31 The Gadites and Reubenites answered, “Your servants will do what the Lord has said.(A) 32 We will cross over before the Lord into Canaan armed,(B) but the property we inherit will be on this side of the Jordan.(C)

33 Then Moses gave to the Gadites,(D) the Reubenites and the half-tribe of Manasseh(E) son of Joseph the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites(F) and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan(G)—the whole land with its cities and the territory around them.(H)

34 The Gadites built up Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,(I) 35 Atroth Shophan, Jazer,(J) Jogbehah,(K) 36 Beth Nimrah(L) and Beth Haran as fortified cities, and built pens for their flocks.(M) 37 And the Reubenites rebuilt Heshbon,(N) Elealeh(O) and Kiriathaim,(P) 38 as well as Nebo(Q) and Baal Meon (these names were changed) and Sibmah.(R) They gave names to the cities they rebuilt.

39 The descendants of Makir(S) son of Manasseh went to Gilead,(T) captured it and drove out the Amorites(U) who were there. 40 So Moses gave Gilead to the Makirites,(V) the descendants of Manasseh, and they settled there. 41 Jair,(W) a descendant of Manasseh, captured their settlements and called them Havvoth Jair.[a](X) 42 And Nobah captured Kenath(Y) and its surrounding settlements and called it Nobah(Z) after himself.(AA)

Ahab Killed at Ramoth Gilead(A)

28 So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah went up to Ramoth Gilead. 29 The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “I will enter the battle in disguise, but you wear your royal robes.” So the king of Israel disguised(B) himself and went into battle.

30 Now the king of Aram had ordered his chariot commanders, “Do not fight with anyone, small or great, except the king of Israel.” 31 When the chariot commanders saw Jehoshaphat, they thought, “This is the king of Israel.” So they turned to attack him, but Jehoshaphat cried out,(C) and the Lord helped him. God drew them away from him, 32 for when the chariot commanders saw that he was not the king of Israel, they stopped pursuing him.

33 But someone drew his bow at random and hit the king of Israel between the breastplate and the scale armor. The king told the chariot driver, “Wheel around and get me out of the fighting. I’ve been wounded.” 34 All day long the battle raged, and the king of Israel propped himself up in his chariot facing the Arameans until evening. Then at sunset he died.(D)

19 When Jehoshaphat king of Judah returned safely to his palace in Jerusalem, Jehu(E) the seer, the son of Hanani, went out to meet him and said to the king, “Should you help the wicked(F) and love[a] those who hate the Lord?(G) Because of this, the wrath(H) of the Lord is on you. There is, however, some good(I) in you, for you have rid the land of the Asherah poles(J) and have set your heart on seeking God.(K)

Hosea’s Reconciliation With His Wife

The Lord said to me, “Go, show your love to your wife again, though she is loved by another man and is an adulteress.(AI) Love her as the Lord loves the Israelites, though they turn to other gods and love the sacred raisin cakes.(AJ)

So I bought her for fifteen shekels[j] of silver and about a homer and a lethek[k] of barley. Then I told her, “You are to live with me many days; you must not be a prostitute or be intimate with any man, and I will behave the same way toward you.”

For the Israelites will live many days without king or prince,(AK) without sacrifice(AL) or sacred stones,(AM) without ephod(AN) or household gods.(AO) Afterward the Israelites will return and seek(AP) the Lord their God and David their king.(AQ) They will come trembling(AR) to the Lord and to his blessings in the last days.(AS)

  1. Proverbs 12:27 The meaning of the Hebrew for this word is uncertain.

At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.

The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,(A) 10 and so the Jewish leaders(B) said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”(C)

11 But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’

12 So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?”

13 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.

14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning(D) or something worse may happen to you.” 15 The man went away and told the Jewish leaders(E) that it was Jesus who had made him well.

The Authority of the Son

16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. 17 In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father(F) is always at his work(G) to this very day, and I too am working.” 18 For this reason they tried all the more to kill him;(H) not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.(I)

Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.”(A) He sets aside the first to establish the second. 10 And by that will, we have been made holy(B) through the sacrifice of the body(C) of Jesus Christ once for all.(D)

11 Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices,(E) which can never take away sins.(F) 12 But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins,(G) he sat down at the right hand of God,(H) 13 and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool.(I) 14 For by one sacrifice he has made perfect(J) forever those who are being made holy.(K)

15 The Holy Spirit also testifies(L) to us about this. First he says:

16 “This is the covenant I will make with them
after that time, says the Lord.
I will put my laws in their hearts,
and I will write them on their minds.”[a](M)

17 Then he adds:

“Their sins and lawless acts
    I will remember no more.”[b](N)

18 And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.
