Review of the Journey from Egypt to Jordan

33 These are the journeys of the sons of Israel, by which they came out of the land of Egypt by their armies, ^[a]under ^(A)the leadership of Moses and Aaron. ²Moses recorded their starting places according to their journeys by the ^[b]command of the Lord, and these are their journeys according to their starting places. ³^(B)Now they journeyed from Rameses in the first month, on the fifteenth day of the first month; on the day after the Passover the sons of Israel ^(C)started out ^[c]boldly in the sight of all the Egyptians, ⁴while the Egyptians were burying all their firstborn whom the Lord had fatally struck among them. The Lord had also executed judgments ^(D)against their gods.

⁵Then ^(E)the sons of Israel journeyed from Rameses and camped in Succoth. ⁶^(F)They journeyed from Succoth and camped in Etham, which is on the edge of the wilderness. ⁷^(G)Then they journeyed from Etham and turned back to Pi-hahiroth, which faces Baal-zephon; and they camped before Migdol. ⁸^(H)They journeyed ^[d]from Pi-hahiroth and passed through the midst of the sea to the wilderness; and ^(I)they went three days’ journey in the wilderness of Etham and camped at Marah. ⁹^(J)They journeyed from Marah and came to Elim; and in Elim there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees, and they camped there. ¹⁰They journeyed from Elim and camped by the ^[e]Red Sea. ¹¹And they journeyed from the ^[f]Red Sea and camped in ^(K)the wilderness of Sin. ¹²They journeyed from the wilderness of Sin and camped at Dophkah. ¹³They journeyed from Dophkah and camped at Alush. ¹⁴And they journeyed from Alush and camped ^(L)at Rephidim; now it was there that the people had no water to drink. ¹⁵And they journeyed from Rephidim and camped in ^(M)the wilderness of Sinai. ¹⁶They journeyed from the wilderness of Sinai, and camped at ^(N)Kibroth-hattaavah.

¹⁷They journeyed from Kibroth-hattaavah and camped at ^(O)Hazeroth. ¹⁸They journeyed from Hazeroth and camped at Rithmah. ¹⁹They journeyed from Rithmah and camped at Rimmon-perez. ²⁰They journeyed from Rimmon-perez and camped at ^(P)Libnah. ²¹They journeyed from Libnah and camped at Rissah. ²²They journeyed from Rissah and camped in Kehelathah. ²³They journeyed from Kehelathah and camped at Mount Shepher. ²⁴They journeyed from Mount Shepher and camped at Haradah. ²⁵They journeyed from Haradah and camped at Makheloth. ²⁶They journeyed from Makheloth and camped at Tahath. ²⁷They journeyed from Tahath and camped at Terah. ²⁸They journeyed from Terah and camped at Mithkah. ²⁹They journeyed from Mithkah and camped at Hashmonah. ³⁰They journeyed from Hashmonah and camped at ^(Q)Moseroth. ³¹They journeyed from Moseroth and camped at Bene-jaakan. ³²They journeyed from ^(R)Bene-jaakan and camped at Hor-haggidgad. ³³They journeyed from Hor-haggidgad and camped at ^(S)Jotbathah. ³⁴They journeyed from Jotbathah and camped at Abronah. ³⁵They journeyed from Abronah and camped at ^(T)Ezion-geber. ³⁶They journeyed from Ezion-geber and camped in the wilderness of ^(U)Zin, that is, Kadesh. ³⁷They journeyed from Kadesh and camped at ^(V)Mount Hor, ^(W)at the edge of the land of Edom.

³⁸^(X)Then Aaron the priest went up to Mount Hor at the ^[g]command of the Lord, and died there in the fortieth year after the sons of Israel had come from the land of Egypt, on the first day in the fifth month. ³⁹Aaron was 123 years old when he died on Mount Hor.

⁴⁰Now the Canaanite, the king of ^(Y)Arad ^[h]who lived in the ^[i]Negev in the land of Canaan, heard about the coming of the sons of Israel.

⁴¹Then they journeyed from Mount Hor and camped at Zalmonah. ⁴²They journeyed from Zalmonah and camped at Punon. ⁴³They journeyed from Punon and camped at ^(Z)Oboth. ⁴⁴They journeyed from Oboth and camped at Iye-abarim, at the border of Moab. ⁴⁵They journeyed from Iyim and camped at Dibon-gad. ⁴⁶They journeyed from Dibon-gad and camped at Almon-diblathaim. ⁴⁷They journeyed from Almon-diblathaim and camped in the mountains of ^(AA)Abarim, before Nebo. ⁴⁸They journeyed from the mountains of Abarim and ^(AB)camped in the plains of Moab, by the Jordan opposite Jericho. ⁴⁹They camped by the Jordan, from Beth-jeshimoth as far as ^(AC)Abel-shittim, in the plains of Moab.

Law for Possessing the Land

⁵⁰Then the Lord spoke to Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan opposite Jericho, saying, ⁵¹“Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘^(AD)When you cross the Jordan into the land of Canaan, ⁵²you shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from you, and ^(AE)destroy all their idolatrous sculptures, destroy all their cast metal images, and eliminate all their high places; ⁵³^(AF)and you shall take possession of the land and live in it, for I have given the land to you to possess it. ⁵⁴^(AG)You shall maintain the land as an inheritance by lot according to your families; to the larger you shall give more inheritance, and to the smaller you shall give less inheritance. Wherever the lot falls to anyone, that shall be his. You shall pass on land as an inheritance according to the tribes of your fathers. ⁵⁵But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land from you, then it will come about that those whom you let remain of them will be ^(AH)like thorns in your eyes and like pricks in your sides, and they will trouble you in the land in which you live. ⁵⁶And just as I plan to do to them, I will do to you.’”

God’s Guidance of His People in Spite of Their Unfaithfulness.

A ^[a]Maskil of Asaph.

78 ^(A)Listen, my people, to my ^[b]instruction;
^(B)Incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
²I will ^(C)open my mouth in a parable;
I will tell ^(D)riddles of old,
³Which we have heard and known,
And ^(E)our fathers have told us.
⁴We will ^(F)not conceal them from their children,
But we will ^(G)tell the generation to come the praises of the Lord,
And His power and His ^(H)wondrous works that He has done.

⁵For He established a ^(I)testimony in Jacob,
And appointed a ^(J)law in Israel,
Which He ^(K)commanded our fathers
That they were to ^[c]^(L)teach them to their children,
⁶^(M)So that the generation to come would know, ^(N)the children yet to be born,
That they would arise and ^(O)tell them to their children,
⁷So that they would put their confidence in God
And ^(P)not forget the works of God,
But ^(Q)comply with His commandments,
⁸And ^(R)not be like their fathers,
A ^(S)stubborn and rebellious generation,
A generation that ^(T)did not ^[d]prepare its heart
And whose spirit was not ^(U)faithful to God.

⁹The sons of Ephraim ^[e]were ^(V)archers equipped with bows,
Yet ^(W)they turned back on the day of battle.
¹⁰They ^(X)did not keep the covenant of God
And refused to ^(Y)walk in His Law;
¹¹They ^(Z)forgot His deeds
And His ^[f]miracles that He had shown them.
¹²^(AA)He performed wonders before their fathers
In the land of Egypt, in the ^(AB)field of Zoan.
¹³He ^(AC)divided the sea and caused them to pass through,
And He made the waters stand ^(AD)up like a heap.
¹⁴Then He led them with the cloud by ^(AE)day
And all the night with a ^(AF)light of fire.
¹⁵He ^(AG)split the rocks in the wilderness
And gave them plenty to drink like the ocean depths.
¹⁶He ^(AH)brought forth streams from the rock
And made waters run down like rivers.

¹⁷Yet they still continued to sin against Him,
To ^(AI)rebel against the Most High in the desert.
¹⁸And in their heart they ^(AJ)put God to the test
By asking for ^(AK)food ^[g]that suited their taste.
¹⁹Then they spoke against God;
They said, “^(AL)Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?
²⁰Behold, He ^(AM)struck the rock so that waters gushed out,
And streams were overflowing;
Can He also provide bread?
Will He prepare ^(AN)meat for His people?”

²¹Therefore the Lord heard and ^[h]was ^(AO)full of wrath;
And a fire was kindled against Jacob,
And anger also mounted against Israel,
²²Because they ^(AP)did not believe in God
And did not trust in His salvation.
²³Yet He commanded the clouds above
And ^(AQ)opened the doors of heaven;
²⁴He ^(AR)rained down manna upon them to eat,
And gave them ^[i]^(AS)food from heaven.
²⁵Man ate the bread of ^[j]angels;
He sent them ^[k]food ^[l]^(AT)in abundance.
²⁶He ^(AU)made the east wind blow in the sky
And by His ^[m]power He directed the south wind.
²⁷When He rained meat upon them like the dust,
Even ^(AV)winged fowl like the sand of the seas,
²⁸He let them fall in the midst of ^[n]their camp,
All around their dwellings.
²⁹So they ^(AW)ate and were well filled,
And He ^[o]satisfied their longing.
³⁰^[p]Yet before they had abandoned their longing,
^(AX)While their food was in their mouths,
³¹The ^(AY)anger of God rose against them
And killed ^[q]some of their ^(AZ)strongest ones,
And ^[r]subdued the choice men of Israel.
³²In spite of all this they ^(BA)still sinned
And ^(BB)did not believe in His wonderful works.
³³So He brought ^(BC)their days to an end in futility,
And their years to an end in sudden terror.

³⁴When He killed them, then they ^(BD)sought Him,
And they returned and searched ^(BE)diligently for God;
³⁵And they remembered that God was their ^(BF)rock,
And the Most High God their ^(BG)Redeemer.
³⁶But they ^(BH)flattered Him with their mouth
And ^(BI)lied to Him with their tongue.
³⁷For their heart was not ^(BJ)steadfast toward Him,
Nor were they faithful with His covenant.

Song of Praise for God’s Favor

25 Lord, You are ^(A)my God;
I will exalt You, I will give thanks to Your name;
For You have ^(B)worked wonders,
^(C)Plans formed long ago, with perfect faithfulness.
²For You have turned a city into a ^(D)heap,
A ^(E)fortified city into a ruin;
A ^(F)palace of strangers is no longer a city,
It will never be rebuilt.
³Therefore a strong people will ^(G)glorify You;
^(H)Cities of ruthless nations will revere You.
⁴For You have been a ^(I)stronghold for the helpless,
A stronghold for the poor in his distress,
A ^(J)refuge from the storm, a shade from the heat;
For the breath of the ^(K)ruthless
Is like a rain storm against a wall.
⁵Like heat in a dry land, You subdue the ^(L)uproar of foreigners;
Like heat by the shadow of a cloud, the song of the ruthless is ^[a]silenced.

⁶^(M)Now the Lord of armies will prepare a ^[b]lavish banquet for ^(N)all peoples on this mountain;
A banquet of ^[c]aged wine, ^[d]choice pieces with marrow,
And ^[e]refined, aged wine.
⁷And on this mountain He will destroy the ^[f]^(O)covering which is over all peoples,
The veil which is ^[g]stretched over all nations.
⁸He will ^[h]^(P)swallow up death for all time,
And the Lord ^[i]God will ^(Q)wipe tears away from all faces,
And He will remove the ^(R)disgrace of His people from all the earth;
For the Lord has spoken.
⁹And it will be said on that day,
“Behold, ^(S)this is our God for whom we have ^(T)waited ^[j]that ^(U)He might save us.
This is the Lord for whom we have waited;
^(V)Let’s rejoice and be glad in His salvation.”
¹⁰For the hand of the Lord will rest on this mountain,
And ^(W)Moab will be trampled down in his place
As straw is trampled down in the water of a manure pile.
¹¹And he will ^(X)spread out his hands in the middle of it
As a swimmer spreads out his hands to swim,
But the Lord will ^(Y)lay low his pride together with the trickery of his hands.
¹²The ^(Z)unassailable fortifications of your walls He will bring down,
Lay low, and throw to the ground, to the dust.

Children of God Love One Another

3 See ^[a]^(A)how great a love the Father has given us, that we would be called ^(B)children of God; and in fact we are. For this reason the world does not know us: because ^(C)it did not know Him. ²^(D)Beloved, now we are ^(E)children of God, and ^(F)it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He ^(G)appears, we will be ^(H)like Him, because we will ^(I)see Him just as He is. ³And everyone who has this ^(J)hope set on Him ^(K)purifies himself, just as He is pure.

⁴Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and ^(L)sin is lawlessness. ⁵You know that He ^(M)appeared in order to ^(N)take away sins; and ^(O)in Him there is no sin. ⁶No one who remains in Him ^(P)sins continually; no one who sins continually has seen Him or ^[b]^(Q)knows Him. ⁷^(R)Little children, make sure no one ^(S)deceives you; ^(T)the one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous; ⁸the one who practices sin is ^(U)of the devil; for the devil ^[c]has been sinning from the beginning. ^(V)The Son of God ^(W)appeared for this purpose, ^(X)to destroy the works of the devil. ⁹No one who has been ^(Y)born of God practices sin, because His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin continually, because he has been born of God. ¹⁰By this the ^(Z)children of God and the ^(AA)children of the devil are obvious: ^[d]anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who ^(AB)does not love his ^(AC)brother and sister.

¹¹^(AD)For this is the message ^(AE)which you have heard from the beginning, ^(AF)that we are to love one another; ¹²not as ^(AG)Cain, who was of ^(AH)the evil one and murdered his brother. And for what reason did he murder him? Because ^(AI)his own deeds were evil, but his brother’s were righteous.

¹³Do not be surprised, brothers and sisters, if ^(AJ)the world hates you. ¹⁴We know that we have ^(AK)passed out of death into life, ^(AL)because we love the brothers and sisters. The one who does not love remains in death. ¹⁵Everyone who ^(AM)hates his brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that ^(AN)no murderer has eternal life remaining in him. ¹⁶We know love by this, that ^(AO)He laid down His life for us; and ^(AP)we ought to lay down our lives for the ^(AQ)brothers and sisters. ¹⁷But ^(AR)whoever has worldly goods and sees his brother or sister in need, and ^(AS)closes his ^[e]heart ^[f]against him, ^(AT)how does the love of God remain in him? ¹⁸^(AU)Little children, let’s not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and ^(AV)truth. ¹⁹We will know by this that we are ^(AW)of the truth, and will set our heart at ease before Him, ²⁰that if our heart condemns us, that God is greater than our heart, and He knows all things. ²¹^(AX)Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have ^(AY)confidence ^[g]before God; ²²and ^(AZ)whatever we ask, we receive from Him, because we ^(BA)keep His commandments and do ^(BB)the things that are pleasing in His sight.

²³This is His commandment, that we ^[h]^(BC)believe in ^(BD)the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as ^(BE)He ^[i]commanded us. ²⁴The one who ^(BF)keeps His commandments ^(BG)remains in Him, and He in him. ^(BH)We know by this that ^(BI)He remains in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.
