On the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue. Many people were there; and when they heard him, they were all amazed. “Where did he get all this?” they asked. “What wisdom is this that has been given him? How does he perform miracles? Isn't he the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon? Aren't his sisters living here?” And so they rejected him.

(A)Jesus said to them, “Prophets are respected everywhere except in their own hometown and by their relatives and their family.”

“Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph,[a] Judas and Simon?(D) Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.(E)

Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.”(F)
