31 And the people of Gad and the people of Reuben answered, “What the Lord has said to your servants, we will do. 32 We will pass over armed before the Lord into the land of Canaan, and the possession of our inheritance shall remain with us beyond the Jordan.”
33 And (A)Moses gave to them, to the people of Gad and to the people of Reuben and to the half-tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land and its cities with their territories, the cities of the land throughout the country. 34 And the people of Gad built (B)Dibon, (C)Ataroth, (D)Aroer, 35 Atroth-shophan, (E)Jazer, Jogbehah, 36 (F)Beth-nimrah and Beth-haran, (G)fortified cities, and folds for sheep. 37 And the people of Reuben built (H)Heshbon, (I)Elealeh, Kiriathaim, 38 (J)Nebo, and (K)Baal-meon ((L)their names were changed), and (M)Sibmah. And they gave other names to the cities that they built. 39 And the sons of (N)Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead and captured it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were in it. 40 And Moses (O)gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh, and he settled in it. 41 And (P)Jair the son of Manasseh went and captured their villages, and called them Havvoth-jair.[a] 42 And Nobah went and captured Kenath and its villages, and called it Nobah, after his own name.

39 The descendants of Makir(S) son of Manasseh went to Gilead,(T) captured it and drove out the Amorites(U) who were there. 40 So Moses gave Gilead to the Makirites,(V) the descendants of Manasseh, and they settled there. 41 Jair,(W) a descendant of Manasseh, captured their settlements and called them Havvoth Jair.[a](X) 42 And Nobah captured Kenath(Y) and its surrounding settlements and called it Nobah(Z) after himself.(AA)

The Defeat and Death of Ahab
28 So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah went up to Ramoth-gilead. 29 And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “I will disguise myself and go into battle, but you wear your robes.” And the king of Israel disguised himself, and they went into battle. 30 Now the king of Syria had commanded the captains of his chariots, “Fight with neither small nor great, but only with the king of Israel.” 31 As soon as the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat, they said, “It is the king of Israel.” So they turned to fight against him. And Jehoshaphat cried out, and the Lord helped him; God drew them away from him. 32 For as soon as the captains of the chariots saw that it was not the king of Israel, they turned back from pursuing him. 33 But a certain man drew his bow at random[a] and struck the king of Israel between the scale armor and the breastplate. Therefore he said to the driver of his chariot, “Turn around and carry me out of the battle, for I am wounded.” 34 And the battle continued that day, and the king of Israel was propped up in his chariot facing the Syrians until evening. Then at sunset he died.
Jehoshaphat's Reforms
19 Jehoshaphat the king of Judah returned in safety to his house in Jerusalem. 2 But (A)Jehu the son of (B)Hanani (C)the seer went out to meet him and said to King Jehoshaphat, “Should you (D)help the wicked and love those who hate the Lord? Because of this, (E)wrath has gone out against you from the Lord. 3 Nevertheless, (F)some good is found in you, for (G)you destroyed the Asheroth out of the land, and have (H)set your heart to seek God.”

Ahab Killed at Ramoth Gilead(A)
28 So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah went up to Ramoth Gilead. 29 The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “I will enter the battle in disguise, but you wear your royal robes.” So the king of Israel disguised(B) himself and went into battle.
30 Now the king of Aram had ordered his chariot commanders, “Do not fight with anyone, small or great, except the king of Israel.” 31 When the chariot commanders saw Jehoshaphat, they thought, “This is the king of Israel.” So they turned to attack him, but Jehoshaphat cried out,(C) and the Lord helped him. God drew them away from him, 32 for when the chariot commanders saw that he was not the king of Israel, they stopped pursuing him.
33 But someone drew his bow at random and hit the king of Israel between the breastplate and the scale armor. The king told the chariot driver, “Wheel around and get me out of the fighting. I’ve been wounded.” 34 All day long the battle raged, and the king of Israel propped himself up in his chariot facing the Arameans until evening. Then at sunset he died.(D)
19 When Jehoshaphat king of Judah returned safely to his palace in Jerusalem, 2 Jehu(E) the seer, the son of Hanani, went out to meet him and said to the king, “Should you help the wicked(F) and love[a] those who hate the Lord?(G) Because of this, the wrath(H) of the Lord is on you. 3 There is, however, some good(I) in you, for you have rid the land of the Asherah poles(J) and have set your heart on seeking God.(K)”

I will make them a forest,

when she burned offerings to them
and (G)adorned herself with her ring and jewelry,
and went after her lovers
and forgot me, declares the Lord.
The Lord's Mercy on Israel
14 “Therefore, behold, I will allure her,
and (H)bring her into the wilderness,
and (I)speak tenderly to her.
15 And there I will give her her vineyards
and make the Valley of Achor[a] a door of hope.
And there she shall answer (J)as in the days of her youth,
as at the time when she came out of the land of Egypt.
16 “And (K)in that day, declares the Lord, you will call me ‘My Husband,’ and no longer will you call me ‘My Baal.’ 17 For (L)I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth, and they shall be remembered by name no more. 18 And (M)I will make for them a covenant on that day with the beasts of the field, the birds of the heavens, and the creeping things of the ground. And (N)I will abolish[b] the bow, the sword, and war from the land, and I will make you lie down in (O)safety. 19 And I will betroth you to me (P)forever. (Q)I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love and in mercy. 20 (R)I will betroth you to me in faithfulness. And (S)you shall know the Lord.
21 “And (T)in that day (U)I will answer, declares the Lord,
I will answer the heavens,
and they shall answer the earth,
22 and the earth shall answer the grain, the wine, and the oil,
and they shall answer (V)Jezreel,[c]
23 and (W)I will sow her for myself in the land.
And (X)I (Y)will have mercy on No Mercy,[d]
and (Z)I will say to Not My People,[e] (AA)‘You are my people’;
and he shall say, ‘You are my God.’”
Hosea Redeems His Wife
3 And the Lord said to me, (AB)“Go again, love a woman who is loved by another man and is an adulteress, even as the Lord loves the children of Israel, though they turn to other gods and love cakes of raisins.” 2 So I bought her for fifteen shekels of silver and a (AC)homer and a lethech[f] of barley. 3 And I said to her, “You must (AD)dwell as mine for many days. You shall not play the whore, or belong to another man; so will I also be to you.” 4 For the children of Israel (AE)shall dwell many days (AF)without king or prince, (AG)without sacrifice or (AH)pillar, without (AI)ephod or (AJ)household gods. 5 Afterward (AK)the children of Israel shall return and (AL)seek the Lord their God, and (AM)David their king, (AN)and they shall come in fear to the Lord and to his goodness in the (AO)latter days.

and they will respond to the earth;
22 and the earth will respond to the grain,
the new wine and the olive oil,(AC)

Hosea’s Reconciliation With His Wife
3 The Lord said to me, “Go, show your love to your wife again, though she is loved by another man and is an adulteress.(AI) Love her as the Lord loves the Israelites, though they turn to other gods and love the sacred raisin cakes.(AJ)”
2 So I bought her for fifteen shekels[j] of silver and about a homer and a lethek[k] of barley. 3 Then I told her, “You are to live with me many days; you must not be a prostitute or be intimate with any man, and I will behave the same way toward you.”
4 For the Israelites will live many days without king or prince,(AK) without sacrifice(AL) or sacred stones,(AM) without ephod(AN) or household gods.(AO) 5 Afterward the Israelites will return and seek(AP) the Lord their God and David their king.(AQ) They will come trembling(AR) to the Lord and to his blessings in the last days.(AS)

(B)Now that day was the Sabbath. 10 So the Jews[a] said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and (C)it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.” 11 But he answered them, “The man who healed me, that man said to me, ‘Take up your bed, and walk.’” 12 They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” 13 Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for (D)Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place. 14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well! Jesus Is Equal with God
18 This was why the Jews (I)were seeking all the more to kill him, (J)because not only was he (K)breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God (L)his own Father, (M)making himself equal with God.

The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,(A) 10 and so the Jewish leaders(B) said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”(C)
11 But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’ ”
12 So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?”
13 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.
14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning(D) or something worse may happen to you.” 15 The man went away and told the Jewish leaders(E) that it was Jesus who had made him well.
The Authority of the Son
16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. 17 In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father(F) is always at his work(G) to this very day, and I too am working.” 18 For this reason they tried all the more to kill him;(H) not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.(I)

15 And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying,

after those days, declares the Lord:
I will put my laws on their hearts,
and write them on their minds,”
17 then he adds,
(L)“I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”
18 Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.
