the offering of Eliasaph son of Deuel.

⁴⁸On the seventh day Elishama son of Ammihud,^(AG) the leader of the people of Ephraim, brought his offering.

⁴⁹His offering was one silver plate weighing a hundred and thirty shekels and one silver sprinkling bowl weighing seventy shekels, both according to the sanctuary shekel, each filled with the finest flour mixed with olive oil as a grain offering; ⁵⁰one gold dish weighing ten shekels, filled with incense; ⁵¹one young bull, one ram and one male lamb a year old for a burnt offering; ⁵²one male goat for a sin offering; ⁵³and two oxen, five rams, five male goats and five male lambs a year old to be sacrificed as a fellowship offering. This was the offering of Elishama son of Ammihud.^(AH)

⁵⁴On the eighth day Gamaliel son of Pedahzur,^(AI) the leader of the people of Manasseh, brought his offering.

⁵⁵His offering was one silver plate weighing a hundred and thirty shekels and one silver sprinkling bowl weighing seventy shekels, both according to the sanctuary shekel, each filled with the finest flour mixed with olive oil as a grain offering; ⁵⁶one gold dish weighing ten shekels, filled with incense; ⁵⁷one young bull, one ram and one male lamb a year old for a burnt offering; ⁵⁸one male goat for a sin offering; ⁵⁹and two oxen, five rams, five male goats and five male lambs a year old to be sacrificed as a fellowship offering. This was the offering of Gamaliel son of Pedahzur.

⁶⁰On the ninth day Abidan son of Gideoni,^(AJ) the leader of the people of Benjamin, brought his offering.

⁶¹His offering was one silver plate weighing a hundred and thirty shekels and one silver sprinkling bowl weighing seventy shekels, both according to the sanctuary shekel, each filled with the finest flour mixed with olive oil as a grain offering; ⁶²one gold dish weighing ten shekels, filled with incense; ⁶³one young bull, one ram and one male lamb a year old for a burnt offering; ⁶⁴one male goat for a sin offering; ⁶⁵and two oxen, five rams, five male goats and five male lambs a year old to be sacrificed as a fellowship offering. This was the offering of Abidan son of Gideoni.

⁶⁶On the tenth day Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai,^(AK) the leader of the people of Dan, brought his offering.

⁶⁷His offering was one silver plate weighing a hundred and thirty shekels and one silver sprinkling bowl weighing seventy shekels, both according to the sanctuary shekel, each filled with the finest flour mixed with olive oil as a grain offering; ⁶⁸one gold dish weighing ten shekels, filled with incense; ⁶⁹one young bull, one ram and one male lamb a year old for a burnt offering; ⁷⁰one male goat for a sin offering; ⁷¹and two oxen, five rams, five male goats and five male lambs a year old to be sacrificed as a fellowship offering. This was the offering of Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai.

⁷²On the eleventh day Pagiel son of Okran,^(AL) the leader of the people of Asher, brought his offering.

⁷³His offering was one silver plate weighing a hundred and thirty shekels and one silver sprinkling bowl weighing seventy shekels, both according to the sanctuary shekel, each filled with the finest flour mixed with olive oil as a grain offering; ⁷⁴one gold dish weighing ten shekels, filled with incense; ⁷⁵one young bull, one ram and one male lamb a year old for a burnt offering; ⁷⁶one male goat for a sin offering; ⁷⁷and two oxen, five rams, five male goats and five male lambs a year old to be sacrificed as a fellowship offering. This was the offering of Pagiel son of Okran.

⁷⁸On the twelfth day Ahira son of Enan,^(AM) the leader of the people of Naphtali, brought his offering.

⁷⁹His offering was one silver plate weighing a hundred and thirty shekels and one silver sprinkling bowl weighing seventy shekels, both according to the sanctuary shekel, each filled with the finest flour mixed with olive oil as a grain offering; ⁸⁰one gold dish weighing ten shekels, filled with incense; ⁸¹one young bull, one ram and one male lamb a year old for a burnt offering; ⁸²one male goat for a sin offering; ⁸³and two oxen, five rams, five male goats and five male lambs a year old to be sacrificed as a fellowship offering. This was the offering of Ahira son of Enan.

⁸⁴These were the offerings of the Israelite leaders for the dedication of the altar when it was anointed:^(AN) twelve silver plates, twelve silver sprinkling bowls^(AO) and twelve gold dishes.^(AP) ⁸⁵Each silver plate weighed a hundred and thirty shekels, and each sprinkling bowl seventy shekels. Altogether, the silver dishes weighed two thousand four hundred shekels,^[e] according to the sanctuary shekel.^(AQ) ⁸⁶The twelve gold dishes filled with incense weighed ten shekels each, according to the sanctuary shekel.^(AR) Altogether, the gold dishes weighed a hundred and twenty shekels.^[f] ⁸⁷The total number of animals for the burnt offering^(AS) came to twelve young bulls, twelve rams and twelve male lambs a year old, together with their grain offering.^(AT) Twelve male goats were used for the sin offering.^(AU) ⁸⁸The total number of animals for the sacrifice of the fellowship offering^(AV) came to twenty-four oxen, sixty rams, sixty male goats and sixty male lambs^(AW) a year old. These were the offerings for the dedication of the altar after it was anointed.^(AX)

⁸⁹When Moses entered the tent of meeting^(AY) to speak with the Lord,^(AZ) he heard the voice speaking to him from between the two cherubim above the atonement cover^(BA) on the ark of the covenant law.^(BB) In this way the Lord spoke to him.

Setting Up the Lamps

8 The Lord said to Moses, ²“Speak to Aaron and say to him, ‘When you set up the lamps, see that all seven light up the area in front of the lampstand.^(BC)’”

³Aaron did so; he set up the lamps so that they faced forward on the lampstand, just as the Lord commanded Moses. ⁴This is how the lampstand was made: It was made of hammered gold^(BD)—from its base to its blossoms. The lampstand was made exactly like the pattern^(BE) the Lord had shown Moses.

The Setting Apart of the Levites

⁵The Lord said to Moses: ⁶“Take the Levites from among all the Israelites and make them ceremonially clean.^(BF) ⁷To purify them, do this: Sprinkle the water of cleansing^(BG) on them; then have them shave their whole bodies^(BH) and wash their clothes.^(BI) And so they will purify themselves.^(BJ) ⁸Have them take a young bull with its grain offering of the finest flour mixed with olive oil;^(BK) then you are to take a second young bull for a sin offering.^[g]^(BL) ⁹Bring the Levites to the front of the tent of meeting^(BM) and assemble the whole Israelite community.^(BN) ¹⁰You are to bring the Levites before the Lord, and the Israelites are to lay their hands on them.^(BO) ¹¹Aaron is to present the Levites before the Lord as a wave offering^(BP) from the Israelites, so that they may be ready to do the work of the Lord.

¹²“Then the Levites are to lay their hands on the heads of the bulls,^(BQ) using one for a sin offering^(BR) to the Lord and the other for a burnt offering,^(BS) to make atonement^(BT) for the Levites. ¹³Have the Levites stand in front of Aaron and his sons and then present them as a wave offering^(BU) to the Lord. ¹⁴In this way you are to set the Levites apart from the other Israelites, and the Levites will be mine.^(BV)

¹⁵“After you have purified the Levites and presented them as a wave offering,^(BW) they are to come to do their work at the tent of meeting.^(BX) ¹⁶They are the Israelites who are to be given wholly to me. I have taken them as my own in place of the firstborn,^(BY) the first male offspring^(BZ) from every Israelite woman. ¹⁷Every firstborn male in Israel, whether human or animal,^(CA) is mine. When I struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, I set them apart for myself.^(CB) ¹⁸And I have taken the Levites in place of all the firstborn sons in Israel.^(CC) ¹⁹From among all the Israelites, I have given the Levites as gifts to Aaron and his sons^(CD) to do the work at the tent of meeting on behalf of the Israelites^(CE) and to make atonement for them^(CF) so that no plague will strike the Israelites when they go near the sanctuary.”

²⁰Moses, Aaron and the whole Israelite community did with the Levites just as the Lord commanded Moses. ²¹The Levites purified themselves and washed their clothes.^(CG) Then Aaron presented them as a wave offering before the Lord and made atonement^(CH) for them to purify them.^(CI) ²²After that, the Levites came to do their work^(CJ) at the tent of meeting under the supervision of Aaron and his sons. They did with the Levites just as the Lord commanded Moses.

²³The Lord said to Moses, ²⁴“This applies to the Levites: Men twenty-five years old or more^(CK) shall come to take part in the work at the tent of meeting,^(CL) ²⁵but at the age of fifty,^(CM) they must retire from their regular service and work no longer. ²⁶They may assist their brothers in performing their duties at the tent of meeting, but they themselves must not do the work.^(CN) This, then, is how you are to assign the responsibilities of the Levites.”

¹My heart is stirred by a noble theme
as I recite my verses for the king;
my tongue is the pen of a skillful writer.

²You are the most excellent of men
and your lips have been anointed with grace,^(B)
since God has blessed you forever.^(C)

³Gird your sword^(D) on your side, you mighty one;^(E)
    clothe yourself with splendor and majesty.^(F)
⁴In your majesty ride forth victoriously^(G)
    in the cause of truth, humility and justice;^(H)

Introduction^(A)

1 Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled^[a] among us, ²just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first^(B) were eyewitnesses^(C) and servants of the word.^(D) ³With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account^(E) for you, most excellent^(F) Theophilus,^(G) ⁴so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.^(H)

The Birth of John the Baptist Foretold

⁵In the time of Herod king of Judea^(I) there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah;^(J) his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. ⁶Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly.^(K) ⁷But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old.

⁸Once when Zechariah’s division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God,^(L) ⁹he was chosen by lot,^(M) according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.^(N) ¹⁰And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside.^(O)

¹¹Then an angel^(P) of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense.^(Q) ¹²When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear.^(R) ¹³But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid,^(S) Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John.^(T) ¹⁴He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth,^(U) ¹⁵for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink,^(V) and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit^(W) even before he is born.^(X) ¹⁶He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. ¹⁷And he will go on before the Lord,^(Y) in the spirit and power of Elijah,^(Z) to turn the hearts of the parents to their children^(AA) and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”^(AB)

¹⁸Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this?^(AC) I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.”^(AD)

¹⁹The angel said to him, “I am Gabriel.^(AE) I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. ²⁰And now you will be silent and not able to speak^(AF) until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time.”

²¹Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple. ²²When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs^(AG) to them but remained unable to speak.

²³When his time of service was completed, he returned home. ²⁴After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion. ²⁵“The Lord has done this for me,” she said. “In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace^(AH) among the people.”

The Birth of Jesus Foretold

²⁶In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel^(AI) to Nazareth,^(AJ) a town in Galilee, ²⁷to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph,^(AK) a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. ²⁸The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

²⁹Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. ³⁰But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid,^(AL) Mary; you have found favor with God.^(AM) ³¹You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.^(AN) ³²He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.^(AO) The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,^(AP) ³³and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom^(AQ) will never end.”^(AR)

³⁴“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

³⁵The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you,^(AS) and the power of the Most High^(AT) will overshadow you. So the holy one^(AU) to be born will be called^[b] the Son of God.^(AV) ³⁶Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child^(AW) in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. ³⁷For no word from God will ever fail.”^(AX)

³⁸“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

Mary Visits Elizabeth

³⁹At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea,^(AY) ⁴⁰where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. ⁴¹When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.^(AZ) ⁴²In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women,^(BA) and blessed is the child you will bear! ⁴³But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord^(BB) should come to me? ⁴⁴As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. ⁴⁵Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”

Mary’s Song^(BC)

⁴⁶And Mary said:

“My soul glorifies the Lord^(BD)
⁴⁷    and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,^(BE)
⁴⁸for he has been mindful
    of the humble state of his servant.^(BF)
From now on all generations will call me blessed,^(BG)
⁴⁹    for the Mighty One has done great things^(BH) for me—

⁵⁰His mercy extends to those who fear him,

⁵⁶Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.

The Birth of John the Baptist

⁵⁷When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son. ⁵⁸Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy.

⁵⁹On the eighth day they came to circumcise^(BQ) the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah, ⁶⁰but his mother spoke up and said, “No! He is to be called John.”^(BR)

⁶¹They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who has that name.”

⁶²Then they made signs^(BS) to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child. ⁶³He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s astonishment he wrote, “His name is John.”^(BT) ⁶⁴Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue set free, and he began to speak,^(BU) praising God. ⁶⁵All the neighbors were filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea^(BV) people were talking about all these things. ⁶⁶Everyone who heard this wondered about it, asking, “What then is this child going to be?” For the Lord’s hand was with him.^(BW)

Zechariah’s Song

⁶⁷His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit^(BX) and prophesied:^(BY)

⁶⁸“Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,^(BZ)
    because he has come to his people and redeemed them.^(CA)
⁶⁹He has raised up a horn^[c]^(CB) of salvation for us
    in the house of his servant David^(CC)
⁷⁰(as he said through his holy prophets of long ago),^(CD)
⁷¹salvation from our enemies
    and from the hand of all who hate us—
⁷²to show mercy to our ancestors^(CE)
    and to remember his holy covenant,^(CF)
⁷³    the oath he swore to our father Abraham:^(CG)
⁷⁴to rescue us from the hand of our enemies,
    and to enable us to serve him^(CH) without fear^(CI)
⁷⁵    in holiness and righteousness^(CJ) before him all our days.

⁷⁶And you, my child, will be called a prophet^(CK) of the Most High;^(CL)
    for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him,^(CM)
⁷⁷to give his people the knowledge of salvation
    through the forgiveness of their sins,^(CN)
⁷⁸because of the tender mercy of our God,
    by which the rising sun^(CO) will come to us from heaven
⁷⁹to shine on those living in darkness
    and in the shadow of death,^(CP)
to guide our feet into the path of peace.”^(CQ)

⁸⁰And the child grew and became strong in spirit^[d];^(CR) and he lived in the wilderness until he appeared publicly to Israel.
