Recounting Israel's Journey

33 These are the stages of the people of Israel, when they went out of the land of Egypt by their companies under the leadership of Moses and Aaron. Moses wrote down their starting places, (A)stage by stage, by command of the Lord, and these are their stages according to their starting places. They (B)set out from Rameses in (C)the first month, on the fifteenth day of the first month. On the day after the Passover, the people of Israel went out (D)triumphantly in the sight of all the Egyptians, while the Egyptians were burying all their firstborn, (E)whom the Lord had struck down among them. (F)On their gods also the Lord executed judgments.

So the people of Israel set out from Rameses and camped at (G)Succoth. And they set out from Succoth and camped at (H)Etham, which is on the edge of the wilderness. And they set out from Etham and turned back to (I)Pi-hahiroth, which is east of Baal-zephon, and they camped before Migdol. And they set out from before Hahiroth[a] and (J)passed through the midst of the sea into the wilderness, and they (K)went a three days' journey in the wilderness of Etham and camped at Marah. And they set out from Marah and came to (L)Elim; at Elim there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees, and they camped there. 10 And they set out from Elim and camped by the Red Sea. 11 And they set out from the Red Sea and camped in (M)the wilderness of Sin. 12 And they set out from the wilderness of Sin and camped at Dophkah. 13 And they set out from Dophkah and camped at Alush. 14 And they set out from Alush and camped at (N)Rephidim, where there was no water for the people to drink. 15 And they set out from Rephidim and camped in the (O)wilderness of Sinai. 16 And they set out from the wilderness of Sinai and camped at (P)Kibroth-hattaavah.

33 Here are the stages in the journey(A) of the Israelites when they came out of Egypt(B) by divisions under the leadership of Moses and Aaron.(C) At the Lord’s command Moses recorded(D) the stages in their journey(E). This is their journey by stages:

The Israelites set out(F) from Rameses(G) on the fifteenth day of the first month, the day after the Passover.(H) They marched out defiantly(I) in full view of all the Egyptians, who were burying all their firstborn,(J) whom the Lord had struck down among them; for the Lord had brought judgment(K) on their gods.(L)

They left Etham, turned back to Pi Hahiroth, to the east of Baal Zephon,(O) and camped near Migdol.(P)

They left Pi Hahiroth[a](Q) and passed through the sea(R) into the desert, and when they had traveled for three days in the Desert of Etham, they camped at Marah.(S)

They left Marah and went to Elim, where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and they camped(T) there.

Jehoshaphat lived at Jerusalem. And he went out again among the people, from Beersheba to (A)the hill country of Ephraim, and brought them back to the Lord, the God of their fathers. He appointed (B)judges in the land in all (C)the fortified cities of Judah, city by city, and said to the judges, “Consider what you do, (D)for you judge not for man but for the Lord. He is with you in giving judgment. Now then, let the fear of the Lord be upon you. Be careful what you do, for (E)there is no injustice with the Lord our God, (F)or partiality or taking bribes.”

Moreover, in Jerusalem Jehoshaphat (G)appointed certain Levites and priests and heads of families of Israel, (H)to give judgment for the Lord and to decide disputed cases. They had their seat at Jerusalem. And he charged them: (I)“Thus you shall do in the fear of the Lord, in faithfulness, (J)and with your whole heart: 10 (K)whenever a case comes to you from your brothers who live in their cities, concerning bloodshed, law or commandment, statutes or rules, then you shall warn them, that they may not incur guilt before the Lord and (L)wrath may not come upon you and your brothers. Thus you shall do, and you will not incur guilt. 11 And behold, Amariah the chief priest is over you (M)in all matters of the Lord; and Zebadiah the son of Ishmael, the governor of the house of Judah, in all the king's matters, and the Levites will serve you as officers. (N)Deal courageously, and may the Lord be with the upright!”[a]

Jehoshaphat Appoints Judges

Jehoshaphat lived in Jerusalem, and he went out again among the people from Beersheba to the hill country of Ephraim and turned them back to the Lord, the God of their ancestors. He appointed judges(A) in the land, in each of the fortified cities of Judah. He told them, “Consider carefully what you do,(B) because you are not judging for mere mortals(C) but for the Lord, who is with you whenever you give a verdict. Now let the fear of the Lord be on you. Judge carefully, for with the Lord our God there is no injustice(D) or partiality(E) or bribery.”

In Jerusalem also, Jehoshaphat appointed some of the Levites,(F) priests(G) and heads of Israelite families to administer(H) the law of the Lord and to settle disputes. And they lived in Jerusalem. He gave them these orders: “You must serve faithfully and wholeheartedly in the fear of the Lord. 10 In every case that comes before you from your people who live in the cities—whether bloodshed or other concerns of the law, commands, decrees or regulations—you are to warn them not to sin against the Lord;(I) otherwise his wrath will come on you and your people. Do this, and you will not sin.

11 “Amariah the chief priest will be over you in any matter concerning the Lord, and Zebadiah son of Ishmael, the leader of the tribe of Judah, will be over you in any matter concerning the king, and the Levites will serve as officials before you. Act with courage,(J) and may the Lord be with those who do well.”

The Lord Accuses Israel

(A)Hear the word of the Lord, O children of Israel,
    for (B)the Lord has a controversy with the inhabitants of the land.
There is no faithfulness or steadfast love,
    and (C)no knowledge of God in the land;
(D)there is swearing, lying, murder, stealing, and committing adultery;
    they break all bounds, and (E)bloodshed follows bloodshed.
Therefore (F)the land mourns,
    and all who dwell in it languish,
(G)and also the beasts of the field
    and the birds of the heavens,
    (H)and even the fish of the sea are taken away.

(I)Yet let no one contend,
    and let none accuse,
    for with you is (J)my contention, O priest.[a]
You shall stumble by day;
    the prophet also shall stumble with you by night;
    and I will destroy (K)your mother.
My people are destroyed (L)for lack of knowledge;
    (M)because you have rejected knowledge,
    I reject you (N)from being a priest to me.
And since you have forgotten the law of your God,
    (O)I also will forget your children.

(P)The more they increased,
    the more they sinned against me;
    (Q)I will change their glory into shame.
(R)They feed on the sin[b] of my people;
    they are greedy for their iniquity.
(S)And it shall be like people, like priest;
    I will punish them for their ways
    and repay them for their deeds.
10 (T)They shall eat, but not be satisfied;
    they shall play the whore, but not multiply,
because they have forsaken the Lord
    to cherish 11 whoredom, wine, and new wine,
    which (U)take away the understanding.
12 My people (V)inquire of a piece of wood,
    and their walking staff gives them oracles.
For (W)a spirit of whoredom has led them astray,
    and they have left their God to play the whore.
13 (X)They sacrifice on the tops of the mountains
    and burn offerings on the hills,
(Y)under oak, poplar, and terebinth,
    because their shade is good.
Therefore your daughters play the whore,
    and your brides commit adultery.
14 I will not punish your daughters when they play the whore,
    nor your brides when they commit adultery;
for (Z)the men themselves go aside with prostitutes
    and sacrifice with (AA)cult prostitutes,
and a people (AB)without understanding shall come to ruin.

15 Though you play the whore, O (AC)Israel,
    let not (AD)Judah become guilty.
(AE)Enter not into (AF)Gilgal,
    nor go up to (AG)Beth-aven,
    and swear not, “As the Lord lives.”
16 Like a stubborn heifer,
    Israel is stubborn;
can the Lord now feed them
    like a lamb in a broad pasture?

17 (AH)Ephraim is joined to idols;
    (AI)leave him alone.
18 When their drink is gone, they give themselves to whoring;
    (AJ)their rulers[c] dearly love shame.
19 (AK)A wind has wrapped them[d] in its wings,
    and they shall (AL)be ashamed because of their sacrifices.

The Charge Against Israel

Hear the word of the Lord, you Israelites,
    because the Lord has a charge(A) to bring
    against you who live in the land:(B)
“There is no faithfulness,(C) no love,
    no acknowledgment(D) of God in the land.(E)
There is only cursing,[a] lying(F) and murder,(G)
    stealing(H) and adultery;(I)
they break all bounds,
    and bloodshed follows bloodshed.(J)
Because of this the land dries up,(K)
    and all who live in it waste away;(L)
the beasts of the field, the birds in the sky
    and the fish in the sea are swept away.(M)

“But let no one bring a charge,
    let no one accuse another,
for your people are like those
    who bring charges against a priest.(N)
You stumble(O) day and night,
    and the prophets stumble with you.
So I will destroy your mother(P)
    my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.(Q)

“Because you have rejected knowledge,
    I also reject you as my priests;
because you have ignored the law(R) of your God,
    I also will ignore your children.
The more priests there were,
    the more they sinned against me;
    they exchanged their glorious God[b](S) for something disgraceful.(T)
They feed on the sins of my people
    and relish their wickedness.(U)
And it will be: Like people, like priests.(V)
    I will punish both of them for their ways
    and repay them for their deeds.(W)

10 “They will eat but not have enough;(X)
    they will engage in prostitution(Y) but not flourish,
because they have deserted(Z) the Lord
    to give themselves 11 to prostitution;(AA)
old wine(AB) and new wine
    take away their understanding.(AC)
12 My people consult a wooden idol,(AD)
    and a diviner’s rod speaks to them.(AE)
A spirit of prostitution(AF) leads them astray;(AG)
    they are unfaithful(AH) to their God.
13 They sacrifice on the mountaintops
    and burn offerings on the hills,
under oak,(AI) poplar and terebinth,
    where the shade is pleasant.(AJ)
Therefore your daughters turn to prostitution(AK)
    and your daughters-in-law to adultery.(AL)

14 “I will not punish your daughters
    when they turn to prostitution,
nor your daughters-in-law
    when they commit adultery,
because the men themselves consort with harlots(AM)
    and sacrifice with shrine prostitutes(AN)
    a people without understanding(AO) will come to ruin!(AP)

15 “Though you, Israel, commit adultery,
    do not let Judah become guilty.

“Do not go to Gilgal;(AQ)
    do not go up to Beth Aven.[c](AR)
    And do not swear, ‘As surely as the Lord lives!’(AS)
16 The Israelites are stubborn,(AT)
    like a stubborn heifer.(AU)
How then can the Lord pasture them
    like lambs(AV) in a meadow?
17 Ephraim is joined to idols;
    leave him alone!
18 Even when their drinks are gone,
    they continue their prostitution;
    their rulers dearly love shameful ways.
19 A whirlwind(AW) will sweep them away,
    and their sacrifices will bring them shame.(AX)

The Authority of the Son

19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, (A)the Son (B)can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father[a] does, that the Son does likewise. 20 For (C)the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And (D)greater works than these will he show him, so that (E)you may marvel. 21 For as the Father (F)raises the dead and (G)gives them life, so (H)also the Son gives life (I)to whom he will. 22 (J)For the Father judges no one, but (K)has given all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son, just as they (L)honor the Father. (M)Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, (N)whoever hears my word and (O)believes him who sent me has eternal life. He (P)does not come into judgment, but (Q)has passed from death to life.

25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, (R)an hour is coming, and is now here, when (S)the dead will hear (T)the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear (U)will live. 26 (V)For as the Father has life in himself, (W)so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27 And he (X)has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this, for (Y)an hour is coming when (Z)all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, (AA)those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these,(C) so that you will be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life,(D) even so the Son gives life(E) to whom he is pleased to give it. 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,(F) 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. The Full Assurance of Faith

19 (A)Therefore, brothers,[a] since we have confidence to enter (B)the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20 by (C)the new and living way that he opened for us through (D)the curtain, that is, through his flesh, 21 and since we have (E)a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts (F)sprinkled clean (G)from an evil conscience and our bodies (H)washed with pure water. 23 (I)Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for (J)he who promised is faithful. 24 And (K)let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 (L)not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and (M)all the more as you see (N)the Day drawing near.

26 For (O)if we go on sinning deliberately (P)after receiving the knowledge of the truth, (Q)there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 (R)but a fearful expectation of judgment, and (S)a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. 28 (T)Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy (U)on the evidence of two or three witnesses. 29 How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one (V)who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned (W)the blood of the covenant (X)by which he was sanctified, and has (Y)outraged the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him who said, (Z)“Vengeance is mine; I will repay.” And again, (AA)“The Lord will judge his people.” 31 (AB)It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
