Jesus Talks with Moses and Elijah

² Six days later, Jesus took Peter, James, and John up on a high mountain by themselves. While they watched, Jesus’ appearance was changed. ³ His clothes became shining white, whiter than any person could make them. ⁴ Then Elijah and Moses^[a] appeared to them, talking with Jesus.

⁵ Peter said to Jesus, “Teacher, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” ⁶ Peter did not know what to say, because he and the others were so frightened.

⁷ Then a cloud came and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!”

⁸ Suddenly Peter, James, and John looked around, but they saw only Jesus there alone with them.

⁹ As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone about what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

¹⁰ So the followers obeyed Jesus, but they discussed what he meant about rising from the dead.

¹¹ Then they asked Jesus, “Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”

¹² Jesus answered, “They are right to say that Elijah must come first and make everything the way it should be. But why does the Scripture say that the Son of Man will suffer much and that people will treat him as if he were nothing? ¹³ I tell you that Elijah has already come. And people did to him whatever they wanted to do, just as the Scriptures said it would happen.”

Jesus Talks with Moses and Elijah

17 Six days later, Jesus took Peter, James, and John, the brother of James, up on a high mountain by themselves. ² While they watched, Jesus’ appearance was changed; his face became bright like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. ³ Then Moses and Elijah^[a] appeared to them, talking with Jesus.

⁴ Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you want, I will put up three tents here—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

⁵ While Peter was talking, a bright cloud covered them. A voice came from the cloud and said, “This is my Son, whom I love, and I am very pleased with him. Listen to him!”

⁶ When his followers heard the voice, they were so frightened they fell to the ground. ⁷ But Jesus went to them and touched them and said, “Stand up. Don’t be afraid.” ⁸ When they looked up, they saw Jesus was now alone.

⁹ As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone about what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

¹⁰ Then his followers asked him, “Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”

¹¹ Jesus answered, “They are right to say that Elijah is coming and that he will make everything the way it should be. ¹² But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him. They did to him whatever they wanted to do. It will be the same with the Son of Man; those same people will make the Son of Man suffer.” ¹³ Then the followers understood that Jesus was talking about John the Baptist.

Jesus Talks with Moses and Elijah

²⁸ About eight days after Jesus said these things, he took Peter, John, and James and went up on a mountain to pray. ²⁹ While Jesus was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became shining white. ³⁰ Then two men, Moses and Elijah,^[a] were talking with Jesus. ³¹ They appeared in heavenly glory, talking about his departure which he would soon bring about in Jerusalem. ³² Peter and the others were very sleepy, but when they awoke fully, they saw the glory of Jesus and the two men standing with him. ³³ When Moses and Elijah were about to leave, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” (Peter did not know what he was talking about.)

³⁴ While he was saying these things, a cloud came and covered them, and they became afraid as the cloud covered them. ³⁵ A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen. Listen to him!”

³⁶ When the voice finished speaking, only Jesus was there. Peter, John, and James said nothing and told no one at that time what they had seen.
