12 And Balaam said to Balak, “Did I not tell your messengers whom you sent to me, 13 (A)‘If Balak should give me his house full of silver and gold, I would not be able to go beyond the word of the Lord, to do either good or bad (B)of my own will. What the Lord speaks, that will I speak’? 14 And now, behold, I am going to my people. Come, (C)I will let you know what this people will do to your people (D)in the latter days.”

Balaam's Final Oracle

15 (E)And he took up his discourse and said,

“The oracle of Balaam the son of Beor,
    the oracle of the man whose eye is opened,
16 the oracle of him who hears the words of God,
    and knows the knowledge of (F)the Most High,
who sees the vision of the Almighty,
    (G)falling down with his eyes uncovered:
17 (H)I see him, but not now;
    I behold him, but not near:
(I)a star shall come out of Jacob,
    and (J)a scepter shall rise out of Israel;
it shall (K)crush the forehead[a] of Moab
    and break down all the sons of Sheth.
18 (L)Edom shall be dispossessed;
    (M)Seir also, his enemies, shall be dispossessed.
    Israel is doing valiantly.
19 And one from Jacob shall exercise dominion
    and destroy the survivors of cities!”

20 Then he looked on Amalek and (N)took up his discourse and said,

“Amalek was the first among the nations,
    (O)but its end is utter destruction.”

21 And he looked on the Kenite, and took up his discourse and said,

“Enduring is your dwelling place,
    and your nest is set in the rock.
22 Nevertheless, Kain shall be burned
    when Asshur takes you away captive.”

23 And he took up his discourse and said,

“Alas, who shall live when God does this?
24     But ships shall come from (P)Kittim
and shall afflict Asshur and (Q)Eber;
    and he too (R)shall come to utter destruction.”

25 Then Balaam rose and (S)went back to his place. And Balak also went his way.

12 Balaam answered Balak, “Did I not tell the messengers you sent me,(A) 13 ‘Even if Balak gave me all the silver and gold in his palace, I could not do anything of my own accord, good or bad, to go beyond the command of the Lord(B)—and I must say only what the Lord says’?(C) 14 Now I am going back to my people, but come, let me warn you of what this people will do to your people in days to come.”(D)

Balaam’s Fourth Message

15 Then he spoke his message:

“The prophecy of Balaam son of Beor,
    the prophecy of one whose eye sees clearly,
16 the prophecy of one who hears the words(E) of God,
    who has knowledge from the Most High,(F)
who sees a vision from the Almighty,
    who falls prostrate, and whose eyes are opened:

17 “I see him, but not now;
    I behold him, but not near.(G)
A star will come out of Jacob;(H)
    a scepter will rise out of Israel.(I)
He will crush the foreheads of Moab,(J)
    the skulls[a](K) of[b] all the people of Sheth.[c]
18 Edom(L) will be conquered;
    Seir,(M) his enemy, will be conquered,(N)
    but Israel(O) will grow strong.
19 A ruler will come out of Jacob(P)
    and destroy the survivors of the city.”

Balaam’s Fifth Message

20 Then Balaam saw Amalek(Q) and spoke his message:

“Amalek was first among the nations,
    but their end will be utter destruction.”(R)

Balaam’s Sixth Message

21 Then he saw the Kenites(S) and spoke his message:

“Your dwelling place is secure,(T)
    your nest is set in a rock;
22 yet you Kenites will be destroyed
    when Ashur(U) takes you captive.”

24     Ships will come from the shores of Cyprus;(V)

    but they too will come to ruin.(Y)

Future Glory

18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time (A)are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation waits with eager longing for (B)the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation (C)was subjected to futility, not willingly, but (D)because of him who subjected it, in hope 21 that (E)the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that (F)the whole creation (G)has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have (H)the firstfruits of the Spirit, (I)groan inwardly as (J)we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, (K)the redemption of our bodies. 24 For (L)in this hope we were saved. Now (M)hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we (N)wait for it with patience.

Present Suffering and Future Glory

18 I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.(A) 19 For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God(B) to be revealed. 20 For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it,(C) in hope 21 that[a] the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay(D) and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God.(E)

22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning(F) as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. 23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit,(G) groan(H) inwardly as we wait eagerly(I) for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.(J) 24 For in this hope we were saved.(K) But hope that is seen is no hope at all.(L) Who hopes for what they already have? 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.(M)

Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection

23 The same day (A)Sadducees came to him, (B)who say that there is no resurrection, and they asked him a question, 24 saying, “Teacher, Moses said, (C)‘If a man dies having no children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.’ 25 Now there were seven brothers among us. The first married and died, and having no offspring left his wife to his brother. 26 So too the second and third, down to the seventh. 27 After them all, the woman died. 28 In the resurrection, therefore, of the seven, whose wife will she be? For they all had her.”

29 But Jesus answered them, “You are wrong, (D)because you know neither the Scriptures nor (E)the power of God. 30 For in the resurrection they neither (F)marry nor (G)are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. 31 And as for the resurrection of the dead, (H)have you not read what was said to you by God: 32 (I)‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not God of the dead, but of the living.” 33 And when the crowd heard it, (J)they were astonished at his teaching.

The Great Commandment

34 (K)But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced (L)the Sadducees, they gathered together. 35 (M)And one of them, (N)a lawyer, asked him a question (O)to test him. 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And he said to him, (P)“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And (Q)a second is like it: (R)You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 (S)On these two commandments depend (T)all the Law and the Prophets.”

Marriage at the Resurrection(A)

23 That same day the Sadducees,(B) who say there is no resurrection,(C) came to him with a question. 24 “Teacher,” they said, “Moses told us that if a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for him.(D) 25 Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died, and since he had no children, he left his wife to his brother. 26 The same thing happened to the second and third brother, right on down to the seventh. 27 Finally, the woman died. 28 Now then, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven, since all of them were married to her?”

29 Jesus replied, “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures(E) or the power of God. 30 At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage;(F) they will be like the angels in heaven. 31 But about the resurrection of the dead—have you not read what God said to you, 32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’[a]?(G) He is not the God of the dead but of the living.”

33 When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching.(H)

The Greatest Commandment(I)

34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees,(J) the Pharisees got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law,(K) tested him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[b](L) 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[c](M) 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”(N)
