Moses Intercedes for the People

¹³ But ^(A)Moses said to the Lord, “Then the Egyptians will hear of it, for you brought up this people in your might from among them, ¹⁴ and they will tell the inhabitants of this land. ^(B)They have heard that you, O Lord, are in the midst of this people. For you, O Lord, are seen face to face, and ^(C)your cloud stands over them and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night. ¹⁵ Now if you kill this people as one man, then the nations who have heard your fame will say, ¹⁶ ‘It is because the Lord ^(D)was not able to bring this people into the land that he swore to give to them that he has killed them in the wilderness.’ ¹⁷ And now, please let the power of the Lord be great as you have promised, saying, ^18 (E)‘The Lord is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, ^(F)visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation.’ ¹⁹ Please ^(G)pardon the iniquity of this people, according to the greatness of your steadfast love, just ^(H)as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt until now.”

God Promises Judgment

²⁰ Then the Lord said, “I have pardoned, ^(I)according to your word. ²¹ But truly, as I live, and as all ^(J)the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord, ^22 (K)none of the men who have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have put me to the test these ^(L)ten times and have not obeyed my voice, ^23 (M)shall see the land that I swore to give to their fathers. And none of those who despised me shall see it. ²⁴ But my servant ^(N)Caleb, because he has a different spirit and has ^(O)followed me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went, and his descendants shall possess it. ^25 (P)Now, since the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwell in the valleys, ^(Q)turn tomorrow and set out for the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.”

David's Wives and Children

14 ^(A)And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, also masons and carpenters to build a house for him. ² And David knew that the Lord had established him as king over Israel, and that his kingdom was highly exalted for the sake of his people Israel.

³ And David took more wives in Jerusalem, and David fathered more sons and daughters. ^4 (B)These are the names of the children born to him in Jerusalem: ^(C)Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, ⁵ Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet, ⁶ Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, ⁷ Elishama, ^(D)Beeliada and ^(E)Eliphelet.

Philistines Defeated

⁸ When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up to search for David. But David heard of it and went out against them. ⁹ Now the Philistines had come and ^(F)made a raid in the ^(G)Valley of Rephaim. ¹⁰ And David inquired of God, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you give them into my hand?” And the Lord said to him, “Go up, and I will give them into your hand.” ¹¹ And he went up to Baal-perazim, and David struck them down there. And David said, “God has broken through^[a] my enemies by my hand, like a bursting flood.” Therefore the name of that place is called Baal-perazim. ¹² And they left their gods there, and David gave command, and they were burned.

¹³ And the Philistines yet again ^(H)made a raid in the valley. ¹⁴ And when David again inquired of God, ^(I)God said to him, “You shall not go up after them; go around and come against them opposite the balsam trees. ¹⁵ And when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then go out to battle, for God has gone out before you to strike down the army of the Philistines.” ¹⁶ And David did as God commanded him, and they struck down the Philistine army from Gibeon to Gezer. ¹⁷ And the fame of David went out into all lands, and the Lord brought the ^(J)fear of him upon all nations.

²⁹ Its ^(A)side rooms, its jambs, and its vestibule were of the same size as the others, and both it and its vestibule ^(B)had windows all around. ^(C)Its length was fifty cubits, and its breadth twenty-five cubits. ³⁰ And there were vestibules all around, twenty-five cubits long and five cubits broad. ³¹ Its vestibule faced the outer court, and ^(D)palm trees were on its jambs, and ^(E)its stairway had eight steps.

³² Then he brought me to the inner court on the east side, and ^(F)he measured the gate. It was of the same size as the others. ³³ Its side rooms, its jambs, and its vestibule were of the same size as the others, and both it and its vestibule had windows all around. Its length was fifty cubits, and its breadth twenty-five cubits. ^34 (G)Its vestibule faced the outer court, and it had palm trees on its jambs, on either side, and its stairway had eight steps.

³⁵ Then he brought me to ^(H)the north gate, and ^(I)he measured it. It had the same size as the others. ³⁶ Its side rooms, its jambs, and its vestibule were of the same size as the others,^[a] and it had windows all around. Its length was fifty cubits, and its breadth twenty-five cubits. ³⁷ Its vestibule^[b] faced the outer court, and it had palm trees on its jambs, on either side, and its stairway had eight steps.

³⁸ There was ^(J)a chamber with its door in the vestibule of the gate,^{[c] (K)}where the burnt offering was to be washed. ³⁹ And in the vestibule of the gate were two ^(L)tables on either side, on which the ^(M)burnt offering and the ^(N)sin offering and the ^(O)guilt offering were to be slaughtered. ⁴⁰ And off to the side, on the outside as one goes up to the entrance of the north gate, were two tables; and off to the other side of the vestibule of the gate were two tables. ^41 (P)Four tables were on either side of the gate, eight tables, ^(Q)on which to slaughter. ⁴² And there were four tables ^(R)of hewn stone for the burnt offering, a cubit and a half long, and a cubit and a half broad, and one cubit high, on which the instruments were to be laid with which the ^(S)burnt offerings and the sacrifices were slaughtered. ⁴³ And hooks,^[d] a handbreadth long, were fastened all around within. And on the tables the flesh of the offering was to be laid.

Chambers for the Priests

⁴⁴ On the outside of the inner gateway there were two ^(T)chambers^[e] in the ^(U)inner court, one^[f] at the side of the north gate facing south, the other at the side of the south^[g] gate facing north. ⁴⁵ And he said to me, “This chamber that faces south is for the priests ^(V)who have charge of the temple, ⁴⁶ and the chamber that faces north is for the priests ^(W)who have charge of the altar. These are ^(X)the sons of Zadok, who alone^[h] among the sons of Levi may come ^(Y)near to the Lord to minister to him.” ⁴⁷ And he measured the court, ^(Z)a hundred cubits long and ^(AA)a hundred cubits broad, a square. And ^(AB)the altar was in front of the temple.
