²⁵ But Jesus called them to him and said, ^(A)“You know that the rulers of the Gentiles ^(B)lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. ^26 (C)It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant,^[a]

²⁷ and whoever would be first among you must be your slave,^{[a] 28} even as the Son of Man came not to be served but ^(A)to serve, and ^(B)to give his life as a ransom for ^(C)many.”

³ Jesus, knowing ^(A)that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that ^(B)he had come from God and ^(C)was going back to God, ⁴ rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, ^(D)tied it around his waist. ⁵ Then he ^(E)poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

¹² When he had washed their feet and ^(A)put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, ^(B)“Do you understand what I have done to you? ^13 (C)You call me ^(D)Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. ¹⁴ If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, ^(E)you also ought to wash one another's feet. ¹⁵ For I have given you an example, ^(F)that you also should do just as I have done to you.

^2 (A)shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight,^{[a] (B)}not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you;^{[b] (C)}not for shameful gain, but eagerly; ³ not ^(D)domineering over those in your charge, but ^(E)being examples to the flock. ⁴ And when ^(F)the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the ^(G)unfading ^(H)crown of glory.

³ Do nothing from ^(A)selfish ambition or ^(B)conceit, but in ^(C)humility count others more significant than yourselves. ⁴ Let each of you ^(D)look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. ^5 (E)Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,^{[a] 6 (F)}who, though he was in ^(G)the form of God, did not count equality with God ^(H)a thing to be grasped,^{[b] 7} but ^(I)emptied himself, by taking the form of a ^(J)servant,^{[c] (K)}being born in the likeness of men. ⁸ And being found in human form, he humbled himself by ^(L)becoming obedient to the point of death, ^(M)even death on a cross.

⁵ Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. ^(A)Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for ^(B)“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

^6 (C)Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, ^7 (D)casting all your anxieties on him, because ^(E)he cares for you.

^30 (A)He must increase, but I must decrease.”^[a]

²¹ So we labored at the work, and half of them held the spears from the break of dawn until the stars came out. ²² I also said to the people at that time, “Let every man and his servant pass the night within Jerusalem, that they may be a guard for us by night and may labor by day.” ²³ So neither I nor my brothers nor my servants nor the men of the guard who followed me, none of us took off our clothes; ^(A)each kept his weapon at his right hand.^[a]
