36 But I tell you that for every [a]careless word that people [b]speak, they will give an account of it on the (A)day of judgment. 37 For [c]by your words you will be justified, and [d]by your words you will be condemned.”

The Desire for Signs

38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Him, “Teacher, (B)we want to see a [e]sign from You.” 39 But He answered and said to them, (C)An evil and adulterous generation craves a [f]sign; and so no [g]sign will be given to it except the [h]sign of Jonah the prophet; 40 for just as (D)Jonah was in the stomach of the sea monster for three days and three nights, so will (E)the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth for (F)three days and three nights. 41 (G)The men of Nineveh will stand up with this generation at the judgment, and will condemn it because (H)they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, something (I)greater than Jonah is here. 42 (J)The Queen of the South will rise up with this generation at the judgment and will condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, something (K)greater than Solomon is here.

43 (L)Now when the unclean spirit comes out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and does not find it. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came’; and when it comes, it finds it unoccupied, swept, and put in order. 45 Then it goes and brings along with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they come in and live there; and (M)the last condition of that person becomes worse than the first. That is the way it will also be with this evil generation.”

Changed Relationships

46 (N)While He was still speaking to the crowds, behold, His (O)mother and (P)brothers were standing outside, seeking to speak to Him. 47 [[i]Someone said to Him, “Look, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, seeking to speak to You.”] 48 But [j]Jesus replied to the one who was telling Him and said, “Who is My mother, and who are My brothers?” 49 And extending His hand toward His disciples, He said, “Behold: My mother and My brothers! 50 For whoever does the will of My Father who is in heaven, he is My brother, and sister, and mother.”

36 But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. 37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”(A)

The Sign of Jonah(B)(C)

38 Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign(D) from you.”(E)

39 He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.(F) 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish,(G) so the Son of Man(H) will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.(I) 41 The men of Nineveh(J) will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah,(K) and now something greater than Jonah is here. 42 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came(L) from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now something greater than Solomon is here.

43 “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. 45 Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first.(M) That is how it will be with this wicked generation.”

Jesus’ Mother and Brothers(N)

46 While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother(O) and brothers(P) stood outside, wanting to speak to him. 47 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”

48 He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven(Q) is my brother and sister and mother.”

18 But (A)the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and those things defile the person. 19 (B)For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, acts of adultery, other immoral sexual acts, thefts, false testimonies, and [a]slanderous statements. 20 These are the things that defile the person; but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile the person.”

The Faith of a Canaanite Woman

21 (C)Jesus went away from there, and withdrew into the region of (D)Tyre and (E)Sidon. 22 And a Canaanite woman from that region came out and began to cry out, saying, “Have mercy on me, Lord, (F)Son of David; my daughter is severely (G)demon-possessed.” 23 But He did not answer her with even a word. And His disciples came up and urged Him, saying, “Send her away, because she keeps shouting [b]at us!” 24 But He answered and said, “I was sent only to (H)the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 25 But she came and (I)began [c]to bow down before Him, saying, “Lord, help me!” 26 Yet He answered and said, “It is not [d]good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” 27 And she said, “Yes, Lord; but please help, for even the dogs feed on the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” 28 Then Jesus said to her, “O woman, (J)your faith is great; it shall be done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed [e]at once.

Healing Crowds

29 (K)Departing from there, Jesus went along (L)the Sea of Galilee, and after going up on the mountain, He was sitting there. 30 And [f]large crowds came to Him bringing with them those who were limping, had impaired limbs, were blind, or were unable to speak, and many others, and they laid them down at His feet; and (M)He healed them. 31 So the crowd was astonished as they saw those who were unable to speak talking, those with impaired limbs [g]restored, those who were limping walking around, and those who were blind seeing; and they (N)glorified the God of Israel.

Four Thousand Men Fed

32 (O)Now Jesus called His disciples to Him and said, (P)I feel compassion for the [h]people, because they [i]have remained with Me now for three days and have nothing to eat; and I do not want to send them away hungry, for they might faint on the way.” 33 The disciples *said to Him, “Where would we get so many loaves in this desolate place to satisfy such a large crowd?” 34 And Jesus *said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven, and a few small fish.” 35 And He directed the [j]people to [k]sit down on the ground; 36 and He took the seven loaves and the fish; and after (Q)giving thanks, He broke them and started giving them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 37 And they all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up what was left over of the broken pieces, seven large (R)baskets full. 38 And those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children.

39 And sending away the crowds, Jesus got into (S)the boat and came to the region of (T)Magadan.

18 But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart,(A) and these defile them. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.(B) 20 These are what defile a person;(C) but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.”

The Faith of a Canaanite Woman(D)

21 Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon.(E) 22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David,(F) have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.”(G)

23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.”

24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.”(H)

25 The woman came and knelt before him.(I) “Lord, help me!” she said.

26 He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”

27 “Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”

28 Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith!(J) Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.

Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand(K)(L)(M)

29 Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a mountainside and sat down. 30 Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them.(N) 31 The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel.(O)

32 Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion for these people;(P) they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way.”

33 His disciples answered, “Where could we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd?”

34 “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked.

“Seven,” they replied, “and a few small fish.”

35 He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. 36 Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and when he had given thanks, he broke them(Q) and gave them to the disciples, and they in turn to the people. 37 They all ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.(R) 38 The number of those who ate was four thousand men, besides women and children. 39 After Jesus had sent the crowd away, he got into the boat and went to the vicinity of Magadan.
