The Soldiers Mock Jesus^(A)

^27 (B)Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the ^[a]Praetorium and gathered the whole ^[b]garrison around Him. ²⁸ And they ^(C)stripped Him and ^(D)put a scarlet robe on Him. ^29 (E)When they had ^[c]twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”

¹⁹ Then they ^(A)struck Him on the head with a reed and spat on Him; and bowing the knee, they worshiped Him. ²⁰ And when they had ^(B)mocked Him, they took the purple off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him.

^21 (D)Then they compelled a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, the father of Alexander and Rufus, as he was coming out of the country and passing by, to bear His cross.

²⁷ And a great multitude of the people followed Him, and women who also mourned and lamented Him. ²⁸ But Jesus, turning to them, said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. ^29 (A)For indeed the days are coming in which they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, wombs that never bore, and breasts which never nursed!’ ³⁰ Then they will begin ^(B)‘to say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” and to the hills, “Cover us!” ’ ^31 (C)For if they do these things in the green wood, what will be done in the dry?”

^32 (D)There were also two others, criminals, led with Him to be put to death.

^33 (A)And when they had come to a place called Golgotha, that is to say, Place of a Skull, ^34 (B)they gave Him ^[a]sour wine mingled with gall to drink. But when He had tasted it, He would not drink.
