¹⁷ And a voice from heaven^(A) said, “This is my Son,^(B) whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”^(C)

Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness^(D)

4 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted^[a](E) by the devil.^{(F) 2} After fasting forty days and forty nights,^(G) he was hungry. ³ The tempter^(H) came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God,^(I) tell these stones to become bread.”

⁴ Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’^[b]”^(J)

⁵ Then the devil took him to the holy city^(K) and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. ⁶ “If you are the Son of God,”^(L) he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:

⁷ Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’^[d]”^(N)

⁸ Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. ⁹ “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”

¹⁰ Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan!^(O) For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’^[e]”^(P)

¹¹ Then the devil left him,^(Q) and angels came and attended him.^(R)

Jesus Calls His First Disciples^(A)

¹⁸ As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee,^(B) he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter^(C) and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. ¹⁹ “Come, follow me,”^(D) Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” ²⁰ At once they left their nets and followed him.^(E)

²¹ Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John.^(F) They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, ²² and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.^(G)
