John the Baptist Prepares the Way^(A)

1 The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah,^[a] the Son of God,^[b](B)

⁸ I baptize you with^[a] water, but he will baptize you with^[b] the Holy Spirit.”^(A)

¹⁰ Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.^{(A) 11} And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son,^(B) whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”^(C)

³² He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.^(A) The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,^{(B) 33} and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom^(C) will never end.”^(D)

¹¹ Today in the town of David a Savior^(A) has been born to you; he is the Messiah,^(B) the Lord.^(C)

²⁶ It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. ²⁷ Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required,^{(A) 28} Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:
