The Death of Jesus

45 Now from the sixth hour[a] there was darkness over all the land[b] until the ninth hour.[c] 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus (A)cried out with a loud voice, saying, (B)“Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 47 And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.” 48 And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with (C)sour wine, and put it on a reed and (D)gave it to him to drink. 49 But the others said, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.” 50 And Jesus (E)cried out again with a loud voice and (F)yielded up his spirit.

51 And behold, (G)the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And (H)the earth shook, and the rocks were split. 52 The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of (I)the saints (J)who had fallen asleep were raised, 53 and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into (K)the holy city and appeared to many. 54 (L)When the centurion and those who were with him, (M)keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, (N)“Truly this was the Son[d] of God!”

55 There were also (O)many women there, looking on (P)from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, (Q)ministering to him, 56 among whom were (R)Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph and (S)the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

Jesus Is Buried

57 (T)When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus. 58 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. 59 And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud 60 and (U)laid it in his own new tomb, (V)which he had cut in the rock. And he rolled (W)a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away. 61 Mary Magdalene and (X)the other Mary were there, sitting opposite the tomb.

The Guard at the Tomb

62 The next day, that is, after the day of (Y)Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate 63 and said, “Sir, we remember how (Z)that impostor said, while he was still alive, (AA)‘After three days I will rise.’ 64 Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, (AB)lest his disciples go and steal him away and tell the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last fraud will be worse than the first.” 65 Pilate said to them, “You have (AC)a guard[e] of soldiers. Go, make it as secure as you can.” 66 So they went and made the tomb secure by (AD)sealing the stone and setting a guard.

The Resurrection

28 (AE)Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and (AF)the other Mary went to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake, for (AG)an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. (AH)His appearance was like lightning, and (AI)his clothing white as snow. And for fear of him the guards trembled and (AJ)became like dead men. But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, (AK)as he said. Come, see the place where he[f] lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, (AL)he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.” So they departed quickly from the tomb (AM)with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. And behold, Jesus (AN)met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and (AO)took hold of his feet and (AP)worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; (AQ)go and tell (AR)my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”

The Report of the Guard

11 While they were going, behold, some of (AS)the guard went into the city and told the chief priests all that had taken place. 12 And when they had assembled with the elders and taken counsel, they gave a sufficient sum of money to the soldiers 13 and said, “Tell people, (AT)‘His disciples came by night and stole him away while we were asleep.’ 14 And if this comes to (AU)the governor's ears, we will (AV)satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.” 15 So they took the money and did as they were directed. And this story has been spread among the Jews (AW)to this day.

The Great Commission

16 Now the eleven disciples (AX)went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And when they saw him they (AY)worshiped him, but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, (AZ)“All authority (BA)in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 (BB)Go therefore and (BC)make disciples of (BD)all nations, (BE)baptizing them (BF)in[g] (BG)the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them (BH)to observe all that (BI)I have commanded you. And behold, (BJ)I am with you always, to (BK)the end of the age.”

John the Baptist Prepares the Way

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, (BL)the Son of God.[h]

(BM)As it is written in Isaiah the prophet,[i]

(BN)“Behold, I send my messenger before your face,
    who will prepare your way,
(BO)the voice of one crying in the wilderness:
(BP)‘Prepare[j] the way of the Lord,
    make his paths straight,’”

(BQ)John appeared, baptizing in (BR)the wilderness and proclaiming (BS)a baptism of (BT)repentance (BU)for the forgiveness of sins. And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, (BV)confessing their sins. Now John was (BW)clothed with camel's hair and (BX)wore a leather belt around his waist and ate (BY)locusts and (BZ)wild honey. And he preached, saying, (CA)“After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. (CB)I have baptized you with water, but (CC)he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

The Baptism of Jesus

(CD)In those days Jesus (CE)came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And when he came up out of the water, immediately he (CF)saw (CG)the heavens being torn open (CH)and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And (CI)a voice came from heaven, (CJ)“You are my beloved Son;[k] with you I am well pleased.”

The Temptation of Jesus

12 (CK)The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. 13 (CL)And he was in the wilderness forty days, being (CM)tempted by (CN)Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and (CO)the angels were ministering to him.

Jesus Begins His Ministry

14 (CP)Now after John was arrested, Jesus (CQ)came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, 15 and saying, (CR)“The time is fulfilled, and (CS)the kingdom of God is at hand;[l] (CT)repent and believe in the gospel.”

Jesus Calls the First Disciples

16 (CU)Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become (CV)fishers of men.”[m] 18 And immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19 And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20 And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him.

Jesus Heals a Man with an Unclean Spirit

21 (CW)And they went into Capernaum, and immediately (CX)on the Sabbath (CY)he entered the synagogue and was teaching. 22 And (CZ)they were astonished at his teaching, (DA)for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes. 23 And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, 24 (DB)“What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? (DC)I know who you are—(DD)the Holy One of God.” 25 But Jesus (DE)rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” 26 And the unclean spirit, (DF)convulsing him and (DG)crying out with a loud voice, came out of him. 27 And they were all (DH)amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? (DI)A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” 28 And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.

Jesus Heals Many

29 (DJ)And immediately he[n] (DK)left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30 Now (DL)Simon's mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her. 31 And he came and (DM)took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them.

32 That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or (DN)oppressed by demons. 33 And the whole city was gathered together at the door. 34 (DO)And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And (DP)he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.

Jesus Preaches in Galilee

35 (DQ)And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and (DR)there he prayed. 36 And Simon and those who were with him searched for him, 37 and they found him and said to him, (DS)“Everyone is looking for you.” 38 And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for (DT)that is why I came out.” 39 (DU)And (DV)he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons.

Jesus Cleanses a Leper

40 (DW)And a leper[o] came to him, imploring him, and (DX)kneeling said to him, (DY)“If you will, you can make me clean.” 41 Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean.” 42 And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean. 43 And (DZ)Jesus[p] sternly charged him and sent him away at once, 44 and said to him, (EA)“See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, (EB)show yourself to the priest and (EC)offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, (ED)for a proof to them.” 45 (EE)But he went out and began to talk freely about it, and to spread the news, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter (EF)a town, but was out in (EG)desolate places, and (EH)people were coming to him from every quarter.
