³⁷ those men who spread the negative report about the land were struck down by the Lord.

⁵¹ On that same day the Lord brought the Israelites out of the land of Egypt according to their divisions.^(A)

⁵ But God was not pleased with most of them, for they were struck down in the wilderness.^(A)

⁶ Now these things became examples for us, so that we will not desire^(B) evil things as they did.^[a](C)

² You desire and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. You do not have because you do not ask.

Complaints about Food

⁴ Contemptible people^[a] among them^(A) had a strong craving^(B) for other food. The Israelites cried again and said, “Who will feed us meat?

³³ While the meat was still between their teeth, before it was chewed, the Lord’s anger burned^(A) against the people, and the Lord struck them with a very severe plague.^{(B) 34} So they named that place Kibroth-hattaavah,^[a] because there they buried the people who had craved the meat.
