Jesus Counsels the Rich Young Ruler^(A)

^17 (B)Now as He was going out on the road, one came running, knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I ^(C)do that I may inherit eternal life?”

¹⁸ So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, ^(D)God.

¹⁷ So He said to him, ^[a]“Why do you call Me good? ^[b]No one is ^(A)good but One, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, ^(B)keep the commandments.”

¹⁸ He said to Him, “Which ones?”

Jesus said, ^(C)“‘You shall not murder,’ ‘You shall not commit adultery,’ ‘You shall not steal,’ ‘You shall not bear false witness,’ ^19 (D)‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ^(E)‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ ”

²⁰ The young man said to Him, “All these things I have ^(F)kept ^[c]from my youth. What do I still lack?”

²⁰ And he answered and said to Him, “Teacher, all these things I have ^(A)kept from my youth.”

²¹ Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack: Go your way, ^(B)sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have ^(C)treasure in heaven; and come, ^(D)take up the cross, and follow Me.”

²² But he was sad at this word, and went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

With God All Things Are Possible^(E)

^23 (F)Then Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, “How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!” ²⁴ And the disciples were astonished at His words. But Jesus answered again and said to them, “Children, how hard it is ^[a]for those ^(G)who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God!

²⁴ And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

²⁵ When His disciples heard it, they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?”

²⁶ But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but ^(A)with God all things are possible.”

²⁷ Then Peter answered and said to Him, “See, ^(B)we have left all and followed You. Therefore what shall we have?”

²⁸ So Jesus said to them, “Assuredly I say to you, that in the regeneration, when the Son of Man sits on the throne of His glory, ^(C)you who have followed Me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

²⁹ So Jesus answered and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or father or mother ^[a]or wife or children or ^[b]lands, for My sake and the gospel’s, ^30 (A)who shall not receive a hundredfold now in this time—houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with ^(B)persecutions—and in the age to come, eternal life. ^31 (C)But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”
