Census of the New Generation

26 ^(A)After the plague, the Lord said to Moses and to Eleazar the son of Aaron, the priest, ²^(B)“Take a census of all the congregation of the people of Israel, from twenty years old and upward, by their fathers' houses, all in Israel who are able to go to war.” ³And Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them ^(C)in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying, ⁴“Take a census of the people,^[a] from twenty years old and upward,” as the Lord ^(D)commanded Moses. The people of Israel who came out of the land of Egypt were:

⁵^(E)Reuben, the firstborn of Israel; the sons of Reuben: of Hanoch, the clan of the Hanochites; of Pallu, the clan of the Palluites; ⁶of Hezron, the clan of the Hezronites; of Carmi, the clan of the Carmites. ⁷These are the clans of the Reubenites, and those listed were ^(F)43,730. ⁸And the sons of Pallu: Eliab. ⁹The sons of Eliab: Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. These are the Dathan and Abiram, ^(G)chosen from the congregation, who contended against Moses and Aaron in the company of Korah, when they contended against the Lord ¹⁰and ^(H)the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up together with Korah, when that company died, when the fire devoured 250 men, and ^(I)they became a warning. ¹¹But ^(J)the sons of Korah did not die.

¹²The sons of ^(K)Simeon according to their clans: of Nemuel, the clan of the Nemuelites; of Jamin, the clan of the Jaminites; of Jachin, the clan of the Jachinites; ¹³of Zerah, the clan of the Zerahites; of Shaul, the clan of the Shaulites. ¹⁴These are the clans of the Simeonites, ^(L)22,200.

These were the Israelites who came out of Egypt:^(F)

⁵The descendants of Reuben,^(G) the firstborn son of Israel, were:

through Hanok,^(H) the Hanokite clan;

through Pallu,^(I) the Palluite clan;

⁶through Hezron,^(J) the Hezronite clan;

through Karmi,^(K) the Karmite clan.

⁷These were the clans of Reuben; those numbered were 43,730.

⁸The son of Pallu was Eliab, ⁹and the sons of Eliab^(L) were Nemuel, Dathan and Abiram. The same Dathan and Abiram were the community^(M) officials who rebelled against Moses and Aaron and were among Korah’s followers when they rebelled against the Lord.^(N) ¹⁰The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them^(O) along with Korah, whose followers died when the fire devoured the 250 men.^(P) And they served as a warning sign.^(Q) ¹¹The line of Korah,^(R) however, did not die out.^(S)

Solomon Builds the Temple

3 ^(A)Then Solomon began to build the house of the Lord in Jerusalem ^(B)on Mount Moriah, where the Lord^[a] had appeared to David his father, at the place that David had appointed, ^(C)on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. ²He began to build in the second month of the fourth year of his reign. ³These are Solomon's ^(D)measurements^[b] for building the house of God: ^(E)the length, in cubits^[c] of the old standard, was sixty cubits, and the breadth twenty cubits. ⁴The vestibule in front of the nave of the house was twenty cubits long, equal to the width of the house,^[d] and its height was 120 cubits. He overlaid it on the inside with pure gold. ⁵^(F)The nave he lined with cypress and covered it with fine gold ^(G)and made palms and chains on it. ⁶He adorned the house with settings of precious stones. The gold was gold of Parvaim. ⁷So he lined the house with gold—its beams, its thresholds, its walls, and its doors—^(H)and he carved cherubim on the walls.

⁸^(I)And he made the Most Holy Place. Its length, corresponding to the breadth of the house, was twenty cubits, and its breadth was twenty cubits. He overlaid it with 600 talents^[e] of fine gold. ⁹The weight of gold for the nails was fifty shekels.^[f] And he overlaid ^(J)the upper chambers with gold.

¹⁰^(K)In the Most Holy Place he made two cherubim of wood^[g] and overlaid^[h] them with gold. ¹¹The wings of the cherubim together extended twenty cubits: one wing of the one, of five cubits, touched the wall of the house, and its other wing, of five cubits, touched the wing of the other cherub; ¹²and of this cherub, one wing, of five cubits, touched the wall of the house, and the other wing, also of five cubits, was joined to the wing of the first cherub. ¹³The wings of these cherubim extended twenty cubits. The cherubim^[i] stood on their feet, ^(L)facing the nave. ¹⁴^(M)And he made the veil of blue and purple and crimson fabrics and fine linen, and he worked cherubim on it.

¹⁵^(N)In front of the house he made two pillars thirty-five cubits high, with a capital of five cubits on the top of each. ¹⁶He made chains like a necklace^[j] and put them on the tops of the pillars, and he made a hundred pomegranates and put them on the chains. ¹⁷^(O)He set up the pillars in front of the temple, one on the south, the other on the north; that on the south he called Jachin, and that on the north Boaz.

Solomon Builds the Temple^(A)

3 Then Solomon began to build^(B) the temple of the Lord^(C) in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where the Lord had appeared to his father David. It was on the threshing floor of Araunah^[a]^(D) the Jebusite, the place provided by David. ²He began building on the second day of the second month in the fourth year of his reign.^(E)

³The foundation Solomon laid for building the temple of God was sixty cubits long and twenty cubits wide^[b]^(F) (using the cubit of the old standard). ⁴The portico at the front of the temple was twenty cubits^[c] long across the width of the building and twenty^[d] cubits high.

He overlaid the inside with pure gold. ⁵He paneled the main hall with juniper and covered it with fine gold and decorated it with palm tree^(G) and chain designs. ⁶He adorned the temple with precious stones. And the gold he used was gold of Parvaim. ⁷He overlaid the ceiling beams, doorframes, walls and doors of the temple with gold, and he carved cherubim^(H) on the walls.

⁸He built the Most Holy Place,^(I) its length corresponding to the width of the temple—twenty cubits long and twenty cubits wide. He overlaid the inside with six hundred talents^[e] of fine gold. ⁹The gold nails^(J) weighed fifty shekels.^[f] He also overlaid the upper parts with gold.

¹⁰For the Most Holy Place he made a pair^(K) of sculptured cherubim and overlaid them with gold. ¹¹The total wingspan of the cherubim was twenty cubits. One wing of the first cherub was five cubits^[g] long and touched the temple wall, while its other wing, also five cubits long, touched the wing of the other cherub. ¹²Similarly one wing of the second cherub was five cubits long and touched the other temple wall, and its other wing, also five cubits long, touched the wing of the first cherub. ¹³The wings of these cherubim^(L) extended twenty cubits. They stood on their feet, facing the main hall.^[h]

¹⁴He made the curtain^(M) of blue, purple and crimson yarn and fine linen, with cherubim^(N) worked into it.

¹⁵For the front of the temple he made two pillars,^(O) which together were thirty-five cubits^[i] long, each with a capital^(P) five cubits high. ¹⁶He made interwoven chains^[j]^(Q) and put them on top of the pillars. He also made a hundred pomegranates^(R) and attached them to the chains. ¹⁷He erected the pillars in the front of the temple, one to the south and one to the north. The one to the south he named Jakin^[k] and the one to the north Boaz.^[l]

Nebuchadnezzar's Humiliation

²⁸All this came upon King Nebuchadnezzar. ²⁹At the end of twelve months he was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, ³⁰and the king answered and said, ^(A)“Is not this great Babylon, which I have built by ^(B)my mighty power as a royal residence and for ^(C)the glory of my majesty?” ³¹^(D)While the words were still in the king's mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, “O King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: The kingdom has departed from you, ³²^(E)and you shall be driven from among men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field. And you shall be made to eat grass like an ox, and seven periods of time shall pass over you, ^(F)until you know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will.” ³³Immediately the word was fulfilled against Nebuchadnezzar. ^(G)He was driven from among men and ate grass like an ox, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven till his hair grew as long as eagles' feathers, and his nails were like birds' claws.

Nebuchadnezzar Restored

³⁴^(H)At the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and ^(I)my reason returned to me, and I blessed the Most High, and praised and honored ^(J)him who lives forever,

^(K)for his dominion is an everlasting dominion,
    and ^(L)his kingdom endures from generation to generation;
³⁵^(M)all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing,
    and ^(N)he does according to his will among the host of heaven
    and among the inhabitants of the earth;
^(O)and none can stay his hand
    or ^(P)say to him, “What have you done?”

³⁶At the same time ^(Q)my reason returned to me, and for ^(R)the glory of my kingdom, ^(S)my majesty and splendor returned to me. ^(T)My counselors and ^(U)my lords sought me, and I was established in my kingdom, and still more greatness was ^(V)added to me. ³⁷Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, ^(W)praise and extol and honor the ^(X)King of heaven, ^(Y)for all his works are right and his ways are just; and ^(Z)those who walk in pride he is able to humble.

The Handwriting on the Wall

5 ^(AA)King Belshazzar ^(AB)made a great feast for a thousand of his ^(AC)lords and drank wine in front of the thousand.

²^(AD)Belshazzar, when he tasted the wine, commanded that ^(AE)the vessels of gold and of silver that Nebuchadnezzar his father^[a] had taken out of the temple in Jerusalem be brought, that the king and his lords, his wives, and his concubines might drink from them. ³Then they brought in ^(AF)the golden vessels that had been taken out of the temple, the house of God in Jerusalem, and the king and his lords, his wives, and his concubines drank from them. ⁴They drank wine and ^(AG)praised the ^(AH)gods of gold and silver, bronze, iron, wood, and stone.

The Dream Is Fulfilled

³³Immediately what had been said about Nebuchadnezzar was fulfilled. He was driven away from people and ate grass like the ox. His body was drenched^(F) with the dew of heaven until his hair grew like the feathers of an eagle and his nails like the claws of a bird.^(G)

³⁴At the end of that time, I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes toward heaven, and my sanity^(H) was restored. Then I praised the Most High; I honored and glorified him who lives forever.^(I)

His dominion is an eternal dominion;
    his kingdom^(J) endures from generation to generation.^(K)
³⁵All the peoples of the earth
    are regarded as nothing.^(L)
He does as he pleases^(M)
    with the powers of heaven
    and the peoples of the earth.
No one can hold back^(N) his hand^(O)
    or say to him: “What have you done?”^(P)

³⁶At the same time that my sanity was restored, my honor and splendor were returned to me for the glory of my kingdom.^(Q) My advisers and nobles sought me out, and I was restored to my throne and became even greater than before. ³⁷Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and exalt^(R) and glorify^(S) the King of heaven, because everything he does is right and all his ways are just.^(T) And those who walk in pride^(U) he is able to humble.^(V)

5 King Belshazzar^(W) gave a great banquet^(X) for a thousand of his nobles^(Y) and drank wine with them. ²While Belshazzar was drinking^(Z) his wine, he gave orders to bring in the gold and silver goblets^(AA) that Nebuchadnezzar his father^[a] had taken from the temple in Jerusalem, so that the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines^(AB) might drink from them.^(AC) ³So they brought in the gold goblets that had been taken from the temple of God in Jerusalem, and the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines drank from them. ⁴As they drank the wine, they praised the gods^(AD) of gold and silver, of bronze, iron, wood and stone.^(AE)

¹³And to which of the angels has he ever said,

⁸But about the Son he says,

“Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever;^(U)
    a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.
⁹You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;
    therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions^(V)

¹⁰He also says,

“In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth,
