Introduction to the Sermon on the Mount

5 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, ² and he began to teach them.

The Beatitudes^(A)

He said:

²⁸ When Jesus had finished saying these things,^(A) the crowds were amazed at his teaching,^{(B) 29} because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.

A Prophet Without Honor^(A)

⁵³ When Jesus had finished these parables,^(B) he moved on from there. ⁵⁴ Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue,^(C) and they were amazed.^(D) “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” they asked.

²² The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law.^(A)
