20 (A)As they were passing by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots up. 21 And being reminded, Peter *said to Him, “(B)Rabbi, look, the fig tree that You cursed has withered.” 22 And Jesus answered and *said to them, (C)Have faith in God. 23 (D)Truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is going to happen, it will be granted to him. 24 Therefore, I say to you, (E)all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they will be granted to you. 25 And whenever you (F)stand praying, (G)forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father who is in heaven will also forgive you for your [a]offenses. 26 [[b](H)But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father who is in heaven forgive your [c]offenses.”]

Jesus’ Authority Questioned

27 And they *came again to Jerusalem. (I)And as He was walking in the temple area, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders *came to Him, 28 and began saying to Him, “By what authority are You doing these things, or who gave You this authority to do these things?” 29 But Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question, and you answer Me, and then I will tell you by what authority I do these things. 30 Was the baptism of John from heaven, or from men? Answer Me.” 31 And they began considering the implications among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’ 32 But should we say, ‘From men’?”—they were afraid of the [d]people, for they all considered John to have been a real prophet. 33 Answering Jesus, they *said, “We do not know.” And Jesus *said to them, “Neither am I telling you by what authority I do these things.”

Parable of the Vine-growers

12 (J)And He began to speak to them in parables: (K)A man (L)planted a vineyard and put a [e]fence around it, and dug a vat under the wine press and built a tower, and leased it to [f]vine-growers and went on a journey. And at the harvest time he sent a slave to the vine-growers, in order to receive his share of the produce of the vineyard from the vine-growers. And they took him, and beat him, and sent him away empty-handed. And again he sent them another slave, and they wounded him in the head, and treated him shamefully. And he sent another, and that one they killed; and so with many others, beating some and killing others. He had one more man to send, a beloved son; he sent him to them last of all, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ But those vine-growers said to one another, ‘This is the heir; come, let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours!’ And they took him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard. What will the [g]owner of the vineyard do? He will come and put the vine-growers to death, and give the vineyard to others. 10 Have you not even read this Scripture:

(M)A stone which the builders rejected,
This has become the [h]chief cornerstone;
11 (N)This came about from the Lord,
And it is marvelous in our eyes’?”

12 (O)And they were seeking to seize Him, and yet they feared the [i]people, for they understood that He told the parable against them. And so (P)they left Him and went away.

Jesus Answers the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Scribes

13 (Q)Then they *sent some of the Pharisees and (R)Herodians to Him in order to (S)trap Him in a statement. 14 They came and *said to Him, “Teacher, we know that You are truthful and [j]do not care what anyone thinks; for You [k]are not partial to anyone, but You teach the way of God in truth. Is it [l]permissible to pay a [m]poll-tax to Caesar, or not? 15 Are we to pay, or not pay?” But He, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, “Why are you testing Me? Bring Me a [n]denarius to look at.” 16 And they brought one. And He *said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?” And they said to Him, “Caesar’s.” 17 And Jesus said to them, (T)Pay to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they were utterly amazed at Him.

18 (U)Some Sadducees (who say that there is no resurrection) *came to [o]Jesus, and began questioning Him, saying, 19 “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that (V)if a man’s brother dies and leaves behind a wife and does not leave a child, his brother is to [p]marry the wife and raise up [q]children for his brother. 20 There were seven brothers; and the first took a wife, and died leaving no children. 21 The second one [r]married her, and died leaving behind no children; and the third likewise; 22 and so the seven together left no children. Last of all the woman also died. 23 In the resurrection, which one’s wife will she be? For each of the seven had her as his wife.” 24 Jesus said to them, “Is this not the reason you are mistaken, that you do not [s]understand the Scriptures nor the power of God? 25 For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. 26 But [t]regarding the fact that the dead rise, have you not read in the book of Moses, (W)in the passage about the burning bush, how God spoke to him, saying, ‘(X)I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? 27 (Y)He is not the God [u]of the dead, but of the living; you are greatly mistaken.”

28 (Z)One of the scribes came up and heard them arguing, and (AA)recognizing that He had answered them well, asked Him, “What commandment is the [v]foremost of all?” 29 Jesus answered, “The [w]foremost is, ‘(AB)Hear, Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one; 30 (AC)and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘(AD)You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” 32 And the scribe said to Him, “Well said, Teacher; You have truly stated that (AE)He is One, and there is no other besides Him; 33 (AF)and to love Him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbor as oneself, (AG)is much more than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices.” 34 When Jesus saw that he had answered intelligently, He said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” (AH)And then, no one dared any longer to question Him.

35 (AI)And Jesus responded and began saying, as He (AJ)taught in the temple area, “How is it that the scribes say that the [x]Christ is the (AK)son of David? 36 David himself said [y]in the Holy Spirit,

(AL)The Lord said to my Lord,
Sit at My right hand,
Until I put Your enemies under Your feet.”’

37 David himself calls Him ‘Lord’; so in what sense is He his son?” And (AM)the large crowd [z]enjoyed listening to Him.

38 (AN)And in His teaching He was saying: “Beware of the scribes who like to walk around in long robes, and like (AO)personal greetings in the marketplaces, 39 and seats of honor in the synagogues, and places of honor at banquets, 40 (AP)who devour widows’ houses, and for appearance’s sake offer long prayers. These will receive all the more condemnation.”

The Widow’s Coins

41 (AQ)And Jesus sat down opposite (AR)the treasury, and began watching how the [aa]people were (AS)putting [ab]money into the treasury; and many rich people were putting in large amounts. 42 And a poor widow came and put in two [ac]lepta coins, which amount to a [ad]quadrans. 43 Calling His disciples to Him, He said to them, “Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all [ae]the contributors to the treasury; 44 for they all put in out of their [af]surplus, but she, out of her poverty, put in all she owned, [ag]all she had (AT)to live on.”

Things to Come

13 (AU)As He was going out of the temple, one of His disciples *said to Him, “Teacher, look! [ah]What wonderful stones and [ai]what wonderful buildings!” And Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? (AV)Not one stone will be left upon another, which will not be torn down.”

As He was sitting on (AW)the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, (AX)Peter, [aj]James, John, and Andrew were questioning Him privately, “Tell us, when will these things come about, and what will be the [ak]sign when all these things are going to be fulfilled?” And Jesus began to say to them, “See to it that no one misleads you. Many will come in My name, saying, ‘(AY)I am He!’ and they will mislead many. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; those things must take place; but that is not yet the end. For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will also be famines. These things are only the beginning of birth pains.

“But [al]be on your guard; for they will (AZ)hand you over to the [am]courts, and you will be flogged (BA)in the synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them. 10 (BB)And the gospel must first be preached to all the nations. 11 (BC)And when they [an]arrest you and hand you over, do not worry beforehand about what you are to say, but say whatever is given you at that time; for you are not the ones speaking, but it is the Holy Spirit. 12 And brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and [ao]have them put to death. 13 And (BD)you will be hated by everyone because of My name, but it is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved.

14 “Now (BE)when you see the (BF)abomination of desolation standing where it should not be—[ap]let the [aq]reader understand—then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. 15 [ar](BG)Whoever is on the [as]housetop must not go down, nor go in to get anything out of his house. 16 And [at]whoever is in the field must not turn back to get his cloak. 17 But woe to those women who are pregnant, and to those who are nursing babies in those days! 18 Moreover, pray that it will not happen in winter. 19 For those days will be such a time of tribulation as has not occurred (BH)since the beginning of the creation which God created until now, and never will again. 20 And if the Lord had not shortened those days, no [au]life would have been saved; but for the sake of the [av]elect, whom He chose, He shortened the days. 21 And then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the [aw]Christ’; or, ‘Look, there He is’; do not believe it; 22 for false christs and (BI)false prophets will arise, and will provide (BJ)signs and (BK)wonders, in order to mislead, if possible, the elect. 23 But beware; I have told you everything in advance.

The Return of Christ

24 “But in those days, after that tribulation, (BL)the sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light, 25 (BM)and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers that are in the heavens will be shaken. 26 And then they will see (BN)the Son of Man (BO)coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27 And then He will send forth the angels, and (BP)will gather together His [ax]elect from the four winds, (BQ)from the end of the earth to the end of heaven.

28 “Now learn the parable from the fig tree: as soon as its branch has become tender and sprouts its leaves, you know that summer is near. 29 So you too, when you see these things happening, [ay]recognize that [az]He is near, right at the [ba]door. 30 Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away. 32 (BR)But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.

33 “Watch out, (BS)stay alert; for you do not know when the appointed time is. 34 (BT)It is like a man away on a journey, who upon leaving his house and [bb]putting his slaves in charge, assigning to each one his task, also commanded the doorkeeper to stay alert. 35 Therefore, (BU)stay alert—for you do not know when the [bc]master of the house is coming, whether in the evening, at midnight, or (BV)when the rooster crows, or (BW)in the morning— 36 so that he does not come suddenly and find you (BX)asleep. 37 What I say to you I say to all: ‘(BY)Stay alert!’”

Death Plot and Anointing

14 (BZ)Now (CA)the Passover and Festival of Unleavened Bread were two days away; and the chief priests and the scribes (CB)were seeking how to arrest Him covertly and kill Him; for they were saying, “Not during the festival, otherwise there will be a riot of the people.”

(CC)While He was in (CD)Bethany at the home of Simon [bd]the Leper, He was reclining at the table, and a woman came with an alabaster vial of very (CE)expensive perfume of pure [be]nard. She broke the vial and poured the perfume over His head. But there were some indignantly remarking to one another, “Why has this perfume been wasted? For this perfume could have been sold for over three hundred [bf]denarii, and the money given to the poor.” And they were scolding her. But Jesus said, “Leave her alone! Why are you bothering her? She has done a good deed for Me. For you always have (CF)the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good to them; but you do not always have Me. She has done what she could; (CG)she has anointed My body beforehand for the burial. Truly I say to you, (CH)wherever the gospel is preached in the entire world, what this woman has done will also be told in memory of her.”

20 In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots. 21 Peter remembered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi,(A) look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!”

22 “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. 23 “Truly[a] I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.(B) 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.(C) 25 And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”(D) [26] [b]

The Authority of Jesus Questioned(E)

27 They arrived again in Jerusalem, and while Jesus was walking in the temple courts, the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders came to him. 28 “By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you authority to do this?”

29 Jesus replied, “I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 30 John’s baptism—was it from heaven, or of human origin? Tell me!”

31 They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ 32 But if we say, ‘Of human origin’ …” (They feared the people, for everyone held that John really was a prophet.)(F)

33 So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”

Jesus said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”

The Parable of the Tenants(G)

12 Jesus then began to speak to them in parables: “A man planted a vineyard.(H) He put a wall around it, dug a pit for the winepress and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and moved to another place. At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants to collect from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. But they seized him, beat him and sent him away empty-handed. Then he sent another servant to them; they struck this man on the head and treated him shamefully. He sent still another, and that one they killed. He sent many others; some of them they beat, others they killed.

“He had one left to send, a son, whom he loved. He sent him last of all,(I) saying, ‘They will respect my son.’

“But the tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ So they took him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.

“What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others. 10 Haven’t you read this passage of Scripture:

“‘The stone the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone;(J)
11 the Lord has done this,
and it is marvelous in our eyes’[c]?”(K)

12 Then the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders looked for a way to arrest him because they knew he had spoken the parable against them. But they were afraid of the crowd;(L) so they left him and went away.(M)

Paying the Imperial Tax to Caesar(N)

13 Later they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians(O) to Jesus to catch him(P) in his words. 14 They came to him and said, “Teacher, we know that you are a man of integrity. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are; but you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right to pay the imperial tax[d] to Caesar or not? 15 Should we pay or shouldn’t we?”

But Jesus knew their hypocrisy. “Why are you trying to trap me?” he asked. “Bring me a denarius and let me look at it.” 16 They brought the coin, and he asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?”

“Caesar’s,” they replied.

17 Then Jesus said to them, “Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.”(Q)

And they were amazed at him.

Marriage at the Resurrection(R)

18 Then the Sadducees,(S) who say there is no resurrection,(T) came to him with a question. 19 “Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.(U) 20 Now there were seven brothers. The first one married and died without leaving any children. 21 The second one married the widow, but he also died, leaving no child. It was the same with the third. 22 In fact, none of the seven left any children. Last of all, the woman died too. 23 At the resurrection[e] whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?”

24 Jesus replied, “Are you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures(V) or the power of God? 25 When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.(W) 26 Now about the dead rising—have you not read in the Book of Moses, in the account of the burning bush, how God said to him, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’[f]?(X) 27 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are badly mistaken!”

The Greatest Commandment(Y)

28 One of the teachers of the law(Z) came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”

29 “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.[g] 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’[h](AA) 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[i](AB) There is no commandment greater than these.”

32 “Well said, teacher,” the man replied. “You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him.(AC) 33 To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”(AD)

34 When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.”(AE) And from then on no one dared ask him any more questions.(AF)

Whose Son Is the Messiah?(AG)(AH)

35 While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts,(AI) he asked, “Why do the teachers of the law say that the Messiah is the son of David?(AJ) 36 David himself, speaking by the Holy Spirit,(AK) declared:

“‘The Lord said to my Lord:
    “Sit at my right hand
until I put your enemies
    under your feet.”’[j](AL)

37 David himself calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?”

The large crowd(AM) listened to him with delight.

Warning Against the Teachers of the Law

38 As he taught, Jesus said, “Watch out for the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, 39 and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.(AN) 40 They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.”

The Widow’s Offering(AO)

41 Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put(AP) and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.

43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”(AQ)

The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times(AR)

13 As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!”

“Do you see all these great buildings?” replied Jesus. “Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.”(AS)

As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives(AT) opposite the temple, Peter, James, John(AU) and Andrew asked him privately, “Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?”

Jesus said to them: “Watch out that no one deceives you.(AV) Many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and will deceive many. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.

“You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues.(AW) On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them. 10 And the gospel must first be preached to all nations. 11 Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.(AX)

12 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death.(AY) 13 Everyone will hate you because of me,(AZ) but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.(BA)

14 “When you see ‘the abomination that causes desolation’[k](BB) standing where it[l] does not belong—let the reader understand—then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 15 Let no one on the housetop go down or enter the house to take anything out. 16 Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. 17 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers!(BC) 18 Pray that this will not take place in winter, 19 because those will be days of distress unequaled from the beginning, when God created the world,(BD) until now—and never to be equaled again.(BE)

20 “If the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened them. 21 At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘Look, there he is!’ do not believe it.(BF) 22 For false messiahs and false prophets(BG) will appear and perform signs and wonders(BH) to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 23 So be on your guard;(BI) I have told you everything ahead of time.

24 “But in those days, following that distress,

“‘the sun will be darkened,
    and the moon will not give its light;
25 the stars will fall from the sky,
and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’[m](BJ)

26 “At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds(BK) with great power and glory. 27 And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens.(BL)

28 “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 29 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it[n] is near, right at the door. 30 Truly I tell you, this generation(BM) will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.(BN) 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.(BO)

The Day and Hour Unknown

32 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.(BP) 33 Be on guard! Be alert[o]!(BQ) You do not know when that time will come. 34 It’s like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants(BR) in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch.

35 “Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. 36 If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. 37 What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!’”(BS)

Jesus Anointed at Bethany(BT)(BU)(BV)

14 Now the Passover(BW) and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.(BX) “But not during the festival,” they said, “or the people may riot.”

While he was in Bethany,(BY) reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.(BZ)

Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume? It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages[p] and the money given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly.

“Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. The poor you will always have with you,[q] and you can help them any time you want.(CA) But you will not always have me. She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial.(CB) Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world,(CC) what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”
