Teaching at Nazareth

(A)Jesus went out from there and *came into [a](B)His hometown; and His disciples *followed Him. And when the Sabbath came, He began (C)to teach in the synagogue; and [b]the (D)many listeners were astonished, saying, “Where did this man learn these things, and what is this wisdom that has been given to Him, and such [c]miracles as these performed by His hands? Is this not (E)the carpenter, (F)the son of Mary and brother of [d]James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are (G)His sisters not here with us?” And they took (H)offense at Him. Jesus said to them, (I)A prophet is not dishonored except in [e](J)his hometown and among his own relatives, and in his own household.” And He could not do any [f]miracle there except that He (K)laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. And He was amazed at their unbelief.

(L)And He was going around the villages, teaching.

The Twelve Sent Out

(M)And (N)He *summoned the twelve and began to send them out (O)in pairs, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits; (P)and He instructed them that they were to take nothing for their journey, except a mere staff—no bread, no [g]bag, no money in their belt— but [h]to wear sandals; and He added, “Do not wear two [i]tunics.” 10 And He said to them, “Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you [j]leave town. 11 Any place that does not receive you or listen to you, as you go out from there, (Q)shake the dust [k]off the soles of your feet as a testimony against them.” 12 (R)And they went out and [l]preached that people are to repent. 13 And they were casting out many demons and (S)were anointing with oil many sick people and healing them.

John’s Fate Recalled

14 (T)And King Herod heard about it, for His name had become well known; and people were saying, “(U)John the Baptist has risen from the dead, and that is why these miraculous powers are at work in Him.” 15 But others were saying, “He is (V)Elijah.” And others were saying, “He is (W)a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.” 16 But when Herod heard about it, he kept saying, “John, whom I beheaded, has risen!”

17 For Herod himself had sent men and had John arrested and bound in prison on account of (X)Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, because he had married her. 18 For John had been saying to Herod, “(Y)It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” 19 And (Z)Herodias held a grudge against him and wanted to put him to death, and could not do so; 20 for (AA)Herod was afraid of John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he had been protecting him. And when he heard him, he was very perplexed; and yet he [m]used to enjoy listening to him. 21 An opportune day came when Herod, on his birthday, (AB)held a banquet for his nobles and military commanders, and the leading people (AC)of Galilee; 22 and when the daughter of (AD)Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and [n]his dinner guests; and the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you want, and I will give it to you.” 23 And he swore to her, “Whatever you ask of me, I will give it to you, up to (AE)half of my kingdom.” 24 And she went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist.” 25 Immediately she came in a hurry to the king and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.” 26 And although the king was very sorry, because of his oaths and [o]his dinner guests, he was unwilling to refuse her. 27 Immediately the king sent an executioner and commanded him to bring back his head. And he went and beheaded him in the prison, 28 and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother. 29 When his disciples heard about this, they came and carried away his body, and laid it in a tomb.

30 (AF)The (AG)apostles *gathered together with Jesus; and they reported to Him all that they had done and taught. 31 And He *said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a secluded place and rest a little while.” (For there were many people coming and going, and (AH)they did not even have time to eat.) 32 (AI)And they went away in (AJ)the boat to a secluded place by themselves.

Five Thousand Men Fed

33 The people saw them going, and many recognized them and ran there together on foot from all the cities, and got there ahead of them. 34 When Jesus went [p]ashore, He (AK)saw a large crowd, and He felt compassion for them because (AL)they were like sheep without a shepherd; and He began to teach them many things. 35 And when it was already late, His disciples came up to Him and said, “[q]This place is secluded and it is already late; 36 send them away so that they may go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves [r]something to eat.” 37 But He answered them, “You give them something to eat!” (AM)And they *said to Him, “Shall we go and spend two hundred [s](AN)denarii on bread, and give it to them to eat?” 38 But He *said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go look!” And when they found out, they *said, “Five, and two fish.” 39 And He ordered them all to recline by groups on the green grass. 40 They reclined in groups of hundreds and fifties. 41 And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He (AO)blessed the food and broke the loaves and He gave them to the disciples again and again to set before them; and He divided the two fish among them all. 42 And they all ate and were satisfied; 43 and they picked up twelve full (AP)baskets of the broken pieces of bread, and of the fish. 44 There were (AQ)five thousand [t]men who ate the loaves.

Jesus Walks on the Water

45 (AR)And immediately Jesus had His disciples get into (AS)the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side, to (AT)Bethsaida, while He Himself *dismissed the crowd. 46 And after (AU)saying goodbye to them, He left (AV)for the mountain to pray.

47 When it was evening, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and He was alone on the land. 48 Seeing them [u]straining at the oars—for the wind was against them—at about the [v](AW)fourth watch of the night, He *came to them, walking on the sea; and He intended to pass by them. 49 But when they saw Him walking on the sea, they thought that it was a ghost, and they cried out; 50 for they all saw Him and were [w]terrified. But immediately He spoke with them and *said to them, (AX)Take courage; it is I, (AY)do not be afraid.” 51 Then He got into (AZ)the boat with them, and the wind stopped; and they were utterly astonished, 52 for (BA)they [x]had not gained any insight from the incident of the loaves, but [y]their hearts (BB)were hardened.

Healing at Gennesaret

53 (BC)When they had crossed over they came to land at Gennesaret, and moored at the shore. 54 And when they got out of the boat, immediately the people recognized Him, 55 and ran about that entire country and began carrying here and there on their pallets those who were sick, [z]to wherever they heard He was. 56 And wherever He entered villages, or cities, or a countryside, they were laying the sick in the marketplaces and imploring Him that they might just (BD)touch (BE)the fringe of His cloak; and all who touched it were being [aa]healed.

Followers of Tradition

(BF)The Pharisees and some of the scribes *gathered to Him after they came (BG)from Jerusalem, and saw that some of His disciples were eating their bread with [ab](BH)unholy hands, that is, unwashed. (For the Pharisees and all the other Jews do not eat unless they [ac]carefully wash their hands, thereby holding firmly to the (BI)tradition of the elders; and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they [ad]completely cleanse themselves; and there are many other things which they have received as traditions to firmly hold, such as the [ae]washing of (BJ)cups, pitchers, and copper pots.) And the Pharisees and the scribes *asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not walk in accordance with the (BK)tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with (BL)[af]unholy hands?” But He said to them, “Rightly did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written:

(BM)This people honors Me with their lips,
But their heart is far away from Me.
(BN)And in vain do they worship Me,
Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’

Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the (BO)tradition of men.”

He was also saying to them, “You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your (BP)tradition. 10 For Moses said, ‘(BQ)Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘(BR)The one who speaks evil of father or mother, is [ag]certainly to be put to death’; 11 but you say, ‘If a person says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is (BS)Corban (that is, [ah]given to God),’ 12 you no longer allow him to do anything for his father or his mother; 13 thereby invalidating the word of God by your (BT)tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that.”

The Heart of Man

14 After He called the crowd to Him again, He began saying to them, “Listen to Me, all of you, and understand: 15 there is nothing outside the person which can defile him if it goes into him; but the things which come out of the person are what defile the person[ai].”

17 And when He later entered a house, away from the crowd, (BU)His disciples asked Him about the parable. 18 And He *said to them, “Are you so lacking in understanding as well? Do you not understand that whatever goes into the person from outside cannot defile him, 19 because it does not go into his heart, but into his stomach, and [aj]is eliminated?” (Thereby He declared (BV)all foods (BW)clean.) 20 And He was saying, (BX)That which comes out of the person, that is what defiles the person. 21 For from within, out of the [ak]hearts of people, come the evil thoughts, acts of sexual immorality, thefts, murders, acts of adultery, 22 deeds of greed, wickedness, deceit, indecent behavior, [al](BY)envy, slander, [am]pride, and foolishness. 23 All these evil things come from within and defile the person.”

The Syrophoenician Woman

24 (BZ)Now Jesus got up and went from there to the region of (CA)Tyre[an]. And when He had entered a house, He wanted no one to know about it; and yet He could not escape notice. 25 But after hearing about Him, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately came and fell at His feet. 26 Now the woman was a [ao]Gentile, of Syrophoenician descent. And she repeatedly asked Him to cast the demon out of her daughter. 27 And He was saying to her, “Let the children be satisfied first, for it is not [ap]good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the [aq]dogs.” 28 But she answered and *said to Him, “Yes, Lord, but even the dogs under the table feed on the children’s crumbs.” 29 And He said to her, “Because of this [ar]answer, go; the demon has gone out of your daughter.” 30 And after going back to her home, she found the child [as]lying on the bed, and the demon gone.

31 (CB)Again He left the region of (CC)Tyre and came through Sidon to (CD)the Sea of Galilee, within the region of (CE)Decapolis. 32 And they *brought to Him one who was deaf and had difficulty speaking, and they *begged Him to (CF)lay His hand on him. 33 And Jesus (CG)took him aside from the crowd, by himself, and put His fingers in his ears, and after (CH)spitting, He touched his tongue with the saliva; 34 and looking up to heaven with a deep (CI)sigh, He *said to him, “Ephphatha!” that is, “Be opened!” 35 And his ears were opened, and the [at]impediment of his tongue was [au]removed, and he began speaking plainly. 36 And (CJ)He gave them orders not to tell anyone; but the more He ordered them, the more widely they (CK)continued to proclaim it. 37 And they were utterly astonished, saying, “He has done all things well; He makes even those who are deaf hear, and those who are unable to talk, speak.”

Four Thousand Men Fed

In those days, (CL)when there was again a large crowd and they had nothing to eat, Jesus summoned His disciples and *said to them, (CM)I feel compassion for the [av]people because they have remained with Me for three days already and have nothing to eat. And if I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way; and some of them have come from a great distance.” And His disciples replied to Him, “Where will anyone be able to find enough [aw]bread here in this desolate place to satisfy these people?” And He was asking them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven.” And He *directed the [ax]people to recline on the ground; and taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks and broke them, and started giving them to His disciples to serve, and they served them to the [ay]people. They also had a few small fish; and (CN)after He had blessed them, He told the disciples to serve these as well. And they ate and were satisfied; and they picked up seven large (CO)baskets full of what was left over of the broken pieces. About four thousand [az]men were there; and He dismissed them. 10 And immediately He got into the boat with His disciples and came to the region of (CP)Dalmanutha.

11 (CQ)And the Pharisees came out and began to argue with Him, (CR)demanding from Him a [ba]sign from heaven, [bb]to test Him. 12 (CS)Sighing deeply in His spirit, He *said, “Why does this generation demand a [bc]sign? Truly I say to you, [bd](CT)no [be]sign will be given to this generation!” 13 And leaving them, He again embarked and went away to the other side.

14 And the disciples had forgotten to take bread, and did not have more than one loaf in the boat with them. 15 And He was giving orders to them, saying, (CU)Watch out! Beware of the [bf]leaven of the Pharisees, and the leaven of (CV)Herod.” 16 And they began to discuss with one another the fact that they had no bread. 17 And Jesus, aware of this, *said to them, “Why are you discussing the fact that you have no bread? (CW)Do you not yet comprehend or understand? Do you still have your heart [bg]hardened? 18 (CX)Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember, 19 when I broke (CY)the five loaves for the five thousand, how many (CZ)baskets full of broken pieces you picked up?” They *said to Him, “Twelve.” 20 “When I broke (DA)the seven for the four thousand, how many large (DB)baskets full of broken pieces did you pick up?” And they *said to Him, “Seven.” 21 And He was saying to them, (DC)Do you not yet understand?”

22 And they *came to (DD)Bethsaida. And some people *brought a man who was blind to [bh]Jesus and *begged Him to (DE)touch him. 23 Taking the man who was blind by the hand, He (DF)brought him out of the village; and after (DG)spitting in his eyes and (DH)laying His hands on him, He asked him, “Do you see anything?” 24 And he [bi]looked up and said, “I see people, for I see them like trees, walking around.” 25 Then again He laid His hands on his eyes; and he looked intently and was restored, and began to see everything clearly. 26 And He sent him to his home, saying, “Do not even enter (DI)the village.”

Peter’s Confession of Christ

27 (DJ)Jesus went out, along with His disciples, to the villages of (DK)Caesarea Philippi; and on the way He questioned His disciples, saying to them, “Who do people say that I am?” 28 (DL)They told Him, saying, “John the Baptist; and others say Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.” 29 And He continued questioning them: “But who do you say that I am?” (DM)Peter answered and *said to Him, “You are the [bj]Christ.” 30 And (DN)He [bk]warned them to tell no one about Him.

31 (DO)And He began to teach them that (DP)the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise from the dead. 32 And He was stating the matter (DQ)plainly. And Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. 33 But turning around and seeing His disciples, He rebuked Peter and *said, “Get behind Me, (DR)Satan; for you are not setting your mind on [bl]God’s purposes, but on man’s.”

34 And He summoned the crowd together with His disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself, (DS)take up his cross, and follow Me. 35 For (DT)whoever wants to save his [bm]life will lose it, but whoever loses his [bn]life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. 36 For what does it benefit a person to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul? 37 For what could a person give in exchange for his soul? 38 For (DU)whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, (DV)the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He (DW)comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”

The Transfiguration

And Jesus was saying to them, (DX)Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God when it has come with power.”

(DY)And six days later Jesus *took with Him (DZ)Peter, [bo]James, and John, and *brought them up on a high mountain by themselves. And He was [bp]transfigured before them; and (EA)His garments became radiant and exceedingly white, as no launderer on earth can whiten them. And Elijah appeared to them along with Moses; and they were talking with Jesus. Peter responded and *said to Jesus, “(EB)Rabbi, it is good that we are here; (EC)let’s make three [bq]tabernacles, one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” For he did not know how to reply; for they became terrified. Then a cloud [br]formed, overshadowing them, and (ED)a voice [bs]came out of the cloud: “(EE)This is My beloved Son; [bt]listen to Him!” And suddenly they looked around and saw no one with them anymore, except Jesus alone.

(EF)As they were coming down from the mountain, He (EG)gave them orders not to relate to anyone what they had seen, [bu]until the Son of Man rose from the dead. 10 They [bv]seized upon [bw]that statement, discussing with one another [bx]what rising from the dead meant. 11 And they asked Him, saying, “Why is it that the scribes say that (EH)Elijah must come first?” 12 And He said to them, “Elijah does come first and he restores all things. And yet how is it written of (EI)the Son of Man that (EJ)He will suffer many things and be treated with contempt? 13 But I say to you that Elijah has [by]indeed come, and they did to him whatever they wanted, just as it is written of him.”

All Things Possible

14 (EK)And when they came back to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them, and some scribes arguing with them. 15 Immediately, when the entire crowd saw Him, they were (EL)amazed and began running up to greet Him. 16 And He asked them, “What are you disputing with them?” 17 And one person from the crowd answered Him, “Teacher, I brought You my son, because he has a spirit that makes him unable to speak; 18 and [bz]whenever it seizes him, it slams him to the ground, and he foams at the mouth and grinds his teeth and becomes stiff. And I told Your disciples so that they would cast it out, but they could not do it.” 19 And He answered them and *said, “O unbelieving generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring him to Me!” 20 And they brought [ca]the boy to Him. When he saw Him, the spirit immediately threw him into convulsions, and falling to the ground, he began rolling around and foaming at the mouth. 21 And He asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. 22 It has often thrown him both into the fire and into the water to kill him. But if You can do anything, take pity on us and help us!” 23 But Jesus said to him, “‘If You can?’ (EM)All things are possible for the one who believes.” 24 Immediately the boy’s father cried out and said, “I do believe; help my unbelief!” 25 When Jesus saw that (EN)a crowd was [cb]rapidly gathering, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I [cc]command you, come out of him and do not enter him [cd]again!” 26 And after crying out and throwing him into terrible convulsions, it came out; and the boy became so much like a corpse that most of them said, “He is dead!” 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and raised him, and he got up. 28 When He came (EO)into the house, His disciples began asking Him privately, “Why is it that we could not cast it out?” 29 And He said to them, “This kind cannot come out by anything except prayer.”

Death and Resurrection Foretold

30 (EP)And from there they went out and began to go through Galilee, and He did not want anyone to know about it. 31 For He was teaching His disciples and telling them, (EQ)The Son of Man is to be [ce]handed over to men, and they will kill Him; and when He has been killed, He will rise three days later.” 32 But (ER)they [cf]did not understand this statement, and they were afraid to ask Him.

33 (ES)They came to Capernaum; and when He was in (ET)the house, He began to question them: “What were you discussing on the way?” 34 But they kept silent, for on the way (EU)they had discussed with one another which of them was the greatest. 35 And sitting down, He called the twelve and *said to them, (EV)If anyone wants to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.” 36 And He took a child and placed him among them, and taking him in His arms, He said to them, 37 (EW)Whoever [cg]receives [ch]one child like this in My name [ci]receives Me; and whoever [cj]receives Me does not [ck]receive Me, but Him who sent Me.”

Dire Warnings

38 (EX)John said to Him, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and (EY)we tried to prevent him because he was not following us.” 39 But Jesus said, “Do not hinder him, for there is no one who will perform a miracle in My name, and be able soon afterward to speak evil of Me. 40 (EZ)For the one who is not against us is [cl]for us. 41 For (FA)whoever gives you a cup of water to drink [cm]because of your name as followers of Christ, truly I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.

42 (FB)Whoever causes one of these [cn]little ones who believe in Me to [co]sin, it is better for him if a heavy millstone is hung around his neck and he [cp]is thrown into the sea. 43 And (FC)if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed, than, having your two hands, to go into [cq](FD)hell, into the (FE)unquenchable fire.[cr] 45 And if your foot is causing you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life without a foot, than, having your two feet, to be thrown into [cs](FF)hell.[ct] 47 And (FG)if your eye is causing you to sin, throw it away; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, than, having two eyes, to be thrown into [cu](FH)hell, 48 (FI)where their worm does not die, and (FJ)the fire is not extinguished. 49 For everyone will be salted with fire. 50 Salt is good; but (FK)if the salt becomes unsalty, with what will you [cv]make it salty again? (FL)Have salt in yourselves, and (FM)be at peace with one another.”

Jesus’ Teaching about Divorce

10 (FN)Setting out from there, Jesus *went to the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan; crowds *gathered to Him again, and, (FO)as He was accustomed, He once more began to teach them.

And some Pharisees came up to Jesus, testing Him, and began questioning Him whether it was lawful for a man to [cw]divorce his wife. And He answered and said to them, “What did Moses command you?” They said, “(FP)Moses permitted a man to write a [cx]certificate of divorce and [cy]send his wife away.” But Jesus said to them, [cz](FQ)Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment. But (FR)from the beginning of creation, God (FS)created them male and female. (FT)For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother[da], (FU)and the two shall become one flesh; so they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, no person is to separate.”

10 And in the house the disciples again began questioning Him about this. 11 And He *said to them, (FV)Whoever [db]divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her; 12 and (FW)if she herself [dc]divorces her husband and marries another man, she is committing adultery.”

Jesus Blesses Little Children

13 (FX)And they were bringing children to Him so that He would touch them; but the disciples rebuked them. 14 But when Jesus saw this, He was indignant and said to them, “Allow the children to come to Me; do not [dd]forbid them, (FY)for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 15 Truly I say to you, (FZ)whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all.” 16 And He (GA)took them in His arms and began blessing them, laying His hands on them.

The Rich Young Ruler

17 (GB)As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him and (GC)knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do so that I may (GD)inherit eternal life?” 18 But Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: ‘(GE)Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not give false testimony, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’” 20 And he said to Him, “Teacher, I have kept (GF)all these things from my youth.” 21 Looking at him, Jesus showed love to him and said to him, “One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you will have (GG)treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” 22 But he [de]was deeply dismayed by [df]these words, and he went away grieving; for he was one who owned much property.

23 And Jesus, looking around, *said to His disciples, (GH)How hard it will be for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God!” 24 And the disciples (GI)were amazed at His words. But Jesus responded again and *said to them, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25 (GJ)It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” 26 And they were even more astonished, and said to Him, “[dg]Then who can be saved?” 27 Looking at them, Jesus *said, (GK)With people it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God.”

28 (GL)Peter began to say to Him, “Behold, we have left everything and have followed You.” 29 Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, (GM)there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or farms, for My sake and for the gospel’s sake, 30 [dh]but that he will receive a hundred times as much now in [di]the present age, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms, along with persecutions; and in (GN)the age to come, eternal life. 31 But (GO)many who are first will be last, and the last, first.”

Jesus’ Sufferings Foretold

32 (GP)Now they were on the road going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking on ahead of them; and they (GQ)were amazed, and those who followed were fearful. And again He took the twelve aside and began to tell them what was going to happen to Him, 33 saying, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and (GR)the Son of Man will be [dj]handed over to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and will [dk]hand Him over to the Gentiles. 34 And they will mock Him and (GS)spit on Him, and flog Him and kill Him; and three days later He will rise from the dead.”

35 [dl](GT)James and John, the two sons of Zebedee, *came up to [dm]Jesus, saying to Him, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask of You.” 36 And He said to them, “What do you want Me to do for you?” 37 They said to Him, “[dn]Grant that we (GU)may sit, one on Your right and one on Your left, in Your glory.” 38 But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able (GV)to drink the cup that I drink, or (GW)to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” 39 They said to Him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink (GX)you shall drink; and you shall be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized. 40 But to sit on My right or on My left is not Mine to give; (GY)but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”

41 (GZ)Hearing this, the other ten began to feel indignant with [do]James and John. 42 Calling them to Himself, Jesus *said to them, “You know that those who are recognized as rulers of the Gentiles domineer over them; and their [dp]people in high position exercise authority over them. 43 But it is not this way among you; (HA)rather, whoever wants to become [dq]prominent among you shall be your servant; 44 and whoever wants to be first among you shall be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man (HB)did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His [dr]life as a ransom for many.”

Bartimaeus Receives His Sight

46 (HC)Then they *came to Jericho. And later, (HD)as He was leaving Jericho with His disciples and a large crowd, a beggar who was blind named Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the road. 47 And when he heard that it was Jesus the (HE)Nazarene, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, (HF)Son of David, have mercy on me!” 48 Many were sternly telling him to be quiet, but he kept crying out all the more, “(HG)Son of David, have mercy on me!” 49 And Jesus stopped and said, “Call him here.” So they *called the man who was blind, saying to him, “(HH)Take courage, stand up! He is calling for you.” 50 And throwing off his cloak, he jumped up and came to Jesus. 51 And replying to him, Jesus said, “What do you want Me to do for you?” And the man who was blind said to Him, “[ds](HI)Rabboni, I want to regain my sight!” 52 And Jesus said to him, “Go; (HJ)your faith has [dt]made you well.” And immediately he regained his sight and began following Him on the road.

The Triumphal Entry

11 (HK)And as they *approached Jerusalem, at Bethphage and (HL)Bethany, near (HM)the Mount of Olives, He *sent two of His disciples, and *said to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately as you enter it you will find a colt tied there, on which no one has ever sat; untie it and bring it here. And if anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of it’; and immediately he [du]will send it back here.” They went away and found a colt tied at the door, outside in the street; and they *untied it. And some of the bystanders were saying to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” And they told them just as Jesus had said, and they gave them permission. (HN)They *brought the colt to Jesus and *put their cloaks on it; and He sat on it. And many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches which they had cut from the fields. And those who went in front and those who followed were shouting:

[dv]Hosanna!
(HO)Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord;
10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David;
[dw]Hosanna (HP)in the highest!”

11 (HQ)And Jesus entered Jerusalem and came into the temple area; and after looking around at everything, (HR)He left for Bethany with the twelve, since it was already late.

12 (HS)On the next day, when they had left Bethany, He became hungry. 13 Seeing from a distance a fig tree in leaf, He went to see if perhaps He would find anything on it; and when He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. 14 And He said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again!” And His disciples were listening.

Jesus Drives Money Changers from the Temple

15 (HT)Then they *came to Jerusalem. And He entered the temple area and began to drive out those who were selling and buying on the temple grounds, and He overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling [dx]doves; 16 and He would not allow anyone to carry [dy]merchandise through the temple grounds. 17 And He began to teach and say to them, “Is it not written: ‘(HU)My house will be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? (HV)But you have made it a den of robbers.” 18 And the chief priests and the scribes heard this, and they (HW)began seeking how to put Him to death; for they were afraid of Him, because all (HX)the crowd was astonished at His teaching.

19 And (HY)whenever evening came, [dz]they would leave the city.

20 (HZ)As they were passing by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots up. 21 And being reminded, Peter *said to Him, “(IA)Rabbi, look, the fig tree that You cursed has withered.” 22 And Jesus answered and *said to them, (IB)Have faith in God. 23 (IC)Truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is going to happen, it will be granted to him. 24 Therefore, I say to you, (ID)all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they will be granted to you. 25 And whenever you (IE)stand praying, (IF)forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father who is in heaven will also forgive you for your [ea]offenses. 26 [[eb](IG)But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father who is in heaven forgive your [ec]offenses.”]

Jesus’ Authority Questioned

27 And they *came again to Jerusalem. (IH)And as He was walking in the temple area, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders *came to Him, 28 and began saying to Him, “By what authority are You doing these things, or who gave You this authority to do these things?” 29 But Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question, and you answer Me, and then I will tell you by what authority I do these things. 30 Was the baptism of John from heaven, or from men? Answer Me.” 31 And they began considering the implications among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’ 32 But should we say, ‘From men’?”—they were afraid of the [ed]people, for they all considered John to have been a real prophet. 33 Answering Jesus, they *said, “We do not know.” And Jesus *said to them, “Neither am I telling you by what authority I do these things.”

A Prophet Without Honor(A)

Jesus left there and went to his hometown,(B) accompanied by his disciples. When the Sabbath came,(C) he began to teach in the synagogue,(D) and many who heard him were amazed.(E)

“Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph,[a] Judas and Simon?(F) Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.(G)

Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.”(H) He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on(I) a few sick people and heal them. He was amazed at their lack of faith.

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve(J)

Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village.(K) Calling the Twelve to him,(L) he began to send them out two by two(M) and gave them authority over impure spirits.(N)

These were his instructions: “Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. Wear sandals but not an extra shirt. 10 Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town. 11 And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet(O) as a testimony against them.”

12 They went out and preached that people should repent.(P) 13 They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil(Q) and healed them.

John the Baptist Beheaded(R)(S)

14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying,[b] “John the Baptist(T) has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”

15 Others said, “He is Elijah.”(U)

And still others claimed, “He is a prophet,(V) like one of the prophets of long ago.”(W)

16 But when Herod heard this, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!”

17 For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison.(X) He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, whom he had married. 18 For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”(Y) 19 So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to, 20 because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man.(Z) When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled[c]; yet he liked to listen to him.

21 Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet(AA) for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee.(AB) 22 When the daughter of[d] Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests.

The king said to the girl, “Ask me for anything you want, and I’ll give it to you.” 23 And he promised her with an oath, “Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”(AC)

24 She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?”

“The head of John the Baptist,” she answered.

25 At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: “I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”

26 The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her. 27 So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison, 28 and brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother. 29 On hearing of this, John’s disciples came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(AD)(AE)

30 The apostles(AF) gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught.(AG) 31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat,(AH) he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”

32 So they went away by themselves in a boat(AI) to a solitary place. 33 But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. 34 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd.(AJ) So he began teaching them many things.

35 By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. “This is a remote place,” they said, “and it’s already very late. 36 Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.”

37 But he answered, “You give them something to eat.”(AK)

They said to him, “That would take more than half a year’s wages[e]! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?”

38 “How many loaves do you have?” he asked. “Go and see.”

When they found out, they said, “Five—and two fish.”(AL)

39 Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. 41 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves.(AM) Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. 42 They all ate and were satisfied, 43 and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. 44 The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand.

Jesus Walks on the Water(AN)(AO)

45 Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat(AP) and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida,(AQ) while he dismissed the crowd. 46 After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray.(AR)

47 Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land. 48 He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them, 49 but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost.(AS) They cried out, 50 because they all saw him and were terrified.

Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”(AT) 51 Then he climbed into the boat(AU) with them, and the wind died down.(AV) They were completely amazed, 52 for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.(AW)

53 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there.(AX) 54 As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus. 55 They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. 56 And wherever he went—into villages, towns or countryside—they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak,(AY) and all who touched it were healed.

That Which Defiles(AZ)

The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus and saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were defiled,(BA) that is, unwashed. (The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders.(BB) When they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers and kettles.[f])(BC)

So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, “Why don’t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders(BD) instead of eating their food with defiled hands?”

He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written:

“‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules.’[g](BE)

You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.”(BF)

And he continued, “You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe[h] your own traditions!(BG) 10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and mother,’[i](BH) and, ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’[j](BI) 11 But you say(BJ) that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God)— 12 then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother. 13 Thus you nullify the word of God(BK) by your tradition(BL) that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.”

14 Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen to me, everyone, and understand this. 15 Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them.” [16] [k]

17 After he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him(BM) about this parable. 18 “Are you so dull?” he asked. “Don’t you see that nothing that enters a person from the outside can defile them? 19 For it doesn’t go into their heart but into their stomach, and then out of the body.” (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods(BN) clean.)(BO)

20 He went on: “What comes out of a person is what defiles them. 21 For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, 22 adultery, greed,(BP) malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. 23 All these evils come from inside and defile a person.”

Jesus Honors a Syrophoenician Woman’s Faith(BQ)

24 Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre.[l](BR) He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep his presence secret. 25 In fact, as soon as she heard about him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an impure spirit(BS) came and fell at his feet. 26 The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter.

27 “First let the children eat all they want,” he told her, “for it is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”

28 “Lord,” she replied, “even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”

29 Then he told her, “For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter.”

30 She went home and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.

Jesus Heals a Deaf and Mute Man(BT)

31 Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre(BU) and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee(BV) and into the region of the Decapolis.[m](BW) 32 There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk,(BX) and they begged Jesus to place his hand on(BY) him.

33 After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then he spit(BZ) and touched the man’s tongue. 34 He looked up to heaven(CA) and with a deep sigh(CB) said to him, “Ephphatha!” (which means “Be opened!”). 35 At this, the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly.(CC)

36 Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone.(CD) But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. 37 People were overwhelmed with amazement. “He has done everything well,” they said. “He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand(CE)(CF)(CG)

During those days another large crowd gathered. Since they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion for these people;(CH) they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, because some of them have come a long distance.”

His disciples answered, “But where in this remote place can anyone get enough bread to feed them?”

“How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked.

“Seven,” they replied.

He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. When he had taken the seven loaves and given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people, and they did so. They had a few small fish as well; he gave thanks for them also and told the disciples to distribute them.(CI) The people ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.(CJ) About four thousand were present. After he had sent them away, 10 he got into the boat with his disciples and went to the region of Dalmanutha.

11 The Pharisees came and began to question Jesus. To test him, they asked him for a sign from heaven.(CK) 12 He sighed deeply(CL) and said, “Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to it.” 13 Then he left them, got back into the boat and crossed to the other side.

The Yeast of the Pharisees and Herod

14 The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat. 15 “Be careful,” Jesus warned them. “Watch out for the yeast(CM) of the Pharisees(CN) and that of Herod.”(CO)

16 They discussed this with one another and said, “It is because we have no bread.”

17 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened?(CP) 18 Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember? 19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”

“Twelve,”(CQ) they replied.

20 “And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”

They answered, “Seven.”(CR)

21 He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”(CS)

Jesus Heals a Blind Man at Bethsaida

22 They came to Bethsaida,(CT) and some people brought a blind man(CU) and begged Jesus to touch him. 23 He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit(CV) on the man’s eyes and put his hands on(CW) him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?”

24 He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.”

25 Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. 26 Jesus sent him home, saying, “Don’t even go into[n] the village.”

Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah(CX)

27 Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?”

28 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist;(CY) others say Elijah;(CZ) and still others, one of the prophets.”

29 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.”(DA)

30 Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.(DB)

Jesus Predicts His Death(DC)

31 He then began to teach them that the Son of Man(DD) must suffer many things(DE) and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,(DF) and that he must be killed(DG) and after three days(DH) rise again.(DI) 32 He spoke plainly(DJ) about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.

33 But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!”(DK) he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

The Way of the Cross

34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.(DL) 35 For whoever wants to save their life[o] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.(DM) 36 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man(DN) will be ashamed of them(DO) when he comes(DP) in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”

And he said to them, “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see that the kingdom of God has come(DQ) with power.”(DR)

The Transfiguration(DS)(DT)

After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John(DU) with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them. His clothes became dazzling white,(DV) whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus.

Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi,(DW) it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.)

Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud:(DX) “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!”(DY)

Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.

As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone(DZ) what they had seen until the Son of Man(EA) had risen from the dead. 10 They kept the matter to themselves, discussing what “rising from the dead” meant.

11 And they asked him, “Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”

12 Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah does come first, and restores all things. Why then is it written that the Son of Man(EB) must suffer much(EC) and be rejected?(ED) 13 But I tell you, Elijah has come,(EE) and they have done to him everything they wished, just as it is written about him.”

Jesus Heals a Boy Possessed by an Impure Spirit(EF)

14 When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them. 15 As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him.

16 “What are you arguing with them about?” he asked.

17 A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. 18 Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not.”

19 “You unbelieving generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.”

20 So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.(EG)

21 Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?”

“From childhood,” he answered. 22 “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.”

23 “‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.”(EH)

24 Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”

25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene,(EI) he rebuked the impure spirit. “You deaf and mute spirit,” he said, “I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”

26 The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, “He’s dead.” 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up.

28 After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately,(EJ) “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”

29 He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer.[p]

Jesus Predicts His Death a Second Time(EK)

30 They left that place and passed through Galilee. Jesus did not want anyone to know where they were, 31 because he was teaching his disciples. He said to them, “The Son of Man(EL) is going to be delivered into the hands of men. They will kill him,(EM) and after three days(EN) he will rise.”(EO) 32 But they did not understand what he meant(EP) and were afraid to ask him about it.

33 They came to Capernaum.(EQ) When he was in the house,(ER) he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?” 34 But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest.(ES)

35 Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.”(ET)

36 He took a little child whom he placed among them. Taking the child in his arms,(EU) he said to them, 37 “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.”(EV)

Whoever Is Not Against Us Is for Us(EW)

38 “Teacher,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we told him to stop, because he was not one of us.”(EX)

39 “Do not stop him,” Jesus said. “For no one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me, 40 for whoever is not against us is for us.(EY) 41 Truly I tell you, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to the Messiah will certainly not lose their reward.(EZ)

Causing to Stumble

42 “If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble,(FA) it would be better for them if a large millstone were hung around their neck and they were thrown into the sea.(FB) 43 If your hand causes you to stumble,(FC) cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell,(FD) where the fire never goes out.(FE) [44] [q] 45 And if your foot causes you to stumble,(FF) cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell.(FG) [46] [r] 47 And if your eye causes you to stumble,(FH) pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell,(FI) 48 where

“‘the worms that eat them do not die,
and the fire is not quenched.’[s](FJ)

49 Everyone will be salted(FK) with fire.

50 “Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it salty again?(FL) Have salt among yourselves,(FM) and be at peace with each other.”(FN)

Divorce(FO)

10 Jesus then left that place and went into the region of Judea and across the Jordan.(FP) Again crowds of people came to him, and as was his custom, he taught them.(FQ)

Some Pharisees(FR) came and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?”

“What did Moses command you?” he replied.

They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away.”(FS)

“It was because your hearts were hard(FT) that Moses wrote you this law,” Jesus replied. “But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’[t](FU) ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife,[u] and the two will become one flesh.’[v](FV) So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

10 When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this. 11 He answered, “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her.(FW) 12 And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.”(FX)

The Little Children and Jesus(FY)

13 People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. 14 When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.(FZ) 15 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”(GA) 16 And he took the children in his arms,(GB) placed his hands on them and blessed them.

The Rich and the Kingdom of God(GC)

17 As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees(GD) before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”(GE)

18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.’[w](GF)

20 “Teacher,” he declared, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.”

21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor,(GG) and you will have treasure in heaven.(GH) Then come, follow me.”(GI)

22 At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.

23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich(GJ) to enter the kingdom of God!”

24 The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, “Children, how hard it is[x] to enter the kingdom of God!(GK) 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”(GL)

26 The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, “Who then can be saved?”

27 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.”(GM)

28 Then Peter spoke up, “We have left everything to follow you!”(GN)

29 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel 30 will fail to receive a hundred times as much(GO) in this present age: homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields—along with persecutions—and in the age to come(GP) eternal life.(GQ) 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”(GR)

Jesus Predicts His Death a Third Time(GS)

32 They were on their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesus leading the way, and the disciples were astonished, while those who followed were afraid. Again he took the Twelve(GT) aside and told them what was going to happen to him. 33 “We are going up to Jerusalem,”(GU) he said, “and the Son of Man(GV) will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law.(GW) They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles, 34 who will mock him and spit on him, flog him(GX) and kill him.(GY) Three days later(GZ) he will rise.”(HA)

The Request of James and John(HB)

35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.”

36 “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked.

37 They replied, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.”(HC)

38 “You don’t know what you are asking,”(HD) Jesus said. “Can you drink the cup(HE) I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?”(HF)

39 “We can,” they answered.

Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with,(HG) 40 but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared.”

41 When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John. 42 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,(HH) 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve,(HI) and to give his life as a ransom for many.”(HJ)

Blind Bartimaeus Receives His Sight(HK)

46 Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (which means “son of Timaeus”), was sitting by the roadside begging. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth,(HL) he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David,(HM) have mercy on me!”

48 Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.”

So they called to the blind man, “Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.” 50 Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus.

51 “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him.

The blind man said, “Rabbi,(HN) I want to see.”

52 “Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.”(HO) Immediately he received his sight and followed(HP) Jesus along the road.

Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King(HQ)(HR)

11 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany(HS) at the Mount of Olives,(HT) Jesus sent two of his disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden.(HU) Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’”

They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway.(HV) As they untied it, some people standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted,

“Hosanna![y]

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”[z](HW)

10 “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!”

“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”(HX)

11 Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.(HY)

Jesus Curses a Fig Tree and Clears the Temple Courts(HZ)(IA)(IB)

12 The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs.(IC) 14 Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.

15 On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, 16 and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. 17 And as he taught them, he said, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’[aa]?(ID) But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’[ab](IE)
