16 At that time there was a man in prison who was known to be very bad. His name was Barabbas.[a] 17 All the people gathered at Pilate’s house. Pilate said, “Which man do you want me to free: Barabbas,[b] or Jesus who is called the Christ?” 18 Pilate knew that they gave Jesus to him because they were jealous.

New International Version
16 At that time they had a well-known prisoner whose name was Jesus[a] Barabbas. 17 So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah?”(A) 18 For he knew it was out of self-interest that they had handed Jesus over to him.
