A Man with a Withered Hand

3 (A)Again (B)he entered the synagogue, and a man was there with a withered hand. 2 And (C)they watched Jesus,[a] to see whether he would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse him. 3 And he said to the man with the withered hand, “Come here.” 4 And he said to them, (D)“Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill?” But they were silent. 5 And he (E)looked around at them with anger, grieved at (F)their hardness of heart, and said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” (G)He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. 6 (H)The Pharisees went out and immediately (I)held counsel with (J)the Herodians against him, how to destroy him.

A Great Crowd Follows Jesus

7 (K)Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the sea, and (L)a great crowd followed, from Galilee and Judea 8 and Jerusalem and (M)Idumea and from beyond the Jordan and from around (N)Tyre and Sidon. When the great crowd heard all that he was doing, they came to him. 9 And he told his disciples to (O)have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, lest they (P)crush him, 10 for (Q)he had healed many, so that all who had (R)diseases pressed around him (S)to touch him. 11 (T)And whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they (U)fell down before him and cried out, “You are (V)the Son of God.” 12 And (W)he strictly ordered them not to make him known.

The Twelve Apostles

13 (X)And he went up on the mountain and called to him those (Y)whom he desired, and they came to him. 14 (Z)And he appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach 15 (AA)and have authority to cast out demons. 16 He appointed the twelve: (AB)Simon (to whom (AC)he gave the name Peter); 17 (AD)James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James (to whom he gave the name Boanerges, that is, Sons of Thunder); 18 Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and (AE)Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Zealot,[b] 19 and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

20 Then he went (AF)home, and the crowd gathered again, (AG)so that they could not even eat. 21 (AH)And when (AI)his family heard it, they went out to seize him, for they were saying, “He (AJ)is out of his mind.”

Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit

22 And (AK)the scribes who came down from Jerusalem were saying, (AL)“He is possessed by Beelzebul,” and “by the prince of demons he casts out the demons.” 23 (AM)And he called them to him and said to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan? 24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. 26 And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but is coming to an end. 27 But (AN)no one can enter a strong man's house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. (AO)Then indeed he may plunder his house.

28 (AP)“Truly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the children of man, and whatever blasphemies they utter, 29 but whoever (AQ)blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin”— 30 for they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.”

Jesus' Mother and Brothers

31 (AR)And his mother and his (AS)brothers came, and standing outside they sent to him and called him. 32 And a crowd was sitting around him, and they said to him, “Your mother and your brothers[c] are outside, seeking you.” 33 And he answered them, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” 34 And (AT)looking about at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! 35 (AU)For whoever (AV)does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother.”

The Parable of the Sower

4 Again (AW)he began to teach beside the sea. And a very large crowd gathered about him, (AX)so that he got into a boat and sat in it on the sea, and the whole crowd was beside the sea on the land. 2 And (AY)he was teaching them many things in parables, and in his teaching he said to them: 3 “Listen! Behold, (AZ)a sower went out to sow. 4 And as he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured it. 5 Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and immediately it sprang up, since it had no depth of soil. 6 And (BA)when the sun rose, it was scorched, and since it had no root, (BB)it withered away. 7 Other seed fell among (BC)thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain. 8 And other seeds fell into good soil and produced grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirtyfold and sixtyfold and (BD)a hundredfold.” 9 And he said, (BE)“He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

The Purpose of the Parables

10 And (BF)when he was alone, those around him with the twelve asked him about the parables. 11 And he said to them, (BG)“To you has been given (BH)the secret of the kingdom of God, but for (BI)those outside everything is in parables, 12 (BJ)so that

“‘they (BK)may indeed see but not perceive,
    and may indeed hear but not understand,
lest they (BL)should turn and be forgiven.’”

13 (BM)And he said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables? 14 (BN)The sower sows (BO)the word. 15 And these are the ones along the path, where the word is sown: when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is sown in them. 16 And these are the ones sown on rocky ground: the ones who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it (BP)with joy. 17 And they have no root in themselves, but (BQ)endure for a while; then, when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately (BR)they fall away.[d] 18 And others are the ones sown among thorns. They are those who hear the word, 19 but (BS)the cares of (BT)the world and (BU)the deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. 20 But those that were sown on the good soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and (BV)bear fruit, (BW)thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.”

A Lamp Under a Basket

21 (BX)And he said to them, (BY)“Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket, or under a bed, and not on a stand? 22 (BZ)For nothing is hidden except to be made manifest; nor is anything secret except to come to light. 23 (CA)If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.” 24 And he said to them, “Pay attention to what you hear: (CB)with the measure you use, it will be measured to you, and still more will be added to you. 25 (CC)For to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.”

The Parable of the Seed Growing

26 And he said, (CD)“The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. 27 He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; (CE)he knows not how. 28 The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. 29 But when the grain is ripe, at once (CF)he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”

The Parable of the Mustard Seed

30 (CG)And he said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use for it? 31 It is like (CH)a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown on the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth, 32 yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and puts out large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.”

33 (CI)With many such parables he spoke (CJ)the word to them, (CK)as they were able to hear it. 34 He did not speak to them (CL)without a parable, but (CM)privately to his own disciples he (CN)explained everything.

Jesus Calms a Storm

35 (CO)On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” 36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves (CP)were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” 39 And he awoke and (CQ)rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and (CR)there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you (CS)so afraid? Have you still no faith?” 41 And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, (CT)“Who then is this, that even (CU)the wind and the sea obey him?”

Jesus Heals a Man with a Demon

5 (CV)They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes.[e] 2 And when Jesus[f] had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit. 3 (CW)He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain, 4 for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him. 5 Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones. 6 And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and (CX)fell down before him. 7 And (CY)crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, (CZ)Son of (DA)the Most High God? (DB)I adjure you by God, do not torment me.” 8 For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” 9 And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is (DC)Legion, for we are many.” 10 And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country. 11 Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, 12 and they begged him, saying, “Send us to the pigs; let us enter them.” 13 So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the sea.

14 The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened. 15 And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed[g] man, the one who had had (DD)the legion, sitting there, (DE)clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. 16 And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs. 17 And (DF)they began to beg Jesus[h] to depart from their region. 18 As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him. 19 And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and (DG)tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” 20 And he went away and began to proclaim in (DH)the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled.

Jesus Heals a Woman and Jairus's Daughter

21 And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea. 22 (DI)Then came one of (DJ)the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet 23 and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and (DK)lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.” 24 And he went with him.

And a great crowd followed him and (DL)thronged about him. 25 And there was a woman (DM)who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, 26 and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. 27 She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. 28 For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.” 29 (DN)And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her (DO)disease. 30 And Jesus, perceiving in himself that (DP)power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?” 31 And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’” 32 And he looked around to see who had done it. 33 But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. 34 And he said to her, “Daughter, (DQ)your faith has made you well; (DR)go in peace, and be healed of your (DS)disease.”

35 While he was still speaking, there came from (DT)the ruler's house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why (DU)trouble (DV)the Teacher any further?” 36 But overhearing[i] what they said, Jesus said to (DW)the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.” 37 And he allowed no one to follow him except (DX)Peter and James and (DY)John the brother of James. 38 They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus[j] saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. 39 And when he had entered, he said to them, (DZ)“Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but (EA)sleeping.” 40 And they laughed at him. But he (EB)put them all outside and took the child's father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was. 41 (EC)Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, (ED)arise.” 42 And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement. 43 And (EE)he strictly charged them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

6 (EF)He went away from there and came to (EG)his hometown, and his disciples followed him. 2 And (EH)on the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and (EI)many who heard him were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things? What is the wisdom given to him? How are such mighty works done by his hands? 3 (EJ)Is not this (EK)the carpenter, the son of Mary and (EL)brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And (EM)they took offense at him. 4 And Jesus said to them, (EN)“A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his own household.” 5 And (EO)he could do no mighty work there, except that (EP)he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them. 6 And (EQ)he marveled because of their unbelief.

(ER)And he went about among the villages teaching.

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles

7 (ES)And he called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. 8 He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in their belts— 9 but to (ET)wear sandals and not put on two tunics.[k] 10 And he said to them, “Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you depart from there. 11 And if any place will not receive you and they will not listen to you, when you leave, (EU)shake off the dust that is on your feet (EV)as a testimony against them.” 12 (EW)So they went out and (EX)proclaimed (EY)that people should repent. 13 (EZ)And they cast out many demons and (FA)anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them.

The Death of John the Baptist

14 (FB)King Herod heard of it, for Jesus'[l] name had become known. Some[m] said, (FC)“John the Baptist[n] has been raised from the dead. That is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.” 15 (FD)But others said, “He is Elijah.” And others said, “He is (FE)a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.” 16 But when Herod heard of it, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised.” 17 (FF)For it was Herod who had sent and seized John and (FG)bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, because he had married her. 18 (FH)For John had been saying to Herod, (FI)“It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife.” 19 And Herodias had a grudge against him and wanted to put him to death. But she could not, 20 for Herod (FJ)feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed, and yet he (FK)heard him gladly.

21 But an opportunity came when Herod (FL)on his birthday (FM)gave a banquet for his nobles and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee. 22 For when Herodias's daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. And the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it to you.” 23 And he vowed to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give you, (FN)up to half of my kingdom.” 24 And she went out and said to her mother, “For what should I ask?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist.” 25 And she came in immediately with haste to the king and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.” 26 And the king was exceedingly sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he did not want to break his word to her. 27 And immediately the king sent an executioner with orders to bring John's[o] head. He went and beheaded him in the prison 28 and brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother. 29 When his (FO)disciples heard of it, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

30 (FP)(FQ)The apostles returned to Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught. 31 And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and (FR)they had no leisure even to eat. 32 (FS)And they went away in (FT)the boat to a desolate place by themselves. 33 Now many saw them going and (FU)recognized them, and they ran there on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. 34 When he went ashore he (FV)saw a great crowd, and (FW)he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things. 35 And when it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the hour is now late. 36 (FX)Send them away to go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.” 37 But he answered them, (FY)“You give them something to eat.” And (FZ)they said to him, (GA)“Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii[p] worth of bread and give it to them to eat?” 38 And he said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they had found out, they said, (GB)“Five, and two fish.” 39 Then he commanded them all to sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in groups, by hundreds and by fifties. 41 And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he (GC)looked up to heaven and (GD)said a blessing and broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the people. And he divided the two fish among them all. 42 And they all ate and were satisfied. 43 And they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish. 44 And those who ate the loaves were five thousand men.

Jesus Walks on the Water

45 (GE)Immediately he (GF)made his disciples get into (GG)the boat and go before him to the other side, (GH)to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. 46 And after he had taken leave of them, (GI)he went up on the mountain to pray. 47 And when (GJ)evening came, the boat was out on the sea, and he was alone on the land. 48 And he saw that they were making headway painfully, for the wind was against them. And about (GK)the fourth watch of the night[q] he came to them, walking on the sea. (GL)He meant to pass by them, 49 but when they saw him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost, and cried out, 50 for they all saw him and (GM)were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them and said, (GN)“Take heart; it is I. (GO)Do not be afraid.” 51 And he got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. And they were utterly astounded, 52 for (GP)they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts (GQ)were hardened.

Jesus Heals the Sick in Gennesaret

53 (GR)When they had crossed over, they came to land at (GS)Gennesaret and moored to the shore. 54 And when they got out of the boat, the people immediately (GT)recognized him 55 and ran about the whole region and began to bring (GU)the sick people (GV)on their beds to wherever they heard he was. 56 And wherever he came, in villages, cities, or countryside, (GW)they laid the sick in the marketplaces and implored him that they might touch even (GX)the fringe of his garment. And (GY)as many as touched it were made well.

Traditions and Commandments

7 (GZ)Now when the Pharisees gathered to him, with some of the scribes (HA)who had come from Jerusalem, 2 they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands that were (HB)defiled, that is, unwashed. 3 (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands properly,[r] holding to (HC)the tradition of (HD)the elders, 4 and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash.[s] And there are many other traditions that they observe, such as (HE)the washing of (HF)cups and pots and copper vessels and dining couches.[t]) 5 And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not walk according to (HG)the tradition of (HH)the elders, (HI)but eat with (HJ)defiled hands?” 6 And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you (HK)hypocrites, as it is written,

(HL)“‘This people honors me with their lips,
    but their heart is far from me;
7 in vain do they worship me,
    teaching as (HM)doctrines the commandments of men.’

8 You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.”

9 And he said to them, “You have a fine way of (HN)rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition! 10 For Moses said, (HO)‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, (HP)‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ 11 But you say, ‘If a man tells his father or his mother, “Whatever you would have gained from me is Corban”’ (that is, given to God)[u]— 12 then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother, 13 thus (HQ)making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do.”

What Defiles a Person

14 And he called the people to him again and said to them, (HR)“Hear me, all of you, and understand: 15 (HS)There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.”[v] 17 And when he had entered (HT)the house and left the people, (HU)his disciples asked him about the parable. 18 And he said to them, “Then (HV)are you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him, 19 since it enters not his heart (HW)but his stomach, and is expelled?”[w] ((HX)Thus he declared all foods clean.) 20 And he said, (HY)“What comes out of a person is what defiles him. 21 For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, (HZ)murder, adultery, 22 coveting, wickedness, deceit, (IA)sensuality, (IB)envy, (IC)slander, (ID)pride, (IE)foolishness. 23 (IF)All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”

The Syrophoenician Woman's Faith

24 And from there he arose and went away to the region of Tyre and Sidon.[x] And he entered a house and did not want anyone to know, yet he could not be hidden. 25 But immediately a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit heard of him and came and fell down at his feet. 26 (IG)Now the woman was a (IH)Gentile, (II)a Syrophoenician by birth. And she begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter. 27 And he said to her, “Let the children be (IJ)fed first, for it is not right to take the children's bread and (IK)throw it to the dogs.” 28 But she answered him, “Yes, Lord; yet even the dogs under the table eat the children's (IL)crumbs.” 29 And he said to her, “For this statement you may (IM)go your way; the demon has left your daughter.” 30 And she went home and found the child lying in bed and the demon gone.

Jesus Heals a Deaf Man

31 (IN)Then he returned from the region of Tyre and went through Sidon to (IO)the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the (IP)Decapolis. 32 And they brought to him (IQ)a man who was deaf and (IR)had a speech impediment, and they begged him to (IS)lay his hand on him. 33 And (IT)taking him aside from the crowd privately, he put his fingers into his ears, and (IU)after spitting touched his tongue. 34 And (IV)looking up to heaven, (IW)he sighed and said to him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.” 35 (IX)And his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. 36 And (IY)Jesus[y] charged them to tell no one. But (IZ)the more he charged them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. 37 And they were (JA)astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand

8 (JB)In those days, when again a great crowd had gathered, and they had nothing to eat, he called his disciples to him and said to them, 2 (JC)“I have compassion on the crowd, because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. 3 And if I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way. And some of them have come from far away.” 4 And his disciples answered him, “How can one feed these people with bread here in this desolate place?” 5 And he asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, (JD)“Seven.” 6 And he directed the crowd to sit down on the ground. And he took the seven loaves, and (JE)having given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to set before the people; and they set them before the crowd. 7 And they had a few small fish. And (JF)having blessed them, he said that these also should be set before them. 8 And (JG)they ate and were satisfied. And they took up the broken pieces left over, (JH)seven baskets full. 9 And there were about four thousand people. And he sent them away. 10 And immediately he got into (JI)the boat with his disciples and went to the district of (JJ)Dalmanutha.[z]

The Pharisees Demand a Sign

11 (JK)The Pharisees came and began to argue with him, (JL)seeking from him (JM)a sign from heaven (JN)to test him. 12 And (JO)he sighed deeply (JP)in his spirit and said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.” 13 And (JQ)he left them, got into the boat again, and went to the other side.

The Leaven of the Pharisees and Herod

14 Now they had forgotten to bring bread, and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. 15 And he cautioned them, saying, “Watch out; (JR)beware of (JS)the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of (JT)Herod.”[aa] 16 And they began discussing with one another the fact that they had no bread. 17 And (JU)Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why are you discussing the fact that you have no bread? (JV)Do you not yet perceive (JW)or understand? (JX)Are your hearts hardened? 18 (JY)Having eyes do you not see, and having ears do you not hear? And do you not remember? 19 When I broke (JZ)the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” They said to him, “Twelve.” 20 “And (KA)the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” And they said to him, “Seven.” 21 And he said to them, “Do you not yet understand?”

Jesus Heals a Blind Man at Bethsaida

22 And they came (KB)to Bethsaida. And some people brought to him a blind man and begged him to touch him. 23 And (KC)he took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village, and when (KD)he had (KE)spit on his eyes and (KF)laid his hands on him, he asked him, “Do you see anything?” 24 And he looked up and said, “I see people, but they look like trees, walking.” 25 Then Jesus[ab] laid his hands on his eyes again; and he opened his eyes, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. 26 And he sent him to his home, saying, (KG)“Do not even enter the village.”

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

27 (KH)And Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” 28 And they told him, (KI)“John the Baptist; and others say, (KJ)Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.” 29 And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, (KK)“You are (KL)the Christ.” 30 (KM)And he strictly charged them to tell no one about him.

Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection

31 (KN)And he began to teach them that (KO)the Son of Man must (KP)suffer many things and (KQ)be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and (KR)after three days rise again. 32 And he said this (KS)plainly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, (KT)“Get behind me, Satan! For you (KU)are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

34 And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him (KV)deny himself and (KW)take up his cross and follow me. 35 For (KX)whoever would save his life[ac] will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake (KY)and the gospel's will save it. 36 (KZ)For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? 37 For (LA)what can a man give in return for his soul? 38 For (LB)whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this (LC)adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed (LD)when he comes in the glory of his Father with (LE)the holy angels.”

9 And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not (LF)taste death (LG)until they see the kingdom of God after it has come (LH)with power.”

Jesus Heals on the Sabbath

3 Another time Jesus went into the synagogue,(A) and a man with a shriveled hand was there. 2 Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely(B) to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath.(C) 3 Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Stand up in front of everyone.”

4 Then Jesus asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” But they remained silent.

5 He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored. 6 Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodians(D) how they might kill Jesus.(E)

Crowds Follow Jesus(F)

7 Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the lake, and a large crowd from Galilee followed.(G) 8 When they heard about all he was doing, many people came to him from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, and the regions across the Jordan and around Tyre and Sidon.(H) 9 Because of the crowd he told his disciples to have a small boat ready for him, to keep the people from crowding him. 10 For he had healed many,(I) so that those with diseases were pushing forward to touch him.(J) 11 Whenever the impure spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.”(K) 12 But he gave them strict orders not to tell others about him.(L)

Jesus Appoints the Twelve(M)

13 Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him.(N) 14 He appointed twelve[a](O) that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach 15 and to have authority to drive out demons.(P) 16 These are the twelve he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter),(Q) 17 James son of Zebedee and his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means “sons of thunder”), 18 Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot 19 and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

Jesus Accused by His Family and by Teachers of the Law(R)(S)

20 Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd gathered,(T) so that he and his disciples were not even able to eat.(U) 21 When his family[b] heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.”(V)

22 And the teachers of the law who came down from Jerusalem(W) said, “He is possessed by Beelzebul!(X) By the prince of demons he is driving out demons.”(Y)

23 So Jesus called them over to him and began to speak to them in parables:(Z) “How can Satan(AA) drive out Satan? 24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. 26 And if Satan opposes himself and is divided, he cannot stand; his end has come. 27 In fact, no one can enter a strong man’s house without first tying him up. Then he can plunder the strong man’s house.(AB) 28 Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter, 29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin.”(AC)

30 He said this because they were saying, “He has an impure spirit.”

31 Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived.(AD) Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him. 32 A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, “Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you.”

33 “Who are my mother and my brothers?” he asked.

34 Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! 35 Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”

The Parable of the Sower(AE)(AF)

4 Again Jesus began to teach by the lake.(AG) The crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the lake, while all the people were along the shore at the water’s edge. 2 He taught them many things by parables,(AH) and in his teaching said: 3 “Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed.(AI) 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, some multiplying thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times.”(AJ)

9 Then Jesus said, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”(AK)

10 When he was alone, the Twelve and the others around him asked him about the parables. 11 He told them, “The secret of the kingdom of God(AL) has been given to you. But to those on the outside(AM) everything is said in parables 12 so that,

“‘they may be ever seeing but never perceiving,
    and ever hearing but never understanding;
otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!’[c]”(AN)

13 Then Jesus said to them, “Don’t you understand this parable? How then will you understand any parable? 14 The farmer sows the word.(AO) 15 Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan(AP) comes and takes away the word that was sown in them. 16 Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy. 17 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 18 Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; 19 but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth(AQ) and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. 20 Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop—some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times what was sown.”

A Lamp on a Stand

21 He said to them, “Do you bring in a lamp to put it under a bowl or a bed? Instead, don’t you put it on its stand?(AR) 22 For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open.(AS) 23 If anyone has ears to hear, let them hear.”(AT)

24 “Consider carefully what you hear,” he continued. “With the measure you use, it will be measured to you—and even more.(AU) 25 Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.”(AV)

The Parable of the Growing Seed

26 He also said, “This is what the kingdom of God is like.(AW) A man scatters seed on the ground. 27 Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. 28 All by itself the soil produces grain—first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head. 29 As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come.”(AX)

The Parable of the Mustard Seed(AY)

30 Again he said, “What shall we say the kingdom of God is like,(AZ) or what parable shall we use to describe it? 31 It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. 32 Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.”

33 With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand.(BA) 34 He did not say anything to them without using a parable.(BB) But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.

Jesus Calms the Storm(BC)

35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat.(BD) There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”(BE)

41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

Jesus Restores a Demon-Possessed Man(BF)(BG)

5 They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes.[d] 2 When Jesus got out of the boat,(BH) a man with an impure spirit(BI) came from the tombs to meet him. 3 This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain. 4 For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. 5 Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.

6 When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him. 7 He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me,(BJ) Jesus, Son of the Most High God?(BK) In God’s name don’t torture me!” 8 For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you impure spirit!”

9 Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”

“My name is Legion,”(BL) he replied, “for we are many.” 10 And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.

11 A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside. 12 The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.” 13 He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.

14 Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. 15 When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion(BM) of demons,(BN) sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 16 Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man—and told about the pigs as well. 17 Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.

18 As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. 19 Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them(BO) how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” 20 So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis[e](BP) how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.

Jesus Raises a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman(BQ)

21 When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake,(BR) a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake.(BS) 22 Then one of the synagogue leaders,(BT) named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet. 23 He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on(BU) her so that she will be healed and live.” 24 So Jesus went with him.

A large crowd followed and pressed around him. 25 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding(BV) for twelve years. 26 She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. 27 When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, 28 because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes,(BW) I will be healed.” 29 Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.(BX)

30 At once Jesus realized that power(BY) had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”

31 “You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’ ”

32 But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. 33 Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. 34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you.(BZ) Go in peace(CA) and be freed from your suffering.”

35 While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader.(CB) “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher anymore?”

36 Overhearing[f] what they said, Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”

37 He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James.(CC) 38 When they came to the home of the synagogue leader,(CD) Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly. 39 He went in and said to them, “Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.”(CE) 40 But they laughed at him.

After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was. 41 He took her by the hand(CF) and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”).(CG) 42 Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished. 43 He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this,(CH) and told them to give her something to eat.

A Prophet Without Honor(CI)

6 Jesus left there and went to his hometown,(CJ) accompanied by his disciples. 2 When the Sabbath came,(CK) he began to teach in the synagogue,(CL) and many who heard him were amazed.(CM)

“Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? 3 Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph,[g] Judas and Simon?(CN) Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.(CO)

4 Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.”(CP) 5 He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on(CQ) a few sick people and heal them. 6 He was amazed at their lack of faith.

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve(CR)

Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village.(CS) 7 Calling the Twelve to him,(CT) he began to send them out two by two(CU) and gave them authority over impure spirits.(CV)

8 These were his instructions: “Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. 9 Wear sandals but not an extra shirt. 10 Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town. 11 And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet(CW) as a testimony against them.”

12 They went out and preached that people should repent.(CX) 13 They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil(CY) and healed them.

John the Baptist Beheaded(CZ)(DA)

14 King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying,[h] “John the Baptist(DB) has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”

15 Others said, “He is Elijah.”(DC)

And still others claimed, “He is a prophet,(DD) like one of the prophets of long ago.”(DE)

16 But when Herod heard this, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!”

17 For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison.(DF) He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, whom he had married. 18 For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”(DG) 19 So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to, 20 because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man.(DH) When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled[i]; yet he liked to listen to him.

21 Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet(DI) for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee.(DJ) 22 When the daughter of[j] Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests.

The king said to the girl, “Ask me for anything you want, and I’ll give it to you.” 23 And he promised her with an oath, “Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”(DK)

24 She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?”

“The head of John the Baptist,” she answered.

25 At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: “I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”

26 The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her. 27 So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison, 28 and brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother. 29 On hearing of this, John’s disciples came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(DL)(DM)

30 The apostles(DN) gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught.(DO) 31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat,(DP) he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”

32 So they went away by themselves in a boat(DQ) to a solitary place. 33 But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. 34 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd.(DR) So he began teaching them many things.

35 By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. “This is a remote place,” they said, “and it’s already very late. 36 Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.”

37 But he answered, “You give them something to eat.”(DS)

They said to him, “That would take more than half a year’s wages[k]! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?”

38 “How many loaves do you have?” he asked. “Go and see.”

When they found out, they said, “Five—and two fish.”(DT)

39 Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. 41 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves.(DU) Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. 42 They all ate and were satisfied, 43 and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. 44 The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand.

Jesus Walks on the Water(DV)(DW)

45 Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat(DX) and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida,(DY) while he dismissed the crowd. 46 After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray.(DZ)

47 Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land. 48 He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them, 49 but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost.(EA) They cried out, 50 because they all saw him and were terrified.

Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”(EB) 51 Then he climbed into the boat(EC) with them, and the wind died down.(ED) They were completely amazed, 52 for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.(EE)

53 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there.(EF) 54 As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus. 55 They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. 56 And wherever he went—into villages, towns or countryside—they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak,(EG) and all who touched it were healed.

That Which Defiles(EH)

7 The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus 2 and saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were defiled,(EI) that is, unwashed. 3 (The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders.(EJ) 4 When they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers and kettles.[l])(EK)

5 So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, “Why don’t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders(EL) instead of eating their food with defiled hands?”

6 He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written:

“‘These people honor me with their lips,
    but their hearts are far from me.
7 They worship me in vain;
    their teachings are merely human rules.’[m](EM)

8 You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.”(EN)

9 And he continued, “You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe[n] your own traditions!(EO) 10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and mother,’[o](EP) and, ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’[p](EQ) 11 But you say(ER) that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God)— 12 then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother. 13 Thus you nullify the word of God(ES) by your tradition(ET) that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.”

14 Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen to me, everyone, and understand this. 15 Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them.” [16] [q]

17 After he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him(EU) about this parable. 18 “Are you so dull?” he asked. “Don’t you see that nothing that enters a person from the outside can defile them? 19 For it doesn’t go into their heart but into their stomach, and then out of the body.” (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods(EV) clean.)(EW)

20 He went on: “What comes out of a person is what defiles them. 21 For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, 22 adultery, greed,(EX) malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. 23 All these evils come from inside and defile a person.”

Jesus Honors a Syrophoenician Woman’s Faith(EY)

24 Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre.[r](EZ) He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep his presence secret. 25 In fact, as soon as she heard about him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an impure spirit(FA) came and fell at his feet. 26 The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter.

27 “First let the children eat all they want,” he told her, “for it is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”

28 “Lord,” she replied, “even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”

29 Then he told her, “For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter.”

30 She went home and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.

Jesus Heals a Deaf and Mute Man(FB)

31 Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre(FC) and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee(FD) and into the region of the Decapolis.[s](FE) 32 There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk,(FF) and they begged Jesus to place his hand on(FG) him.

33 After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then he spit(FH) and touched the man’s tongue. 34 He looked up to heaven(FI) and with a deep sigh(FJ) said to him, “Ephphatha!” (which means “Be opened!”). 35 At this, the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly.(FK)

36 Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone.(FL) But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. 37 People were overwhelmed with amazement. “He has done everything well,” they said. “He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand(FM)(FN)(FO)

8 During those days another large crowd gathered. Since they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said, 2 “I have compassion for these people;(FP) they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. 3 If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, because some of them have come a long distance.”

4 His disciples answered, “But where in this remote place can anyone get enough bread to feed them?”

5 “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked.

“Seven,” they replied.

6 He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. When he had taken the seven loaves and given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people, and they did so. 7 They had a few small fish as well; he gave thanks for them also and told the disciples to distribute them.(FQ) 8 The people ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.(FR) 9 About four thousand were present. After he had sent them away, 10 he got into the boat with his disciples and went to the region of Dalmanutha.

11 The Pharisees came and began to question Jesus. To test him, they asked him for a sign from heaven.(FS) 12 He sighed deeply(FT) and said, “Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to it.” 13 Then he left them, got back into the boat and crossed to the other side.

The Yeast of the Pharisees and Herod

14 The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat. 15 “Be careful,” Jesus warned them. “Watch out for the yeast(FU) of the Pharisees(FV) and that of Herod.”(FW)

16 They discussed this with one another and said, “It is because we have no bread.”

17 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened?(FX) 18 Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember? 19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”

“Twelve,”(FY) they replied.

20 “And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”

They answered, “Seven.”(FZ)

21 He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”(GA)

Jesus Heals a Blind Man at Bethsaida

22 They came to Bethsaida,(GB) and some people brought a blind man(GC) and begged Jesus to touch him. 23 He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit(GD) on the man’s eyes and put his hands on(GE) him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?”

24 He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.”

25 Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. 26 Jesus sent him home, saying, “Don’t even go into[t] the village.”

Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah(GF)

27 Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?”

28 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist;(GG) others say Elijah;(GH) and still others, one of the prophets.”

29 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.”(GI)

30 Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.(GJ)

Jesus Predicts His Death(GK)

31 He then began to teach them that the Son of Man(GL) must suffer many things(GM) and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,(GN) and that he must be killed(GO) and after three days(GP) rise again.(GQ) 32 He spoke plainly(GR) about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.

33 But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!”(GS) he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

The Way of the Cross

34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.(GT) 35 For whoever wants to save their life[u] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.(GU) 36 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man(GV) will be ashamed of them(GW) when he comes(GX) in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”
