¹⁶ The Lord said to Moses, ¹⁷ “These are the names of the men who are to assign the land for you as an inheritance: Eleazar the priest and Joshua^(A) son of Nun. ¹⁸ And appoint one leader from each tribe to help^(B) assign the land.^{(C) 19} These are their names:^(D)

²⁹ These are the men the Lord commanded to assign the inheritance to the Israelites in the land of Canaan.^(M)

⁸ The Levites and all the men of Judah did just as Jehoiada the priest ordered.^(A) Each one took his men—those who were going on duty on the Sabbath and those who were going off duty—for Jehoiada the priest had not released any of the divisions.^{(B) 9} Then he gave the commanders of units of a hundred the spears and the large and small shields that had belonged to King David and that were in the temple of God. ¹⁰ He stationed all the men, each with his weapon in his hand, around the king—near the altar and the temple, from the south side to the north side of the temple.

¹¹ Jehoiada and his sons brought out the king’s son and put the crown on him; they presented him with a copy^(C) of the covenant and proclaimed him king. They anointed him and shouted, “Long live the king!”

¹² When Athaliah heard the noise of the people running and cheering the king, she went to them at the temple of the Lord. ¹³ She looked, and there was the king,^(D) standing by his pillar^(E) at the entrance. The officers and the trumpeters were beside the king, and all the people of the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets, and musicians with their instruments were leading the praises. Then Athaliah tore her robes and shouted, “Treason! Treason!”

¹⁴ Jehoiada the priest sent out the commanders of units of a hundred, who were in charge of the troops, and said to them: “Bring her out between the ranks^[a] and put to the sword anyone who follows her.” For the priest had said, “Do not put her to death at the temple of the Lord.” ¹⁵ So they seized her as she reached the entrance of the Horse Gate^(F) on the palace grounds, and there they put her to death.

¹⁶ Jehoiada then made a covenant^(G) that he, the people and the king^[b] would be the Lord’s people. ¹⁷ All the people went to the temple of Baal and tore it down. They smashed the altars and idols and killed^(H) Mattan the priest of Baal in front of the altars.

¹⁸ Then Jehoiada placed the oversight of the temple of the Lord in the hands of the Levitical priests,^(I) to whom David had made assignments in the temple,^(J) to present the burnt offerings of the Lord as written in the Law of Moses, with rejoicing and singing, as David had ordered. ¹⁹ He also stationed gatekeepers^(K) at the gates of the Lord’s temple so that no one who was in any way unclean might enter.

²⁰ He took with him the commanders of hundreds, the nobles, the rulers of the people and all the people of the land and brought the king down from the temple of the Lord. They went into the palace through the Upper Gate^(L) and seated the king on the royal throne. ²¹ All the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was calm, because Athaliah had been slain with the sword.^(M)

Jesus Walks on the Water^(A)

¹⁶ When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, ¹⁷ where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. ¹⁸ A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. ¹⁹ When they had rowed about three or four miles,^[a] they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water;^(B) and they were frightened. ²⁰ But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.”^{(C) 21} Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.

²⁹ By faith the people passed through the Red Sea as on dry land; but when the Egyptians tried to do so, they were drowned.^(A)

³⁰ By faith the walls of Jericho fell, after the army had marched around them for seven days.^(B)

³¹ By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient.^[a](C)

³² And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon,^(D) Barak,^(E) Samson^(F) and Jephthah,^(G) about David^(H) and Samuel^(I) and the prophets, ³³ who through faith conquered kingdoms,^(J) administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions,^{(K) 34} quenched the fury of the flames,^(L) and escaped the edge of the sword;^(M) whose weakness was turned to strength;^(N) and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies.^{(O) 35} Women received back their dead, raised to life again.^(P) There were others who were tortured, refusing to be released so that they might gain an even better resurrection. ³⁶ Some faced jeers and flogging,^(Q) and even chains and imprisonment.^{(R) 37} They were put to death by stoning;^[b](S) they were sawed in two; they were killed by the sword.^(T) They went about in sheepskins and goatskins,^(U) destitute, persecuted and mistreated— ³⁸ the world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, living in caves^(V) and in holes in the ground.

³⁹ These were all commended^(W) for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised,^{(X) 40} since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us^(Y) would they be made perfect.^(Z)
