38 (A)You have heard that it was said, ‘(B)Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ 39 But I say to you, do not show opposition against an evil person; but (C)whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other toward him also. 40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your [a]tunic, let him have your [b]cloak also. 41 Whoever [c]forces you to go one mile, go with him two. 42 (D)Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you.

43 (E)You have heard that it was said, ‘(F)You shall love your neighbor (G)and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, (H)love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may prove yourselves to be (I)sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 For (J)if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Even the tax collectors, do they not do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Even the Gentiles, do they not do the same? 48 Therefore (K)you shall be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Charitable Giving to the Poor and Prayer

“Take care not to practice your righteousness in the sight of people, (L)to be noticed by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.

“So when you [d]give to the poor, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, so that they (M)will be praised by people. (N)Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. But when you [e]give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your charitable giving will be in secret; and (O)your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

“And when you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to (P)stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners (Q)so that they [f]will be seen by people. (R)Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. But as for you, when you pray, (S)go into your inner room, close your door, and pray to your Father who is in secret; and (T)your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

“And when you are praying, do not use thoughtless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard because of their (U)many words. So do not be like them; for (V)your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.

The Lord’s Prayer

(W)Pray, then, in this way:

‘Our Father, who is in heaven,
[g]Hallowed be Your name.
10 [h](X)Your kingdom come.
(Y)Your will be done,
[i]On earth as it is in heaven.
11 (Z)Give us this day [j]our daily bread.
12 And (AA)forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And do not lead us into temptation, but (AB)deliver us from [k](AC)evil.[l]

14 (AD)For if you forgive other people for their [m]offenses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But (AE)if you do not forgive other people, then your Father will not forgive your [n]offenses.
