73 So the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, some of the people, the Nethinim, and all Israel dwelt in their cities.

Ezra Reads the Law

(A)When the seventh month came, the children of Israel were in their cities.

Ezra Reads and Explains the Law

Now all (B)the people gathered together as one man in the open square that was (C)in front of the Water Gate; and they told Ezra the (D)scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded Israel. So Ezra the priest brought (E)the Law before the assembly of men and women and all who could hear with understanding (F)on the first day of the seventh month. Then he (G)read from it in the open square that was in front of the Water Gate [a]from morning until midday, before the men and women and those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law.

So Ezra the scribe stood on a platform of wood which they had made for the purpose; and beside him, at his right hand, stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Urijah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah; and at his left hand Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbadana, Zechariah, and Meshullam. And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was standing above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people (H)stood up. And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God.

Then all the people (I)answered, “Amen, Amen!” while (J)lifting up their hands. And they (K)bowed their heads and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.

Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, (L)helped the people to understand the Law; and the people (M)stood in their place. So they read distinctly from the book, in the Law of God; and they gave the sense, and helped them to understand the reading.

(N)And Nehemiah, who was the [b]governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, (O)“This day is holy to the Lord your God; (P)do not mourn nor weep.” For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the Law.

10 Then he said to them, “Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, (Q)and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

11 So the Levites quieted all the people, saying, “Be still, for the day is holy; do not be grieved.” 12 And all the people went their way to eat and drink, to (R)send portions and rejoice greatly, because they (S)understood the words that were declared to them.

Ezra Reads the Law

When the seventh month came and the Israelites had settled in their towns,(C) all the people came together as one in the square before the Water Gate.(D) They told Ezra the teacher of the Law to bring out the Book of the Law of Moses,(E) which the Lord had commanded for Israel.

So on the first day of the seventh month(F) Ezra the priest brought the Law(G) before the assembly, which was made up of men and women and all who were able to understand. He read it aloud from daybreak till noon as he faced the square before the Water Gate(H) in the presence of the men, women and others who could understand. And all the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law.

Ezra the teacher of the Law stood on a high wooden platform(I) built for the occasion. Beside him on his right stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah and Maaseiah; and on his left were Pedaiah, Mishael, Malkijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah and Meshullam.

Ezra opened the book. All the people could see him because he was standing(J) above them; and as he opened it, the people all stood up. Ezra praised the Lord, the great God; and all the people lifted their hands(K) and responded, “Amen! Amen!” Then they bowed down and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.

The Levites(L)—Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan and Pelaiah—instructed(M) the people in the Law while the people were standing there. They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear[a] and giving the meaning so that the people understood what was being read.

Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and teacher of the Law, and the Levites(N) who were instructing the people said to them all, “This day is holy to the Lord your God. Do not mourn or weep.”(O) For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law.

10 Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing(P) prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy(Q) of the Lord is your strength.”

11 The Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Be still, for this is a holy day. Do not grieve.”

12 Then all the people went away to eat and drink, to send portions of food and to celebrate with great joy,(R) because they now understood the words that had been made known to them.
