The Census

1 The Lord spoke to Moses in the tent of meeting^(A) in the Desert of Sinai^(B) on the first day of the second month^(C) of the second year after the Israelites came out of Egypt.^(D) He said: ² “Take a census^(E) of the whole Israelite community by their clans and families,^(F) listing every man by name,^(G) one by one. ³ You and Aaron^(H) are to count according to their divisions all the men in Israel who are twenty years old or more^(I) and able to serve in the army.^{(J) 4} One man from each tribe,^(K) each of them the head of his family,^(L) is to help you.^{(M) 5} These are the names^(N) of the men who are to assist you:

Josiah Renews the Covenant^(A)(B)(C)(D)

23 Then the king called together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. ² He went up to the temple of the Lord with the people of Judah, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the priests and the prophets—all the people from the least to the greatest. He read^(E) in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant,^(F) which had been found in the temple of the Lord. ³ The king stood by the pillar^(G) and renewed the covenant^(H) in the presence of the Lord—to follow^(I) the Lord and keep his commands, statutes and decrees with all his heart and all his soul, thus confirming the words of the covenant written in this book. Then all the people pledged themselves to the covenant.

⁴ The king ordered Hilkiah the high priest, the priests next in rank and the doorkeepers^(J) to remove^(K) from the temple of the Lord all the articles made for Baal and Asherah and all the starry hosts. He burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of the Kidron Valley and took the ashes to Bethel. ⁵ He did away with the idolatrous priests appointed by the kings of Judah to burn incense on the high places of the towns of Judah and on those around Jerusalem—those who burned incense^(L) to Baal, to the sun and moon, to the constellations and to all the starry hosts.^{(M) 6} He took the Asherah pole from the temple of the Lord to the Kidron Valley^(N) outside Jerusalem and burned it there. He ground it to powder^(O) and scattered the dust over the graves^(P) of the common people.^{(Q) 7} He also tore down the quarters of the male shrine prostitutes^(R) that were in the temple of the Lord, the quarters where women did weaving for Asherah.

⁸ Josiah brought all the priests from the towns of Judah and desecrated the high places, from Geba^(S) to Beersheba, where the priests had burned incense. He broke down the gateway at the entrance of the Gate of Joshua, the city governor, which was on the left of the city gate. ⁹ Although the priests of the high places did not serve^(T) at the altar of the Lord in Jerusalem, they ate unleavened bread with their fellow priests.

¹⁰ He desecrated Topheth,^(U) which was in the Valley of Ben Hinnom,^(V) so no one could use it to sacrifice their son^(W) or daughter in the fire to Molek. ¹¹ He removed from the entrance to the temple of the Lord the horses that the kings of Judah^(X) had dedicated to the sun. They were in the court^[a] near the room of an official named Nathan-Melek. Josiah then burned the chariots dedicated to the sun.^(Y)

¹² He pulled down^(Z) the altars the kings of Judah had erected on the roof^(AA) near the upper room of Ahaz, and the altars Manasseh had built in the two courts^(AB) of the temple of the Lord. He removed them from there, smashed them to pieces and threw the rubble into the Kidron Valley.^{(AC) 13} The king also desecrated the high places that were east of Jerusalem on the south of the Hill of Corruption—the ones Solomon^(AD) king of Israel had built for Ashtoreth the vile goddess of the Sidonians, for Chemosh the vile god of Moab, and for Molek the detestable^(AE) god of the people of Ammon.^{(AF) 14} Josiah smashed^(AG) the sacred stones and cut down the Asherah poles and covered the sites with human bones.^(AH)

¹⁵ Even the altar^(AI) at Bethel, the high place made by Jeroboam^(AJ) son of Nebat, who had caused Israel to sin—even that altar and high place he demolished. He burned the high place and ground it to powder, and burned the Asherah pole also. ¹⁶ Then Josiah^(AK) looked around, and when he saw the tombs that were there on the hillside, he had the bones removed from them and burned on the altar to defile it, in accordance^(AL) with the word of the Lord proclaimed by the man of God who foretold these things.

¹⁷ The king asked, “What is that tombstone I see?”

The people of the city said, “It marks the tomb of the man of God who came from Judah and pronounced against the altar of Bethel the very things you have done to it.”

¹⁸ “Leave it alone,” he said. “Don’t let anyone disturb his bones^(AM).” So they spared his bones and those of the prophet^(AN) who had come from Samaria.

¹⁹ Just as he had done at Bethel, Josiah removed all the shrines at the high places that the kings of Israel had built in the towns of Samaria and that had aroused the Lord’s anger. ²⁰ Josiah slaughtered^(AO) all the priests of those high places on the altars and burned human bones^(AP) on them. Then he went back to Jerusalem.

²⁹ They will deal with you in hatred and take away everything you have worked for. They will leave you stark naked,^(A) and the shame of your prostitution will be exposed.^(B) Your lewdness^(C) and promiscuity^{(D) 30} have brought this on you, because you lusted after the nations and defiled yourself with their idols.^{(E) 31} You have gone the way of your sister; so I will put her cup^(F) into your hand.^(G)

³² “This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

I have spoken, declares the Sovereign Lord.^(L)

³⁵ “Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Since you have forgotten^(M) me and turned your back on me,^(N) you must bear^(O) the consequences of your lewdness and prostitution.”

³⁶ The Lord said to me: “Son of man, will you judge Oholah and Oholibah? Then confront^(P) them with their detestable practices,^{(Q) 37} for they have committed adultery and blood is on their hands. They committed adultery with their idols; they even sacrificed their children, whom they bore to me, as food for them.^{(R) 38} They have also done this to me: At that same time they defiled my sanctuary^(S) and desecrated my Sabbaths.^{(T) 39} On the very day they sacrificed their children to their idols, they entered my sanctuary and desecrated^(U) it. That is what they did in my house.^(V)

⁴⁰ “They even sent messengers for men who came from far away,^(W) and when they arrived you bathed yourself for them, applied eye makeup^(X) and put on your jewelry.^{(Y) 41} You sat on an elegant couch,^(Z) with a table^(AA) spread before it on which you had placed the incense^(AB) and olive oil that belonged to me.^(AC)

⁴² “The noise of a carefree^(AD) crowd was around her; drunkards^(AE) were brought from the desert along with men from the rabble, and they put bracelets^(AF) on the wrists of the woman and her sister and beautiful crowns on their heads.^{(AG) 43} Then I said about the one worn out by adultery, ‘Now let them use her as a prostitute,^(AH) for that is all she is.’ ⁴⁴ And they slept with her. As men sleep with a prostitute, so they slept with those lewd women, Oholah and Oholibah. ⁴⁵ But righteous judges will sentence them to the punishment of women who commit adultery and shed blood,^(AI) because they are adulterous and blood is on their hands.^(AJ)

⁴⁶ “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Bring a mob^(AK) against them and give them over to terror and plunder.^{(AL) 47} The mob will stone them and cut them down with their swords; they will kill their sons and daughters^(AM) and burn^(AN) down their houses.^(AO)

⁴⁸ “So I will put an end^(AP) to lewdness in the land, that all women may take warning and not imitate you.^{(AQ) 49} You will suffer the penalty for your lewdness and bear the consequences of your sins of idolatry.^(AR) Then you will know that I am the Sovereign Lord.^(AS)”

Do Not Worry^(A)

²² Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. ²³ For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. ²⁴ Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them.^(B) And how much more valuable you are than birds! ²⁵ Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life^[a]? ²⁶ Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?

²⁷ “Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor^(C) was dressed like one of these. ²⁸ If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith!^{(D) 29} And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. ³⁰ For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father^(E) knows that you need them.^{(F) 31} But seek his kingdom,^(G) and these things will be given to you as well.^(H)

³² “Do not be afraid,^(I) little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.^{(J) 33} Sell your possessions and give to the poor.^(K) Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven^(L) that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.^{(M) 34} For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.^(N)

Paul Called by God

¹¹ I want you to know, brothers and sisters,^(A) that the gospel I preached^(B) is not of human origin. ¹² I did not receive it from any man,^(C) nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation^(D) from Jesus Christ.^(E)

¹³ For you have heard of my previous way of life in Judaism,^(F) how intensely I persecuted the church of God^(G) and tried to destroy it.^{(H) 14} I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people and was extremely zealous^(I) for the traditions of my fathers.^{(J) 15} But when God, who set me apart from my mother’s womb^(K) and called me^(L) by his grace, was pleased ¹⁶ to reveal his Son in me so that I might preach him among the Gentiles,^(M) my immediate response was not to consult any human being.^{(N) 17} I did not go up to Jerusalem to see those who were apostles before I was, but I went into Arabia. Later I returned to Damascus.^(O)

¹⁸ Then after three years,^(P) I went up to Jerusalem^(Q) to get acquainted with Cephas^[a] and stayed with him fifteen days. ¹⁹ I saw none of the other apostles—only James,^(R) the Lord’s brother. ²⁰ I assure you before God^(S) that what I am writing you is no lie.^(T)

²¹ Then I went to Syria^(U) and Cilicia.^{(V) 22} I was personally unknown to the churches of Judea^(W) that are in Christ.^{(X) 23} They only heard the report: “The man who formerly persecuted us is now preaching the faith^(Y) he once tried to destroy.”^{(Z) 24} And they praised God^(AA) because of me.
