He Is Risen^(A)

28 Now ^(B)after the Sabbath, as the first day of the week began to dawn, Mary Magdalene ^(C)and the other Mary came to see the tomb. ² And behold, there was a great earthquake; for ^(D)an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone ^[a]from the door, and sat on it. ^3 (E)His countenance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. ⁴ And the guards shook for fear of him, and became like ^(F)dead men.

⁵ But the angel answered and said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. ⁶ He is not here; for He is risen, ^(G)as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. ⁷ And go quickly and tell His disciples that He is risen from the dead, and indeed ^(H)He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him. Behold, I have told you.”

⁸ So they went out quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to bring His disciples word.

The Women Worship the Risen Lord

⁹ And ^[b]as they went to tell His disciples, behold, ^(I)Jesus met them, saying, “Rejoice!” So they came and held Him by the feet and worshiped Him. ¹⁰ Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell ^(J)My brethren to go to Galilee, and there they will see Me.”

The Soldiers Are Bribed

¹¹ Now while they were going, behold, some of the guard came into the city and reported to the chief priests all the things that had happened. ¹² When they had assembled with the elders and consulted together, they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers, ¹³ saying, “Tell them, ‘His disciples came at night and stole Him away while we slept.’ ¹⁴ And if this comes to the governor’s ears, we will appease him and make you secure.” ¹⁵ So they took the money and did as they were instructed; and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.

The Great Commission^(K)

¹⁶ Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain ^(L)which Jesus had appointed for them. ¹⁷ When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some ^(M)doubted.

¹⁸ And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, ^(N)“All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. ^19 (O)Go ^[c]therefore and ^(P)make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, ^20 (Q)teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am ^(R)with you always, even to the end of the age.” ^[d]Amen.

He Is Risen^(A)

16 Now ^(B)when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome ^(C)bought spices, that they might come and anoint Him. ^2 (D)Very early in the morning, on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen. ³ And they said among themselves, “Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?” ⁴ But when they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away—for it was very large. ^5 (E)And entering the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a long white robe sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed.

^6 (F)But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him. ⁷ But go, tell His disciples—and Peter—that He is going ^[a]before you into Galilee; there you will see Him, ^(G)as He said to you.”

⁸ So they went out ^[b]quickly and fled from the tomb, for they trembled and were amazed. ^(H)And they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

Mary Magdalene Sees the Risen Lord^(I)

^9 [c]Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, ^(J)out of whom He had cast seven demons. ^10 (K)She went and told those who had been with Him, as they mourned and wept. ^11 (L)And when they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe.

Jesus Appears to Two Disciples^(M)

¹² After that, He appeared in another form ^(N)to two of them as they walked and went into the country. ¹³ And they went and told it to the rest, but they did not believe them either.

The Great Commission^(O)

^14 (P)Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen. ^15 (Q)And He said to them, “Go into all the world ^(R)and preach the gospel to every creature. ^16 (S)He who believes and is baptized will be saved; ^(T)but he who does not believe will be condemned. ¹⁷ And these ^(U)signs will follow those who ^[d]believe: ^(V)In My name they will cast out demons; ^(W)they will speak with new tongues; ^18 (X)they^[e] will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; ^(Y)they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

Christ Ascends to God’s Right Hand^(Z)

¹⁹ So then, ^(AA)after the Lord had spoken to them, He was ^(AB)received up into heaven, and ^(AC)sat down at the right hand of God. ²⁰ And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them ^(AD)and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen.

He Is Risen^(A)

24 Now ^(B)on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, ^[a]and certain other women with them, came to the tomb ^(C)bringing the spices which they had prepared. ^2 (D)But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. ^3 (E)Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. ⁴ And it happened, as they were ^[b]greatly perplexed about this, that ^(F)behold, two men stood by them in shining garments. ⁵ Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? ⁶ He is not here, but is risen! ^(G)Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, ⁷ saying, ‘The Son of Man must be ^(H)delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.’ ”

⁸ And ^(I)they remembered His words. ^9 (J)Then they returned from the tomb and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. ¹⁰ It was Mary Magdalene, ^(K)Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them, who told these things to the apostles. ^11 (L)And their words seemed to them like ^[c]idle tales, and they did not believe them. ^12 (M)But Peter arose and ran to the tomb; and stooping down, he saw the linen cloths ^[d]lying by themselves; and he departed, marveling to himself at what had happened.

The Road to Emmaus^(N)

^13 (O)Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was ^[e]seven miles from Jerusalem. ¹⁴ And they talked together of all these things which had happened. ¹⁵ So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that ^(P)Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. ¹⁶ But ^(Q)their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him.

¹⁷ And He said to them, “What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you ^[f]walk and are sad?”

¹⁸ Then the one ^(R)whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, “Are You the only stranger in Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which happened there in these days?”

¹⁹ And He said to them, “What things?”

So they said to Him, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, ^(S)who was a Prophet ^(T)mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, ^20 (U)and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and crucified Him. ²¹ But we were hoping ^(V)that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened. ²² Yes, and ^(W)certain women of our company, who arrived at the tomb early, astonished us. ²³ When they did not find His body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said He was alive. ²⁴ And ^(X)certain of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but Him they did not see.”

²⁵ Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! ^26 (Y)Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His ^(Z)glory?” ²⁷ And beginning at ^(AA)Moses and ^(AB)all the Prophets, He ^[g]expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

The Disciples’ Eyes Opened

²⁸ Then they drew near to the village where they were going, and ^(AC)He ^[h]indicated that He would have gone farther. ²⁹ But ^(AD)they constrained Him, saying, ^(AE)“Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.” And He went in to stay with them.

³⁰ Now it came to pass, as ^(AF)He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. ³¹ Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight.

³² And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?” ³³ So they rose up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, ³⁴ saying, “The Lord is risen indeed, and ^(AG)has appeared to Simon!” ³⁵ And they told about the things that had happened on the road, and how He was ^[i]known to them in the breaking of bread.

Jesus Appears to His Disciples^(AH)

^36 (AI)Now as they said these things, Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them, “Peace to you.” ³⁷ But they were terrified and frightened, and supposed they had seen ^(AJ)a spirit. ³⁸ And He said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts? ³⁹ Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself. ^(AK)Handle Me and see, for a ^(AL)spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have.”

^40 [j]When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. ⁴¹ But while they still did not believe ^(AM)for joy, and marveled, He said to them, ^(AN)“Have you any food here?” ⁴² So they gave Him a piece of a broiled fish ^[k]and some honeycomb. ^43 (AO)And He took it and ate in their presence.

The Scriptures Opened

⁴⁴ Then He said to them, ^(AP)“These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.” ⁴⁵ And ^(AQ)He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.

⁴⁶ Then He said to them, ^(AR)“Thus it is written, ^[l]and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, ⁴⁷ and that repentance and ^(AS)remission of sins should be preached in His name ^(AT)to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. ⁴⁸ And ^(AU)you are witnesses of these things. ^49 (AV)Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city ^[m]of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”

The Ascension^(AW)

⁵⁰ And He led them out ^(AX)as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them. ^51 (AY)Now it came to pass, while He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up into heaven. ^52 (AZ)And they worshiped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, ⁵³ and were continually ^(BA)in the temple ^[n]praising and blessing God. ^[o]Amen.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus^(A)

19 So then ^(B)Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. ² And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe. ^3 [a]Then they said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they ^(C)struck Him with their hands.

⁴ Pilate then went out again, and said to them, “Behold, I am bringing Him out to you, ^(D)that you may know that I find no fault in Him.”

Pilate’s Decision

⁵ Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, “Behold the Man!”

^6 (E)Therefore, when the chief priests and officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, “Crucify Him, crucify Him!”

Pilate said to them, “You take Him and crucify Him, for I find no fault in Him.”

⁷ The Jews answered him, ^(F)“We have a law, and according to ^[b]our law He ought to die, because ^(G)He made Himself the Son of God.”

⁸ Therefore, when Pilate heard that saying, he was the more afraid, ⁹ and went again into the Praetorium, and said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” ^(H)But Jesus gave him no answer.

¹⁰ Then Pilate said to Him, “Are You not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have ^[c]power to crucify You, and power to release You?”

¹¹ Jesus answered, ^(I)“You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore ^(J)the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.”

¹² From then on Pilate sought to release Him, but the Jews cried out, saying, “If you let this Man go, you are not Caesar’s friend. ^(K)Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.”

^13 (L)When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus out and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. ¹⁴ Now ^(M)it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, and about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, “Behold your King!”

¹⁵ But they cried out, “Away with Him, away with Him! Crucify Him!”

Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?”

The chief priests answered, ^(N)“We have no king but Caesar!”

^16 (O)Then he delivered Him to them to be crucified. Then they took Jesus ^[d]and led Him away.

The King on a Cross^(P)

^17 (Q)And He, bearing His cross, ^(R)went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, ¹⁸ where they crucified Him, and ^(S)two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center. ^19 (T)Now Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. And the writing was:

JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

²⁰ Then many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.

²¹ Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but, ‘He said, “I am the King of the Jews.” ’ ”

²² Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

^23 (U)Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece. ²⁴ They said therefore among themselves, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says:

Therefore the soldiers did these things.

Behold Your Mother

^25 (W)Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of ^(X)Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. ²⁶ When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and ^(Y)the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, ^(Z)“Woman, behold your son!” ²⁷ Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her ^(AA)to his own home.

It Is Finished

²⁸ After this, Jesus, ^[e]knowing that all things were now accomplished, ^(AB)that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” ²⁹ Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and ^(AC)they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. ³⁰ So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, ^(AD)“It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.

Jesus’ Side Is Pierced

^31 (AE)Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day, ^(AF)that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a ^(AG)high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. ³² Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with Him. ³³ But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. ³⁴ But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately ^(AH)blood and water came out. ³⁵ And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is ^(AI)true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may ^(AJ)believe. ³⁶ For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, ^(AK)“Not one of His bones shall be broken.” ³⁷ And again another Scripture says, ^(AL)“They shall look on Him whom they pierced.”

Jesus Buried in Joseph’s Tomb^(AM)

^38 (AN)After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, ^(AO)for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took the body of Jesus. ³⁹ And ^(AP)Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of ^(AQ)myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. ⁴⁰ Then they took the body of Jesus, and ^(AR)bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. ⁴¹ Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. ⁴² So ^(AS)there they laid Jesus, ^(AT)because of the Jews’ Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.

The Empty Tomb^(AU)

20 Now the ^(AV)first day of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the ^(AW)stone had been taken away from the tomb. ² Then she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the ^(AX)other disciple, ^(AY)whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.”

^3 (AZ)Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and were going to the tomb. ⁴ So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first. ⁵ And he, stooping down and looking in, saw ^(BA)the linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in. ⁶ Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths lying there, ⁷ and ^(BB)the ^[f]handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself. ⁸ Then the ^(BC)other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed. ⁹ For as yet they did not ^[g]know the ^(BD)Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. ¹⁰ Then the disciples went away again to their own homes.

Mary Magdalene Sees the Risen Lord

^11 (BE)But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb. ¹² And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. ¹³ Then they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”

She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.”

^14 (BF)Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and ^(BG)did not know that it was Jesus. ¹⁵ Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?”

She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away.”

¹⁶ Jesus said to her, ^(BH)“Mary!”

She turned and said to ^[h]Him, “Rabboni!” (which is to say, Teacher).

¹⁷ Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ^(BI)ascended to My Father; but go to ^(BJ)My brethren and say to them, ^(BK)‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to ^(BL)My God and your God.’ ”

^18 (BM)Mary Magdalene came and told the ^[i]disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things to her.

The Apostles Commissioned^(BN)

^19 (BO)Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were ^[j]assembled, for ^(BP)fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, ^(BQ)“Peace be with you.” ²⁰ When He had said this, He ^(BR)showed them His hands and His side. ^(BS)Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.

²¹ So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! ^(BT)As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” ²² And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. ^23 (BU)If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

Seeing and Believing

²⁴ Now Thomas, ^(BV)called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. ²⁵ The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the Lord.”

So he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”

²⁶ And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, “Peace to you!” ²⁷ Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and ^(BW)reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be ^(BX)unbelieving, but believing.”

²⁸ And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”

²⁹ Jesus said to him, ^[k]“Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. ^(BY)Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

That You May Believe

³⁰ And ^(BZ)truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; ^31 (CA)but these are written that ^(CB)you may believe that Jesus ^(CC)is the Christ, the Son of God, ^(CD)and that believing you may have life in His name.

Breakfast by the Sea

21 After these things Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the ^(CE)Sea of Tiberias, and in this way He showed Himself: ² Simon Peter, ^(CF)Thomas called the Twin, ^(CG)Nathanael of ^(CH)Cana in Galilee, ^(CI)the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. ³ Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.”

They said to him, “We are going with you also.” They went out and ^[l]immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing. ⁴ But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples ^(CJ)did not know that it was Jesus. ⁵ Then ^(CK)Jesus said to them, “Children, have you any food?”

They answered Him, “No.”

⁶ And He said to them, ^(CL)“Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish.

⁷ Therefore ^(CM)that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it), and plunged into the sea. ⁸ But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits), dragging the net with fish. ⁹ Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread. ¹⁰ Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish which you have just caught.”

¹¹ Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken. ¹² Jesus said to them, ^(CN)“Come and eat breakfast.” Yet none of the disciples dared ask Him, “Who are You?”—knowing that it was the Lord. ¹³ Jesus then came and took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish.

¹⁴ This is now ^(CO)the third time Jesus showed Himself to His disciples after He was raised from the dead.

Jesus Restores Peter

¹⁵ So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of ^[m]Jonah, do you love Me more than these?”

He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I ^[n]love You.”

He said to him, ^(CP)“Feed My lambs.”

¹⁶ He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of ^[o]Jonah, do you love Me?”

He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I ^[p]love You.”

^(CQ)He said to him, “Tend My ^(CR)sheep.”

¹⁷ He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of ^[q]Jonah, do you ^[r]love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?”

And he said to Him, “Lord, ^(CS)You know all things; You know that I love You.”

Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep. ^18 (CT)Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.” ¹⁹ This He spoke, signifying ^(CU)by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, ^(CV)“Follow Me.”

The Beloved Disciple and His Book

²⁰ Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple ^(CW)whom Jesus loved following, ^(CX)who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?” ²¹ Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, “But Lord, what about this man?”

²² Jesus said to him, “If I ^[s]will that he remain ^(CY)till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.”

²³ Then this saying went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you?”

²⁴ This is the disciple who ^(CZ)testifies of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true.

^25 (DA)And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, ^(DB)I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.

1 The former account I made, O ^(A)Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, ^2 (B)until the day in which ^[a]He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit ^(C)had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen, ^3 (D)to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many ^[b]infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.

The Holy Spirit Promised

^4 (E)And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have ^(F)heard from Me; ^5 (G)for John truly baptized with water, ^(H)but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” ⁶ Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” ⁷ And He said to them, ^(I)“It is not for you to ^(J)know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. ^8 (K)But you shall receive power ^(L)when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and ^(M)you shall be ^[c]witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and ^(N)Samaria, and to the ^(O)end of the earth.”

Jesus Ascends to Heaven^(P)

^9 (Q)Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, ^(R)He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. ¹⁰ And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them ^(S)in white apparel, ¹¹ who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, ^(T)will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.”
