Love Your Enemies

43 (A)“You have heard that it was said, (B)‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, (C)Love your enemies and (D)pray for those who persecute you, 45 (E)so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and (F)sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 (G)For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?

The Great Commandment

28 (A)And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” 29 Jesus answered, “The most important is, (B)‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, (C)the Lord is one. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 (D)The second is this: (E)‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment (F)greater than these.” 32 And the scribe said to him, “You are right, Teacher. You have truly said that (G)he is one, and (H)there is no other besides him. 33 And to love him with all the heart and with all (I)the understanding and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as oneself, (J)is much more than all (K)whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” 34 And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” (L)And after that no one dared to ask him any more questions.

Love Your Enemies

27 “But I say to you who hear, (A)Love your enemies, (B)do good to those who hate you, 28 (C)bless those who curse you, (D)pray for those who abuse you. 29 (E)To one who (F)strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic[a] either. 30 (G)Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back. 31 And (H)as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.

32 (I)“If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 And (J)if you (K)lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount. 35 But (L)love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and (M)you will be sons of (N)the Most High, for (O)he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. 36 (P)Be merciful, even as (Q)your Father is merciful.

Fulfilling the Law Through Love

(A)Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for (B)the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, (C)“You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: (D)“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore (E)love is the fulfilling of the law.

14 I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus (A)that nothing is unclean in itself, (B)but it is unclean for anyone who thinks it unclean. 15 For if your brother is grieved by what you eat, (C)you are no longer walking in love. (D)By what you eat, do not destroy the one for whom Christ died.

The Way of Love

13 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have (A)prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, (B)so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. (C)If I give away all I have, and (D)if I deliver up my body to be burned,[a] but have not love, I gain nothing.

(E)Love is patient and (F)kind; love (G)does not envy or boast; it (H)is not arrogant or rude. It (I)does not insist on its own way; it (J)is not irritable or resentful;[b] it (K)does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but (L)rejoices with the truth. (M)Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, (N)endures all things.

Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.

13 For you were called to freedom, brothers. (A)Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love (B)serve one another. 14 For (C)the whole law is fulfilled in one word: (D)“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 But if you (E)bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another.

Love One Another

11 For (A)this is the message that you have heard from the beginning, (B)that we should love one another. 12 We should not be like (C)Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? (D)Because his own deeds were evil and his brother's righteous. 13 Do not be surprised, brothers,[a] (E)that the world hates you. 14 We know that (F)we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death. 15 (G)Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that (H)no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

16 By this we know love, that (I)he laid down his life for us, and (J)we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. 17 But (K)if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet (L)closes his heart against him, (M)how does God's love abide in him? 18 Little children, let us not (N)love in word or talk but in deed and (O)in truth.

God Is Love

Beloved, (A)let us love one another, for love is from God, and (B)whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. (C)Anyone who does not love does not know God, because (D)God is love.

By this you know the Spirit of God: (A)every spirit that confesses that (B)Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit (C)that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and (D)now is in the world already. Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for (E)he who is in you is greater than (F)he who is in the world. (G)They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and (H)the world listens to them. We are from God. (I)Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know (J)the Spirit of truth and (K)the spirit of error.

God Is Love

Beloved, (L)let us love one another, for love is from God, and (M)whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. (N)Anyone who does not love does not know God, because (O)God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that (P)God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. 10 In this is love, (Q)not that we have loved God (R)but that he loved us and sent his Son to be (S)the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 (T)No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and (U)his love is perfected in us.

13 (V)By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. 14 And (W)we have seen and testify that (X)the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of (Y)the world. 15 (Z)Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. 16 So (AA)we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. (AB)God is love, and (AC)whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. 17 By this (AD)is love perfected with us, so that (AE)we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because (AF)as he is so also are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love, but (AG)perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not (AH)been perfected in love. 19 (AI)We love because he first loved us. 20 (AJ)If anyone says, “I love God,” and (AK)hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot[a] love God (AL)whom he has not seen. 21 And (AM)this commandment we have from him: (AN)whoever loves God must also love his brother.
