11 (A)And the Pharisees came out and began to argue with Him, (B)demanding from Him a [a]sign from heaven, [b]to test Him. 12 (C)Sighing deeply in His spirit, He *said, “Why does this generation demand a [c]sign? Truly I say to you, [d](D)no [e]sign will be given to this generation!” 13 And leaving them, He again embarked and went away to the other side.

The Demand for a Sign
11 Then the Pharisees[a] came and began to argue with Jesus, asking for[b] a sign from heaven[c] to test him. 12 Sighing deeply in his spirit he said, “Why does this generation look for a sign? I tell you the truth,[d] no sign will be given to this generation.” 13 Then[e] he left them, got back into the boat, and went to the other side.

- Mark 8:11 tn Grk “seeking from him.” The participle ζητοῦντες (zētountes) shows the means by which the Pharisees argued with Jesus.
- Mark 8:11 sn What exactly this sign would have been, given what Jesus was already doing, is not clear. But here is where the fence-sitters reside, refusing to commit to him.
- Mark 8:12 tn Grk “Truly (ἀμήν, amēn), I say to you.”
- Mark 8:13 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.

11 And the Pharisees came forth, and began to question with him, seeking of him a sign from heaven, tempting him.
12 And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and saith, Why doth this generation seek after a sign? verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation.
13 And he left them, and entering into the ship again departed to the other side.
