⁸ Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? ⁹ Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’? ¹⁰ But I want you to know that the Son of Man^(A) has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man, ¹¹ “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.”

⁴ Knowing their thoughts,^(A) Jesus said, “Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts? ⁵ Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? ⁶ But I want you to know that the Son of Man^(B) has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “Get up, take your mat and go home.”

²⁹ Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care.^[a]

²² Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? ²³ Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? ²⁴ But I want you to know that the Son of Man^(A) has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.”

²¹ Jesus said to them, “I did one miracle,^(A) and you are all amazed. ²² Yet, because Moses gave you circumcision^(B) (though actually it did not come from Moses, but from the patriarchs),^(C) you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath. ²³ Now if a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with me for healing a man’s whole body on the Sabbath? ²⁴ Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”^(D)

²⁴ The Jews^(A) who were there gathered around him, saying, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”^(B)

²⁵ Jesus answered, “I did tell you,^(C) but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me,^{(D) 26} but you do not believe because you are not my sheep.^(E)

³² but Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?”

²² Jews demand signs^(A) and Greeks look for wisdom, ²³ but we preach Christ crucified:^(B) a stumbling block^(C) to Jews and foolishness^(D) to Gentiles,

²⁸ And God has placed in the church^(A) first of all apostles,^(B) second prophets,^(C) third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing,^(D) of helping, of guidance,^(E) and of different kinds of tongues.^(F)
