Gethsemane(A)

36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee(B) along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow(C) to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”(D)

39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup(E) be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”(F)

40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me(G) for one hour?” he asked Peter. 41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.(H) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

42 He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”(I)

43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.

45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour(J) has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

Jesus Arrested(K)

47 While he was still speaking, Judas,(L) one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” 49 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!”(M) and kissed him.

50 Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, friend.”[a](N)

Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. 51 With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword,(O) drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.(P)

52 “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.(Q) 53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?(R) 54 But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled(S) that say it must happen in this way?”

55 In that hour Jesus said to the crowd, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching,(T) and you did not arrest me. 56 But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.”(U) Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.

  1. Matthew 26:50 Or “Why have you come, friend?”

13 and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas,(A) the high priest that year. 14 Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.(B)

Peter’s First Denial(C)

15 Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest,(D) he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard,(E) 16 but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant girl on duty there and brought Peter in.

17 “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?” she asked Peter.

He replied, “I am not.”(F)

18 It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire(G) they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.(H)

The High Priest Questions Jesus(I)

19 Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.

20 “I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus replied. “I always taught in synagogues(J) or at the temple,(K) where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.(L) 21 Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.”

22 When Jesus said this, one of the officials(M) nearby slapped him in the face.(N) “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded.

23 “If I said something wrong,” Jesus replied, “testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?”(O) 24 Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas(P) the high priest.

Peter’s Second and Third Denials(Q)

25 Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself.(R) So they asked him, “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?”

He denied it, saying, “I am not.”(S)

26 One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off,(T) challenged him, “Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?”(U) 27 Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.(V)

Jesus Before Pilate(W)

28 Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor.(X) By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace,(Y) because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.(Z) 29 So Pilate came out to them and asked, “What charges are you bringing against this man?”

30 “If he were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed him over to you.”

31 Pilate said, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.”

“But we have no right to execute anyone,” they objected. 32 This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.(AA)

33 Pilate then went back inside the palace,(AB) summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”(AC)

34 “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”

35 “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”

36 Jesus said, “My kingdom(AD) is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders.(AE) But now my kingdom is from another place.”(AF)

37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate.

Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth.(AG) Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”(AH)

38 “What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.(AI) 39 But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”

40 They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.(AJ)

Jesus Sentenced to Be Crucified(AK)

19 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.(AL) The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!”(AM) And they slapped him in the face.(AN)

Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, “Look, I am bringing him out(AO) to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.”(AP) When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe,(AQ) Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”

As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!”

But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him.(AR) As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.”(AS)

The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die,(AT) because he claimed to be the Son of God.”(AU)

When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, and he went back inside the palace.(AV) “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer.(AW) 10 “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”

11 Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.(AX) Therefore the one who handed me over to you(AY) is guilty of a greater sin.”

12 From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king(AZ) opposes Caesar.”

13 When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat(BA) at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic(BB) is Gabbatha). 14 It was the day of Preparation(BC) of the Passover; it was about noon.(BD)

“Here is your king,”(BE) Pilate said to the Jews.

15 But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!”

“Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked.

“We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.

16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.(BF)

The Crucifixion of Jesus(BG)

So the soldiers took charge of Jesus.

The Crucifixion of Jesus(A)

26 As the soldiers led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene,(B) who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.(C) 27 A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed(D) for him. 28 Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children.(E) 29 For the time will come when you will say, ‘Blessed are the childless women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’(F) 30 Then

“‘they will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!”
and to the hills, “Cover us!”’[a](G)

31 For if people do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”(H)

32 Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed.(I) 33 When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. 34 Jesus said, “Father,(J) forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”[b](K) And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.(L)

35 The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him.(M) They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”(N)

36 The soldiers also came up and mocked him.(O) They offered him wine vinegar(P) 37 and said, “If you are the king of the Jews,(Q) save yourself.”

38 There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the jews.(R)

39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”(S)

40 But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”(T)

42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.[c](U)

43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”(V)

The Death of Jesus(W)

44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon,(X) 45 for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple(Y) was torn in two.(Z) 46 Jesus called out with a loud voice,(AA) “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”[d](AB) When he had said this, he breathed his last.(AC)

47 The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God(AD) and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.” 48 When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts(AE) and went away. 49 But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee,(AF) stood at a distance,(AG) watching these things.

The Burial of Jesus(A)

42 It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath).(B) So as evening approached, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council,(C) who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God,(D) went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. 44 Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died. 45 When he learned from the centurion(E) that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph. 46 So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.(F) 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph(G) saw where he was laid.
