⁴⁰ The persons were 16,000, of which the Lord's tribute was 32 persons. ⁴¹ And Moses gave the tribute, which was the contribution for the Lord, to Eleazar the priest, ^(A)as the Lord commanded Moses.

⁴² From the people of Israel's half, which Moses separated from that of the men who had served in the army— ⁴³ now the congregation's half was 337,500 sheep, ⁴⁴ 36,000 cattle, ⁴⁵ and 30,500 donkeys, ⁴⁶ and 16,000 persons— ^47 (B)from the people of Israel's half Moses took one of every 50, both of persons and of beasts, and gave them to the Levites who kept guard over the tabernacle of the Lord, as the Lord commanded Moses.

⁴⁸ Then ^(C)the officers who were over the thousands of the army, the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds, came near to Moses ⁴⁹ and said to Moses, “Your servants have counted the men of war who are under our command, and there is not a man missing from us. ⁵⁰ And we have brought the Lord's offering, what each man found, articles of gold, armlets and bracelets, signet rings, earrings, and beads, ^(D)to make atonement for ourselves before the Lord.” ⁵¹ And Moses and Eleazar the priest received from them the gold, all crafted articles. ⁵² And all the gold of the contribution that they presented to the Lord, from the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds, was 16,750 shekels.^{[a] 53 (E)}(The men in the army had each taken plunder for himself.) ⁵⁴ And Moses and Eleazar the priest received the gold from the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the tent of meeting, ^(F)as a memorial for the people of Israel before the Lord.

Asa's Last Years

16 ^(A)In the ^(B)thirty-sixth year of the reign of Asa, Baasha king of Israel went up against Judah and built Ramah, ^(C)that he might permit no one to go out or come in to Asa king of Judah. ² Then Asa took silver and gold from the treasures of the house of the Lord and the king's house and sent them to Ben-hadad king of Syria, who lived in Damascus, saying, ³ “There is a covenant^[a] between me and you, as there was between my father and your father. Behold, I am sending to you silver and gold. Go, break your covenant with Baasha king of Israel, that he may withdraw from me.” ⁴ And Ben-hadad listened to King Asa and sent the commanders of his armies against the cities of Israel, and they conquered Ijon, Dan, Abel-maim, and all the ^(D)store cities of Naphtali. ⁵ And when Baasha heard of it, he stopped building Ramah and let his work cease. ⁶ Then King Asa took all Judah, and they carried away the stones of Ramah and its timber, with which Baasha had been building, and with them he built Geba and Mizpah.

⁷ At that time ^(E)Hanani ^(F)the seer came to Asa king of Judah and said to him, ^(G)“Because you relied on the king of Syria, and did not rely on the Lord your God, the army of the king of Syria has escaped you. ⁸ Were not ^(H)the Ethiopians and ^(I)the Libyans a huge army with very many chariots and horsemen? Yet ^(J)because you relied on the Lord, he gave them into your hand. ^9 (K)For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those ^(L)whose heart is blameless^[b] toward him. ^(M)You have done foolishly in this, for from now on ^(N)you will have wars.” ¹⁰ Then Asa was angry with the seer and put him ^(O)in the stocks in prison, for he was in a rage with him because of this. And Asa inflicted cruelties upon some of the people at the same time.

^11 (P)The acts of Asa, from first to last, are written in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel. ¹² In the thirty-ninth year of his reign Asa was diseased in his feet, and his disease became severe. Yet even in his disease he did not seek the Lord, but sought help from physicians. ¹³ And Asa slept with his fathers, dying in the forty-first year of his reign. ¹⁴ They buried him in the tomb that he had cut for himself in the city of David. They laid him on a bier ^(Q)that had been filled with various kinds of spices prepared by the perfumer's art, ^(R)and they made a very great fire in his honor.

^40 (A)“At the time of the end, the king of the south shall attack^[a] him, but the king of the north shall rush upon him ^(B)like a whirlwind, with chariots and horsemen, and with many ships. And he shall come into countries and ^(C)shall overflow and pass through. ⁴¹ He shall come into ^(D)the glorious land. And tens of thousands shall fall, but these shall be delivered out of his hand: ^(E)Edom and ^(F)Moab and the main part of the ^(G)Ammonites. ⁴² He shall stretch out his hand against the countries, and the land of Egypt shall not escape. ⁴³ He shall become ruler of the treasures of gold and of silver, and all the precious things of Egypt, and the ^(H)Libyans and the ^(I)Cushites shall follow in his train. ⁴⁴ But news from the east and the north shall alarm him, and he shall go out with great fury to destroy and devote many to destruction. ⁴⁵ And he shall pitch his palatial tents between the sea and the glorious holy mountain. Yet he shall come to his end, with none to help him.

The Time of the End

12 “At that time shall arise ^(J)Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people. And ^(K)there shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time. But at that time your people shall be delivered, ^(L)everyone whose name shall be found written in the book. ² And many of those who ^(M)sleep in ^(N)the dust of the earth shall ^(O)awake, ^(P)some to everlasting life, and ^(Q)some to shame and everlasting contempt. ^3 (R)And those who are wise ^(S)shall shine like the brightness of the sky above;^[b] and ^(T)those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever. ⁴ But you, Daniel, ^(U)shut up the words and ^(V)seal the book, until ^(W)the time of the end. ^(X)Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.”

⁵ Then I, Daniel, looked, and behold, two others stood, one on ^(Y)this bank of the stream and one on that bank of the stream. ⁶ And someone said to ^(Z)the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the stream,^{[c] (AA)}“How long shall it be till the end of these wonders?” ⁷ And I heard ^(AB)the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the stream; ^(AC)he raised his right hand and his left hand toward heaven and ^(AD)swore by him who lives forever that it would be for a ^(AE)time, times, and half a time, and that when the shattering of ^(AF)the power of ^(AG)the holy people comes to an end all these things would be finished. ⁸ I heard, ^(AH)but I did not understand. Then I said, “O my lord, what shall be the outcome of these things?” ⁹ He said, ^(AI)“Go your way, Daniel, ^(AJ)for the words are shut up and sealed until the time of the end. ^10 (AK)Many shall purify themselves and make themselves white and be refined, but ^(AL)the wicked shall act wickedly. And none of the wicked shall understand, ^(AM)but those who are wise shall understand. ¹¹ And from the time that ^(AN)the regular burnt offering is taken away and ^(AO)the abomination that makes desolate is set up, there shall be 1,290 days. ^12 (AP)Blessed is he who waits and arrives at the 1,335 days. ^13 (AQ)But go your way till the end. ^(AR)And you shall rest and shall stand in your allotted place at ^(AS)the end of the days.”
