Jesus Is Questioned About Fasting(A)

18 (B)The disciples of John and of the Pharisees were fasting. Then they came and said to Him, “Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?”

19 And Jesus said to them, “Can the [a]friends of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast. 20 But the days will come when the bridegroom will be (C)taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days. 21 No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; or else the new piece pulls away from the old, and the tear is made worse. 22 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine bursts the wineskins, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But new wine must be put into new wineskins.”

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath(D)

23 (E)Now it happened that He went through the grainfields on the Sabbath; and as they went His disciples began (F)to pluck the heads of grain. 24 And the Pharisees said to Him, “Look, why do they do what is (G)not lawful on the Sabbath?”

25 But He said to them, “Have you never read (H)what David did when he was in need and hungry, he and those with him: 26 how he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the showbread, (I)which is not lawful to eat except for the priests, and also gave some to those who were with him?”

27 And He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the (J)Sabbath. 28 Therefore (K)the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.”

Healing on the Sabbath(L)

And (M)He entered the synagogue again, and a man was there who had a withered hand. So they (N)watched Him closely, whether He would (O)heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might [b]accuse Him. And He said to the man who had the withered hand, [c]“Step forward.” Then He said to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” But they kept silent. And when He had looked around at them with anger, being grieved by the (P)hardness of their hearts, He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he stretched it out, and his hand was restored [d]as whole as the other. (Q)Then the Pharisees went out and immediately plotted with (R)the Herodians against Him, how they might destroy Him.

A Great Multitude Follows Jesus(S)

But Jesus withdrew with His disciples to the sea. And a great multitude from Galilee followed Him, (T)and from Judea and Jerusalem and Idumea and beyond the Jordan; and those from Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, when they heard how (U)many things He was doing, came to Him. So He told His disciples that a small boat should be kept ready for Him because of the multitude, lest they should crush Him. 10 For He healed (V)many, so that as many as had afflictions pressed about Him to (W)touch Him. 11 (X)And the unclean spirits, whenever they saw Him, fell down before Him and cried out, saying, (Y)“You are the Son of God.” 12 But (Z)He sternly warned them that they should not make Him known.

Jesus Questioned About Fasting(A)

18 Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting.(B) Some people came and asked Jesus, “How is it that John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees are fasting, but yours are not?”

19 Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? They cannot, so long as they have him with them. 20 But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them,(C) and on that day they will fast.

21 “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. Otherwise, the new piece will pull away from the old, making the tear worse. 22 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins.”

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath(D)(E)

23 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain.(F) 24 The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”(G)

25 He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? 26 In the days of Abiathar the high priest,(H) he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat.(I) And he also gave some to his companions.”(J)

27 Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man,(K) not man for the Sabbath.(L) 28 So the Son of Man(M) is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

Jesus Heals on the Sabbath

Another time Jesus went into the synagogue,(N) and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely(O) to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath.(P) Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Stand up in front of everyone.”

Then Jesus asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” But they remained silent.

He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored. Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodians(Q) how they might kill Jesus.(R)

Crowds Follow Jesus(S)

Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the lake, and a large crowd from Galilee followed.(T) When they heard about all he was doing, many people came to him from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, and the regions across the Jordan and around Tyre and Sidon.(U) Because of the crowd he told his disciples to have a small boat ready for him, to keep the people from crowding him. 10 For he had healed many,(V) so that those with diseases were pushing forward to touch him.(W) 11 Whenever the impure spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.”(X) 12 But he gave them strict orders not to tell others about him.(Y)
