² “The teachers of the law^(A) and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. ³ So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach.

¹⁸ Whoever believes in him is not condemned,^(A) but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.^{(B) 19} This is the verdict: Light^(C) has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.^(D)

²⁴ I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he,^(A) you will indeed die in your sins.”

³⁹ “Abraham is our father,” they answered.

“If you were Abraham’s children,”^(A) said Jesus, “then you would^[a] do what Abraham did.

⁶ And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him^(A) must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
