The Ark Brought to the Temple

Then Solomon assembled the elders of Israel and all the heads of the tribes, the leaders of the fathers' houses of the people of Israel, in Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the covenant of the Lord out of (A)the city of David, which is Zion. And all the men of Israel assembled before the king at the feast that is in the seventh month. And all the elders of Israel came, (B)and the Levites took up the ark. And they brought up the ark, the tent of meeting, and all the holy vessels that were in the tent; (C)the Levitical priests brought them up. And King Solomon and all the congregation of Israel, who had assembled before him, were before the ark, sacrificing so many sheep and oxen that they could not be counted or numbered. Then the priests brought the ark of the covenant of the Lord to its place, in the inner sanctuary of the house, in the Most Holy Place, underneath the wings of the cherubim. The cherubim spread out their wings over the place of the ark, so that the cherubim made a covering above the ark and its poles. And the poles were so long that the ends of the poles were seen (D)from the Holy Place before the inner sanctuary, but they could not be seen from outside. And they are[a] there to this day. 10 There was nothing in the ark except the two tablets (E)that Moses put there at Horeb, where the Lord made a covenant with the people of Israel, when they came out of Egypt. 11 And when the priests came out of the Holy Place (for all the priests who were present had consecrated themselves, without regard to (F)their divisions, 12 and all the Levitical (G)singers, (H)Asaph, (I)Heman, and Jeduthun, their sons and kinsmen, arrayed in fine linen, with (J)cymbals, harps, and lyres, stood east of the altar with 120 (K)priests who were trumpeters; 13 and it was the duty of the trumpeters and singers to make themselves heard in unison in praise and thanksgiving to the Lord), and when the song was raised, (L)with trumpets and cymbals and other musical instruments, in praise to the Lord,

(M)“For he is good,
    for his steadfast love endures forever,”

the house, the house of the Lord, was filled with a cloud, 14 so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, (N)for the glory of the Lord filled the house of God.

Solomon Blesses the People

(O)Then Solomon said, “The Lord has said that he would dwell in thick darkness. But I have built you (P)an exalted house, a place for you to dwell in forever.” Then the king turned around and blessed all the assembly of Israel, while all the assembly of Israel stood. And he said, “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who with his hand has fulfilled what he promised with his mouth to David my father, saying, ‘Since the day that I brought my people out of the land of Egypt, I chose no city out of all the tribes of Israel in which to build a house, that my name might be there, and I chose no man as prince over my people Israel; (Q)but I have chosen Jerusalem that my name may be there, (R)and I have chosen David to be over my people Israel.’ (S)Now it was in the heart of David my father to build a house for the name of the Lord, the God of Israel. But the Lord said to David my father, ‘Whereas (T)it was in your heart to build a house for my name, you did well that it was in your heart. Nevertheless, it is not you who shall build the house, but your son who shall be born to you shall build the house for my name.’ 10 Now the Lord has fulfilled his promise that he made. For I have risen in the place of David my father and sit on the throne of Israel, as the Lord promised, and I have built the house for the name of the Lord, the God of Israel. 11 And there I have set the ark, (U)in which is the covenant of the Lord that he made with the people of Israel.”

The Ark Brought to the Temple(A)

Then Solomon summoned to Jerusalem the elders of Israel, all the heads of the tribes and the chiefs of the Israelite families, to bring up the ark(B) of the Lord’s covenant from Zion, the City of David. And all the Israelites(C) came together to the king at the time of the festival in the seventh month.

When all the elders of Israel had arrived, the Levites took up the ark, and they brought up the ark and the tent of meeting and all the sacred furnishings in it. The Levitical priests(D) carried them up; and King Solomon and the entire assembly of Israel that had gathered about him were before the ark, sacrificing so many sheep and cattle that they could not be recorded or counted.

The priests then brought the ark(E) of the Lord’s covenant to its place in the inner sanctuary of the temple, the Most Holy Place, and put it beneath the wings of the cherubim. The cherubim(F) spread their wings over the place of the ark and covered the ark and its carrying poles. These poles were so long that their ends, extending from the ark, could be seen from in front of the inner sanctuary, but not from outside the Holy Place; and they are still there today. 10 There was nothing in the ark except(G) the two tablets(H) that Moses had placed in it at Horeb, where the Lord made a covenant with the Israelites after they came out of Egypt.

11 The priests then withdrew from the Holy Place. All the priests who were there had consecrated themselves, regardless of their divisions.(I) 12 All the Levites who were musicians(J)—Asaph, Heman, Jeduthun and their sons and relatives—stood on the east side of the altar, dressed in fine linen and playing cymbals, harps and lyres. They were accompanied by 120 priests sounding trumpets.(K) 13 The trumpeters and musicians joined in unison to give praise and thanks to the Lord. Accompanied by trumpets, cymbals and other instruments, the singers raised their voices in praise to the Lord and sang:

“He is good;
    his love endures forever.”(L)

Then the temple of the Lord was filled with the cloud,(M) 14 and the priests could not perform(N) their service because of the cloud,(O) for the glory(P) of the Lord filled the temple of God.

Then Solomon said, “The Lord has said that he would dwell in a dark cloud;(Q) I have built a magnificent temple for you, a place for you to dwell forever.(R)

While the whole assembly of Israel was standing there, the king turned around and blessed them. Then he said:

“Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, who with his hands has fulfilled what he promised with his mouth to my father David. For he said, ‘Since the day I brought my people out of Egypt, I have not chosen a city in any tribe of Israel to have a temple built so that my Name might be there, nor have I chosen anyone to be ruler over my people Israel. But now I have chosen Jerusalem(S) for my Name(T) to be there, and I have chosen David(U) to rule my people Israel.’

“My father David had it in his heart(V) to build a temple for the Name of the Lord, the God of Israel. But the Lord said to my father David, ‘You did well to have it in your heart to build a temple for my Name. Nevertheless, you are not the one to build the temple, but your son, your own flesh and blood—he is the one who will build the temple for my Name.’

10 “The Lord has kept the promise he made. I have succeeded David my father and now I sit on the throne of Israel, just as the Lord promised, and I have built the temple for the Name of the Lord, the God of Israel. 11 There I have placed the ark, in which is the covenant(W) of the Lord that he made with the people of Israel.”

Daniel Interprets the Handwriting

13 Then Daniel was brought in before the king. The king answered and said to Daniel, “You are that Daniel, one of (A)the exiles of Judah, whom the king my father brought from Judah. 14 I have heard of you that (B)the spirit of the gods[a] is in you, and that (C)light and understanding and excellent wisdom are found in you. 15 Now (D)the wise men, the (E)enchanters, have been brought in before me to read this writing and make known to me its interpretation, but (F)they could not show the interpretation of the matter. 16 (G)But I have heard that you can give interpretations and (H)solve problems. (I)Now if you can read the writing and make known to me its interpretation, (J)you shall be clothed with purple and have a chain of gold around your neck and (K)shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.”

17 Then Daniel answered and said before the king, (L)“Let your gifts be for yourself, and give your rewards to another. Nevertheless, I will read the writing to the king and make known to him the interpretation. 18 O king, the (M)Most High God (N)gave (O)Nebuchadnezzar your father (P)kingship and greatness and glory and majesty. 19 And because of the greatness that he gave him, (Q)all peoples, nations, and languages (R)trembled and feared before him. Whom he would, he killed, and whom he would, he kept alive; whom he would, he raised up, and whom he would, he humbled. 20 But (S)when his heart was lifted up and his spirit was hardened so that he dealt proudly, (T)he was brought down from his kingly throne, and his glory was taken from him. 21 (U)He was driven from among the children of mankind, and his mind was made like that of a beast, and his dwelling was with the wild donkeys. He was fed grass like an ox, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, (V)until he knew that the (W)Most High God rules the kingdom of mankind and sets over it whom he will. 22 And you his son,[b] (X)Belshazzar, (Y)have not humbled your heart, though you knew all this, 23 but you have lifted up yourself against (Z)the Lord of heaven. And (AA)the vessels of his house have been brought in before you, and you and your lords, your wives, and your concubines have drunk wine from them. (AB)And you have praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which do not see or hear or know, (AC)but the God in whose hand is your breath, and (AD)whose are all your ways, (AE)you have not honored.

24 “Then from his presence (AF)the hand was sent, and this writing was inscribed. 25 And this is the writing that was inscribed: Mene, Mene, Tekel, and Parsin. 26 This is the interpretation of the matter: Mene, God has numbered[c] the days of your kingdom and brought it to an end; 27 Tekel, (AG)you have been weighed[d] in the balances and found wanting; 28 Peres, your kingdom is divided and given to (AH)the Medes and (AI)Persians.”[e]

29 Then (AJ)Belshazzar gave the command, and Daniel (AK)was clothed with purple, a chain of gold was put around his neck, and a proclamation was made about him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.

30 (AL)That very night (AM)Belshazzar the (AN)Chaldean king was killed. 31 [f] And (AO)Darius (AP)the Mede received the kingdom, being about sixty-two years old.

13 So Daniel was brought before the king, and the king said to him, “Are you Daniel, one of the exiles my father the king brought from Judah?(A) 14 I have heard that the spirit of the gods(B) is in you and that you have insight, intelligence and outstanding wisdom.(C) 15 The wise men and enchanters were brought before me to read this writing and tell me what it means, but they could not explain it.(D) 16 Now I have heard that you are able to give interpretations and to solve difficult problems.(E) If you can read this writing and tell me what it means, you will be clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed around your neck,(F) and you will be made the third highest ruler in the kingdom.”(G)

17 Then Daniel answered the king, “You may keep your gifts for yourself and give your rewards to someone else.(H) Nevertheless, I will read the writing for the king and tell him what it means.

18 “Your Majesty, the Most High God gave your father Nebuchadnezzar(I) sovereignty and greatness and glory and splendor.(J) 19 Because of the high position he gave him, all the nations and peoples of every language dreaded and feared him. 22 “But you, Belshazzar, his son,[a] have not humbled(S) yourself, though you knew all this. 23 Instead, you have set yourself up against(T) the Lord of heaven. You praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand.(V) But you did not honor the God who holds in his hand your life(W) and all your ways.(X) 24 Therefore he sent the hand that wrote the inscription.

26 “Here is what these words mean:

Mene[b]: God has numbered the days(Y) of your reign and brought it to an end.(Z)

27 Tekel[c]: You have been weighed on the scales(AA) and found wanting.(AB)

28 Peres[d]: Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes(AC) and Persians.”(AD)

29 Then at Belshazzar’s command, Daniel was clothed in purple, a gold chain was placed around his neck,(AE) and he was proclaimed the third highest ruler in the kingdom.(AF)

Practical Warnings

My son, if you have put up (A)security for your neighbor,
    have (B)given your pledge for a stranger,
if you are (C)snared in the words of your mouth,
    caught in the words of your mouth,
then do this, my son, and save yourself,
    for you have come into the hand of your neighbor:
    go, hasten,[a] and (D)plead urgently with your neighbor.
(E)Give your eyes no sleep
    and your eyelids no slumber;
save yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter,[b]
    (F)like a bird from the hand of the fowler.

Warnings Against Folly

My son,(A) if you have put up security(B) for your neighbor,(C)
    if you have shaken hands in pledge(D) for a stranger,
you have been trapped by what you said,
    ensnared by the words of your mouth.
So do this, my son, to free yourself,
    since you have fallen into your neighbor’s hands:
Go—to the point of exhaustion—[a]
    and give your neighbor no rest!
Allow no sleep to your eyes,
    no slumber to your eyelids.(E)
Free yourself, like a gazelle(F) from the hand of the hunter,(G)
    like a bird from the snare of the fowler.(H)

Go to the ant, you sluggard;(I)
    consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander,
    no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer(J)
    and gathers its food at harvest.(K)

The Founder of Salvation

For it was not to angels that God subjected the world (A)to come, of which we are speaking. It has been testified somewhere,

(B)“What is man, that you are mindful of him,
    or the son of man, that you care for him?
You made him for a little while lower than the angels;
    you have crowned him with glory and honor,[a]
    putting everything in subjection under his feet.”

Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, (C)we do not yet see everything in subjection to him. But we see him (D)who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, (E)crowned with glory and honor (F)because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might (G)taste death (H)for everyone.

10 For it (I)was fitting that he, (J)for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons (K)to glory, should make the (L)founder of their salvation (M)perfect through suffering. 11 For (N)he who sanctifies and (O)those who are sanctified (P)all have one source.[b] That is why he is not ashamed to call them (Q)brothers,[c] 12 saying,

(R)“I will tell of your name to my brothers;
    in the midst of the (S)congregation I will sing your praise.”

13 And again,

(T)“I will put my trust in him.”

And again,

(U)“Behold, I and the children (V)God has given me.”

14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise (W)partook of the same things, that (X)through death he might (Y)destroy (Z)the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who (AA)through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. 16 For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he (AB)helps the offspring of Abraham. 17 Therefore he had (AC)to be made like his brothers in every respect, (AD)so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest (AE)in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For because he himself has suffered (AF)when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

Jesus Made Fully Human

It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. But there is a place where someone(A) has testified:

“What is mankind that you are mindful of them,
    a son of man that you care for him?(B)
You made them a little[a] lower than the angels;
    you crowned them with glory and honor
    and put everything under their feet.”[b][c](C)

In putting everything under them,[d] God left nothing that is not subject to them.[e] Yet at present we do not see everything subject to them.[f] But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor(D) because he suffered death,(E) so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.(F)

10 In bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists,(G) should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what he suffered.(H) 11 Both the one who makes people holy(I) and those who are made holy(J) are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters.[g](K) 12 He says,

“I will declare your name to my brothers and sisters;
    in the assembly I will sing your praises.”[h](L)

13 And again,

“I will put my trust in him.”[i](M)

And again he says,

“Here am I, and the children God has given me.”[j](N)

14 Since the children have flesh and blood,(O) he too shared in their humanity(P) so that by his death he might break the power(Q) of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil(R) 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear(S) of death. 16 For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants.(T) 17 For this reason he had to be made like them,[k](U) fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful(V) and faithful high priest(W) in service to God,(X) and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.(Y) 18 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.(Z)
