Reparto del trabajo de reedificación

3 Entonces se levantó el sumo sacerdote Eliasib con sus hermanos los sacerdotes, y edificaron la puerta de las Ovejas. Ellos arreglaron y levantaron sus puertas hasta la torre de Hamea, y edificaron hasta la torre de Hananeel. 2 Junto a ella edificaron los varones de Jericó, y luego edificó Zacur hijo de Imri.

3 Los hijos de Senaa edificaron la puerta del Pescado; ellos la enmaderaron, y levantaron sus puertas, con sus cerraduras y sus cerrojos. 4 Junto a ellos restauró Meremot hijo de Urías, hijo de Cos, y al lado de ellos restauró Mesulam hijo de Berequías, hijo de Mesezabeel. Junto a ellos restauró Sadoc hijo de Baana. 5 E inmediato a ellos restauraron los tecoítas; pero sus grandes no se prestaron para ayudar a la obra de su Señor. 6 La puerta Vieja fue restaurada por Joiada hijo de Paseah y Mesulam hijo de Besodías; ellos la enmaderaron, y levantaron sus puertas, con sus cerraduras y cerrojos. 7 Junto a ellos restauró Melatías gabaonita, y Jadón meronotita, varones de Gabaón y de Mizpa, que estaban bajo el dominio del gobernador del otro lado del río. 8 Junto a ellos restauró Uziel hijo de Harhaía, de los plateros; junto al cual restauró también Hananías, hijo de un perfumero. Así dejaron reparada a Jerusalén hasta el muro ancho. 9 Junto a ellos restauró también Refaías hijo de Hur, gobernador de la mitad de la región de Jerusalén. 10 Asimismo restauró junto a ellos, y frente a su casa, Jedaías hijo de Harumaf; y junto a él restauró Hatús hijo de Hasabnías. 11 Malquías hijo de Harim y Hasub hijo de Pahat-moab restauraron otro tramo, y la torre de los Hornos. 12 Junto a ellos restauró Salum hijo de Halohes, gobernador de la mitad de la región de Jerusalén, él con sus hijas.

13 La puerta del Valle la restauró Hanún con los moradores de Zanoa; ellos la reedificaron, y levantaron sus puertas, con sus cerraduras y sus cerrojos, y mil codos del muro, hasta la puerta del Muladar. 14 Reedificó la puerta del Muladar Malquías hijo de Recab, gobernador de la provincia de Bet-haquerem; él la reedificó, y levantó sus puertas, sus cerraduras y sus cerrojos. 15 Salum hijo de Colhoze, gobernador de la región de Mizpa, restauró la puerta de la Fuente; él la reedificó, la enmaderó y levantó sus puertas, sus cerraduras y sus cerrojos, y el muro del estanque de Siloé hacia el huerto del rey, y hasta las gradas que descienden de la ciudad de David. 16 Después de él restauró Nehemías hijo de Azbuc, gobernador de la mitad de la región de Bet-sur, hasta delante de los sepulcros de David, y hasta el estanque labrado, y hasta la casa de los Valientes. 17 Tras él restauraron los levitas; Rehum hijo de Bani, y junto a él restauró Hasabías, gobernador de la mitad de la región de Keila, por su región. 18 Después de él restauraron sus hermanos, Bavai hijo de Henadad, gobernador de la mitad de la región de Keila. 19 Junto a él restauró Ezer hijo de Jesúa, gobernador de Mizpa, otro tramo frente a la subida de la armería de la esquina. 20 Después de él Baruc hijo de Zabai con todo fervor restauró otro tramo, desde la esquina hasta la puerta de la casa de Eliasib sumo sacerdote. 21 Tras él restauró Meremot hijo de Urías hijo de Cos otro tramo, desde la entrada de la casa de Eliasib hasta el extremo de la casa de Eliasib. 22 Después de él restauraron los sacerdotes, los varones de la llanura. 23 Después de ellos restauraron Benjamín y Hasub, frente a su casa; y después de estos restauró Azarías hijo de Maasías, hijo de Ananías, cerca de su casa. 24 Después de él restauró Binúi hijo de Henadad otro tramo, desde la casa de Azarías hasta el ángulo entrante del muro, y hasta la esquina. 25 Palal hijo de Uzai, enfrente de la esquina y la torre alta que sale de la casa del rey, que está en el patio de la cárcel. Después de él, Pedaías hijo de Faros. 26 Y los sirvientes del templo que habitaban en Ofel restauraron hasta enfrente de la puerta de las Aguas al oriente, y la torre que sobresalía. 27 Después de ellos restauraron los tecoítas otro tramo, enfrente de la gran torre que sobresale, hasta el muro de Ofel.

28 Desde la puerta de los Caballos restauraron los sacerdotes, cada uno enfrente de su casa. 29 Después de ellos restauró Sadoc hijo de Imer, enfrente de su casa; y después de él restauró Semaías hijo de Secanías, guarda de la puerta Oriental. 30 Tras él, Hananías hijo de Selemías y Hanún hijo sexto de Salaf restauraron otro tramo. Después de ellos restauró Mesulam hijo de Berequías, enfrente de su cámara. 31 Después de él restauró Malquías hijo del platero, hasta la casa de los sirvientes del templo y de los comerciantes, enfrente de la puerta del Juicio, y hasta la sala de la esquina. 32 Y entre la sala de la esquina y la puerta de las Ovejas, restauraron los plateros y los comerciantes.

Precauciones contra los enemigos

4 Cuando oyó Sanbalat que nosotros edificábamos el muro, se enojó y se enfureció en gran manera, e hizo escarnio de los judíos. 2 Y habló delante de sus hermanos y del ejército de Samaria, y dijo: ¿Qué hacen estos débiles judíos? ¿Se les permitirá volver a ofrecer sus sacrificios? ¿Acabarán en un día? ¿Resucitarán de los montones del polvo las piedras que fueron quemadas? 3 Y estaba junto a él Tobías amonita, el cual dijo: Lo que ellos edifican del muro de piedra, si subiere una zorra lo derribará. 4 Oye, oh Dios nuestro, que somos objeto de su menosprecio, y vuelve el baldón de ellos sobre su cabeza, y entrégalos por despojo en la tierra de su cautiverio. 5 No cubras su iniquidad, ni su pecado sea borrado delante de ti, porque se airaron contra los que edificaban. 6 Edificamos, pues, el muro, y toda la muralla fue terminada hasta la mitad de su altura, porque el pueblo tuvo ánimo para trabajar.

7 Pero aconteció que oyendo Sanbalat y Tobías, y los árabes, los amonitas y los de Asdod, que los muros de Jerusalén eran reparados, porque ya los portillos comenzaban a ser cerrados, se encolerizaron mucho; 8 y conspiraron todos a una para venir a atacar a Jerusalén y hacerle daño. 9 Entonces oramos a nuestro Dios, y por causa de ellos pusimos guarda contra ellos de día y de noche. 10 Y dijo Judá: Las fuerzas de los acarreadores se han debilitado, y el escombro es mucho, y no podemos edificar el muro. 11 Y nuestros enemigos dijeron: No sepan, ni vean, hasta que entremos en medio de ellos y los matemos, y hagamos cesar la obra. 12 Pero sucedió que cuando venían los judíos que habitaban entre ellos, nos decían hasta diez veces: De todos los lugares de donde volviereis, ellos caerán sobre vosotros.

13 Entonces por las partes bajas del lugar, detrás del muro, y en los sitios abiertos, puse al pueblo por familias, con sus espadas, con sus lanzas y con sus arcos. 14 Después miré, y me levanté y dije a los nobles y a los oficiales, y al resto del pueblo: No temáis delante de ellos; acordaos del Señor, grande y temible, y pelead por vuestros hermanos, por vuestros hijos y por vuestras hijas, por vuestras mujeres y por vuestras casas. 15 Y cuando oyeron nuestros enemigos que lo habíamos entendido, y que Dios había desbaratado el consejo de ellos, nos volvimos todos al muro, cada uno a su tarea. 16 Desde aquel día la mitad de mis siervos trabajaba en la obra, y la otra mitad tenía lanzas, escudos, arcos y corazas; y detrás de ellos estaban los jefes de toda la casa de Judá. 17 Los que edificaban en el muro, los que acarreaban, y los que cargaban, con una mano trabajaban en la obra, y en la otra tenían la espada. 18 Porque los que edificaban, cada uno tenía su espada ceñida a sus lomos, y así edificaban; y el que tocaba la trompeta estaba junto a mí.

19 Y dije a los nobles, y a los oficiales y al resto del pueblo: La obra es grande y extensa, y nosotros estamos apartados en el muro, lejos unos de otros. 20 En el lugar donde oyereis el sonido de la trompeta, reuníos allí con nosotros; nuestro Dios peleará por nosotros. 21 Nosotros, pues, trabajábamos en la obra; y la mitad de ellos tenían lanzas desde la subida del alba hasta que salían las estrellas. 22 También dije entonces al pueblo: Cada uno con su criado permanezca dentro de Jerusalén, y de noche sirvan de centinela y de día en la obra. 23 Y ni yo ni mis hermanos, ni mis jóvenes, ni la gente de guardia que me seguía, nos quitamos nuestro vestido; cada uno se desnudaba solamente para bañarse.

Abolición de la usura

5 Entonces hubo gran clamor del pueblo y de sus mujeres contra sus hermanos judíos. 2 Había quien decía: Nosotros, nuestros hijos y nuestras hijas, somos muchos; por tanto, hemos pedido prestado grano para comer y vivir. 3 Y había quienes decían: Hemos empeñado nuestras tierras, nuestras viñas y nuestras casas, para comprar grano, a causa del hambre. 4 Y había quienes decían: Hemos tomado prestado dinero para el tributo del rey, sobre nuestras tierras y viñas. 5 Ahora bien, nuestra carne es como la carne de nuestros hermanos, nuestros hijos como sus hijos; y he aquí que nosotros dimos nuestros hijos y nuestras hijas a servidumbre, y algunas de nuestras hijas lo están ya, y no tenemos posibilidad de rescatarlas, porque nuestras tierras y nuestras viñas son de otros.

6 Y me enojé en gran manera cuando oí su clamor y estas palabras. 7 Entonces lo medité, y reprendí a los nobles y a los oficiales, y les dije: ¿Exigís interés cada uno a vuestros hermanos?(A) Y convoqué contra ellos una gran asamblea, 8 y les dije: Nosotros según nuestras posibilidades rescatamos a nuestros hermanos judíos que habían sido vendidos a las naciones; ¿y vosotros vendéis aun a vuestros hermanos, y serán vendidos a nosotros? Y callaron, pues no tuvieron qué responder. 9 Y dije: No es bueno lo que hacéis. ¿No andaréis en el temor de nuestro Dios, para no ser oprobio de las naciones enemigas nuestras? 10 También yo y mis hermanos y mis criados les hemos prestado dinero y grano; quitémosles ahora este gravamen. 11 Os ruego que les devolváis hoy sus tierras, sus viñas, sus olivares y sus casas, y la centésima parte del dinero, del grano, del vino y del aceite, que demandáis de ellos como interés. 12 Y dijeron: Lo devolveremos, y nada les demandaremos; haremos así como tú dices. Entonces convoqué a los sacerdotes, y les hice jurar que harían conforme a esto. 13 Además sacudí mi vestido, y dije: Así sacuda Dios de su casa y de su trabajo a todo hombre que no cumpliere esto, y así sea sacudido y vacío. Y respondió toda la congregación: ¡Amén! y alabaron a Jehová. Y el pueblo hizo conforme a esto.

14 También desde el día que me mandó el rey que fuese gobernador de ellos en la tierra de Judá, desde el año veinte del rey Artajerjes hasta el año treinta y dos, doce años, ni yo ni mis hermanos comimos el pan del gobernador. 15 Pero los primeros gobernadores que fueron antes de mí abrumaron al pueblo, y tomaron de ellos por el pan y por el vino más de cuarenta siclos de plata, y aun sus criados se enseñoreaban del pueblo; pero yo no hice así, a causa del temor de Dios. 16 También en la obra de este muro restauré mi parte, y no compramos heredad; y todos mis criados juntos estaban allí en la obra. 17 Además, ciento cincuenta judíos y oficiales, y los que venían de las naciones que había alrededor de nosotros, estaban a mi mesa. 18 Y lo que se preparaba para cada día era un buey y seis ovejas escogidas; también eran preparadas para mí aves, y cada diez días vino en toda abundancia; y con todo esto nunca requerí el pan del gobernador, porque la servidumbre de este pueblo era grave. 19 Acuérdate de mí para bien, Dios mío, y de todo lo que hice por este pueblo.

Maquinaciones de los adversarios

6 Cuando oyeron Sanbalat y Tobías y Gesem el árabe, y los demás de nuestros enemigos, que yo había edificado el muro, y que no quedaba en él portillo (aunque hasta aquel tiempo no había puesto las hojas en las puertas), 2 Sanbalat y Gesem enviaron a decirme: Ven y reunámonos en alguna de las aldeas en el campo de Ono. Mas ellos habían pensado hacerme mal. 3 Y les envié mensajeros, diciendo: Yo hago una gran obra, y no puedo ir; porque cesaría la obra, dejándola yo para ir a vosotros. 4 Y enviaron a mí con el mismo asunto hasta cuatro veces, y yo les respondí de la misma manera. 5 Entonces Sanbalat envió a mí su criado para decir lo mismo por quinta vez, con una carta abierta en su mano, 6 en la cual estaba escrito: Se ha oído entre las naciones, y Gasmu[a] lo dice, que tú y los judíos pensáis rebelaros; y que por eso edificas tú el muro, con la mira, según estas palabras, de ser tú su rey; 7 y que has puesto profetas que proclamen acerca de ti en Jerusalén, diciendo: ¡Hay rey en Judá! Y ahora serán oídas del rey las tales palabras; ven, por tanto, y consultemos juntos. 8 Entonces envié yo a decirle: No hay tal cosa como dices, sino que de tu corazón tú lo inventas. 9 Porque todos ellos nos amedrentaban, diciendo: Se debilitarán las manos de ellos en la obra, y no será terminada. Ahora, pues, oh Dios, fortalece tú mis manos. 10 Vine luego a casa de Semaías hijo de Delaía, hijo de Mehetabel, porque él estaba encerrado; el cual me dijo: Reunámonos en la casa de Dios, dentro del templo, y cerremos las puertas del templo, porque vienen para matarte; sí, esta noche vendrán a matarte. 11 Entonces dije: ¿Un hombre como yo ha de huir? ¿Y quién, que fuera como yo, entraría al templo para salvarse la vida? No entraré. 12 Y entendí que Dios no lo había enviado, sino que hablaba aquella profecía contra mí porque Tobías y Sanbalat lo habían sobornado. 13 Porque fue sobornado para hacerme temer así, y que pecase, y les sirviera de mal nombre con que fuera yo infamado. 14 Acuérdate, Dios mío, de Tobías y de Sanbalat, conforme a estas cosas que hicieron; también acuérdate de Noadías profetisa, y de los otros profetas que procuraban infundirme miedo.

15 Fue terminado, pues, el muro, el veinticinco del mes de Elul, en cincuenta y dos días. 16 Y cuando lo oyeron todos nuestros enemigos, temieron todas las naciones que estaban alrededor de nosotros, y se sintieron humillados, y conocieron que por nuestro Dios había sido hecha esta obra.

17 Asimismo en aquellos días iban muchas cartas de los principales de Judá a Tobías, y las de Tobías venían a ellos. 18 Porque muchos en Judá se habían conjurado con él, porque era yerno de Secanías hijo de Ara; y Johanán su hijo había tomado por mujer a la hija de Mesulam hijo de Berequías. 19 También contaban delante de mí las buenas obras de él, y a él le referían mis palabras. Y enviaba Tobías cartas para atemorizarme.

Nehemías designa dirigentes

7 Luego que el muro fue edificado, y colocadas las puertas, y fueron señalados porteros y cantores y levitas, 2 mandé a mi hermano Hanani, y a Hananías, jefe de la fortaleza de Jerusalén (porque este era varón de verdad y temeroso de Dios, más que muchos); 3 y les dije: No se abran las puertas de Jerusalén hasta que caliente el sol; y aunque haya gente allí, cerrad las puertas y atrancadlas. Y señalé guardas de los moradores de Jerusalén, cada cual en su turno, y cada uno delante de su casa.

Builders of the Walls

3 Then (A)Eliashib the high priest arose with his brothers the priests and built (B)the Sheep Gate; they consecrated it and (C)installed its doors. They consecrated [a]the wall to (D)the Tower of the Hundred and (E)the Tower of Hananel. 2 And next to him (F)the men of Jericho built, and next to [b]them Zaccur the son of Imri built.

3 Now the sons of Hassenaah built (G)the Fish Gate; they laid its beams and installed its doors with its bolts and bars. 4 Next to them Meremoth the son of Uriah the son of Hakkoz made repairs. And next to [c]him Meshullam the son of Berechiah the son of Meshezabel made repairs. And next to [d]him Zadok the son of Baana also made repairs. 5 Moreover, next to [e]him the Tekoites made repairs, but their nobles did not [f]support the work of their masters.

6 Now Joiada the son of Paseah and Meshullam the son of Besodeiah repaired (H)the Ancient Gate; they laid its beams and installed its doors with its bolts and its bars. 7 Next to them Melatiah the Gibeonite and Jadon the Meronothite, the men of Gibeon and of Mizpah, [g]also made repairs for the official seat of the (I)governor of the province beyond the Euphrates River. 8 Next to him Uzziel the son of Harhaiah of the (J)goldsmiths made repairs. And next to him Hananiah, one of the perfumers, made repairs, and they restored Jerusalem as far as (K)the Broad Wall. 9 And next to them Rephaiah the son of Hur, (L)the official of half the district of Jerusalem, made repairs. 10 Next to them Jedaiah the son of Harumaph made repairs opposite his house. And next to him Hattush the son of Hashabneiah made repairs. 11 Malchijah the son of Harim and Hasshub the son of Pahath-moab repaired another section and (M)the Tower of Furnaces. 12 Next to him Shallum the son of Hallohesh, (N)the official of half the district of Jerusalem, made repairs, he and his daughters.

13 Hanun and the inhabitants of Zanoah repaired (O)the Valley Gate. They built it and installed its doors with its bolts and its bars, and a [h]thousand cubits of the wall to the Dung Gate.

14 And Malchijah the son of Rechab, the official of the district of (P)Beth-haccherem repaired the (Q)Dung Gate. He built it and installed its doors with its bolts and its bars.

15 Shallum the son of Col-hozeh, the official of the district of Mizpah, (R)repaired the Fountain Gate. He built it, made a roof for it, and installed its doors with its bolts and its bars, and the wall of the Pool of Shelah at (S)the king’s garden as far as (T)the steps that descend from the city of David. 16 After him Nehemiah the son of Azbuk, (U)official of half the district of Beth-zur, made repairs as far as a point opposite the tombs of David, and as far as (V)the [i]artificial pool and the house of the mighty men. 17 After him the Levites carried out repairs under Rehum the son of Bani. Next to him Hashabiah, the official of half the district of Keilah, carried out repairs for his district. 18 After him their brothers carried out repairs under Bavvai the son of Henadad, official of the other half of the district of Keilah. 19 And next to him Ezer the son of Jeshua, (W)the official of Mizpah, repaired [j]another section in front of the ascent of the armory (X)at the Angle. 20 After him Baruch the son of Zabbai zealously repaired another section, from the Angle to the doorway of the house of (Y)Eliashib the high priest. 21 After him Meremoth the son of Uriah the son of Hakkoz repaired another section, from the doorway of Eliashib’s house even as far as the end of [k]his house. 22 And after him the priests, (Z)the men of the [l]vicinity, carried out repairs. 23 After [m]them Benjamin and Hasshub carried out repairs in front of their house. After [n]them Azariah the son of Maaseiah, son of Ananiah, carried out repairs beside his house. 24 After him Binnui the son of Henadad repaired another section, from the house of Azariah as far as (AA)the Angle and as far as the corner. 25 Palal the son of Uzai made repairs in front of the Angle and the tower projecting from the upper house of the king, which is by (AB)the courtyard of the guard. After him Pedaiah the son of Parosh made repairs. 26 Now (AC)the temple servants living in (AD)Ophel made repairs as far as the front of (AE)the Water Gate toward the east and the projecting tower. 27 After [o]them (AF)the Tekoites repaired another section in front of the great projecting tower and as far as the wall of Ophel.

28 Above (AG)the Horse Gate the priests carried out repairs, each in front of his house. 29 After [p]them Zadok the son of Immer carried out repairs in front of his house. And after him Shemaiah the son of Shecaniah, the keeper of the East Gate, carried out repairs. 30 After him Hananiah the son of Shelemiah, and Hanun the sixth son of Zalaph, repaired another section. After him Meshullam the son of Berechiah carried out repairs in front of his own quarters. 31 After him Malchijah, [q]one of (AH)the goldsmiths, carried out repairs as far as the house of the temple servants and of the merchants, in front of the [r]Inspection Gate and as far as the upper room of the corner. 32 And between the upper room of the corner and (AI)the Sheep Gate the goldsmiths and the merchants carried out repairs.

Work Is Ridiculed

4 [s]Now it came about that when (AJ)Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he became furious and very angry, and he mocked the Jews. 2 And he spoke in the presence of his brothers and (AK)the [t]wealthy people of Samaria and said, “What are these feeble Jews doing? Are they going to restore the temple for themselves? Can they offer sacrifices? Can they finish it in a day? Can they revive the stones from the (AL)heaps of rubble, even the burned ones?” 3 Now Tobiah the Ammonite was near him, and he said, “Even what they are building—(AM)if a fox were to [u]jump on it, it would break their stone wall down!”

4 (AN)Hear, O our God, how we are an object of contempt! (AO)Return their taunting on their own heads, and turn them into plunder in a land of captivity. 5 Do not [v](AP)forgive their guilt and do not let their sin be wiped out before You, for they have [w]demoralized the builders.

6 So we built the wall, and the entire wall was joined together to half its height, for the people had a [x]mind to work.

7 [y]Now when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites heard that the [z]repair of the walls of Jerusalem went [aa]on, and that the breaches began to be closed, they were very angry. 8 So all of them (AQ)conspired together to come to fight against Jerusalem and to cause confusion in it.

Discouragement Overcome

9 But we prayed to our God, and because of them we (AR)set up a guard against them day and night.

10 And so [ab]in Judah it was said:

“The strength of the burden bearers is failing,
Yet there is much rubble;
And we ourselves are unable
To rebuild the wall.”

11 And our enemies said, “They will not know or see until we come among them, kill them, and put a stop to the work.” 12 When the Jews who lived near them came and told us ten times, “[ac]They will come up against us from every place where you may turn,” 13 then I stationed men in the lowest parts of the space behind the wall, the exposed places, and I (AS)stationed the people in families with their swords, spears, and bows. 14 When I saw their fear, I stood and said to the nobles, the officials, and the rest of the people: “(AT)Do not be afraid of them; remember the Lord who is great and awesome, and (AU)fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your houses.”

15 Now when our enemies heard that it was known to us, and that (AV)God had frustrated their plan, then all of us returned to the wall, each one to his work. 16 And from that day on, half of my servants carried on the work while half of them kept hold of the spears, the shields, the bows, and the coats of mail; and the captains were behind all the house of Judah. 17 Those who were rebuilding the wall and those who carried burdens carried with one hand doing the work, and the other keeping hold of a weapon. 18 As for the builders, each wore his sword strapped to his waist as he built, while [ad]the trumpeter stood near me. 19 And I said to the nobles, the officials, and the rest of the people, “The work is great and extensive, and we are separated on the wall far from one another. 20 At whatever place you hear the sound of the trumpet, assemble to us there. (AW)Our God will fight for us.”

21 So we carried on the work with half of them holding spears from [ae]dawn until the stars [af]appeared. 22 At that time I also said to the people, “Each man with his servant shall spend the night within Jerusalem, so that they may be a guard for us by night and a laborer by day.” 23 So neither I, my brothers, my servants, nor the men of the guard who followed me—none of us [ag]removed our clothes; each took his weapon even to the water.

Charging Interest Abolished

5 Now (AX)there was a great outcry of the people and of their wives against their (AY)Jewish brothers. 2 For there were those who said, “We, our sons, and our daughters are many; therefore let’s (AZ)get grain so that we may eat and live.” 3 And there were others who said, “We are mortgaging our fields, our vineyards, and our houses so that we might get grain because of the famine.” 4 There also were those who said, “We have borrowed money (BA)for the king’s tax on our fields and our vineyards. 5 And now (BB)our flesh is like the flesh of our brothers, our children like their children. Yet behold, (BC)we are forcing our sons and our daughters to be slaves, and some of our daughters are forced into bondage already, and [ah]we are helpless because our fields and vineyards belong to others.”

6 Then I was very (BD)angry when I heard their outcry and these words. 7 So I thought it over and contended with the nobles and the leading people, and said to them, “(BE)You are lending at interest, each to his brother!” Therefore, I held a great assembly against them. 8 And I said to them, “We, according to our ability, (BF)have [ai]redeemed our Jewish brothers who were sold to the nations; now would you even sell your brothers that they may be sold to us?” Then they were silent and could not find a word to say. 9 So I said, “The thing which you are doing is not good; should you not walk in the fear of our God because of (BG)the taunting of the nations, our enemies? 10 And likewise I, my brothers, and my servants are lending them money and grain. Please, let’s [aj]do without this interest. 11 Please, give back to them this very day their fields, their vineyards, their olive groves, and their houses, as well as the hundredth part of the money and of the grain, the new wine, and the oil that you are charging as interest from them.” 12 Then they said, “We (BH)will give it back and (BI)will require nothing from them; we will do exactly as you say.” So I called the priests and made them (BJ)take an oath to act in accordance with this [ak]promise. 13 I (BK)also shook out the [al]front of my garment and said, “So may God shake out every person from his house and from his possessions who does not keep this [am]promise; just so may he be shaken out and emptied.” And (BL)all the assembly said, “Amen!” And they praised the Lord. Then the people acted in accordance with this [an]promise.

Nehemiah’s Example

14 Furthermore, since the day that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from (BM)the twentieth year to the (BN)thirty-second year of King Artaxerxes, for twelve years, neither I nor my kinsmen have eaten the governor’s food allowance. 15 But the previous governors who were before me [ao]laid burdens on the people and took from them bread and wine besides forty shekels of silver; even their servants domineered the people. But I did not do so (BO)because of my fear of God. 16 I also [ap]applied myself to the work on this wall; we did not buy any land, and all my servants were gathered there for the work. 17 Moreover, (BP)there were at my table 150 Jews and officials, besides those who came to us from the nations that were around us. 18 Now (BQ)that which was prepared for each day was one ox and six choice sheep; also birds were prepared for me, and every ten days all sorts of wine were provided in abundance. Yet for all this (BR)I did not request the governor’s food allowance, because the forced labor was heavy on this people. 19 (BS)Remember me, my God, for good, in return for all that I have done for this people.

The Enemy’s Plot

6 Now when it was reported to Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, and to the rest of our enemies that I had rebuilt the wall, and that no breach was left in it, (BT)although at that time I had not installed the doors in the gates, 2 Sanballat and Geshem sent a message to me, saying, “Come, let’s meet together [aq]at Chephirim in the plain of (BU)Ono.” But they were plotting to [ar]harm me. 3 So I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work and am unable to come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and come down to you?” 4 Then they sent messages to me four times worded in this way, and I answered them with the same wording. 5 Then Sanballat sent his servant to me in the same way a fifth time with an open letter in his hand. 6 In it was written: “It is reported among the nations, and [as]Gashmu says, that (BV)you and the Jews intend to rebel; for that reason you are rebuilding the wall. And you are to be their king, according to these reports. 7 You have also appointed prophets to proclaim in Jerusalem concerning [at]you, ‘A king is in Judah!’ And now it will be reported to the king according to these reports. So come now, let’s consult together.” 8 Then I sent a message to him saying, “Nothing like these things that you are saying has been done, but you are (BW)inventing them [au]in your own mind.” 9 For all of them were trying to frighten us, [av]thinking, “[aw]They will become discouraged with the work and it will not be done.” But now, (BX)God, strengthen my hands.

10 When I entered the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah, son of Mehetabel, (BY)who was confined at home, he said, “Let’s meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let’s close the doors of the temple, for they are coming to kill you, and they are coming to kill you at night.” 11 But I said, “(BZ)Should a man like me flee? And who is there like me who would go into the temple [ax]to save his own life? I will not go in.” 12 Then I realized [ay]that God certainly had not sent him, but he uttered his prophecy against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him. 13 He was hired for this reason, (CA)that I would become frightened and act accordingly and sin, so that they might have an evil report in order that they could taunt me. 14 (CB)Remember, my God, Tobiah and Sanballat in accordance with these works of theirs, and also Noadiah (CC)the prophetess and the rest of the prophets, who were trying to frighten me.

The Wall Is Finished

15 So (CD)the wall was completed on the twenty-fifth of the month Elul, in fifty-two days. 16 (CE)When all our enemies heard about it, and all the nations surrounding us saw it, they [az]lost their confidence; for (CF)they realized that this work had been accomplished [ba]with the help of our God. 17 Also in those days many letters went from the nobles of Judah to Tobiah, and [bb]Tobiah’s letters came to them. 18 For many in Judah were bound by oath to him because he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah the son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah. 19 Moreover, they were speaking about his good deeds in my presence, and were reporting my words to him. Then Tobiah sent letters to frighten me.

Census of First Returned Exiles

7 Now when (CG)the wall was rebuilt and I had installed the doors, and the gatekeepers, the singers, and the Levites were appointed, 2 then I put (CH)Hanani my brother, and (CI)Hananiah the commander of (CJ)the citadel, in charge of Jerusalem, for he was (CK)a faithful man and feared God more than many. 3 Then I said to them, “The gates of Jerusalem are not to be opened until the sun is hot, and while they are standing guard, the gatekeepers are to [bc]keep the doors shut and bolted. Also appoint guards from the inhabitants of Jerusalem, each at his post, and each in front of his own house.”
