26 And the Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, 27 “How long shall (A)this wicked congregation grumble against me? (B)I have heard the grumblings of the people of Israel, which they grumble against me. 28 Say to them, (C)‘As I live, declares the Lord, (D)what you have said in my hearing I will do to you: 29 (E)your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness, and (F)of all your number, listed in the census (G)from twenty years old and upward, who have grumbled against me, 30 not one shall come into the land where I (H)swore that I would make you dwell, (I)except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun. 31 (J)But your little ones, who you said would become a prey, I will bring in, and they shall know the land that (K)you have rejected. 32 But as for you, (L)your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness. 33 And your children (M)shall be shepherds in the wilderness (N)forty years and shall (O)suffer for your faithlessness, until the last of your dead bodies lies in the wilderness. 34 (P)According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, (Q)forty days, a year for each day, you shall bear your iniquity forty years, and you shall know my displeasure.’ 35 (R)I, the Lord, have spoken. Surely this will I do to all (S)this wicked congregation who are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall come to a full end, and there they shall die.”
36 (T)And the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the congregation grumble against him by bringing up a bad report about the land— 37 the men who brought up a bad report of the land—(U)died by plague before the Lord. 38 Of those men who went to spy out the land, (V)only Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive.
Israel Defeated in Battle
39 When Moses told these words to all the people of Israel, the people (W)mourned greatly. 40 And they rose early in the morning and went up to the heights of the hill country, saying, (X)“Here we are. We will go up to the place that the Lord has promised, for we have sinned.” 41 (Y)But Moses said, “Why now are you transgressing the command of the Lord, when that will not succeed? 42 (Z)Do not go up, (AA)for the Lord is not among you, lest you be struck down before your enemies. 43 For there (AB)the Amalekites and the Canaanites are facing you, and you shall fall by the sword. Because you have turned back from following the Lord, the Lord will not be with you.” 44 (AC)But they presumed to go up to the heights of the hill country, although neither (AD)the ark of the covenant of the Lord nor Moses departed out of the camp. 45 Then (AE)the Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived in that hill country came down and defeated them and pursued them, even to (AF)Hormah.

I have heard the complaints of these grumbling Israelites.(A) 28 So tell them, ‘As surely as I live,(B) declares the Lord, I will do to you(C) the very thing I heard you say: 29 In this wilderness your bodies will fall(D)—every one of you twenty years old or more(E) who was counted in the census(F) and who has grumbled against me. 30 Not one of you will enter the land(G) I swore with uplifted hand(H) to make your home, except Caleb son of Jephunneh(I) and Joshua son of Nun.(J) 31 As for your children that you said would be taken as plunder, I will bring them in to enjoy the land you have rejected.(K) 32 But as for you, your bodies will fall(L) in this wilderness. 33 Your children will be shepherds here for forty years,(M) suffering for your unfaithfulness, until the last of your bodies lies in the wilderness. 34 For forty years(N)—one year for each of the forty days you explored the land(O)—you will suffer for your sins and know what it is like to have me against you.’ 35 I, the Lord, have spoken, and I will surely do these things(P) to this whole wicked community, which has banded together against me. They will meet their end in this wilderness; here they will die.(Q)”
36 So the men Moses had sent(R) to explore the land, who returned and made the whole community grumble(S) against him by spreading a bad report(T) about it— 37 these men who were responsible for spreading the bad report(U) about the land were struck down and died of a plague(V) before the Lord. 38 Of the men who went to explore the land,(W) only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh survived.(X)
39 When Moses reported this(Y) to all the Israelites, they mourned(Z) bitterly. 40 Early the next morning they set out for the highest point in the hill country,(AA) saying, “Now we are ready to go up to the land the Lord promised. Surely we have sinned!(AB)”
41 But Moses said, “Why are you disobeying the Lord’s command? This will not succeed!(AC) 42 Do not go up, because the Lord is not with you. You will be defeated by your enemies,(AD) 43 for the Amalekites(AE) and the Canaanites(AF) will face you there. Because you have turned away from the Lord, he will not be with you(AG) and you will fall by the sword.”
44 Nevertheless, in their presumption they went up(AH) toward the highest point in the hill country, though neither Moses nor the ark of the Lord’s covenant moved from the camp.(AI) 45 Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites(AJ) who lived in that hill country(AK) came down and attacked them and beat them down all the way to Hormah.(AL)

The Ark Brought to Jerusalem
15 David[a] built houses for himself in the city of David. And he prepared a place for the ark of God and (A)pitched a tent for it. 2 Then David said that no one but the Levites may carry (B)the ark of God, for the Lord had chosen them to carry the ark of the Lord and to minister to him forever. 3 (C)And David assembled all Israel at Jerusalem to bring up the ark of the Lord (D)to its place, which he had prepared for it. 4 And David gathered together the sons of Aaron and (E)the Levites: 5 of the sons of Kohath, Uriel the chief, with 120 of his brothers; 6 of the sons of Merari, Asaiah the chief, with 220 of his brothers; 7 of the sons of Gershom, Joel the chief, with 130 of his brothers; 8 of the sons of Elizaphan, Shemaiah the chief, with 200 of his brothers; 9 of the sons of Hebron, Eliel the chief, with 80 of his brothers; 10 of the sons of Uzziel, Amminadab the chief, with 112 of his brothers. 11 Then David summoned the priests (F)Zadok and (G)Abiathar, and the Levites Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel, and Amminadab, 12 and said to them, “You are the heads of the fathers' houses of the Levites. 16 David also commanded the chiefs of the Levites to appoint their brothers as the singers who should play loudly on (M)musical instruments, on harps and lyres and cymbals, to raise sounds of joy. 17 So the Levites appointed (N)Heman the son of Joel; and of his brothers (O)Asaph the son of Berechiah; and of the sons of Merari, their brothers, (P)Ethan the son of Kushaiah; 18 and with them their brothers of the second order, Zechariah, Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, and Mikneiah, and the gatekeepers Obed-edom and Jeiel. 19 The singers, Heman, Asaph, and Ethan, were to sound bronze cymbals; 20 Zechariah, (Q)Aziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah, and Benaiah were to play harps according to (R)Alamoth; 21 but Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, (S)Obed-edom, Jeiel, and Azaziah were to lead with lyres according to (T)the Sheminith. 22 Chenaniah, leader of the Levites in music, should direct the music, for he understood it. 23 Berechiah and Elkanah were to be gatekeepers for the ark. 24 Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah, and Eliezer, the priests, should (U)blow the trumpets before the ark of God. (V)Obed-edom and Jehiah were to be gatekeepers for the ark.
25 (W)So David and the elders of Israel and the commanders of thousands went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the Lord from the house of (X)Obed-edom with rejoicing. 26 And because God helped the Levites who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord, they sacrificed (Y)seven bulls and seven rams. 27 David was clothed with a robe of fine linen, as also were all the Levites who were carrying the ark, and the singers and Chenaniah the leader of the music of the singers. And David wore a linen ephod. 28 So all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the Lord with shouting, to the sound of the horn, (Z)trumpets, and cymbals, and made loud music on (AA)harps and lyres.
29 And as the ark of the covenant of the Lord came to the city of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David dancing and celebrating, and she despised him in her heart.

11 Then David summoned Zadok(L) and Abiathar(M) the priests, and Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel and Amminadab the Levites. 12 He said to them, “You are the heads of the Levitical families; you and your fellow Levites are to consecrate(N) yourselves and bring up the ark of the Lord, the God of Israel, to the place I have prepared for it. 13 It was because you, the Levites,(O) did not bring it up the first time that the Lord our God broke out in anger against us.(P) We did not inquire of him about how to do it in the prescribed way.(Q)” 14 So the priests and Levites consecrated themselves in order to bring up the ark of the Lord, the God of Israel. 15 And the Levites carried the ark of God with the poles on their shoulders, as Moses had commanded(R) in accordance with the word of the Lord.(S)
16 David(T) told the leaders of the Levites(U) to appoint their fellow Levites as musicians(V) to make a joyful sound with musical instruments: lyres, harps and cymbals.(W)
17 So the Levites appointed Heman(X) son of Joel; from his relatives, Asaph(Y) son of Berekiah; and from their relatives the Merarites,(Z) Ethan son of Kushaiah; 18 and with them their relatives next in rank: Zechariah,[b] Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-Edom(AA) and Jeiel,[c] the gatekeepers.
19 The musicians Heman,(AB) Asaph and Ethan were to sound the bronze cymbals; 20 Zechariah, Jaaziel,[d] Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah and Benaiah were to play the lyres according to alamoth,[e] 21 and Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-Edom, Jeiel and Azaziah were to play the harps, directing according to sheminith.[f] 22 Kenaniah the head Levite was in charge of the singing; that was his responsibility because he was skillful at it.
23 Berekiah and Elkanah were to be doorkeepers for the ark. 24 Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah and Eliezer the priests were to blow trumpets(AC) before the ark of God. Obed-Edom and Jehiah were also to be doorkeepers for the ark.
25 So David and the elders of Israel and the commanders of units of a thousand went to bring up the ark(AD) of the covenant of the Lord from the house of Obed-Edom, with rejoicing. 26 Because God had helped the Levites who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord, seven bulls and seven rams(AE) were sacrificed. 27 Now David was clothed in a robe of fine linen, as were all the Levites who were carrying the ark, and as were the musicians, and Kenaniah, who was in charge of the singing of the choirs. David also wore a linen ephod.(AF) 28 So all Israel(AG) brought up the ark of the covenant of the Lord with shouts,(AH) with the sounding of rams’ horns(AI) and trumpets, and of cymbals, and the playing of lyres and harps.
29 As the ark of the covenant of the Lord was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David dancing and celebrating, she despised him in her heart.

The Vestibule of the Temple
48 Then he brought me to (A)the vestibule of the temple and measured the (B)jambs of the vestibule, five cubits on either side. And the breadth of the gate was fourteen cubits, and the sidewalls of the gate[a] were three cubits on either side. 49 (C)The length of the vestibule was twenty cubits, and the breadth twelve[b] cubits, and people would go up to it by ten steps.[c] And there were pillars beside the jambs, one on either side.
The Inner Temple
41 Then he brought me to (D)the nave and measured the (E)jambs. On each side six cubits[d] was the breadth of the jambs.[e] 2 And the breadth of the entrance was ten cubits, and the sidewalls of the entrance were five cubits on either side. And he measured the length of the nave,[f] (F)forty cubits, and its breadth, (G)twenty cubits. 3 Then he went (H)into the inner room and measured the jambs of the entrance, two cubits; and the entrance, six cubits; and the sidewalls on either side[g] of the entrance, seven cubits. 4 And he measured (I)the length of the room, twenty cubits, and its breadth, twenty cubits, across (J)the nave. And he said to me, “This is (K)the Most Holy Place.”
5 Then he measured the wall of the temple, six cubits thick, and the breadth of (L)the side chambers, four cubits, (M)all around the temple. 6 And the side chambers were in three stories, one over another, (N)thirty in each story. There were offsets[h] all around the wall of the temple to serve as supports for the side chambers, (O)so that they should not be supported by the wall of the temple. 7 And it became broader as it wound upward to the side chambers, because the temple was enclosed upward all around the temple. Thus the temple had a broad area upward, and (P)so one went up from the lowest story to the top story through the middle story. 8 I saw also that the temple had a raised platform all around; the foundations of the side chambers measured a full reed of (Q)six long cubits. 9 The thickness of the outer wall of the side chambers was five cubits. (R)The free space between the side chambers of the temple and the 10 (S)other chambers was a breadth of (T)twenty cubits all around the temple on every side. 11 And the doors of the (U)side chambers opened on (V)the free space, one door toward the north, and another door toward the south. And the breadth of the free space was five cubits all around.
12 The building that was facing (W)the separate yard on the west side was seventy cubits broad, and the wall of the building was five cubits thick all around, and its length ninety cubits.

The New Temple
48 He brought me to the portico of the temple(A) and measured the jambs of the portico; they were five cubits wide on either side. The width of the entrance was fourteen cubits[a] and its projecting walls were[b] three cubits[c] wide on either side. 49 The portico(B) was twenty cubits[d] wide, and twelve[e] cubits[f] from front to back. It was reached by a flight of stairs,[g] and there were pillars(C) on each side of the jambs.
41 Then the man brought me to the main hall(D) and measured the jambs; the width of the jambs was six cubits[h] on each side.[i] 2 The entrance was ten cubits[j] wide, and the projecting walls on each side of it were five cubits[k] wide. He also measured the main hall; it was forty cubits long and twenty cubits wide.[l](E)
3 Then he went into the inner sanctuary and measured the jambs of the entrance; each was two cubits[m] wide. The entrance was six cubits wide, and the projecting walls on each side of it were seven cubits[n] wide. 4 And he measured the length of the inner sanctuary; it was twenty cubits, and its width was twenty cubits across the end of the main hall.(F) He said to me, “This is the Most Holy Place.(G)”
5 Then he measured the wall of the temple; it was six cubits thick, and each side room around the temple was four cubits[o] wide. 6 The side rooms were on three levels, one above another, thirty(H) on each level. There were ledges all around the wall of the temple to serve as supports for the side rooms, so that the supports were not inserted into the wall of the temple.(I) 7 The side rooms all around the temple were wider at each successive level. The structure surrounding the temple was built in ascending stages, so that the rooms widened as one went upward. A stairway(J) went up from the lowest floor to the top floor through the middle floor.
8 I saw that the temple had a raised base all around it, forming the foundation of the side rooms. It was the length of the rod, six long cubits. 9 The outer wall of the side rooms was five cubits thick. The open area between the side rooms of the temple 10 and the priests’ rooms was twenty cubits wide all around the temple. 11 There were entrances to the side rooms from the open area, one on the north and another on the south; and the base adjoining the open area was five cubits wide all around.
12 The building facing the temple courtyard on the west side was seventy cubits[p] wide. The wall of the building was five cubits thick all around, and its length was ninety cubits.[q]

4 (A)How shall we sing the Lord's song
in a foreign land?
5 If I forget you, O Jerusalem,

if I do not remember you,
if I do not set Jerusalem
above my highest joy!

2 I entreat Euodia and I entreat Syntyche to (A)agree in the Lord. 3 Yes, I ask you also, true companion,[a] help these women, who have labored[b] side by side with me in the gospel together with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, (B)whose names are in the book of life.
4 (C)Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. 5 Let your reasonableness[c] be known to everyone. (D)The Lord is at hand; 6 (E)do not be anxious about anything, (F)but in everything by prayer and supplication (G)with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And (H)the peace of God, (I)which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9 What you have learned[d] and (J)received and heard and seen (K)in me—practice these things, and (L)the God of peace will be with you.
