The Queen of Sheba

(A)Now when (B)the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon, she came to Jerusalem to test him with hard questions, having a very great retinue and camels bearing spices and very much gold and precious stones. And when she came to Solomon, she told him all that was on her mind. And Solomon answered all her questions. There was nothing hidden from Solomon that he could not explain to her. And when (C)the queen of Sheba had seen the wisdom of Solomon, the house that he had built, the food of his table, the seating of his officials, and the attendance of his servants, and their clothing, his cupbearers, and their clothing, and his burnt offerings that he offered at the house of the Lord, there was no more breath in her.

And she said to the king, “The report was true that I heard in my own land of your words and of your wisdom, but I did not believe the[a] reports until I came and my own eyes had seen it. And behold, half the greatness of your wisdom was not told me; you surpass the report that I heard. Happy are your wives![b] Happy are these your servants, who continually stand before you and hear your wisdom! Blessed be the Lord your God, who has delighted in you (D)and set you on his throne as king for the Lord your God! (E)Because your God loved Israel and would establish them forever, he has made you king over them, that you may execute justice and righteousness.” Then she gave the king 120 talents[c] of gold, and a very great quantity of spices, and precious stones. There were no spices such as those that the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon.

10 Moreover, the servants of Hiram and the servants of Solomon, (F)who brought gold from Ophir, brought algum wood and precious stones. 11 And the king made from the algum wood (G)supports for the house of the Lord and for the king's house, lyres also and harps for the singers. There never was seen the like of them before in the land of Judah.

12 And King Solomon gave to the queen of Sheba all that she desired, whatever she asked (H)besides what she had brought to the king. So she turned and went back to her own land with her servants.

The Queen of Sheba Visits Solomon(A)

When the queen of Sheba(B) heard of Solomon’s fame, she came to Jerusalem to test him with hard questions. Arriving with a very great caravan—with camels carrying spices, large quantities of gold, and precious stones—she came to Solomon and talked with him about all she had on her mind. Solomon answered all her questions; nothing was too hard for him to explain to her. When the queen of Sheba saw the wisdom of Solomon,(C) as well as the palace he had built, the food on his table, the seating of his officials, the attending servants in their robes, the cupbearers in their robes and the burnt offerings he made at[a] the temple of the Lord, she was overwhelmed.

She said to the king, “The report I heard in my own country about your achievements and your wisdom is true. But I did not believe what they said until I came(D) and saw with my own eyes. Indeed, not even half the greatness of your wisdom was told me; you have far exceeded the report I heard. How happy your people must be! How happy your officials, who continually stand before you and hear your wisdom! Praise be to the Lord your God, who has delighted in you and placed you on his throne(E) as king to rule for the Lord your God. Because of the love of your God for Israel and his desire to uphold them forever, he has made you king(F) over them, to maintain justice and righteousness.”

Then she gave the king 120 talents[b] of gold,(G) large quantities of spices, and precious stones. There had never been such spices as those the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon.

10 (The servants of Hiram and the servants of Solomon brought gold from Ophir;(H) they also brought algumwood[c] and precious stones. 11 The king used the algumwood to make steps for the temple of the Lord and for the royal palace, and to make harps and lyres for the musicians. Nothing like them had ever been seen in Judah.)

12 King Solomon gave the queen of Sheba all she desired and asked for; he gave her more than she had brought to him. Then she left and returned with her retinue to her own country.

Daniel's Vision Interpreted

15 “As for me, Daniel, my spirit within me[a] was anxious, and (A)the visions of my head alarmed me. 16 I approached one of those who stood there and asked him the truth concerning all this. So he told me and made known to me the interpretation of the things. 17 (B)‘These four great beasts are four kings who shall arise out of the earth. 18 But (C)the saints of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever, forever and ever.’

19 “Then I desired to know the truth about (D)the fourth beast, which was different from all the rest, exceedingly terrifying, with its teeth of iron and claws of bronze, and which devoured and broke in pieces and stamped what was left with its feet, 20 (E)and about the ten horns that were on its head, and the other horn that came up and before which three of them fell, the horn that had eyes and a mouth that spoke great things, and that seemed greater than its companions. 21 As I looked, this horn (F)made war with the saints and prevailed over them, 22 until the (G)Ancient of Days came, and (H)judgment was given for the saints of the Most High, and the time came when (I)the saints possessed the kingdom.

23 “Thus he said: ‘As for (J)the fourth beast,

there shall be a fourth kingdom on earth,
    which shall be different from all the kingdoms,
and it shall devour the whole earth,
    and trample it down, and break it to pieces.
24 As for the ten horns,
out of this kingdom ten kings shall arise,
    and another shall arise after them;
he shall be different from the former ones,
    and shall put down three kings.
25 (K)He shall speak words against the Most High,
    and shall wear out the saints of the Most High,
    and shall think to (L)change the times and the law;
and they shall be given into his hand
    for (M)a time, times, and half a time.
26 (N)But the court shall sit in judgment,
    and (O)his dominion shall be taken away,
    to be consumed and destroyed (P)to the end.
27 (Q)And the kingdom and the dominion
    and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven
    shall be given to the people of (R)the saints of the Most High;
(S)his kingdom shall be an everlasting kingdom,
    and all dominions shall serve and obey him.’[b]

28 “Here is the end of the matter. (T)As for me, Daniel, my (U)thoughts greatly alarmed me, (V)and my color changed, but (W)I kept the matter in my heart.”

The Interpretation of the Dream

15 “I, Daniel, was troubled in spirit, and the visions that passed through my mind disturbed me.(A) 16 I approached one of those standing there and asked him the meaning of all this.

“So he told me and gave me the interpretation(B) of these things: 17 ‘The four great beasts are four kings that will rise from the earth. 18 But the holy people(C) of the Most High will receive the kingdom(D) and will possess it forever—yes, for ever and ever.’(E)

19 “Then I wanted to know the meaning of the fourth beast, which was different from all the others and most terrifying, with its iron teeth and bronze claws—the beast that crushed and devoured its victims and trampled underfoot whatever was left. 20 I also wanted to know about the ten horns(F) on its head and about the other horn that came up, before which three of them fell—the horn that looked more imposing than the others and that had eyes and a mouth that spoke boastfully.(G) 21 As I watched, this horn was waging war against the holy people and defeating them,(H) 22 until the Ancient of Days came and pronounced judgment in favor of the holy people of the Most High, and the time came when they possessed the kingdom.(I)

23 “He gave me this explanation: ‘The fourth beast is a fourth kingdom that will appear on earth. It will be different from all the other kingdoms and will devour the whole earth, trampling it down and crushing it.(J) 24 The ten horns(K) are ten kings who will come from this kingdom. After them another king will arise, different from the earlier ones; he will subdue three kings. 25 He will speak against the Most High(L) and oppress his holy people(M) and try to change the set times(N) and the laws. The holy people will be delivered into his hands for a time, times and half a time.[a](O)

26 “‘But the court will sit, and his power will be taken away and completely destroyed(P) forever. 27 Then the sovereignty, power and greatness of all the kingdoms(Q) under heaven will be handed over to the holy people(R) of the Most High.(S) His kingdom will be an everlasting(T) kingdom, and all rulers will worship(U) and obey him.’

28 “This is the end of the matter. I, Daniel, was deeply troubled(V) by my thoughts,(W) and my face turned pale,(X) but I kept the matter to myself.”

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

13 (A)The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus (B)went up to Jerusalem. 14 (C)In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there. 15 And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. 16 And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make (D)my Father's house a house of trade.” 17 His disciples remembered that it was written, (E)“Zeal for your house will consume me.”

18 So the Jews said to him, (F)“What sign do you show us for doing these things?” 19 Jesus answered them, (G)“Destroy this temple, and in three days (H)I will raise it up.” 20 The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple,[a] and will you raise it up in three days?” 21 But he was speaking about (I)the temple of his body. 22 When therefore he was raised from the dead, (J)his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed (K)the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

Jesus Knows What Is in Man

23 Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name (L)when they saw the signs that he was doing. 24 But Jesus (M)on his part did not entrust himself to them, because (N)he knew all people 25 and needed no one to bear witness about man, for (O)he himself knew what was in man.

Jesus Clears the Temple Courts(A)

13 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover,(B) Jesus went up to Jerusalem.(C) 14 In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves,(D) and others sitting at tables exchanging money.(E) 15 So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. 16 To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house(F) into a market!” 17 His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.”[a](G)

18 The Jews(H) then responded to him, “What sign(I) can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?”(J)

19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”(K)

20 They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” 21 But the temple he had spoken of was his body.(L) 22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said.(M) Then they believed the scripture(N) and the words that Jesus had spoken.

23 Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival,(O) many people saw the signs(P) he was performing and believed(Q) in his name.[b] 24 But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people. 25 He did not need any testimony about mankind,(R) for he knew what was in each person.(S)

Jesus the Great High Priest

14 Since then we have (A)a great high priest (B)who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, (C)let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest (D)who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been (E)tempted as we are, (F)yet without sin. 16 (G)Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

For every high priest chosen from among men (H)is appointed to act on behalf of men (I)in relation to God, (J)to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. (K)He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself (L)is beset with weakness. Because of this he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins (M)just as he does for those of the people. And (N)no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, (O)just as Aaron was.

So also Christ (P)did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him,

(Q)“You are my Son,
    today I have begotten you”;

as he says also in another place,

(R)“You are a priest forever,
    after the order of Melchizedek.”

In the days of his flesh, (S)Jesus[a] offered up prayers and supplications, (T)with loud cries and tears, to him (U)who was able to save him from death, and (V)he was heard because of his reverence. Although (W)he was a son, (X)he learned obedience through what he suffered. And (Y)being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, 10 being designated by God a high priest (Z)after the order of Melchizedek.

Jesus the Great High Priest

14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest(A) who has ascended into heaven,[a](B) Jesus the Son of God,(C) let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.(D) 15 For we do not have a high priest(E) who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are(F)—yet he did not sin.(G) 16 Let us then approach(H) God’s throne of grace with confidence,(I) so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Every high priest is selected from among the people and is appointed to represent the people in matters related to God,(J) to offer gifts and sacrifices(K) for sins.(L) He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray,(M) since he himself is subject to weakness.(N) This is why he has to offer sacrifices for his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people.(O) And no one takes this honor on himself, but he receives it when called by God, just as Aaron was.(P)

In the same way, Christ did not take on himself the glory(Q) of becoming a high priest.(R) But God said(S) to him,

“You are my Son;
    today I have become your Father.”[b](T)
