The Sign of Jonah^(A)(B)

³⁸ Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign^(C) from you.”^(D)

³⁹ He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.^(E)

⁵⁸ This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”^{(A) 59} He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

Many Disciples Desert Jesus

⁶⁰ On hearing it, many of his disciples^(B) said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”^(C)

⁶¹ Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you?^{(D) 62} Then what if you see the Son of Man^(E) ascend to where he was before!^{(F) 63} The Spirit gives life;^(G) the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit^[a] and life. ⁶⁴ Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known^(H) from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him.^(I)

²⁷ God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us.^{(A) 28} ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’^[a](B) As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’^[b]

²⁹ “Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by human design and skill.^{(C) 30} In the past God overlooked^(D) such ignorance,^(E) but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.^{(F) 31} For he has set a day when he will judge^(G) the world with justice^(H) by the man he has appointed.^(I) He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.”^(J)

¹⁶ The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit^(A) that we are God’s children.^(B)

²² Jews demand signs^(A) and Greeks look for wisdom, ²³ but we preach Christ crucified:^(B) a stumbling block^(C) to Jews and foolishness^(D) to Gentiles,

¹² In him and through faith in him we may approach God^(A) with freedom and confidence.^(B)

Faith in Action

11 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for^(A) and assurance about what we do not see.^(B)
