Jesus Celebrates Passover with His Disciples(A)

17 (B)Now on the first day of the Feast of the Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?”

18 And He said, “Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, (C)“My time is at hand; I will keep the Passover at your house with My disciples.” ’ ”

19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the Passover.

20 (D)When evening had come, He sat down with the twelve. 21 Now as they were eating, He said, “Assuredly, I say to you, one of you will (E)betray Me.”

22 And they were exceedingly sorrowful, and each of them began to say to Him, “Lord, is it I?”

23 He answered and said, (F)“He who dipped his hand with Me in the dish will betray Me. 24 The Son of Man indeed goes just (G)as it is written of Him, but (H)woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! (I)It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.”

25 Then Judas, who was betraying Him, answered and said, “Rabbi, is it I?”

He said to him, “You have said it.”

Jesus Institutes the Lord’s Supper(J)

26 (K)And as they were eating, (L)Jesus took bread, [a]blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, “Take, eat; (M)this is My body.”

27 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, (N)“Drink from it, all of you. 28 For (O)this is My blood (P)of the [b]new covenant, which is shed (Q)for many for the [c]remission of sins. 29 But (R)I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on (S)until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.”

30 (T)And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(U)

31 Then Jesus said to them, (V)“All of you will (W)be [d]made to stumble because of Me this night, for it is written:

(X)‘I will strike the Shepherd,
And the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’

32 But after I have been raised, (Y)I will go before you to Galilee.”

33 Peter answered and said to Him, “Even if all are [e]made to stumble because of You, I will never be made to stumble.”

34 Jesus said to him, (Z)“Assuredly, I say to you that this night, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.”

35 Peter said to Him, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!”

And so said all the disciples.

The Prayer in the Garden(AA)

36 (AB)Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to the disciples, “Sit here while I go and pray over there.” 37 And He took with Him Peter and (AC)the two sons of Zebedee, and He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed. 38 Then He said to them, (AD)“My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me.”

39 He went a little farther and fell on His face, and (AE)prayed, saying, (AF)“O My Father, if it is possible, (AG)let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, (AH)not as I will, but as You will.

40 Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “What! Could you not watch with Me one hour? 41 (AI)Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. (AJ)The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

42 Again, a second time, He went away and prayed, saying, “O My Father, [f]if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done.” 43 And He came and found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy.

44 So He left them, went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. 45 Then He came to His disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour [g]is at hand, and the Son of Man is being (AK)betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise, let us be going. See, My betrayer is at hand.”

Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane(AL)

47 And (AM)while He was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and elders of the people.

48 Now His betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him.” 49 Immediately he went up to Jesus and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” (AN)and kissed Him.

50 But Jesus said to him, (AO)“Friend, why have you come?”

Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and took Him. 51 And suddenly, (AP)one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword, struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.

52 But Jesus said to him, “Put your sword in its place, (AQ)for all who take the sword will [h]perish by the sword. 53 Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with (AR)more than twelve legions of angels? 54 How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, (AS)that it must happen thus?”

55 In that hour Jesus said to the multitudes, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple, and you did not seize Me. 56 But all this was done that the (AT)Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.”

Then (AU)all the disciples forsook Him and fled.

Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin(AV)

57 (AW)And those who had laid hold of Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. 58 But (AX)Peter followed Him at a distance to the high priest’s courtyard. And he went in and sat with the servants to see the end.

59 Now the chief priests, [i]the elders, and all the council sought (AY)false testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, 60 [j]but found none. Even though (AZ)many false witnesses came forward, they found none. But at last (BA)two [k]false witnesses came forward 61 and said, “This fellow said, (BB)‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and to build it in three days.’ ”

62 (BC)And the high priest arose and said to Him, “Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?” 63 But (BD)Jesus kept silent. And the high priest answered and said to Him, (BE)“I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!”

64 Jesus said to him, It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, (BF)hereafter you will see the Son of Man (BG)sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

65 (BH)Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, “He has spoken blasphemy! What further need do we have of witnesses? Look, now you have heard His (BI)blasphemy! 66 What do you think?”

They answered and said, (BJ)“He is deserving of death.”

67 (BK)Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and (BL)others struck Him with [l]the palms of their hands, 68 saying, (BM)“Prophesy to us, Christ! Who is the one who struck You?”

Peter Denies Jesus, and Weeps Bitterly(BN)

69 (BO)Now Peter sat outside in the courtyard. And a servant girl came to him, saying, “You also were with Jesus of Galilee.”

70 But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you are saying.”

71 And when he had gone out to the gateway, another girl saw him and said to those who were there, “This fellow also was with Jesus of Nazareth.”

72 But again he denied with an oath, “I do not know the Man!”

73 And a little later those who stood by came up and said to Peter, “Surely you also are one of them, for your (BP)speech betrays you.”

74 Then (BQ)he began to [m]curse and [n]swear, saying, “I do not know the Man!”

Immediately a rooster crowed. 75 And Peter remembered the word of Jesus who had said to him, (BR)“Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” So he went out and wept bitterly.

The Last Supper(A)(B)(C)

17 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread,(D) the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”(E)

18 He replied, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The Teacher says: My appointed time(F) is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.’” 19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover.

20 When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve. 21 And while they were eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.”(G)

22 They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, “Surely you don’t mean me, Lord?”

23 Jesus replied, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me.(H) 24 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him.(I) But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”

25 Then Judas, the one who would betray him,(J) said, “Surely you don’t mean me, Rabbi?”(K)

Jesus answered, “You have said so.”

26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it(L) and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”

27 Then he took a cup,(M) and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the[a] covenant,(N) which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.(O) 29 I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you(P) in my Father’s kingdom.”

30 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.(Q)

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(R)

31 Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me,(S) for it is written:

“‘I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’[b](T)

32 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”(U)

33 Peter replied, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.”

34 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”(V)

35 But Peter declared, “Even if I have to die with you,(W) I will never disown you.” And all the other disciples said the same.

Gethsemane(X)

36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee(Y) along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow(Z) to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”(AA)

39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup(AB) be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”(AC)

40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me(AD) for one hour?” he asked Peter. 41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.(AE) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

42 He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”(AF)

43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.

45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour(AG) has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

Jesus Arrested(AH)

47 While he was still speaking, Judas,(AI) one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” 49 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!”(AJ) and kissed him.

50 Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, friend.”[c](AK)

Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. 51 With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword,(AL) drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.(AM)

52 “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.(AN) 53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?(AO) 54 But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled(AP) that say it must happen in this way?”

55 In that hour Jesus said to the crowd, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching,(AQ) and you did not arrest me. 56 But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.”(AR) Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin(AS)

57 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas(AT) the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. 58 But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest.(AU) He entered and sat down with the guards(AV) to see the outcome.

59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(AW) were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. 60 But they did not find any, though many false witnesses(AX) came forward.

Finally two(AY) came forward 61 and declared, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”(AZ)

62 Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 63 But Jesus remained silent.(BA)

The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath(BB) by the living God:(BC) Tell us if you are the Messiah,(BD) the Son of God.”(BE)

64 “You have said so,”(BF) Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One(BG) and coming on the clouds of heaven.”[d](BH)

65 Then the high priest tore his clothes(BI) and said, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. 66 What do you think?”

“He is worthy of death,”(BJ) they answered.

67 Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists.(BK) Others slapped him 68 and said, “Prophesy to us, Messiah. Who hit you?”(BL)

Peter Disowns Jesus(BM)

69 Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. “You also were with Jesus of Galilee,” she said.

70 But he denied it before them all. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said.

71 Then he went out to the gateway, where another servant girl saw him and said to the people there, “This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.”

72 He denied it again, with an oath: “I don’t know the man!”

73 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, “Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.”

74 Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know the man!”

Immediately a rooster crowed. 75 Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”(BN) And he went outside and wept bitterly.

Jesus Celebrates the Passover with His Disciples(A)

12 (B)Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they [a]killed the Passover lamb, His disciples said to Him, “Where do You want us to go and prepare, that You may eat the Passover?”

13 And He sent out two of His disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him. 14 Wherever he goes in, say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’ 15 Then he will show you a large upper room, furnished and prepared; there make ready for us.”

16 So His disciples went out, and came into the city, and found it just as He had said to them; and they prepared the Passover.

17 (C)In the evening He came with the twelve. 18 Now as they sat and ate, Jesus said, “Assuredly, I say to you, (D)one of you who eats with Me will betray Me.”

19 And they began to be sorrowful, and to say to Him one by one, “Is it I?” [b]And another said,Is it I?”

20 He answered and said to them, It is one of the twelve, who dips with Me in the dish. 21 (E)The Son of Man indeed goes just as it is written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had never been born.”

Jesus Institutes the Lord’s Supper(F)

22 (G)And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them and said, “Take, [c]eat; this is My (H)body.”

23 Then He took the cup, and when He had given thanks He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 And He said to them, “This is My blood of the [d]new covenant, which is shed for many. 25 Assuredly, I say to you, I will no longer drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

26 (I)And when they had sung [e]a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

27 (K)Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will be made to stumble [f]because of Me this night, for it is written:

(L)‘I will strike the Shepherd,
And the sheep will be scattered.’

28 “But (M)after I have been raised, I will go before you to Galilee.”

29 (N)Peter said to Him, “Even if all are made to [g]stumble, yet I will not be.

30 Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you that today, even this night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.”

31 But he spoke more vehemently, “If I have to die with You, I will not deny You!”

And they all said likewise.

The Prayer in the Garden(O)

32 (P)Then they came to a place which was named Gethsemane; and He said to His disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 And He (Q)took Peter, James, and John with Him, and He began to be troubled and deeply distressed. 34 Then He said to them, (R)“My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch.”

35 He went a little farther, and fell on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him. 36 And He said, (S)“Abba, Father, (T)all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; (U)nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.

37 Then He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not watch one hour? 38 (V)Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. (W)The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

39 Again He went away and prayed, and spoke the same words. 40 And when He returned, He found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy; and they did not know what to answer Him.

41 Then He came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough! (X)The hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 (Y)Rise, let us be going. See, My betrayer is at hand.”

Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane(Z)

43 (AA)And immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44 Now His betrayer had given them a signal, saying, “Whomever I (AB)kiss, He is the One; seize Him and lead Him away safely.”

45 As soon as he had come, immediately he went up to Him and said to Him, “Rabbi, Rabbi!” and kissed Him.

46 Then they laid their hands on Him and took Him. 47 And one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.

48 (AC)Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? 49 I was daily with you in the temple (AD)teaching, and you did not seize Me. But (AE)the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”

50 (AF)Then they all forsook Him and fled.

51 Now a certain young man followed Him, having a linen cloth thrown around his naked body. And the young men laid hold of him, 52 and he left the linen cloth and fled from them naked.

Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin(AG)

53 (AH)And they led Jesus away to the high priest; and with him were (AI)assembled all the (AJ)chief priests, the elders, and the scribes. 54 But (AK)Peter followed Him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. And he sat with the servants and warmed himself at the fire.

55 (AL)Now the chief priests and all the council sought testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none. 56 For many bore (AM)false witness against Him, but their testimonies [h]did not agree.

57 Then some rose up and bore false witness against Him, saying, 58 “We heard Him say, (AN)‘I will destroy this temple made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.’ ” 59 But not even then did their testimony agree.

60 (AO)And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, saying, “Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?” 61 But (AP)He kept silent and answered nothing.

(AQ)Again the high priest asked Him, saying to Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?”

62 Jesus said, “I am. (AR)And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.”

63 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “What further need do we have of witnesses? 64 You have heard the (AS)blasphemy! What do you think?”

And they all condemned Him to be deserving of (AT)death.

65 Then some began to (AU)spit on Him, and to blindfold Him, and to beat Him, and to say to Him, “Prophesy!” And the officers [i]struck Him with the palms of their hands.

Peter Denies Jesus, and Weeps(AV)

66 (AW)Now as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came. 67 And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with (AX)Jesus of Nazareth.”

68 But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you are saying.” And he went out on the porch, and a rooster crowed.

69 (AY)And the servant girl saw him again, and began to say to those who stood by, “This is one of them.” 70 But he denied it again.

(AZ)And a little later those who stood by said to Peter again, “Surely you are one of them; (BA)for you are a Galilean, [j]and your [k]speech shows it.

71 Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know this Man of whom you speak!”

72 (BB)A second time the rooster crowed. Then Peter called to mind the word that Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And when he thought about it, he wept.

The Last Supper(A)(B)

12 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb,(C) Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”

13 So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. 14 Say to the owner of the house he enters, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 15 He will show you a large room upstairs,(D) furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.”

16 The disciples left, went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.

17 When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. 18 While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.”

19 They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?”

20 “It is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me.(E) 21 The Son of Man(F) will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”

22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it(G) and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”

23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.(H)

24 “This is my blood of the[a] covenant,(I) which is poured out for many,” he said to them. 25 “Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”(J)

26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.(K)

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(L)

27 “You will all fall away,” Jesus told them, “for it is written:

“‘I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep will be scattered.’[b](M)

28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”(N)

29 Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I will not.”

30 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice[c] you yourself will disown me three times.”(O)

31 But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you,(P) I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.

Gethsemane(Q)

32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter, James and John(R) along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,”(S) he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”

35 Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour(T) might pass from him. 36 “Abba,[d] Father,”(U) he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup(V) from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”(W)

37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? 38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.(X) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”(Y)

39 Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.

41 Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour(Z) has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

Jesus Arrested(AA)

43 Just as he was speaking, Judas,(AB) one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.

44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!”(AC) and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts,(AD) and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”(AE) 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled.(AF)

51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin(AG)(AH)

53 They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together. 54 Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest.(AI) There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.(AJ)

55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(AK) were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. 56 Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.

57 Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another,(AL) not made with hands.’” 59 Yet even then their testimony did not agree.

60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer.(AM)

Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”(AN)

62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”(AO)

63 The high priest tore his clothes.(AP) “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. 64 “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?”

They all condemned him as worthy of death.(AQ) 65 Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.(AR)

Peter Disowns Jesus(AS)

66 While Peter was below in the courtyard,(AT) one of the servant girls of the high priest came by. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself,(AU) she looked closely at him.

“You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,”(AV) she said.

68 But he denied it. “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,”(AW) he said, and went out into the entryway.[e]

69 When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, “This fellow is one of them.” 70 Again he denied it.(AX)

After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”(AY)

71 He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about.”(AZ)

72 Immediately the rooster crowed the second time.[f] Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice[g] you will disown me three times.”(BA) And he broke down and wept.

Jesus and His Disciples Prepare the Passover

(A)Then came the Day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover must be [a]killed. And He sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat.”

So they said to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare?”

10 And He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house which he enters. 11 Then you shall say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’ 12 Then he will show you a large, furnished upper room; there make ready.”

13 So they went and (B)found it just as He had said to them, and they prepared the Passover.

Jesus Institutes the Lord’s Supper

14 (C)When the hour had come, He sat down, and the [b]twelve apostles with Him. 15 Then He said to them, “With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16 for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it (D)until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”

17 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves; 18 for (E)I say to you, [c]I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”

19 (F)And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My (G)body which is given for you; (H)do this in remembrance of Me.”

20 Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, (I)“This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you. 21 (J)But behold, the hand of My betrayer is with Me on the table. 22 (K)And truly the Son of Man goes (L)as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!”

23 (M)Then they began to question among themselves, which of them it was who would do this thing.

The Disciples Argue About Greatness

24 (N)Now there was also a dispute among them, as to which of them should be considered the greatest. 25 (O)And He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called ‘benefactors.’ 26 (P)But not so among you; on the contrary, (Q)he who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves. 27 (R)For who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table? Yet (S)I am among you as the One who serves.

28 “But you are those who have continued with Me in (T)My trials. 29 And (U)I bestow upon you a kingdom, just as My Father bestowed one upon Me, 30 that (V)you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, (W)and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(X)

31 [d]And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, (Y)Satan has asked for you, that he may (Z)sift you as wheat. 32 But (AA)I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, (AB)strengthen your brethren.”

33 But he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death.”

34 (AC)Then He said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know Me.”

Supplies for the Road

35 (AD)And He said to them, “When I sent you without money bag, knapsack, and sandals, did you lack anything?”

So they said, “Nothing.”

36 Then He said to them, “But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one. 37 For I say to you that this which is written must still be [e]accomplished in Me: (AE)‘And He was numbered with the transgressors.’ For the things concerning Me have an end.”

38 So they said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.”

And He said to them, “It is enough.”

The Prayer in the Garden(AF)

39 (AG)Coming out, (AH)He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him. 40 (AI)When He came to the place, He said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.”

41 (AJ)And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless (AK)not My will, but Yours, be done.” 43 [f]Then (AL)an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. 44 (AM)And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

45 When He rose up from prayer, and had come to His disciples, He found them sleeping from sorrow. 46 Then He said to them, “Why (AN)do you sleep? Rise and (AO)pray, lest you enter into temptation.”

Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane(AP)

47 And while He was still speaking, (AQ)behold, a multitude; and he who was called (AR)Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near to Jesus to kiss Him. 48 But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a (AS)kiss?”

49 When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they said to Him, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” 50 And (AT)one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.

51 But Jesus answered and said, “Permit even this.” And He touched his ear and healed him.

52 (AU)Then Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and the elders who had come to Him, “Have you come out, as against a (AV)robber, with swords and clubs? 53 When I was with you daily in the (AW)temple, you did not try to seize Me. But this is your (AX)hour, and the power of darkness.”

Peter Denies Jesus, and Weeps Bitterly(AY)

54 (AZ)Having arrested Him, they led Him and brought Him into the high priest’s house. (BA)But Peter followed at a distance. 55 (BB)Now when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them. 56 And a certain servant girl, seeing him as he sat by the fire, looked intently at him and said, “This man was also with Him.”

57 But he denied [g]Him, saying, “Woman, I do not know Him.”

58 (BC)And after a little while another saw him and said, “You also are of them.”

But Peter said, “Man, I am not!”

59 (BD)Then after about an hour had passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, “Surely this fellow also was with Him, for he is a (BE)Galilean.”

60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are saying!”

Immediately, while he was still speaking, [h]the rooster crowed. 61 And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then (BF)Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, (BG)“Before the rooster [i]crows, you will deny Me three times.” 62 So Peter went out and wept bitterly.

The Last Supper(A)(B)(C)(D)(E)

Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.(F) Jesus sent Peter and John,(G) saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.”

“Where do you want us to prepare for it?” they asked.

10 He replied, “As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, 11 and say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 12 He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there.”

13 They left and found things just as Jesus had told them.(H) So they prepared the Passover.

14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles(I) reclined at the table.(J) 15 And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.(K) 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.”(L)

17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. 18 For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”

19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it,(M) and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”

20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant(N) in my blood, which is poured out for you.[a] 21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table.(O) 22 The Son of Man(P) will go as it has been decreed.(Q) But woe to that man who betrays him!” 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this.

24 A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest.(R) 25 Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest,(S) and the one who rules like the one who serves.(T) 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.(U) 28 You are those who have stood by me in my trials. 29 And I confer on you a kingdom,(V) just as my Father conferred one on me, 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom(W) and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.(X)

31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked(Y) to sift all of you as wheat.(Z) 32 But I have prayed for you,(AA) Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”(AB)

33 But he replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.”(AC)

34 Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.”

35 Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals,(AD) did you lack anything?”

“Nothing,” they answered.

36 He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. 37 It is written: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors’[b];(AE) and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.”

38 The disciples said, “See, Lord, here are two swords.”

“That’s enough!” he replied.

Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives(AF)

39 Jesus went out as usual(AG) to the Mount of Olives,(AH) and his disciples followed him. 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.”(AI) 41 He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down(AJ) and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup(AK) from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”(AL) 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.(AM) 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.[c]

45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”(AN)

Jesus Arrested(AO)

47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”

49 When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?”(AP) 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.

51 But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.

52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard,(AQ) and the elders, who had come for him, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts,(AR) and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour(AS)—when darkness reigns.”(AT)

Peter Disowns Jesus(AU)

54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest.(AV) Peter followed at a distance.(AW) 55 And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, “This man was with him.”

57 But he denied it. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said.

58 A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.”

“Man, I am not!” Peter replied.

59 About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.”(AX)

60 Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 The Lord(AY) turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.”(AZ) 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.

  2. Luke 22:37 Isaiah 53:12
  3. Luke 22:44 Many early manuscripts do not have verses 43 and 44.

21 (A)When Jesus had said these things, (B)He was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, (C)one of you will betray Me.” 22 Then the disciples looked at one another, perplexed about whom He spoke.

23 Now (D)there was [a]leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved. 24 Simon Peter therefore motioned to him to ask who it was of whom He spoke.

25 Then, leaning [b]back on Jesus’ breast, he said to Him, “Lord, who is it?”

26 Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread when I have dipped it. And having dipped the bread, He gave it to (E)Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. 27 (F)Now after the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus said to him, “What you do, do quickly.” 28 But no one at the table knew for what reason He said this to him. 29 For some thought, because (G)Judas had the money box, that Jesus had said to him, “Buy those things we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor.

30 Having received the piece of bread, he then went out immediately. And it was night.

The New Commandment

31 So, when he had gone out, Jesus said, (H)“Now the Son of Man is glorified, and (I)God is glorified in Him. 32 If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and (J)glorify Him immediately. 33 Little children, I shall be with you a (K)little while longer. You will seek Me; (L)and as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come,’ so now I say to you. 34 (M)A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 (N)By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

36 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?”

Jesus answered him, “Where I (O)am going you cannot follow Me now, but (P)you shall follow Me afterward.”

37 Peter said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You now? I will (Q)lay down my life for Your sake.”

38 Jesus answered him, “Will you lay down your life for My sake? Most assuredly, I say to you, the rooster shall not (R)crow till you have denied Me three times.

The Way, the Truth, and the Life

14 “Let (S)not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many [c]mansions; if it were not so, [d]I would have told you. (T)I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, (U)I will come again and receive you to Myself; that (V)where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know.”

(W)Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?”

Jesus said to him, “I am (X)the way, (Y)the truth, and (Z)the life. (AA)No one comes to the Father (AB)except through Me.

The Father Revealed

(AC)“If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him.”

Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.”

Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? (AD)He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that (AE)I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you (AF)I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. 11 Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, (AG)or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.

The Answered Prayer

12 (AH)“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. 13 (AI)And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be (AJ)glorified in the Son. 14 If you [e]ask anything in My name, I will do it.

Jesus Promises Another Helper

15 (AK)“If you love Me, [f]keep My commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and (AL)He will give you another [g]Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 (AM)the Spirit of truth, (AN)whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you (AO)and will be in you. 18 (AP)I will not leave you orphans; (AQ)I will come to you.

Indwelling of the Father and the Son

19 “A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but (AR)you will see Me. (AS)Because I live, you will live also. 20 At that day you will know that (AT)I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. 21 (AU)He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and [h]manifest Myself to him.”

22 (AV)Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, “Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?”

23 Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, (AW)and We will come to him and make Our home with him. 24 He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and (AX)the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me.

The Gift of His Peace

25 “These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. 26 But (AY)the [i]Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will (AZ)send in My name, (BA)He will teach you all things, and bring to your (BB)remembrance all things that I said to you. 27 (BC)Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. 28 You have heard Me (BD)say to you, ‘I am going away and coming back to you.’ If you loved Me, you would rejoice because [j]I said, (BE)‘I am going to the Father,’ for (BF)My Father is greater than I.

29 “And (BG)now I have told you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe. 30 I will no longer talk much with you, (BH)for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has (BI)nothing in Me. 31 But that the world may know that I love the Father, and (BJ)as the Father gave Me commandment, so I do. Arise, let us go from here.

The True Vine

15 “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. (BK)Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He [k]takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear (BL)more fruit. (BM)You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. (BN)Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.

“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much (BO)fruit; for without Me you can do (BP)nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, (BQ)he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words (BR)abide in you, (BS)you[l] will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. (BT)By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; (BU)so you will be My disciples.

Love and Joy Perfected

“As the Father (BV)loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. 10 (BW)If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.

11 “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and (BX)that your joy may be full. 12 (BY)This is My (BZ)commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 (CA)Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. 14 (CB)You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, (CC)for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you. 16 (CD)You did not choose Me, but I chose you and (CE)appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father (CF)in My name He may give you. 17 These things I command you, that you love one another.

The World’s Hatred

18 (CG)“If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. 19 (CH)If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet (CI)because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you, (CJ)‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. (CK)If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. 21 But (CL)all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me. 22 (CM)If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, (CN)but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 (CO)He who hates Me hates My Father also. 24 If I had not done among them (CP)the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have (CQ)seen and also hated both Me and My Father. 25 But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, (CR)‘They hated Me without a cause.’

The Coming Rejection

26 (CS)“But when the [m]Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, (CT)He will testify of Me. 27 And (CU)you also will bear witness, because (CV)you have been with Me from the beginning.

Jesus Warns and Comforts His Disciples

16 “These things I have spoken to you, that you (CW)should not be made to stumble. (CX)They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming (CY)that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service. And (CZ)these things they will do [n]to you because they have not known the Father nor Me. But these things I have told you, that when [o]the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them.

“And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

“But now I (DA)go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ But because I have said these things to you, (DB)sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but (DC)if I depart, I will send Him to you. And when He has (DD)come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: (DE)of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 (DF)of righteousness, (DG)because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 (DH)of judgment, because (DI)the ruler of this world is judged.

12 “I still have many things to say to you, (DJ)but you cannot bear them now. 13 However, when He, (DK)the Spirit of truth, has come, (DL)He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 (DM)He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 (DN)All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He [p]will take of Mine and declare it to you.

Sorrow Will Turn to Joy

16 “A (DO)little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me, (DP)because I go to the Father.”

17 Then some of His disciples said among themselves, “What is this that He says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’; and, ‘because I go to the Father’?” 18 They said therefore, “What is this that He says, ‘A little while’? We do not [q]know what He is saying.”

19 Now Jesus knew that they desired to ask Him, and He said to them, “Are you inquiring among yourselves about what I said, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’? 20 Most assuredly, I say to you that you will weep and (DQ)lament, but the world will rejoice; and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into (DR)joy. 21 (DS)A woman, when she is in labor, has sorrow because her hour has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and (DT)your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you.

23 “And in that day you will ask Me nothing. (DU)Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, (DV)that your joy may be (DW)full.

Jesus Christ Has Overcome the World

25 “These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you (DX)plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you; 27 (DY)for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and (DZ)have believed that I came forth from God. 28 (EA)I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father.”

29 His disciples said to Him, “See, now You are speaking plainly, and using no figure of speech! 30 Now we are sure that (EB)You know all things, and have no need that anyone should question You. By this (EC)we believe that You came forth from God.”

31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 (ED)Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, (EE)each to his [r]own, and will leave Me alone. And (EF)yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. 33 These things I have spoken to you, that (EG)in Me you may have peace. (EH)In the world you [s]will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, (EI)I have overcome the world.”

Jesus Prays for Himself

17 Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: “Father, (EJ)the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, (EK)as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He [t]should give eternal life to as many (EL)as You have given Him. And (EM)this is eternal life, that they may know You, (EN)the only true God, and Jesus Christ (EO)whom You have sent. (EP)I have glorified You on the earth. (EQ)I have finished the work (ER)which You have given Me to do. And now, O Father, glorify Me together [u]with Yourself, with the glory (ES)which I had with You before the world was.

Jesus Prays for His Disciples

(ET)“I have [v]manifested Your name to the men (EU)whom You have given Me out of the world. (EV)They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. Now they have known that all things which You have given Me are from You. For I have given to them the words (EW)which You have given Me; and they have received them, (EX)and have known surely that I came forth from You; and they have believed that (EY)You sent Me.

“I pray for them. (EZ)I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours. 10 And all Mine are Yours, and (FA)Yours are Mine, and I am glorified in them. 11 (FB)Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, (FC)keep[w] through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one (FD)as We are. 12 While I was with them [x]in the world, (FE)I kept them in [y]Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and (FF)none of them is [z]lost (FG)except the son of [aa]perdition, (FH)that the Scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now I come to You, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves. 14 I have given them Your word; (FI)and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, (FJ)just as I am not of the world. 15 I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but (FK)that You should keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 (FL)Sanctify[ab] them by Your truth. (FM)Your word is truth. 18 (FN)As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. 19 And (FO)for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth.

Jesus Prays for All Believers

20 “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who [ac]will believe in Me through their word; 21 (FP)that they all may be one, as (FQ)You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. 22 And the (FR)glory which You gave Me I have given them, (FS)that they may be one just as We are one: 23 I in them, and You in Me; (FT)that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.

24 (FU)“Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; (FV)for You loved Me before the foundation of the world. 25 O righteous Father! (FW)The world has not known You, but (FX)I have known You; and (FY)these have known that You sent Me. 26 (FZ)And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it, that the love (GA)with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.”

Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane(GB)

18 When Jesus had spoken these words, (GC)He went out with His disciples over (GD)the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered. And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; (GE)for Jesus often met there with His disciples. (GF)Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. Jesus therefore, (GG)knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, “Whom are you seeking?”

They answered Him, (GH)“Jesus [ad]of Nazareth.”

Jesus said to them, “I am He. And Judas, who (GI)betrayed Him, also stood with them. Now when He said to them, “I am He, they drew back and fell to the ground.

Then He asked them again, “Whom are you seeking?”

And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”

Jesus answered, “I have told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way,” that the saying might be fulfilled which He spoke, (GJ)“Of those whom You gave Me I have lost none.”

10 (GK)Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.

11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink (GL)the cup which My Father has given Me?”

Before the High Priest

12 Then the detachment of troops and the captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him. 13 And (GM)they led Him away to (GN)Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of (GO)Caiaphas who was high priest that year. 14 (GP)Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was [ae]expedient that one man should die for the people.

Peter Denies Jesus(GQ)

15 (GR)And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did (GS)another[af] disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest. 16 (GT)But Peter stood at the door outside. Then the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought Peter in. 17 Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter, “You are not also one of this Man’s disciples, are you?”

He said, “I am (GU)not.”

18 Now the servants and officers who had made a fire of coals stood there, for it was cold, and they warmed themselves. And Peter stood with them and warmed himself.

Jesus Questioned by the High Priest

19 The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine.

20 Jesus answered him, (GV)“I spoke openly to the world. I always taught (GW)in synagogues and (GX)in the temple, where [ag]the Jews always meet, and in secret I have said nothing. 21 Why do you ask Me? Ask (GY)those who have heard Me what I said to them. Indeed they know what I said.”

22 And when He had said these things, one of the officers who stood by (GZ)struck[ah] Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, “Do You answer the high priest like that?”

23 Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?”

24 (HA)Then Annas sent Him bound to (HB)Caiaphas the high priest.

Peter Denies Twice More

25 Now Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. (HC)Therefore they said to him, “You are not also one of His disciples, are you?”

He denied it and said, “I am not!”

26 One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of him whose ear Peter cut off, said, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?” 27 Peter then denied again; and (HD)immediately a rooster crowed.

21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit(A) and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.”(B)

22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. 23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved,(C) was reclining next to him. 24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, “Ask him which one he means.”

25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?”(D)

26 Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas,(E) the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him.(F)

So Jesus told him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.” 28 But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. 29 Since Judas had charge of the money,(G) some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival,(H) or to give something to the poor.(I) 30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.(J)

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(K)

31 When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man(L) is glorified(M) and God is glorified in him.(N) 32 If God is glorified in him,[a] God will glorify the Son in himself,(O) and will glorify him at once.

33 “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.(P)

34 “A new command(Q) I give you: Love one another.(R) As I have loved you, so you must love one another.(S) 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”(T)

36 Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?”(U)

Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now,(V) but you will follow later.”(W)

37 Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”

38 Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!(X)

Jesus Comforts His Disciples

14 “Do not let your hearts be troubled.(Y) You believe(Z) in God[b];(AA) believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there(AB) to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back(AC) and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.(AD) You know the way to the place where I am going.”

Jesus the Way to the Father

Thomas(AE) said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

Jesus answered, “I am(AF) the way(AG) and the truth(AH) and the life.(AI) No one comes to the Father except through me.(AJ) If you really know me, you will know[c] my Father as well.(AK) From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

Philip(AL) said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”

Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.(AM) How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me?(AN) The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority.(AO) Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.(AP) 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes(AQ) in me will do the works I have been doing,(AR) and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask(AS) in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 “If you love me, keep my commands.(AT) 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate(AU) to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth.(AV) The world cannot accept him,(AW) because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be[d] in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans;(AX) I will come to you.(AY) 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me.(AZ) Because I live, you also will live.(BA) 20 On that day(BB) you will realize that I am in my Father,(BC) and you are in me, and I am in you.(BD) 21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me.(BE) The one who loves me will be loved by my Father,(BF) and I too will love them and show myself to them.”

22 Then Judas(BG) (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?”(BH)

23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching.(BI) My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.(BJ) 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.(BK)

25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate,(BL) the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name,(BM) will teach you all things(BN) and will remind you of everything I have said to you.(BO) 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.(BP) I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled(BQ) and do not be afraid.

28 “You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’(BR) If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father,(BS) for the Father is greater than I.(BT) 29 I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe.(BU) 30 I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world(BV) is coming. He has no hold over me, 31 but he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me.(BW)

“Come now; let us leave.

The Vine and the Branches

15 “I am(BX) the true vine,(BY) and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit,(BZ) while every branch that does bear fruit(CA) he prunes[e] so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.(CB) Remain in me, as I also remain in you.(CC) No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit;(CD) apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.(CE) If you remain in me(CF) and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.(CG) This is to my Father’s glory,(CH) that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.(CI)

“As the Father has loved me,(CJ) so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands,(CK) you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.(CL) 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.(CM) 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.(CN) 14 You are my friends(CO) if you do what I command.(CP) 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.(CQ) 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you(CR) so that you might go and bear fruit(CS)—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.(CT) 17 This is my command: Love each other.(CU)

The World Hates the Disciples

18 “If the world hates you,(CV) keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you(CW) out of the world. That is why the world hates you.(CX) 20 Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’[f](CY) If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.(CZ) If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. 21 They will treat you this way because of my name,(DA) for they do not know the one who sent me.(DB) 22 If I had not come and spoken to them,(DC) they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.(DD) 23 Whoever hates me hates my Father as well. 24 If I had not done among them the works no one else did,(DE) they would not be guilty of sin.(DF) As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. 25 But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law:(DG) ‘They hated me without reason.’[g](DH)
