A Paralyzed Man Healed

Getting into a boat, Jesus crossed over the Sea of Galilee and came to (A)His own city.

(B)And they brought to Him a (C)paralyzed man lying on a stretcher. And seeing their faith, Jesus said to the man who was paralyzed, (D)Take courage, [a]son; (E)your sins are forgiven.” And some of the scribes said [b]to themselves, “This man is (F)blaspheming!” And Jesus, (G)perceiving their thoughts, said, “Why are you thinking evil in your hearts? For which is easier, to say, ‘(H)Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? But so that you may know that (I)the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—then He *said to the (J)paralyzed man, “Get up, pick up your stretcher and go home.” And he got up and [c]went home. But when the crowds saw this, they were [d]awestruck, and they (K)glorified God, who had given such authority to men.

Matthew Called

(L)As Jesus went on from there, He saw a man called (M)Matthew sitting in the tax collector’s office; and He *said to him, (N)Follow Me!” And he got up and followed Him.

10 Then it happened that as [e]Jesus was reclining at the table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and [f]sinners came and began dining with Jesus and His disciples. 11 And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to His disciples, “(O)Why is your Teacher eating with the tax collectors and sinners?” 12 But when Jesus heard this, He said, It is not (P)those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick. 13 Now go and learn [g](Q)what this means: ‘(R)I desire [h]compassion, [i]rather than sacrifice,’ for (S)I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

The Question about Fasting

14 Then the disciples of John *came to Him, asking, “Why do we and (T)the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?” 15 And Jesus said to them, “The [j]attendants of the groom cannot mourn as long as the groom is with them, can they? But the days will come when the groom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. 16 But no one puts a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for [k]the patch pulls away from the garment, and a worse tear results. 17 Nor do people put new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wineskins burst, and the wine pours out and the wineskins are ruined; but they put new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.”

Miracles of Healing

18 (U)While He was saying these things to them, behold, [l]a synagogue [m]official came and [n](V)bowed down before Him, and said, “My daughter has just died; but come and lay Your hand on her, and she will become alive again.” 19 Jesus got up from the table and began to accompany him, along with His disciples.

20 And behold, a woman who had been suffering from a hemorrhage for twelve years came up behind Him, and touched (W)the [o]border of His [p]cloak; 21 for she was [q]saying [r]to herself, “If I only (X)touch His cloak, I will [s]get well.” 22 But Jesus, turning and seeing her, said, “Daughter, (Y)take courage; (Z)your faith has [t]made you well.” And [u]at once the woman was [v]made well.

23 When Jesus came into the [w]official’s house and saw (AA)the flute players and the crowd in noisy disorder, 24 He said, “Leave; for the girl (AB)has not died, but is asleep.” And they began laughing at Him. 25 But (AC)when the crowd had been sent out, He entered and (AD)took her by the hand, and the girl [x]got up. 26 And (AE)this news spread throughout that land.

27 As Jesus went on from there, two men who were blind followed Him, crying out, “Have mercy on us, (AF)Son of David!” 28 And after He entered the house, the men who were blind came up to Him, and Jesus *said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They *said to Him, “Yes, Lord.” 29 Then He touched their eyes, saying, [y]It shall be done for you (AG)according to your faith.” 30 And their eyes were opened. And Jesus (AH)sternly warned them, saying, “See that no one knows about this!” 31 But they went out and (AI)spread the news about Him throughout that land.

32 And as they were going out, behold, (AJ)a (AK)demon-possessed man who was unable to speak [z]was brought to Him. 33 And after the demon was cast out, the man who was previously unable to speak talked; and the crowds were amazed, and were saying, “(AL)Nothing like this has ever [aa]been seen in Israel.” 34 But the Pharisees were saying, “He (AM)casts out the demons by the ruler of the demons.”

35 Jesus was going through all the cities and villages, (AN)teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness.

36 (AO)Seeing the crowds, He felt compassion for them, (AP)because they were [ab]distressed and downcast, like sheep [ac]without a shepherd. 37 Then He *said to His disciples, (AQ)The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. 38 Therefore, plead with the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.”

The Twelve Disciples; Instructions for Service

10 Jesus (AR)summoned His twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to (AS)heal every disease and every sickness.

(AT)Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: The first, (AU)Simon, who is called Peter, and his brother (AV)Andrew; and [ad](AW)James the son of Zebedee, and his brother [ae]John; (AX)Philip and [af]Bartholomew; (AY)Thomas and (AZ)Matthew the tax collector; [ag](BA)James the son of Alphaeus, and (BB)Thaddaeus; Simon the [ah]Zealot, and (BC)Judas Iscariot, the one who also betrayed Him.

(BD)These twelve Jesus sent out after instructing them, saying, “Do not go on a road [ai]to Gentiles, and do not enter a city of (BE)Samaritans; but rather go to (BF)the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And as you go, [aj]preach, saying, ‘(BG)The kingdom of heaven [ak]has come near.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those with leprosy, cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give. (BH)Do not acquire gold, or silver, or copper for your money belts, 10 or a [al]bag for your journey, or even two [am]tunics, or sandals, or a staff; for (BI)the worker is deserving of his [an]support. 11 And whatever city or village you enter, inquire who is worthy in it, and stay [ao]at his house until you leave that city. 12 As you enter the [ap]house, (BJ)give it your [aq]greeting. 13 If the house is worthy, see that your blessing of peace comes upon it. But if it is not worthy, [ar]take back your blessing of peace. 14 And whoever does not receive you nor listen to your words, as you leave that house or city, (BK)shake the dust off your feet. 15 Truly I say to you, (BL)it will be more tolerable for the land of (BM)Sodom and Gomorrah on (BN)the day of judgment, than for that city.

A Hard Road Ahead of Them

16 (BO)Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be as (BP)wary as serpents, and as (BQ)innocent as doves. 17 But be on guard against people, for they will hand you over to the (BR)courts and flog you (BS)in their synagogues; 18 and you will even be brought before governors and kings on My account, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. 19 (BT)But when they hand you over, (BU)do not worry about how or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given you in that hour. 20 For (BV)it is not you who are speaking, but it is the Spirit of your Father who is speaking [as]in you.

21 “Now (BW)brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and (BX)children will rise up against parents and [at]cause them to be put to death. 22 And (BY)you will be hated by all because of My name, but (BZ)it is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved.

23 “But whenever they (CA)persecute you in [au]one city, flee to the [av]next; for truly I say to you, you will not finish going through the cities of Israel (CB)until the Son of Man comes.

The Meaning of Discipleship

24 (CC)A [aw]disciple is not above his teacher, nor a slave above his master. 25 It is enough for the disciple that he may become like his teacher, and the slave like his master. (CD)If they have called the head of the house [ax](CE)Beelzebul, how much more will they insult the members of his household!

26 “So do not (CF)fear them, (CG)for there is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. 27 (CH)What I tell you in the darkness, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered in your ear, proclaim (CI)on the housetops. 28 And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather (CJ)fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in [ay](CK)hell. 29 (CL)Are two sparrows not sold for an [az]assarion? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30 But (CM)even the hairs of your head are all counted. 31 So do not fear; (CN)you are more valuable than a great number of sparrows.

32 “Therefore, (CO)everyone who [ba]confesses Me before people, I will also confess [bb]him before My Father who is in heaven. 33 But (CP)whoever denies Me before people, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven.

34 (CQ)Do not think that I came to [bc]bring peace on the earth; I did not come to [bd]bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I came to (CR)turn a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; 36 and (CS)a persons enemies will be the members of his household.

37 (CT)The one who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and the one who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. 38 And (CU)the one who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. 39 (CV)The one who has found his [be]life will lose it, and the one who has lost his [bf]life on My account will find it.

The Reward for Service

40 (CW)The one who [bg]receives you [bh]receives Me, and (CX)the one who [bi]receives Me [bj]receives Him who sent Me. 41 (CY)The one who [bk]receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward; and the one who [bl]receives a righteous person in the name of a righteous person shall receive a righteous person’s reward. 42 And (CZ)whoever gives one of these [bm]little ones just a cup of cold water to drink in the name of a disciple, truly I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.”

John’s Questions

11 (DA)When Jesus had finished [bn]giving instructions to His twelve disciples, He went on from there (DB)to teach and [bo]preach in their cities.

(DC)Now while in prison, (DD)John heard about the works of Christ, and he sent word by his disciples, and said to Him, “Are You (DE)the Coming One, or are we to [bp]look for someone else?” Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and report to John what you hear and see: (DF)those who are blind receive sight and those who limp walk, those with leprosy are cleansed and those who are deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the (DG)poor have the [bq]gospel preached to them. And blessed is [br]any person who (DH)does not [bs]take offense at Me.”

Jesus’ Tribute to John

As these disciples of John were going away, Jesus began speaking to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into (DI)the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? [bt]But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ [bu]palaces! [bv]But what did you go out to see? (DJ)A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and one who is more than a prophet. 10 This is the one about whom it [bw]is written:

(DK)Behold, I am sending My messenger [bx]ahead of You,
Who will prepare Your way before You.’

11 Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist! Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 And (DL)from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has been treated violently, and violent men take it by force. 13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. 14 And if you are willing to accept it, John himself is (DM)Elijah who [by]was to come. 15 (DN)The one who has ears to hear, [bz]let him hear.

16 “But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces, who call out to the other children, 17 and say, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a song of mourning, and you did not [ca]mourn.’ 18 For John came neither (DO)eating nor (DP)drinking, and they say, ‘(DQ)He has a demon!’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a [cb]heavy drinker, (DR)a friend of tax collectors and [cc]sinners!’ And yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”

The Unrepenting Cities

20 Then He began to reprimand the cities in which most of His [cd](DS)miracles were done, because they did not repent. 21 (DT)Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, (DU)Bethsaida! For if the [ce]miracles that occurred in you had occurred in (DV)Tyre and (DW)Sidon, they would have repented long ago in [cf](DX)sackcloth and ashes. 22 Nevertheless I say to you, (DY)it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon on (DZ)the day of judgment than for you. 23 And you, (EA)Capernaum, will not be exalted to heaven, will you? You will be (EB)brought down to (EC)Hades! For if the [cg]miracles that occurred in you had occurred in (ED)Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24 Nevertheless I say to you that (EE)it will be more tolerable for the land of (EF)Sodom on the day of judgment, than for you.”

Come to Me

25 [ch](EG)At that time Jesus said, “I praise You, (EH)Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that (EI)You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent, and have revealed them to infants. 26 Yes, (EJ)Father, for this way was well pleasing in Your sight. 27 (EK)All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father (EL)except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son determines to reveal Him.

28 (EM)Come to Me, all [ci]who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and (EN)learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and (EO)you will find [cj]rest for your souls. 30 For (EP)My yoke is comfortable, and My burden is light.”

Sabbath Questions

12 [ck](EQ)At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath, and His disciples became hungry and began to (ER)pick the heads of grain and eat. Now when the Pharisees saw this, they said to Him, “Look, Your disciples are doing what (ES)is not lawful to do on a Sabbath!” But He said to them, “Have you not read what David did when he became hungry, he and his companions— how he entered the house of God, and (ET)they ate the [cl]consecrated bread, which was not lawful for him to eat nor for those with him, but for the priests alone? Lord of the Sabbath

For (EW)the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

(EX)Departing from there, He went into their synagogue. 10 And a man was there whose hand was withered. And they questioned [cr]Jesus, asking, “(EY)Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”—so that they might bring charges against Him. 11 But He said to them, (EZ)What man [cs]is there among you who [ct]has a sheep, and if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will he not take hold of it and lift it out? 12 (FA)How much more valuable then is a person than a sheep! The Pharisees Rebuked

22 (FM)Then a (FN)demon-possessed man who was blind and unable to speak was brought to [dh]Jesus, and He healed him so that the man who was unable to speak talked and [di]could see. 23 And all the crowds were amazed and were saying, “This man cannot be the (FO)Son of David, can he?” 24 But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, “This man (FP)casts out demons only by [dj]Beelzebul the ruler of the demons.”

25 (FQ)And (FR)knowing their thoughts, Jesus said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste; and no city or house divided against itself will stand. 26 And if (FS)Satan is casting out Satan, he [dk]has become divided against himself; how then will his kingdom stand? 27 And if (FT)by [dl]Beelzebul I cast out the demons, (FU)by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore, they will be your judges. 28 But (FV)if I cast out the demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. 29 Or, how can anyone enter the strong man’s house and carry off his property, unless he first ties up the strong man? And then he will plunder his house.

The Unpardonable Sin

30 (FW)The one who is not with Me is against Me; and the one who does not gather with Me scatters.

31 (FX)Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven people, but blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven. 32 (FY)And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in (FZ)this age or in the age to come.

The Desire for Signs

38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Him, “Teacher, (GF)we want to see a [dt]sign from You.” 39 But He answered and said to them, (GG)An evil and adulterous generation craves a [du]sign; and so no [dv]sign will be given to it except the [dw]sign of Jonah the prophet; 40 for just as (GH)Jonah was in the stomach of the sea monster for three days and three nights, so will (GI)the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth for (GJ)three days and three nights. 41 (GK)The men of Nineveh will stand up with this generation at the judgment, and will condemn it because (GL)they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, something (GM)greater than Jonah is here. 42 (GN)The Queen of the South will rise up with this generation at the judgment and will condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, something (GO)greater than Solomon is here.

43 (GP)Now when the unclean spirit comes out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and does not find it. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came’; and when it comes, it finds it unoccupied, swept, and put in order. 45 Then it goes and brings along with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they come in and live there; and (GQ)the last condition of that person becomes worse than the first. That is the way it will also be with this evil generation.”

Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man(A)

Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town.(B) Some men brought to him a paralyzed man,(C) lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith,(D) he said to the man, “Take heart,(E) son; your sins are forgiven.”(F)

At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, “This fellow is blaspheming!”(G)

Knowing their thoughts,(H) Jesus said, “Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts? Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? But I want you to know that the Son of Man(I) has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “Get up, take your mat and go home.” Then the man got up and went home. When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God,(J) who had given such authority to man.

The Calling of Matthew(K)

As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,”(L) he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.

10 While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples. 11 When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”(M)

12 On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 13 But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’[a](N) For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”(O)

Jesus Questioned About Fasting(P)

14 Then John’s(Q) disciples came and asked him, “How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often,(R) but your disciples do not fast?”

15 Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them?(S) The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.(T)

16 “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse. 17 Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”

Jesus Raises a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman(U)

18 While he was saying this, a synagogue leader came and knelt before him(V) and said, “My daughter has just died. But come and put your hand on her,(W) and she will live.” 19 Jesus got up and went with him, and so did his disciples.

20 Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak.(X) 21 She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.”

22 Jesus turned and saw her. “Take heart,(Y) daughter,” he said, “your faith has healed you.”(Z) And the woman was healed at that moment.(AA)

23 When Jesus entered the synagogue leader’s house and saw the noisy crowd and people playing pipes,(AB) 24 he said, “Go away. The girl is not dead(AC) but asleep.”(AD) But they laughed at him. 25 After the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took the girl by the hand, and she got up.(AE) 26 News of this spread through all that region.(AF)

Jesus Heals the Blind and the Mute

27 As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, calling out, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!”(AG)

28 When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”

“Yes, Lord,” they replied.(AH)

29 Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith let it be done to you”;(AI) 30 and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, “See that no one knows about this.”(AJ) 31 But they went out and spread the news about him all over that region.(AK)

32 While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed(AL) and could not talk(AM) was brought to Jesus. 33 And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.”(AN)

34 But the Pharisees said, “It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons.”(AO)

The Workers Are Few

35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.(AP) 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them,(AQ) because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.(AR) 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest(AS) is plentiful but the workers are few.(AT) 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve(AU)(AV)(AW)(AX)(AY)

10 Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits(AZ) and to heal every disease and sickness.(BA)

These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.(BB)

These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans.(BC) Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel.(BD) As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven(BE) has come near.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy,[b] drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.

“Do not get any gold or silver or copper to take with you in your belts(BF) 10 no bag for the journey or extra shirt or sandals or a staff, for the worker is worth his keep.(BG) 11 Whatever town or village you enter, search there for some worthy person and stay at their house until you leave. 12 As you enter the home, give it your greeting.(BH) 13 If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you. 14 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet.(BI) 15 Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah(BJ) on the day of judgment(BK) than for that town.(BL)

16 “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves.(BM) Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.(BN) 17 Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils(BO) and be flogged in the synagogues.(BP) 18 On my account you will be brought before governors and kings(BQ) as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. 19 But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it.(BR) At that time you will be given what to say, 20 for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father(BS) speaking through you.

21 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents(BT) and have them put to death.(BU) 22 You will be hated by everyone because of me,(BV) but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.(BW) 23 When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. Truly I tell you, you will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.(BX)

24 “The student is not above the teacher, nor a servant above his master.(BY) 25 It is enough for students to be like their teachers, and servants like their masters. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul,(BZ) how much more the members of his household!

26 “So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.(CA) 27 What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. 28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One(CB) who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care.[c] 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.(CC) 31 So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.(CD)

32 “Whoever acknowledges me before others,(CE) I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. 33 But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.(CF)

34 “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to turn

“‘a man against his father,
    a daughter against her mother,
a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law(CG)
36     a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’[d](CH)

37 “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.(CI) 38 Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me.(CJ) 39 Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.(CK)

40 “Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me,(CL) and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.(CM) 41 Whoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. 42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.”(CN)

Jesus and John the Baptist(CO)

11 After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples,(CP) he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee.[e]

When John,(CQ) who was in prison,(CR) heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come,(CS) or should we expect someone else?”

Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy[f] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.(CT) Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”(CU)

As John’s(CV) disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness(CW) to see? A reed swayed by the wind? If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces. Then what did you go out to see? A prophet?(CX) Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is the one about whom it is written:

“‘I will send my messenger ahead of you,(CY)
    who will prepare your way before you.’[g](CZ)

11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence,[h] and violent people have been raiding it. 13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.(DA) 14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.(DB) 15 Whoever has ears, let them hear.(DC)

16 “To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:

17 “‘We played the pipe for you,
    and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
    and you did not mourn.’

18 For John came neither eating(DD) nor drinking,(DE) and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’(DF) But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.”

Woe on Unrepentant Towns(DG)

20 Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida!(DH) For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon,(DI) they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.(DJ) 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.(DK) 23 And you, Capernaum,(DL) will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.[i](DM) For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24 But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”(DN)

The Father Revealed in the Son(DO)

25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father,(DP) Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.(DQ) 26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.

27 “All things have been committed to me(DR) by my Father.(DS) No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.(DT)

28 “Come to me,(DU) all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.(DV) 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,(DW) for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.(DX) 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”(DY)

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath(DZ)(EA)

12 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain(EB) and eat them. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath.”(EC)

He answered, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?(ED) He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread—which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests.(EE) Or haven’t you read in the Law that the priests on Sabbath duty in the temple desecrate the Sabbath(EF) and yet are innocent? I tell you that something greater than the temple is here.(EG) If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’[j](EH) you would not have condemned the innocent. For the Son of Man(EI) is Lord of the Sabbath.”

Going on from that place, he went into their synagogue, 10 and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Looking for a reason to bring charges against Jesus,(EJ) they asked him, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”(EK)

11 He said to them, “If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out?(EL) 12 How much more valuable is a person than a sheep!(EM) Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”

13 Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” So he stretched it out and it was completely restored, just as sound as the other. 14 But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus.(EN)

God’s Chosen Servant

15 Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. A large crowd followed him, and he healed all who were ill.(EO) 16 He warned them not to tell others about him.(EP) 17 This was to fulfill(EQ) what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:

18 “Here is my servant whom I have chosen,
    the one I love, in whom I delight;(ER)
I will put my Spirit on him,(ES)
    and he will proclaim justice to the nations.
19 He will not quarrel or cry out;
    no one will hear his voice in the streets.
20 A bruised reed he will not break,
    and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out,
till he has brought justice through to victory.
21     In his name the nations will put their hope.”[k](ET)

Jesus and Beelzebul(EU)

22 Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see.(EV) 23 All the people were astonished and said, “Could this be the Son of David?”(EW)

24 But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, “It is only by Beelzebul,(EX) the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons.”(EY)

25 Jesus knew their thoughts(EZ) and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. 26 If Satan(FA) drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? 27 And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul,(FB) by whom do your people(FC) drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. 28 But if it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God(FD) has come upon you.

29 “Or again, how can anyone enter a strong man’s house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can plunder his house.

30 “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.(FE) 31 And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.(FF) 32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age(FG) or in the age to come.(FH)

33 “Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit.(FI) 34 You brood of vipers,(FJ) how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks(FK) what the heart is full of. 35 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. 36 But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. 37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”(FL)

The Sign of Jonah(FM)(FN)

38 Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign(FO) from you.”(FP)

39 He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.(FQ) 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish,(FR) so the Son of Man(FS) will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.(FT) 41 The men of Nineveh(FU) will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah,(FV) and now something greater than Jonah is here. 42 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came(FW) from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now something greater than Solomon is here.

43 “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. 45 Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first.(FX) That is how it will be with this wicked generation.”

Jesus’ Mother and Brothers(FY)

46 While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother(FZ) and brothers(GA) stood outside, wanting to speak to him. 47 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”

48 He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven(GB) is my brother and sister and mother.”
