19 And he answered them, “O (A)faithless generation, (B)how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me.” 20 And they brought the boy to him. And when the spirit saw him, immediately it (C)convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. 21 And Jesus asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. 22 And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But (D)if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” 23 And Jesus said to him, (E)“‘If you can’! (F)All things are possible for one who believes.” 24 Immediately the father of the child cried out[a] and said, “I believe; (G)help my unbelief!” 25 And when Jesus saw that (H)a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, (I)“You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” 26 And after crying out and (J)convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse, so that most of them said, “He is dead.” 27 But Jesus (K)took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. 28 And when he had (L)entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” 29 And he said to them, “This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.”[b]

Jesus Again Foretells Death, Resurrection

30 (M)They went on from there and passed through Galilee. And he did not want anyone to know, 31 for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him. And when he is killed, (N)after three days he will rise.” 32 (O)But they did not understand the saying, and were afraid to ask him.

Who Is the Greatest?

33 And (P)they came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house (Q)he asked them, “What were you discussing on the way?” 34 But they kept silent, for on the way (R)they had argued with one another about who was the greatest. 35 And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, (S)“If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” 36 And he took a child and put him in the midst of them, and (T)taking him in his arms, he said to them, 37 (U)“Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, and (V)whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.”

Anyone Not Against Us Is for Us

38 (W)John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone (X)casting out demons in your name,[c] and (Y)we tried to stop him, because he was not following us.” 39 But Jesus said, “Do not stop him, for no one who does a mighty work in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. 40 (Z)For the one who is not against us is for us. 41 For truly, I say to you, (AA)whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ will by no means lose his reward.

Temptations to Sin

42 (AB)“Whoever causes one of (AC)these little ones who believe in me to sin,[d] (AD)it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea. 43 (AE)And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than with two hands to go to (AF)hell,[e] to (AG)the unquenchable fire.[f] 45 (AH)And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than with two feet to be thrown into (AI)hell. 47 (AJ)And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into (AK)hell, 48 ‘where (AL)their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.’ 49 For everyone will be salted with fire.[g] 50 (AM)Salt is good, (AN)but if the salt has lost its saltiness, how will you make it salty again? (AO)Have salt in yourselves, and (AP)be at peace with one another.”

19 “You unbelieving generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.”

20 So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.(A)

21 Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?”

“From childhood,” he answered. 22 “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.”

23 “‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.”(B)

24 Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”

25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene,(C) he rebuked the impure spirit. “You deaf and mute spirit,” he said, “I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”

26 The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, “He’s dead.” 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up.

28 After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately,(D) “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”

29 He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer.[a]

Jesus Predicts His Death a Second Time(E)

30 They left that place and passed through Galilee. Jesus did not want anyone to know where they were, 31 because he was teaching his disciples. He said to them, “The Son of Man(F) is going to be delivered into the hands of men. They will kill him,(G) and after three days(H) he will rise.”(I) 32 But they did not understand what he meant(J) and were afraid to ask him about it.

33 They came to Capernaum.(K) When he was in the house,(L) he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?” 34 But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest.(M)

35 Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.”(N)

36 He took a little child whom he placed among them. Taking the child in his arms,(O) he said to them, 37 “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.”(P)

Whoever Is Not Against Us Is for Us(Q)

38 “Teacher,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we told him to stop, because he was not one of us.”(R)

39 “Do not stop him,” Jesus said. “For no one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me, 40 for whoever is not against us is for us.(S) 41 Truly I tell you, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to the Messiah will certainly not lose their reward.(T)

Causing to Stumble

42 “If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble,(U) it would be better for them if a large millstone were hung around their neck and they were thrown into the sea.(V) 43 If your hand causes you to stumble,(W) cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell,(X) where the fire never goes out.(Y) [44] [b] 45 And if your foot causes you to stumble,(Z) cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell.(AA) [46] [c] 47 And if your eye causes you to stumble,(AB) pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell,(AC) 48 where

“‘the worms that eat them do not die,
and the fire is not quenched.’[d](AD)

49 Everyone will be salted(AE) with fire.
