The Sabbath-Breaker Put to Death

32 While the Israelites were in the wilderness,(A) a man was found gathering wood on the Sabbath day.(B) 33 Those who found him gathering wood brought him to Moses and Aaron and the whole assembly, 34 and they kept him in custody, because it was not clear what should be done to him.(C) 35 Then the Lord said to Moses, “The man must die.(D) The whole assembly must stone him outside the camp.(E) 36 So the assembly took him outside the camp and stoned him(F) to death,(G) as the Lord commanded Moses.(H)

Tassels on Garments

37 The Lord said to Moses, 38 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘Throughout the generations to come(I) you are to make tassels on the corners of your garments,(J) with a blue cord on each tassel. 39 You will have these tassels to look at and so you will remember(K) all the commands of the Lord, that you may obey them and not prostitute yourselves(L) by chasing after the lusts of your own hearts(M) and eyes. 40 Then you will remember to obey all my commands(N) and will be consecrated to your God.(O) 41 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt to be your God.(P) I am the Lord your God.(Q)’”

Korah, Dathan and Abiram

16 Korah(R) son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and certain Reubenites—Dathan and Abiram(S), sons of Eliab,(T) and On son of Peleth—became insolent[a] and rose up against Moses.(U) With them were 250 Israelite men, well-known community leaders who had been appointed members of the council.(V) They came as a group to oppose Moses and Aaron(W) and said to them, “You have gone too far! The whole community is holy,(X) every one of them, and the Lord is with them.(Y) Why then do you set yourselves above the Lord’s assembly?”(Z)

When Moses heard this, he fell facedown.(AA) Then he said to Korah and all his followers: “In the morning the Lord will show who belongs to him and who is holy,(AB) and he will have that person come near him.(AC) The man he chooses(AD) he will cause to come near him. You, Korah, and all your followers(AE) are to do this: Take censers(AF) and tomorrow put burning coals(AG) and incense(AH) in them before the Lord. The man the Lord chooses(AI) will be the one who is holy.(AJ) You Levites have gone too far!”

Moses also said to Korah, “Now listen, you Levites! Isn’t it enough(AK) for you that the God of Israel has separated you from the rest of the Israelite community and brought you near himself to do the work at the Lord’s tabernacle and to stand before the community and minister to them?(AL) 10 He has brought you and all your fellow Levites near himself, but now you are trying to get the priesthood too.(AM) 11 It is against the Lord that you and all your followers have banded together. Who is Aaron that you should grumble(AN) against him?(AO)

Psalm 35

Of David.

Contend,(A) Lord, with those who contend with me;
    fight(B) against those who fight against me.
Take up shield(C) and armor;
    arise(D) and come to my aid.(E)
Brandish spear(F) and javelin[a](G)
    against those who pursue me.
Say to me,
    “I am your salvation.(H)

May those who seek my life(I)
    be disgraced(J) and put to shame;(K)
may those who plot my ruin
    be turned back(L) in dismay.
May they be like chaff(M) before the wind,
    with the angel of the Lord(N) driving them away;
may their path be dark and slippery,
    with the angel of the Lord pursuing them.

Since they hid their net(O) for me without cause(P)
    and without cause dug a pit(Q) for me,
may ruin overtake them by surprise—(R)

    may they fall into the pit,(S) to their ruin.

  1. Psalm 35:3 Or and block the way

Jesus Arrested(A)

43 Just as he was speaking, Judas,(B) one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.

44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!”(C) and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts,(D) and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”(E) 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled.(F)

51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.
