Baal Worship at Peor

25 While Israel lived in (A)Shittim, (B)the people began to whore with the daughters of Moab. (C)These invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods. So Israel yoked himself to Baal of Peor. And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel. And the Lord said to Moses, (D)“Take all the chiefs of the people and (E)hang[a] them in the sun before the Lord, (F)that the fierce anger of the Lord may turn away from Israel.” And Moses said to (G)the judges of Israel, (H)“Each of you kill those of his men who have yoked themselves to Baal of Peor.”

And behold, one of the people of Israel came and brought a Midianite woman to his family, in the sight of Moses and in the sight of the whole congregation of the people of Israel, while they were (I)weeping in the entrance of the tent of meeting. (J)When Phinehas (K)the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose and left the congregation and took a spear in his hand and went after the man of Israel into the chamber and pierced both of them, the man of Israel and the woman through her belly. Thus the plague on the people of Israel was stopped. Nevertheless, (L)those who died by the plague were twenty-four thousand.

The Zeal of Phinehas

10 And the Lord said to Moses, 11 “Phinehas the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, has turned back my wrath from the people of Israel, in that he (M)was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I did not consume the people of Israel in (N)my jealousy. 12 Therefore say, (O)‘Behold, I give to him my covenant of peace, 13 and it shall be to him and to (P)his descendants after him the covenant of (Q)a perpetual priesthood, because he was jealous for his God and made atonement for the people of Israel.’”

14 The name of the slain man of Israel, who was killed with the Midianite woman, was Zimri the son of Salu, chief of a father's house belonging to the Simeonites. 15 And the name of the Midianite woman who was killed was Cozbi the daughter of (R)Zur, who was the tribal head of a father's house in Midian.

16 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 17 (S)“Harass the Midianites and strike them down, 18 for they have harassed you with their (T)wiles, with which they beguiled you in the matter of (U)Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the chief of Midian, their sister, who was killed on the day of the plague on account of Peor.”

Census of the New Generation

26 (V)After the plague, the Lord said to Moses and to Eleazar the son of Aaron, the priest, (W)“Take a census of all the congregation of the people of Israel, from twenty years old and upward, by their fathers' houses, all in Israel who are able to go to war.” And Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them (X)in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying, “Take a census of the people,[b] from twenty years old and upward,” as the Lord (Y)commanded Moses. Why should the name of our father be taken away from his clan because he had no son? (BX)Give to us a possession among our father's brothers.”

Moses (BY)brought their case before the Lord. And the Lord said to Moses, “The daughters of Zelophehad (BZ)are right. And it shall be for the people of Israel (CC)a statute and rule, as the Lord commanded Moses.’”

Joshua to Succeed Moses

12 The Lord said to Moses, “Go up into (CD)this mountain of Abarim and see the land that I have given to the people of Israel. 13 When you have seen it, you also (CE)shall be gathered to your people, as your brother Aaron was, 14 (CF)because you rebelled against my word in the wilderness of Zin when the congregation quarreled, failing (CG)to uphold me as holy at the waters before their eyes.” (These are (CH)the waters of Meribah of Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.) 15 Moses spoke to the Lord, saying, 16 “Let the Lord, (CI)the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation 17 who (CJ)shall go out before them and come in before them, who shall lead them out and bring them in, that the congregation of the Lord may not be (CK)as sheep that have no shepherd.” 18 So the Lord said to Moses, “Take (CL)Joshua the son of Nun, a man (CM)in whom is the Spirit, and (CN)lay your hand on him. 19 Make him stand before Eleazar the priest and all the congregation, and you shall (CO)commission him in their sight. 20 You shall invest him with some of your authority, (CP)that all the congregation of the people of Israel may obey. 21 And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him (CQ)by the judgment of the Urim before the Lord. At his word they shall go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he and all the people of Israel with him, the whole congregation.” 22 And Moses did as the Lord commanded him. He took Joshua and made him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole congregation, 23 and he laid his hands on him and (CR)commissioned him as the Lord directed through Moses.

Moab Seduces Israel

25 While Israel was staying in Shittim,(A) the men began to indulge in sexual immorality(B) with Moabite(C) women,(D) who invited them to the sacrifices(E) to their gods.(F) The people ate the sacrificial meal and bowed down before these gods. So Israel yoked themselves to(G) the Baal of Peor.(H) And the Lord’s anger burned against them.

The Lord said to Moses, “Take all the leaders(I) of these people, kill them and expose(J) them in broad daylight before the Lord,(K) so that the Lord’s fierce anger(L) may turn away from Israel.”

So Moses said to Israel’s judges, “Each of you must put to death(M) those of your people who have yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor.”(N)

Then an Israelite man brought into the camp a Midianite(O) woman right before the eyes of Moses and the whole assembly of Israel while they were weeping(P) at the entrance to the tent of meeting. When Phinehas(Q) son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, saw this, he left the assembly, took a spear(R) in his hand and followed the Israelite into the tent. He drove the spear into both of them, right through the Israelite man and into the woman’s stomach. Then the plague against the Israelites was stopped;(S) but those who died in the plague(T) numbered 24,000.(U)

10 The Lord said to Moses, 11 “Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites.(V) Since he was as zealous for my honor(W) among them as I am, I did not put an end to them in my zeal. 12 Therefore tell him I am making my covenant of peace(X) with him. 13 He and his descendants will have a covenant of a lasting priesthood,(Y) because he was zealous(Z) for the honor(AA) of his God and made atonement(AB) for the Israelites.”(AC)

14 The name of the Israelite who was killed with the Midianite woman(AD) was Zimri son of Salu, the leader of a Simeonite family.(AE) 15 And the name of the Midianite woman who was put to death was Kozbi(AF) daughter of Zur, a tribal chief of a Midianite family.(AG)

16 The Lord said to Moses,(AH) 17 “Treat the Midianites(AI) as enemies(AJ) and kill them.(AK) 18 They treated you as enemies when they deceived you in the Peor incident(AL) involving their sister Kozbi, the daughter of a Midianite leader, the woman who was killed when the plague came as a result of that incident.”

The Second Census

26 After the plague(AM) the Lord said to Moses and Eleazar son of Aaron, the priest, “Take a census(AN) of the whole Israelite community by families—all those twenty years old or more who are able to serve in the army(AO) of Israel.” So on the plains of Moab(AP) by the Jordan across from Jericho,(AQ) Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them and said, “Take a census of the men twenty years old or more, as the Lord commanded Moses.”

They came forward and stood before Moses,(ED) Eleazar the priest, the leaders(EE) and the whole assembly at the entrance to the tent of meeting(EF) and said, “Our father died in the wilderness.(EG) He was not among Korah’s followers, who banded together against the Lord,(EH) but he died for his own sin and left no sons.(EI) Why should our father’s name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father’s relatives.”

So Moses brought their case(EJ) before the Lord,(EK) and the Lord said to him, “What Zelophehad’s daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance(EL) among their father’s relatives and give their father’s inheritance to them.(EM)

“Say to the Israelites, ‘If a man dies and leaves no son, give his inheritance to his daughter. If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers. 10 If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father’s brothers. 11 If his father had no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan, that he may possess it. This is to have the force of law(EN) for the Israelites, as the Lord commanded Moses.’”

Joshua to Succeed Moses

12 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go up this mountain(EO) in the Abarim Range(EP) and see the land(EQ) I have given the Israelites.(ER) 13 After you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people,(ES) as your brother Aaron(ET) was, 14 for when the community rebelled at the waters in the Desert of Zin,(EU) both of you disobeyed my command to honor me as holy(EV) before their eyes.” (These were the waters of Meribah(EW) Kadesh, in the Desert of Zin.)

15 Moses said to the Lord, 16 “May the Lord, the God who gives breath to all living things,(EX) appoint someone over this community 17 to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the Lord’s people will not be like sheep without a shepherd.”(EY)

18 So the Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership,[f](EZ) and lay your hand on him.(FA) 19 Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him(FB) in their presence.(FC) 20 Give him some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him.(FD) 21 He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by inquiring(FE) of the Urim(FF) before the Lord. At his command he and the entire community of the Israelites will go out, and at his command they will come in.”

22 Moses did as the Lord commanded him. He took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole assembly. 23 Then he laid his hands on him and commissioned him,(FG) as the Lord instructed through Moses.
